  • Way past time I went over this particular sword.
While I unfortunately don't have any good cutting footage, I do over the features of this sword, as well as the pros and cons. Hopefully this should still be a good video for you folks.
Here is the video where Scott Rodell goes over the making this sword:

So two small notes on the peened vs threaded/nut construction debate.
Tangs can rust. If you are, for example, in a moist climate and cutting water bottles and soaked tatami, moisture can get to the tang under the grip panels. You can't easily disassemble a peened sword to get at the tang for cleaning.
I had a sword that I'd used for a few years and never disassembled. When I did, I was surprised by the amount of rust. It wasn't even a cutting sword, but a blunt sparring sword.
Also, you can OVER-tighten a threaded/nut sword. Obsessively keeping it extremely tight puts a decent amount of pressure on the wooden grip, even with a washer, and can cause the wood to Crack and split. I also experienced this.

Loved the sword review. That after-card bit with the train going by mentally sent me back to my old apartment. Active train tracks about 100 feet from my front door/windows (mostly passing by between 9pm and 3am), and a local airfield across the street that hosted the main medical airlift company in the county and the county sheriff's helicopters, along with private aviation.
Thinking back, it's amazing how quickly I learned to mentally filter out the noise of trains and helos, but I couldn't imagine trying to record audio in that place. Best of luck, my friend.

Good review. I've been looking at possibly getting one of these and this review answered many questions I had.
Glad you talked about "the hanwei lottery", I've seen some real horror stories made by Cas Hanwei that were sent to me for repair. I mainly work on Japanese swords because that's mostly what's sent to me but in the past 3 years or so I've seen many hanwei that the blades are quite a bit thicker than the old ones making them more blade heavy, chunks of wood missing from handle cores, cracked handle cores, waves grinding of the blades, etc. The worse one I saw was a Cas Hanwei shobu zukuri raptor that had one of the mekugi (retaining pin) holes drilled half way off the tang and the inside of the hole was sharp so it was basically a rudimentary shear.
Hanwei SERIOUSLY needs to up their game in qc.

Other than the outside noise, pretty decent. There's a good amount of space for me and my son.

I've been wanting this sword for years. How does it compare to LK Chen or Sinoswords?

I'd be interested to hear your overall thoughts on pinball and how it relates to video games. Are you also familiar with other electromechanical games and their designs?

I had one of these swords, the only con I noticed is (my) user error, it's normal to have rattle but I kept tightening it thinking I knew what I was doing until I ruined it.
Otherwise it was flawless and behaved the way a real sword of this type traditionally would, I never broke the blade and I hit targets extremely hard, great buy just don't abuse it like I did.
    Cool video!
