  • Well, this one has been a long time coming. I've wanted to do this one for months, but never got around to it. But now, finally, I can get this started.
    I've noticed that no matter the system, there are certain universal movements and counters that different sword traditions share. So I wanted to explore some of them. We've all seen the overhead cut right? well, I 'm going to show a couple of counters for that move... and then I'm going to ask some other sword people to show how they would deal with it. I think this is going to end up being a fun project. At least, I hope so.
    I nominate Skallagrim to show me how he would deal with this move. I would ask some of the other sword RUclipsrs to do this as well... but... um... I don't know them. So I'll leave it up to him to contact them. :P

    I've been doing Bāguà for years and you can definitely see yours in your steps. My footwork is absolute garbage at the moment because I had a hip replacement six months ago and I am just now able to get back into it. I feel like I'm basically starting back at square one which, while it sucks starting over in my 40s I can also train along with my wife who didn't have much of any training before either. Your videos are very well done and I will be doing some light sword drills like this with my wife this weekend. Thanks for all you do and keep it up!

    Great video! As a dao guy much if the stuff is very similar but some of goals are different. My ideal technique would be to grab the opponents sword arm and the make my own powerful cut

    You are right, there is a saying called 不招不架就是一下. Straight swords aren't meant to be used like broadsword where there are more slashing and metal to metal contact. You are right with regards to covering yourself, which works similar to wing chun principles and the idea of occupying a space. There is also an idea of 带 or guiding the sword away that you didnt mention, but i'll add it here as a point to think about.

    I adore this channel. It always feels personal, intimate, and organic. I am wondering if you have favorite videos you have made regarding your philosophical perceptions or combat analysis? I would very much like to make a personal playlist of such things to listen to while relaxing.

      Hmm... I never really thought about what my favorites are, but I guess I could think of some and make a list later.
      Speaking of my more philosophical perceptions, I have a video coming up that definitely fits that description, but I get the feeling people are going to hate me for it. We'll see...

    Yea. I'm always curious if this sort of stuff is parallel evolution, or cross pollination from ancient times. A lot of it shows up in European sources, with some variation maybe, but close.

    The counter depend of the fighting position if we look your first counter by example it would suit bether in a higher guard position if you hold the guard at hart level it would be bether to simply tilt it a bit to counter the other / in bushido or in medieval reenactment the bether way to counter is by minimizing the action to get your next strike quicker making it harder for opponent to counter.✌️ training and knowledge is the key good practice to you 🙏

    Those are all solid and classic counters to the diagonal forehand strike. If you need more people to train with let me know. My training buddies and I are in Seattle. Family friendly, your son can come too.

    The first one most definitely parallels with other martial arts as it is very basic. In kenjutsu you’d use two hands on your katana but it’s seems like your son also uses two hands for his jian while you only use one hand.

    Hey swordsage, when you're doing the check into counterattack are you simply touching your blade to the opponent's as a safeguard before entering the cut, or making strong contact to use the rebound for a faster cut while also moving your opponent's weapon further away from any potential defenses to your counter? Looking forward to seeing more of this series!

    • @Swordsage
      @Swordsage  Год назад +1

      It's kind of a mix of both.
      Basically, when I go into that guard and pivoting, I'm basically trying to make my opponents blade slide of of mine as I rotate my sword to counter attack. You will also notice that my footwork helps me to step out of the line of attack as well. However, I also use the pivot to give my guard just enough force to nudge the opponents blade slightly aside to in order to increase my defense. I'm not trying to put too much force into it though: this is not a hard block or a forceful parry.

    where did you get those jians from?

    • @Swordsage
      @Swordsage  Год назад +2

      These were prototype practice jian that were made by LK Chen a while back, but the company quickly decided not to mass produce these, as they are very hard and stuff, so they aren't exactly the safest ones to use unless you have padding, and even then, there's a risk. They decided to go with nylon blades instead. Personally I happen to like these, since the blades don't flop around, but I can understand reason why they didn't go with this material.

      @@MRtacoslicous I'm sorry, but I don't make music commercially, so I don't really have a place where you can check out the few tunes I made. I mostly just do it as a hobby, anyway.
