Farmer's Call for Help ▪︎ Saving the Lambs

  • With lambing season just around the corner I received a call from some farmers requesting help reducing the fox numbers.
After an impressive result on a property in that area a few weeks earlier, 4 of the neighbouring farmers wanted to engage my services to cull foxes and an ever growing rabbit population prior to lambs hitting the ground.
Word of mouth and reputation is everything, especially in rural communities.
Doing the right thing, being professional and getting results generally leads to more work and for you recreational hunters, more access.
After packing and saying my goodbye's to the wife and kids I headed off for another 3 nights of fox control.
First night was spent on a property I had been to before and yeilded a dozen foxes and handful of hares. After a bit of sleep that morning it was over to meet the new clients and familiarise myself with their properties before the sun went down.
The following 2 nights adding another 38 foxes and 50 odd rabbits to the tally.
All in all it was a very successful trip with 5 very happy farmers and a safer environment for lambing season.
The gear I'm running this trip is a Sako 85 Hunter chambered in. 223 with the Pulsar Thermion2 Pro XP50 LRF and 55gr Adi world class ammo.
My air rifle is an FX Impact M3 600mm barrel in .22cal topped with the Infiray RS75 thermal scope which was on loan to me for a couple of weeks shooting Cometa 18.13gr pellets @ 890fps.

Gee, as a kid in the Riverina I can remember dad and his mates going out to farms for a week shooting foxes and rabbits. It was the mid/late 50's and there were two utes, an Austin A40 and a Ford. The A40 was piled high with foxes, under a canvas tarp, the Ford had so many rabbits, that they had to bag them so as not to leave dead rabbits all over the Sturt Highway. The local Tannery took the hides and the blokes shared the meat out with all the neighbours. Not sure what happened to the foxes but they got money for every one from some government organisation. Not sure how many trips they went on but it all stopped early in the 60's. Your fox hunts brought back memories of dad and his mates calling to foxes to stop and I'd laugh every time, then cop a clout around the ears to shut up.

The huge 'leaping' convulsions on headshot rabbit and hares is spinal shock. I've had it happen a few times to me. They've been thrashing around so much I've run over to finish then off thinking I've only winged them, but they've been entirely decapaitated by the 17hmr round. It causes a flood of electrical impulses. Really freaked me out the first few times! .

First of all I’m impressed with your commitment to the work!
I grew up on a cattle operation and farm in the Rocky Mountains and I hunted every species of birds, small game, varmints, and big game.
But I was born with a weak stomach and didn’t handle the messy job very well after the game was down. I did it but I hated it.
Then I had an NDE and following that experience I couldn’t hunt anymore. My favorite pastime was over.
I continued target shooting and raised my boys shooting every type of rifle and handgun. But I couldn’t hunt at all. I miss those experiences and I wish you the very best.
Feral animals are a huge problem in many places. You do yourself proud with your professionalism in every respect. Well done!!!

That's exactly what it's all about mate. Even though they're pests, all culling should be done as humanely and efficiently as possible. 👊

Another good night's work Rod. A good tally of foxes taken out of the enviroment.
I'm disappointed I didn't get down to Lardners Park to hello to you. Hopefully you'll be back again soon.

I edited 26 shots together on my mobile phone... manually transfering files...cos pulsar can't group copy n paste files...that's without comments and talking clips....just footage ..
      I like my xm50....
