  • Q & A: Many people have asked me what I use as a base material for the hard cap wigs.
PROTECTION: I use heat resistant cling wrap tape that is meant for packaging crates. Microwave safe kitchen wrap will be fine too. Just test if it melts from contact with the glue gun nozzle first.
WARNING: Do not use this technique on painted dolls. It might harm the faceup! Make wigs first and paint the doll later. Or use separate wig heads like I always do.
CAP MATERIAL: I use soft 4-way stretch netting (common in dance and ice skating costumes). It comes in various skin tones so it's easy to find the right colour to match the doll's resin. I place it on the bias on top of a heat resistant cling wrap and tie on tightly with a yarn matching the colour. Stockings do not work with the hot glue!
GLUE: I use transparent colourless hot glue sticks with a low melting point. Pick sticks that feel sticky, soft and elastic when hard. This type of glue has more friction and holds the individual hairs better. Wigs made with this technique are brushable and washable in cool water.
WARNING: Do not use boiling water bath curling technique on these wigs as the glue might melt. Instead you can use a clean hot glue gun nozzle as a mini curling iron. The caps made with technique are semi hard. They retain form but are thin and elastic enough to firm a natural hairline even on dolls that have human skull shaped heads (rather than egg shaped heads). Stiff material hard caps are often brittle and need to have round hairlines. With this technique you can make perfectly fitting hairlines with details such as sideburns or widow's peak without the risk of them breaking.
Hope this helps answer the questions about the materials used for the cap. Feel free to ask my other questions about wig or doll making. I'll try to answer popular questions when I'm working on the next related project.

Lol it’s been a minute since I did a doll makeover so I’m surprised I get doll-related content on my timeline
But I will definitely be saving this one for future projects, looks doable! Thanx
