Jerry Quarry was an in-your-face fighter who would take two or three hard shots to the head in order to land one. His story's a lot of things. Not least, a cautionary tale...and not just for boxers, but football players and pro wrestlers (yes, for real), too.

@@TheWolvesCurse it's not like other contact sports. In sports like rugby, there's danger, but the objective isn't to harm the opponent. In boxing - and I accept that most boxers are decent people who don't want to cause permanent harm - the objective is to cause a significant brain injury.
@@joshuatree5620 the objective is to score a knockout. To concuss the opponent. I accept that most boxers don't want to cause lasting damage to an opponent, but a concussion is a serious head injury, and that is the objective in boxing.
@TightSqueezes how so? 4oz gloves in mma, also elbows, knees, and kicks to the head hit harder. also don' t forget thr beginings of mma like vale tudo. where they had no gloves, no weight classes and very limited rules
Mma is nowhere near as dangerous, it's more violent but in boxing you take constant punches to the head, a lot of the time in mma they are leg kicked, double legged, lot of the fights are on the ground..
@@emachine556 it's not getting hit harder. It's just the huge focus on hitting the head repeatedly. While MMA you can do damage in all types of way not just punches to the head. Plus more rounds; and allowing fighters to get back up after a knockdown (where they will take more damage because they are allowed a second chance, where as in MMA you get knocked down, you get submitted or ground and pounded then finished).
4 oz gloves being worse is a misconception, heavier gloves actually allow you to punch and take more punches without broken bones/bleeding. Sure, head kicks can be more damaging in one go, but they are rare and the main issue is frequency of head trauma. That being said, MMA fighters definitely need to be careful. Train smart, and don’t retire too late.
Better to live life and be the champion he was than allow all his passion and energy manifest into something else... life can be cruel but you shouldn’t pity this man as he has achieved way more than most..

I’m an aspiring boxer looking to compete on an amateur level very soon and I just wanted to ask you if even after going through your career of boxing, do you regret it now that you have to face the consequences? Because I feel like there is nothing in this world I want to do besides box.
No regrets. Like you it was all I wanted to do. All I want isyoung people to know is there are consequences. When we are young we think nothing bad can happen or were invincible. If it’s your passion and what you want to do go for it!!! Just try to be mindful of your body and what it tell you. I wish you the best of luck in your career and maybe one day I’ll see you on PPV!
@@DaunteeTheInferno Regret is looking back at something you didn't do and having to live with the thought of not knowing what would have happened. That being said if that's what you want to do. Do it!
In that 6 years you were doing things in a "tough" way? I mean like a lot of hard sparring, a lot of amateur fights and really heavy blows/ko taken
Thank you for your response
Wow thats some hard truth you're sharing. Salute
Jerry Quarry was a tough, tough guy.
Jerry's brother is the epitome of I am my brother's keeper.
The most exciting heavyweight boxer i ever seen. Never a dull fight. When he had his man hurt he did not let up
A percentage of ticket sales should go to a basic pension for fighters
no! it start with a good intention and then it get abused and scammed... look what happenned with pension for hockey player in the 70's (scammed away).
John Smith That two million dollars should had gone to a pension fund.
John Smith what a great idea.
Or they can save their winnings...
@@TinkerTailorSoldier1 some of them got ripped off big time never seen any real money
his brother is very good and inspiring. he has some unique voice too he would make a good rock singer
I can't remember Quarry when he was fighting as I was slightly too young. I've come across him in recent times. What a fantastic, skilfull boxer! Today he would probably be a cruiser weight and a world champion. May he rest in peace.
I cracked when I saw him need assistance signing the glove. That was tough to see
My heart
This man deserves our admiration for he lost his life for our entertainment.
His brother is a good man to take care of him like that.
2020 and people are shocked that being hit in the head seriously is not good for a person
really, next they will work out going into combat is bad psychologically on a person
Lay off the coke bro
what a fantastic brother to have
Rest in peace, Mr. Quarry. I was a big Ali fan so I didn’t realize what a good boxer you were at that time. Several years later after doing more research watching old bouts, I saw what a talented boxer you were with tremendous heart.
Even after sparring sessions I would drive home with headaches, I can only imagine how this guy feels.
Take care man it's not worth it unless you're paid millions
What a wonderful brother.
His brother looking after him is a World Champion.People talk about guts and manhood, thats as tough as it gets.
Jerry had fans everywhere. We still love him too.
I left boxing at age 28 (I'm 36 now) for suspected neurological reasons (dysphemia) and after a year long stint with alcohol went back to school and got a good job in IT. My condition hasn't gotten any worse, but no better either. I was told because I was relatively young it might improve, and I have learned some tricks to hide it, so I'm hoping for the best. I still workout like I was fighting, but no sparring. I have such mixed feelings about this sport. All the best to Jerry.
I currently practice boxing but I don’t spar or enter the ring. I love this sport, breaks my heart that it breaks you mentally.
Does it affect your intelligence in anyway?
@@polishherowitoldpilecki5521 no I feel I think the same way, its only speaking for more than a few sentences where I notice it. I've learned to cover it up somewhat over the years but its still there. Yes I know what you mean, I feel the same way.
The Love that James showed his Brother was truly heartwarming, Bless them Both.
Jerry Quarry was an in-your-face fighter who would take two or three hard shots to the head in order to land one. His story's a lot of things. Not least, a cautionary tale...and not just for boxers, but football players and pro wrestlers (yes, for real), too.
his brother is a great human being and a prime example of how family should be.
@@michaelakomolafe8407 just like football, or any other full contact sport for that matter. some people have their hearts in those kinds of sport though, and you can hardly get in the way of someone who's determined like that.
@@TheWolvesCurse it's not like other contact sports. In sports like rugby, there's danger, but the objective isn't to harm the opponent. In boxing - and I accept that most boxers are decent people who don't want to cause permanent harm - the objective is to cause a significant brain injury.
@@DHTCF the objective is to be the last one standing,it aint about wanting to hurt anybody.its about not wanting to get hurt.
@@joshuatree5620 the objective is to score a knockout. To concuss the opponent. I accept that most boxers don't want to cause lasting damage to an opponent, but a concussion is a serious head injury, and that is the objective in boxing.
no, hes a burden for his family.
This breaks my heart...at least he's in the history books as one of the Greatest...R.I.P. mr Quarry...
In Boxing the glove only protects the hand, not the brain.. Sad
mostly protects the hand, but also is harder to knock someone out, so they get hit even more, accumulating more damage
Anthony Macias the mouthpiece protects the brain slightly
Well it depends. When the gloves were thinner there were a lot more of deaths in boxing.
They mostly just protect from cuts, only thing protecting the brain is the mouthguard
@@Swag0nmydick I'm not sure if you're trolling or not, but the mouth guard protects the mouth, that's it, not your brain, I know it's crazy.
His brother Mike died suffering the same fate. He was once prophetically quoted... "Life is lived forwards, learned backwards."
Yes - ruclips.net/video/M9s4DvKNTsU/видео.html&ab_channel=WorldBoxingHallofFame%3ABoxerJerryQuarry
A terrible tragedy - his brother, Mike, died of the same condition too, at the age of 55. RIP, both of you.
@Trollking2988 Both of them used to box. It's not genetic.
Trollking2988 what?
@@lefez9015 Yeah, in fact of the four Quarry brothers, only James (the brother who cares for Jerry) who didn't box professionally
RIP Jerry, gave more than received.
It's befiting that he doesn't remembers his fights anymore, but he still had his moves. Couldn't tie his shoes, but could still punch.
God bless Jerrys brother who took care of him. Such a wonderful spirit.
This is so tragic. I can't help wonder how many MMA fighters will end up like this.
Tony Ferguson is already showing signs of brain damage as is Mark Hunt we will see many more. That’s why I like wrestling and BJJ more
@TightSqueezes how so?
Love Jerry! Great fighter! His awesome heart to never quit ended up injuring him.
everyone should have a brother like James what a hero. his brother cares and still does.
Better to live life and be the champion he was than allow all his passion and energy manifest into something else... life can be cruel but you shouldn’t pity this man as he has achieved way more than most..
Really tho? I can go to the next 100 people and nobody will know him. Not worth it if you're half a veggie
Shadow has a point. Everyone has heard of Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali. But I've never heard of Jerry Quarry. Not taking away his skill, but that's how things are.
@@anonymousotter6455 he fought at the top in his day. U don't have to be the absolute best
His brother is such a good man
Jerry was definately a contender in the Heaveyweight division during 60s & 70s. Thank for sharing this. Didnt know he was in that kind of condition.
He had charisma, understated, likeable, even in this video, he had heart bigger than his talent, bravo Jerry!
You think this is sad but scream for knockouts and say fighters that are strategic & defensive “run”.
Boxing is a guilty pleasure. It's my favorite sport, but the tragedy of it isn't lost on me. And yeah, almost all fans want to see "a good fight" AKA a war. Just being honest and won't lie ... very guilty pleasure like I said, and been a fan my whole life.
I don't necessarily want to see a war,it's about competition with me.I want to see the best fight the best to see who's the best.
They're two extremes on opposing ends of the spectrum and they both suck lol
@@paulanthony5274 yeah but the blood is extra sauce or garnish. Or really it's like desert. All the extra unnecessary sugar/carbs after the essential parts of the meal, or fight here

James you are a very caring person i wish that I would of had a brother like you. My brother's aren't compassionate they put me through so much hell.
Quarry was a warrior, he didn't deserve this fate
Great fighter. And Great Brother
His brother reminds me of the Boys Town saying to Father Flannigan when the kid was carrying another kid, “He ain’t heavy Father, he’s my brother!” A wonderful brother for sure!
He was a real warrior. So sad to see him like this now.
Such a dilemma for boxing and football fans. I love both sports, but it's incredibly sad for the participants. When I was younger I thought you just shook it off when your bell was rung, not that the damage was cumulative and so destructive.
@jeff afe What is it then, jeff?
Jeff ale, I agree....If your score is determined by judges, that's not a sport in my eyes, it's a competition.
True. I recently began boxing and I will never fight in competitions for this reason. Even sparring lightly I can fill it making an impact. Like I will have a headache the next day or two
I plan to limit my sparring to once a week though even that may not he enough..
@@nathanbruce1992 your just not used to it yet. But I understand. I remember having those hard sparring sessions.
Football players were idiots before they ever played. Their fans are worse.
His brother MIKE Quarry was a pretty good light-heavy weight boxer as well. He died young, 55, related to CTE as well.
‘What is it about violence we can watch a game of skill’ ... Boxing is all about skill
Mr Highkick more like skillful violence
José Roberto Cardoso Fonseca Neto and that’s why we watch it
imagine on the future we will be seeing scores of MMA fighters like this and worse.
What a great brother. Same with Gerald McLennan and his sisters looking after him. Sad price to pay.
A lot of people forget about him.....Mike Tyson said he was the scariest boxer he saw besides himself... He said he hit's with bad intentions... So true
And Pritchard colon
this is god damn heartbreaking. I no longer think boxers are over-paid, Mayweather is a damn genius for playing defensive.
