Rocky was always so nice and humble. He never trash talked his opponents and always praised their fighting abilities before he broke them , he let his fist do the talking.

William Dettloff’s biography *'Ezzard Charles: A Boxing Life'* documents that Charles first felt weakness and some numbness in his limbs as early as 1951. This was 3 years before the Marciano fights and it was also the same year he lost his title. Ezzard, his family, Ezzard's trainer's Ray Arcel, Jimmy Brown, Chickie Ferrera and Bill Gore all said they noticed signs of ALS in 1951. Bert Sugar said, *"His trainer, Ray Arcel said, that even now, at this stage in 51, and then on into the middle 50's, you could see the beginning, the traces of the disease, that would later claim his life, Lou Gehrig's disease in Charles."* --@ 35:01 ESPN Ringside - Rocky Marciano

*"Charles lost the title to Walcott in 1951. Ailing Charles tried to regain the Heavyweight title three times, losing once to Walcott in 1952 and twice to Marciano in 1954. Charles a spent force by that time, who, from 1951 on was suffering from the symptoms of ALS."* -- written by William Dettloff author of "Ezzard Charles: A Boxing Life" 2015

The diagnosis came from Ezzard's family, all his trainers and Ezzard himself. They didn't need a doctor's diagnosis inorder to help them see Ezzard's hand trembling when he tried to hold a spoon while eating soup. Ezzard said, *"after a guy hit me, I didn't seem to be able to get away,"* he recalled, *"I didn't have the same coordination."* William Dettloff's biography about Ezzard Charles having ALS symptoms in 1951 is *NEVER* going to magically disappear just because you want it to or because there wasn't a medical diagnosis done in 1951. Wikipedia needs to be updated by Ezzard's family the same way Archie Moore's birthdate was recently updated from 1916 to 1913 by his family making Archie 41 when he fought Rocky.

*"The Heavyweight version of Charles,”* Dettloff sums up, *“would get a lot of good work done. But on the best day of his life, he was no more a Heavyweight than Ray Robinson. He never would be as good there as he was at light heavy and below.”* -- written by William Dettloff author of "Ezzard Charles: A Boxing Life" 2015
*"Ezzard was intentionally ducked by champions in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. As a result, Charles was forced into the 175 lb Heavyweight division despite never being a true Heavyweight."* -- written by William Dettloff author of "Ezzard Charles: A Boxing Life" 2015

Marciano boarded a small Cessna 172 with pilot Glenn Belz, and Frank Farrell, the son of Louis Thomas Fratto, born Luigi Tommaso Giuseppe Fratto, also known as "Lew Farrell" and "Cock-eyed", an American labor racketeer and organized crime figure in Chicago, Illinois, and Des Moines, Iowa, from the 1930s to his death in 1967. A massive storm system challenged Belz's relative inexperience (231 hours of total flight time) as the plane flew west from Chicago over Iowa. Trying to land at a small airfield outside Newton, Belz crashed the plane into a tree about two miles short of the intended runway. On August 31, 1969, all aboard, including Marciano, died on impact. It was all Rocky's fault, he pressured the amateur pilot into flying even though he knew they were headed towards severe thunderstorms. Why? What was so important in Des Moines? His business was loansharking and he was in a hurry to collect 35K which is equivalent to 293K today. He was in a hurry because he didn't want to be late to his birthday (Sept. 1st) party the next day in Florida.

At six-foot, one-inch, he had an eighty-four inch reach-longer than that of all other champions with the exception of Primo Carnera. His neck was a massive eighteen inches. But the number that leaps off the page-the statistic that looks initially lik' a typo-is that which corresponds to his hands. When closed into a fist, they measured fifteen inches around, virtually twice the size of an average man’s. To contemplate the impact of a fist that large, delivered over a distance that great, from a man so determined to do damage, would give even the bravest opponent pause."

Why would a "bigger" fist do more damage on impact? All things being equal, a smaller surface would be more devastating!? Probably "old-school" fighters had "conditioned" hands (like the shins of Muay Thai fighters in Thailand maybe?) because they used to punch with gloves with basically no padding and so on....but I'm not even 100% sure of this "theory"! On a side note, the strength/power/resistence etc of boxers of bygone eras tend to be always exaggerated and all the related "stories" are embellished! Don't get me wrong, I love the boxing "lore" but I can't believe even half of that! Ali fought both Foreman and Liston, and he said that when it came to George he just had to take the hits and wear big George down, in the case of Liston, he simply did not want to get hit at all. So for Ali it was certainly Sonny that hit harder. Foreman trained with Liston after the Olympics, preparing him for pro boxing. George said Sonny was the only man that had ever pushed him backwards with sheer strength alone. He also said that you were always really careful not to make Sonny mad! I think it is pretty safe to say that Sonny Liston hit harder than George Foreman.

Rocky Marciano's legacy is not that he was just undefeated, but how he was undefeated. He overcame cuts, knockdowns, trailing late in fights, and more. His will is unquestioned. When you look at the greatest heavyweights to ever reign over the most prestigious title in all of sports, the greats are near-mythical figures that would give everything to win, men that had an indomitable spirit to go along with skill. When you think of guys like that, you think of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, Holyfield and yes, Rocky Marciano, who undoubtedly etched his name among them. So let the revisionist run their mouths about how he was too short, how he was just a brawler, how his competition was weak etc. In the end, no other heavyweight champion has ever retired undefeated and I doubt anyone else ever will.
The one-man that did it is always standing and his name is Rocky Marciano!

Yes you are correct. However his hardest fights were against very old blown up light heavyweight fighters, Walcott, Charles ( who was in the early stages of MS) and Moore. The combined winning percentage of Marciano's opponents was 27 percent the lowest of any HW champ. Had he come around in the 60s,70s,80s or 90s he would have won a few fights at heavyweight but he would have noway been dominant. Now if he could have gotten down to 175 or been a cruiserweight, I'm fairly certain Rocky would have been a top 5 all time. The problem is ( I'm quoting Larry Merchant) " the big men are bigger and there a way more of them". I just see no way he could get past Liston,Ali,Norton, Holmes, Frazier, Lennox, either Klitchko brother, Lewis, Mercer, Ruddock. He may have given Evander or Tyson a tough 2 or 3 rounds but he would have been steamrolled inside of 5 . Also he would never have beaten Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson or Louis. A prime Dempsey was barely a step above a caveman. A prime Louis gives any heavyweight a hard way to go and Johnson could beat guys with his jab.

George said in an interview with Ring Magazine: “Sparring with Liston is the most dangerous thing that I ever did in my entire life. No matter what I tried against him, it was me who had to revert back to boxing. Nobody made me box like Sonny Liston did and that happened every time we worked together. He taught me many things, including the importance of the jab.” A good example of Sonny's sheer strength was an exercise he devised in training camp of loading an industrial sized wheelbarrow full of rocks, and wheeling it up and down a hill. Foreman, 19, and training with "the old man," could only carry one wheelbarrow for every 3 for Sonny: “His strength," said Foreman, "you just can't believe how strong he was!"

*"I decided a Champion had to face everyone, even if he loses."* - Floyd Patterson (SOMETHING ROCKY MARCIANO NEVER DID)
*Why did Rocky "UP-N-QUIT" during his prime after only (7) years while everyone else was fighting (15) to (25) years? Patterson fought from 1952 to 1972. Imagine Rocky having a normal 20 year career from 1948 to 1968? He would of had to face Cleveland Williams, Ingemar Johansson, Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Ernie Terrell, Joe Frazier, George Chuvalo, Jerry Quarry, Eddie Machen, Zora Folley, Oscar Bonavena, Jimmy Ellis and Doug Jones just to name a few.*
For Pete's sake Marciano was only 31 his last fight and to make matters even worse his last fight had to be against a 41 year old light heavyweight named Archie Moore born "1913" wikipedia!
*Little Marciano ducked Marty Marshall, Harold Johnson, Joey Maxim, Yolande Pompey, Jimmy Bivins, Bob Satterfield, Nino Valdez, Lloyd Marshall, Oakland Billy Smith, Clarence Henry, Curtis "Hatchetman" Sheppard, Willie Pastrano, Tommy Jackson, Dan Bucceroni, Bob Baker, Cleveland Williams and Ingemar Johansson just to name a few. How do you figure that Marciano only fought 7 years? Every piece of evidence I find says he fought 8. He began his career in 1947, fought every year, and retired in 1955. 1955-1947= 8 years. If I'm wrong, please educate me on the issue.
Now onto those guys you mention he eventually knew he would have to confront. I don't see that at all. None of them had accomplished anything of note in the HW division by the time Rocky retired. He would have no reason to know any of them.
I also find it strange that you mentioned the names Chuvalo and Miteff. Lets take a closer look at the career of those guys. .
Chuvalo made his pro debut on April 24, 1956. Alex Miteff made his debut 2 months later in June of 56, Why would Rocky know anything about these guys who hadn't even fought professionally at the time of his last fight?

*Quotes from Jersey Joe Walcott about Cassius Clay:*
*“Cassius Clay is the best heavyweight champion of them all. He could beat Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Rocky Marciano and a fellow named Jersey Joe Walcott.”*
Walcott was asked if he realized what he was saying. He nodded and repeated:
*“Clay could beat Dempsey, Louis, Charles, Marciano and a fellow named Jersey Joe Walcott. Clay is too big and punches too fast and moves too quickly for all of us old timers. This kid has speed in his hands and feet like a welterweight.”*
Asked to explain in more detail why he rates Clay a sure winner over Dempsey, Louis, Charles, Marciano and himself, Jersey Joe lit up a cigarette and said:
*“Dempsey and Louis and the rest of us would be too small to beat this big, rangy kid. All of us old-timers needed room to punch. But not Clay. He can hit you from any position and hurt you. He can do this even when he is off balance.”*
*“I fought Louis, Charles and Marciano. I know none of these men, or me, could box with Clay. And I know none of us could punch as fast as Cassius. When one punch can take a big man like Liston off his feet, people should realize the agility, coordination and power Clay can put into each and every punch.”*
*RING, SEPT. 1965 WALCOTT INSIST ALI WOULD BEAT DEMPSEY, LOUIS, ROCKY, ETC. BY ED BRENNAN*

Don Turner said, *"Rocky Marciano was the hardest puncher i ever seen."* Oh really, when was Don ever hit by Rocky? Ali said Shavers was the hardest puncher. Foreman said Lyle was the hardest puncher. Archie Moore rated Sheppard and Durelle as the hardest punchers. Emanuel Steward rated Wladimir and Lennox as the hardest punchers. Miller fans, Bakole fans, Zhang fans, Joshua fans, Ali fans, Foreman fans and Holmes fans NEVER EVER discuss Don Turner, only Rocky fans discuss Don's opinionated speculations and believe it as the gospel truth. Hey everyone, Delusional Don said little Rocky was the hardest puncher so it Must Be True Ha Ha Ha!
Besides Don never saw Rocky fight in person! Rocky had his last fight in New York 1955. Don was born in 1939 and raised in Cincinnati. Don was only 15 years old. He had no money and was over 600 miles away. *His opinions are based on hearsay and film, in other words the same as ours!* Don said, "I have no idea what my father did. We were on welfare and lived in the Cincinnati projects four blocks from Ezzard Charles." -- A Beautiful Sickness: Reflections on the Sweet Science, by Thomas Hauser, 2001- page's 72 & 74.
*If Don thought so highly of little 5' 9" 184 lb Rocky with tiny 67" flyweight reach why didn't he look for another power-punching midget to rule the Heavies? Instead he chose to train 6' 7" 250 lb Michael Grant who had an incredible 86" reach!*

Puncher of The Century Earnie Shavers is known for being the hardest puncher in Heavyweight boxing history. He scored 69 knockout wins, including 23 in the first round.
So powerful, both Joe Frazier and George Foreman told boxing writer Jerry Eisenberg they would never fight Shavers. Real fighters knew enough to avoid him. His incredible one punch power made him more than dangerous. George Foreman told him personally when Earnie lobbied for a fight, "hell no." Joe Frazier told Shavers bluntly when Shavers asked him for a shot, "No way, Earnie.”
Hall of Fame and all time greats Ali and Holmes both said Shavers power, especially his one punch power, was simply unrivaled. But they, and others, also said a lot more..
Angelo Dundee, the great trainer, said "Earnie wasn't really a good boxer, but God, his power was amazing."
Muhammad Ali said after his match with Shavers, "Earnie hit me so hard, he shook my kinfolk back in Africa"
And when fighters had to meet him, they left in awe. Tex Cobb said "Earnie could punch you in the neck with his right hand and break your ankle." He also said, "if a man hit any harder than Earnie I'd shoot him."
Ron Lyle: "Hey man, that's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life. And George Foreman could punch, but none of them could hit like Earnie Shavers did. When he hit you, the lights went out. I can laugh about it now, but at the time it wasn't funny."
Larry Holmes, comparing Shavers to Tyson, said "Earnie hit me harder than any other fighter, including Mike Tyson. He hit me and I was face down on the canvas hearing saxophonist Jimmy Tillis."
Jimmy Young, who was knocked cold by Shavers in his first fight, but survived the second, said "I was not gonna get tagged by him again, no sir!"
Nor were fighters and trainers the only ones who saw and marveled at Shavers sheer overwhelming power. Hall of Fame sports journalist Jerry Izenberg said of Shavers, "rarely did Earnie hit anyone below the neck; he was a headhunter and a good one. For me, Shavers was the greatest one-punch hitter I have ever seen."
"However, while Shavers struck serious fear into his opponents, such freakishly big hitting power had its drawbacks for the man himself," said Kenny Rainford.
“Being such a big puncher actually hurt my career,” says Shavers. “I relied on my power too much. I wish I’d had trainers that could have taught me more about combination punches."
“I used to gas out in five or six rounds because I put that much effort into my punches and it was impossible to punch for an entire fight without tiring out."
In the years that followed, Rainford met Ali and asked him about the famous fight with Shavers.
“I can not remember the last round of our fight,” Ali admitted. “He hit me so hard that for fourteenth round, I was on autopilot. I can’t remember a thing. When I’ve watched the fight back, and see the way I rallied in the fifteenth round, I was doing that off memory.”
Shavers reigned down on Ali with 266 punches that night. Afterwards, Rainford claims, the New York commission stated Ali would never fight in New York again after doctors discovered tears on his brain.
Eig's study, conducted by Arizona State speech scientists Visar Berisha and Julie Liss found that Ali's speech slowed by 16 percent after a 15-round bout with Ernie Shavers in 1977. Shavers, a brawler, landed 266 punches throughout the fight. If one fight had to be picked, Ernie Shavers inflicted the most damage.
Shavers is directly responsibly for the early retirements of Ron Asher, Frank Smith, Bunky Akins, Bill McMurray, Harold Carter, Eddie Parotte and Larry Sims, all of whom he knocked out and never fought again.

Wladimir Klitschko was more active than any recent Heavyweight champion, and he fought in a record 29 Heavyweight championship matches. He defended his title against all comers in four countries on three continents. He made 5 successful title defenses in his first reign as champion and an astonishing 18 in his second reign, which covered 12 years.
Unfortunately haters must hate and Wlad is known more for 3 losses -- Puritty in 98,, Sanders in 03,, Brewster in 04 -- than for any of his wins. BUT he re-established himself after the loss to Brewster and reeled off 22 consecutive victories before ending his career with back to back losses to Fury and Joshua, dealing him his first losses in 11 years at the age of 40.
He retired with a 64-5 record, a 25-4 mark in Heavyweight title fights and 53 knockouts. He never ducked anyone, but was never fully appreciated. He was a brilliant athlete, a magnificently proportioned and conditioned giant of a man. He weighed 245 pounds, stood 6 feet 6 inches with an 81 inch reach and a jab that may have been exceeded in Heavyweight history only by Holmes and Liston. He moved like a man much smaller, light on his feet and thanks to the tutelage of the late great Emanuel Steward, cut off the ring expertly.
For all his greatness in the ring, though, what made Wlad special was his presence outside of it. He was a man of arts and letters, owner of a doctorate in sports science, a charitable man who tirelessly raised money for children and who fought for human rights around the world. In 2014, he famously stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his brother, leading anti-government protests in the Ukraine. He made the world a better place for many with his efforts, standing as a symbol of courage and defiance in the face of overwhelming political power. Today the Klitschko brothers proudly defend their country against Russia.

Wladimir Klitschko dominated Brewster through the course of the first four rounds, sending him to the canvas in the fourth; however, things turned around unusually fast in the fifth when Klitschko began tiring and Brewster's punches began backing him up. Not defending himself and leaning into ropes for support, Klitschko took a standing eight count. On unsteady legs, Klitschko fell to the canvas after the bell and the referee stopped the fight for his safety. When talking about the fight, Emmanuel Steward said: "Wladimir was in incredible shape. I've never seen anything like this in my career. I know what it looks like when a boxer is getting hurt from punches. There was definitely something else that caused problems for Wladimir".
Shortly after the fight Klitschko was rushed into hospital. An examination showed Klitschko's blood sugar level almost two times higher than the permissible norm. According to members of Klitschko's team, the doctor told them that Klitschko had been "inches away" from falling into a diabetic coma, and that with blood sugar level that high, Klitschko would've been incapable of handling a single proper training session. After returning from the examination to the hotel, he fell ill with nausea, followed by physical weakness. On 12 April, he arrived in Las Vegas and donated blood and urine samples for an independent examination, which was supposed to be done by Donald Katlin, who specialized in such cases. The examination showed no signs of anabolic steroids in his blood, but Katlin suggested that Klitschko could have been poisoned with Haloperidol. The drug has no taste or smell and causes mental disorders, which are accompanied by impaired coordination, a weakening reaction and overall physical weakness. Following the results, Klitschko demanded the tests taken by the Medical Center of South Nevada and the Nevada Quest Diagnostics to be passed on to Dr. Robert Wow for further research, but the A sample had already been disposed of, while the B sample, which was supposed to be stored for years, disappeared.
As a result of the circumstances that surrounded the fight, FBI started an investigation. Judd Bernstein, the lawyer representing Klitschko, suggested that he was a victim of an ongoing fight fixing in Las Vegas (which also included fraudulent medical reports), which was investigated by FBI at the time. Bernstein, along with some other journalists, pointed out that in the last 48 hours before the beginning of the fight, the betting odds in favor of Klitschko rapidly dropped from 11-to-1 to 3 1/2 to-1. According to journalist Keith Teixeira, a group of approximately 40 people associated with Brewster's manager Sam Simon bet from $50,000 to $100,000 on Brewster's victory. Members of Klitschko's team also pointed out that shortly before the fight, a security camera recorded a moment when two people entered Klitschko's booth and were there for four minutes. These people had badges, but weren't members of Wladimir's team. Wladimir's brother Vitali claimed that during registration of the boxer and his team, the card that belonged to Emmanuel Steward's assistant had already been registered on someone else, and that such card would allow its owner to enter any sporting hall in the building.

*Ike Ibeabuchi vs. David Tua threw 91 punches in round one according to CompuBox, 91 again in round two, and 95 in round three, obscene numbers for a Super Heavyweight. By the final bell, Ibeabuchi and Tua had combined to throw 1,730 punches, breaking the Heavyweight record set by Ali vs. Frazier III, when they combined for 1,591 punches - in 14 rounds, two rounds more than Ibeabuchi and Tua had to work with. Ike threw 975 punches, the most ever by a single Heavyweight. Both fighters had a brawling fight style, they were both 24 years old at the time of this epic battle and they were both undefeated going in to this fight. 226 lb Tua's record stood at 27-0 23 KO's while 236 lb Ibeabuchi's record stood at 16-0 12 KO's. This fight is the stuff that dreams were made of. Two Super Heavyweight warriors stood toe to toe exhibiting exceptional heart and endurance. Both boxers threw bombs and neither took a backward step.*
*21 months later, 245 lb Ibeabuchi confirmed that he was indeed the best up and coming Super Heavyweight on the planet by knocking out undefeated 26-0 quick and slick southpaw Chris Byrd. Little Rocky's style will play into Liston’s Giant hands, as it will violate one of boxing’s holy grail rules and that is, “never slug with a bigger slugger.” Especially when that slugger’s name is Sonny Liston; simply put Liston does it all better than Rocky and also has height weight and major reach advantage. I can see Liston’s jab being an even more formidable weapon than usual in this matchup as he won’t have to go looking for Rocky. To put the concept of reach into perspective, you have Liston with a monster 84” reach compared to little Rocky's 67” reach- this would be decisive. I would favour Liston in a big way. Marciano gets flattened faster than Patterson!

Also Mr know it all he knocked out 132 men. Yet you denigrate one of the 3 greatest light heavyweight champions of all time??? What a dope you are. Most of his losses were against men who were heavyweight champions or would become HW champs. Plus he was past 35 for most of his losses. Michael Spinks did not beat Larry Holmes that was a fix from the word go. Especially the second fight. Spinks is definitely a top ten light heavyweight but he pales in comparison to Moore or Charles. You also probably didn't know Charles was much better as a light heavyweight than heavyweight. Also after Charles killed Sam Baroudi he was never the same. Ezzard also KOed 52 men which is over twice as many as Spinks (21) oh let's remember that the last image we saw of Spinks he was being brutalized by Tyson. At least when Moore lost to Marciano he got up 3 times and also dropped Marciano in the second. The ref screwed up by giving a standing 8 to Marciano but oh well. Please remember Qawi ( Braxton)and Muhammad were both on coke when Spinks beat them.

Rex Layne *C-LEVEL.* LaStarza vs. Layne reminds me of watching two midwest club fighters fighting a 4 rounder on an old ESPN card from Muncie, In. Two guys who were not well schooled, standing in front of each other acting like they were insulted if the other guy missed them with a punch. A lot of right hand leads, a lot of jabs with the rear foot leaving the canvas, little/no counter punching, just two guys willing to get hit but showing little boxing skill. Look how bad Rex Layne swings and misses. What an oaf.
Joe Walcott *C-LEVEL.* Walcott's losses is what elevated his status and built up his credentials, not his wins!!! The fact that Walcott was granted (6) title attempts in a (5) year span speaks volumes about how weak the Heavyweight division was at this time!!! And (4) of these title opportunities came immediately after a Walcott loss!!!
Archie Moore *A-LEVEL* MW/LH and *C-LEVEL* HW. Heck, Low Power 171/173 lb Charles beat him 3 times, 182 lb Patterson obliterated him, and 188 lb tiny cruiser Marciano smashed him. Every time Moore Stepped-Up in competition he got KO'D.
Ezzard Charles *A-LEVEL* LH and *C-LEVEL* HW. William Dettloff’s biography *'Ezzard Charles: A Boxing Life'* documents that Charles first felt weakness in his limbs, and some numbness, as early as 1951. This was 3 years before the Marciano fights, and it was also the same year he lost his title.
There it is. Y'all are intelligent enough to make your own judgement about Rocky's *F-LEVEL* resume. Who did he fight? Walcott was 40, Moore 42, Charles had ALS and Louis was washed. To continue claiming he was the Greatest or even top 10 Greatest Heavyweight is absurd. It's no wonder Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward said, *"Marciano was too small. He really wasn't a Heavyweight. 5' 10", exceptionally short arms, very clumsy, cut easy, had troubled balance. 188 lbs was just too small."* @ Emanuel Steward: Ali all time greatest, Klitschko number eight
*"Name one, just one 'Prime' all time great boxer Rocky beat? Failing to name even one proves my comment rings true. Show me any respected boxing publication or analyst that claims Walcott Charles Moore Louis was 'Prime' when they fought him?"*

Floyd Patterson wrote in Victory Over Myself:
*“I loved Cus, but he was not going to let me fight the best because he was afraid I was going to lose. I decided a Champion had to face everyone, even if he loses, and I felt better despite the losses."*
Ironically, even though he lost to Liston and never regained the title, he is still ranked in the top 20 heavyweights of all time precisely because he fired Cus, and fought real contenders, rolling up a record worthy of the Hall of Fame.
After he fired Cus, Floyd faced:
      Muhammad Ali
      Sonny Liston
      Eddie Machen
      Henry Cooper
      Jimmy Ellis
      Oscar Bonavena
      Jerry Quarry
      George Chuvalo
*"I decided a Champion had to face everyone, even if he loses."* (SOMETHING MARCIANO NEVER DID)
Marciano knew he'd have to eventually confront Cleveland Williams, Johansson, Patterson, Liston, Machen, Folley, Valdez, Cooper, Miteff, London, Mildenberger, Jones, Terrell, Chuvalo, Clay, Bonavena, Quarry, Martin and Ellis just to name a few.
*EVERYBODY coulda found out how Marciano woulda done against all these guys had he not Up-n-Quit so abruptly after a measley (7) years while everyone else was fighting (15) to (25) years. For Pete's sake he was only 31 his last fight.*

I like Quarry. I remember him when I was a kid and having dabbled in boxing myself and consider myself a decent historian of the sport, no way Quarry beats Marciano. I don't know why people always say Quarry was a talented fighter. He was easy to hit, so he was not a good boxer, and he only KO'D 32 out of 53, Marciano 43 out of 49. Quarry had 9 losses 6 by Ko, Marciano 0 losses. Marciano was the best-conditioned heavyweight in history. He could throw non-stop punches for 15 rounds. That would have been too much for Quarry. Was Quarry a talented fighter? No, he was a very tough fighter with a tremendous heart. Was Marciano a talented fighter? No, he was a tough fighter with tremendous heart, superbly conditioned and a great puncher with both hands.

You are right especially if he went toe to toe like he did with frazier. His best strategy would have been would have been to box, stick and move and counter punch. The problem is quarry had a stamina problem, getting tired in later rounds and Rocky would eventually land one.

    • @waynej2608

I disagree. I think you're under valuing Quarry's ring skills. He could not only hit hard, but he could counterpunch and box fairly well. Check out his fight with Ron Lyle. Problem was that in some fights, he wasn't in top condition. Like the Norton fight where Jerry had hardly any training for, but took it for the money. Norton, on the other hand, was in peak shape.
I think that Quarry would've given Marciano a good fight. Clearly, we'll never know who wins such a bout, but I'd give the edge to Quarry. That is if Jerry was in the same condition he was in for Lyle and Shavers.
Also, I'd add that Quarry's opposition was tougher. Cheers.

Soft spoken Lennox Lewis at his best was the total package. The last undisputed Heavyweight champion emerged as cream of the crop against some of the biggest punchers in Heavyweight history. Lennox avenged his only two defeats by knockout. He didn't make excuses for his losses, he said, *"It's Heavyweights, you can get caught, but i won the rematches in style,"* and *"Show me a Heavyweight champion without a loss and i'll show you a fighter that fought a lot of nobodies."*
In my opinion 59 year old Lennox Lewis is the GOAT. To hear him talk so clearly and eloquently after going up against 18 Heavyweight Champions is remarkable.
The 18 HW Champions Lewis faced: *Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, Frank Bruno, Tony Tucker, Hasim Rahman, Oliver McCall, Mike Weaver, Henry Akinwande, Tommy Morrison and Ray Mercer were later recognized as WBO champions, British HW champion Gary Mason, European HW champion Jean Chanet, Commonwealth HW champion Derek Williams, Canada HW champion Razor Ruddock, IBF/WBF HW champion Michael Grant and WBC International HW champion David Tua* [[ technically not all were 'World' champions but champions nonetheless ]] *Other notable mentions; Olympic HW Silver medalist Riddick Bowe, Olympic HW Gold medalist Tyrell Briggs, Andrew Golota, Zeljko Mavrovic, Frans Botha and Phil Jackson*
    How many prime topnotch
    genuine 200+lbs Heavyweight
    and 224+lbs Super Heavyweight
Champions did little 184 lb Rocky fight?
Imagine little Rocky trying to fight topnotch
Super Heavyweights with 80" to 86" albatross
wingspans and 30 to 100 lb weight advantages?
I'm sorry Heavyweight was only 175 back then bcz it sure as hell ain't today. It's no wonder Emanuel Steward, an American boxer, trainer, and proven boxing Genius who trained 41 world champion fighters throughout his career said, *"Marciano was too small. He really wasn't a Heavyweight. 5' 10", exceptionally short arms, very clumsy, cut easy, had troubled balance. 188 lbs was just too small."* @ Emanuel Steward: Ali all time greatest, Klitschko number eight
It's amazing the way Rocky fans belittle Lennox for losing twice yet they always fail to mention the *((753))* losses Rocky's opponents had? Why is that? For Pete's sake *((753))* losses is astronomical. Why so many? *"In the old days, ringers could boost their income by fighting repeatedly. Padding your record against weak opponents can yield good results-The real stumble-bums are the guys who make a career of losing. In small-time boxing, the less-talented fighter often gets most of the cash. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. In the years that followed, Rainford met Ali and asked him about the famous fight with Shavers, “I can not remember the last round of our fight,” Ali admitted. “He hit me so hard that for fourteenth round, I was on autopilot. I can’t remember a thing. When I’ve watched the fight back, and see the way I rallied in the fifteenth round, I was doing that off memory.” Shavers reigned down on Ali with 266 punches that night.

Jerry was a bleeder. He lost some of his most important fights with lots of fight spirit still in his fists & standing -- but he was stopped by a TKO.
Rocky Marciano would not have been a good idea unless Jerry got really lucky early & KO artists like Jersey Joe Walcott & Ezzard Charles failed.
Rocky's endurance, stamina & strength was overwhelming. He trained much harder than average heavyweights & that was the key everyone seems to forget. He was fresh even in the late rounds (Look at the Walcott fight). That's scary & during the fight, he always came forward with fists firing away and with speed. You seldom see this today. He never clinches or allows it. Never appears tired.
Quarry would have the heart to fight Rocky & the experience -- especially doing well in the early rounds -- but he wouldn't have the resilience once he started getting hit with those solid Marciano punches.
Even Roland LaStarza admitted that wherever Rocky hit it hurt (Joe Louis echoed the same thing a few years later). Marciano sent LaStarza, a formidable puncher at the time, to the hospital with broken bones in his face after knocking him out of the ring.
It makes me sad what happened to Jerry Quarry. This is a boxer deserving of the heavyweight crown. He was a great fighter. Gave Ali a lot of trouble & Ali gave him chances.
Peculiar, that Sonny Liston who was still fighting at the time never signed on the dotted line to meet Jerry Quarry. Just a thought.

Jerry Quarry gave his all in the ring during a time when you had some of the greatest heavyweights of all time AT THE SAME TIME at their peaks …Quarry fought 3 of the best in Ali, Frazier and later Norton. Joe Frazier when asked about Quarry said “Jerry came to FIGHT!”
Jerry was the first of the white hopes since Marciano and was followed up decades later by Cooney.
***If you could’ve packaged Jerry’s ability to FIGHT with Cooney’s size and hitting power the dreams of all of those fans clamoring for a white heavyweight champ would’ve come true.
    >The closest to that was Gerrie Coetzee who KO’d Dokes in 1983 …Coetzee didn’t fully fill the void because he was South African.

Quarry's biggest drawback was his management. I think his father managed him. He was allowed to spar without head protection. This accounts for his later dementia. Folks don't realize these guys are boxing every day in training against some tough partners. They also employed some stupid strategy like trying to out box a boxer in the Ellis fight and trying to out slug Frazier in that one. I would have had him stick and move against Frazier. I would never have allowed him to fight Frazier the second time. I imagine that too did damage. Who told him to take a rest in the Chuvalo fight and wait until nine?

Jerry was a very, very good fighter in an era of great ones. But the reality is Marciano would have destroyed him. Remember prime Quarry only fought a draw against Patterson. Quarry and Bonavena would have been a good matchup, too bad it never came off. Marciano was stronger, tougher, had better stamina, and hit harder. But Jerry was tough and had there been a cruiserweight divsion in his day he would have been champ for a decade.

Archie Moore decked Rocky. Archie was a light heavyweight. You can't judge a fighter by who knocked him down. Oscar Bonavena knocked Joe Frazier down twice- and lost. Joe never decked Oscar. Joe knocked Ali down and won the first fight. Joe got knocked down 6 times in his first fight with Foreman. Big George knocked him out. Ali knocked George out, but he was never able to knock Frazier down in 3 fights. Jerry had a strong chin.I think he was only knocked down 3 times, and he fought some rough guys.

Of all the men that Qarry lost to, the only ones that I think that he would not have ever beaten were Ali and frazier. I felt that after the second Frazier loss he really was then finished. I think that he could have beaten Norton in Jerry's prime. Also even at the time when I was only like 12 yrs old, could not understand why he went after Frazier, and not for a rematch with Jimmy Ellis. Like the one man above says about Quarry, he should be in the IBHOF, so should Ellis. Simply the history of kids working on the farm. However the story would seem to accentuate the point of how strong Liston was. He grew up with a father that eventually disappeared and a mother who was on and off drugs. He use to hang out in abandoned houses and hide from other people. I quite enjoyed the 100 Greatest Heavyweight series, and it got me thinking about how nice a boost *"Time"* tends to give to a fighters ranking.
    1962:
In December 1962, a Ring magazine poll of 40
boxing experts had Jack Dempsey rated the
#1 Heavyweight of all-time, with Joe Louis
    2nd, Jack Johnson 3rd and Marciano 7th.
    1971:
In 1971, Nat Fleischer, boxing's most
famous historian and also editor and founder
of Ring magazine named Marciano as the
10th greatest Heavyweight champion of all-time.
    1998:
Despite the intervening years producing the likes of Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield, Klitschko's et al.," in 1998, Ring magazine named Marciano as the 6th greatest Heavyweight champion ever.
    2005:
We float around to 2005 and
    Marciano was named the 5th
greatest Heavyweight of all-time by the
    International Boxing Research Organization.
    2007:
In 2007, Marciano was named the 4th greatest Heavyweight of all-time by ESPN behind Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and Jack Johnson.
    2023:
    We skip to modern day,
    and somehow he's
    been bumped up to 3rd.
Will he one day be greater than Ali???
It's easy to see Rocky's progression. The key is understanding why? Despite his perfect record against the weakest and smallest Heavyweight division of all-time Rocky was never close to being rated towards the top throughout the 1960's and 1970's. So why did he climb from 10th in 1971 to 3rd today? Bcz the greatest boxing historian whoever lived and founder of The Ring Mr. Boxing himself Nat Fleischer died in 1972. They all started passing away including Rocky in 1969. That's when his fame really started to grow. After his death is when all the sympathy articles begin to appear. Then it just grew and grew to the point where little 184 lb Rocky could walk on water and beat every Super Heavyweight champion with ease.

Lets take a look at your theory that time tends to boost a fighters ranking. Lets take guys like Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, and Jack Johnson. Has time given those fighters ranking a boost? If your theory is correct, it definitely would and they would widely be considered the 3 best HW's of all time. After all, much more time has passed since their career ended than Rocky. .

Only reason Rocky's KO against Walcott was so great is bcz he caught Walcott precisely on the point of his chin which snap-twisted his head around more than 90° cutting oxygen off instantaneously *(one in a thousand shot).* Little 5' 9" 184 lb Rocky catches lightning in a bottle *ONE* time and his fans automatically assume he's the "Most Powerful" puncher that ever lived.
