I'm 3 months in and I'm struggling... fighting depression because I'm so used to wearing wigs, getting perms, and having length around my face...I'm so happy I found this
You hit every point in this video about the awkward stage. I feel like my face is so fat so the short style doesn’t complement my face. Some days are better than others. I’m trying to embrace the journey.
Girl I got so much disrespect at my starter loc phase. 5 years later I get compliments daily. I knew it was coming. We all do even if you don’t have locs or natural hair. A lot of us don’t want to go through that process and I honestly don’t blame them. But bay bee, when you finally get that glow up, it makes it all worth it.
Let me just say... When I saw you I thought..."ooooh her hair is CUUUTE!" Don't let others deter you from embracing EACH stage of your journey. If that includes extensions then go ahead but don't it because you feel like you look "ugly" cause YA DON'T! Brows, skin, lips! On point!! Ya cute! Edit: don't do it...
For me the art of wearing a hat was necessary. Last couple years people have been telling me they can’t imagine me without a hat. 3 weeks ago I took my hat off. People are now saying my hair is amazing. The public is fickle but I knew what was coming. This is my 3 set of locs, now gray and never to be colored. I’m enjoying my hair these days.
I started my second set and mine are gray never to be colored as well! It’s been one month and not exactly pretty yet but I don’t care. I know they will be awesome soon enough. I’m trusting the process!
Don’t do it girl I had loc extensions for 6 years I cut them off 2 years ago n decided to start my journey to teach myself patience. I feel like I’m going thru the ugly stage but I’m accepting and trusting in this process
This is how I’m feeling. I’ve been perming, wigging and braiding for all of my adult years trying to look like every other person knowing full and well my hard 4c hair wasn’t blending especially with those Brazilian and remi hairs. I got so tired of cover up and trying to impress that I’m doing now for me and my comfort and my liking and myself. However….. lol I am at this short loc phase, ny roots ante thick and puffier than my ends and most days I’m second guessing but I think I’m gonna be strong in my patience and however I be looking then that’s too bad. My office ppl are so used to not seeing my like this I know they wanna ask me “why” so bad lol 😂 but my husband and family accepts it so idc about others opinions
You're absolutely gorgeous. I think folks call it the ugly stage because they aren't used to looking at themselves yet. Locs drastically change your look, and it takes a min to adjust it. But trust me, you look bomb!
I’m so glad I came across your video because I’m 5 months in and this ugly stage is hard to grasp.. I just keep it covered when I go out to the stores or outing just so I don’t look unkept.. we are in this together ladies!! Thanks again for sharing
Omg girl I have started my loc journey 2 weeks ago and once I reach the "ugly stage" I plan to call mines the personality stage🤣🤣🤣❤️ I even decided to name my locs Cynthia (Angelica's doll from the little rugrats🤣) This way I can put a positive spin on the whole ugly stage. I also will be doing the scarfs and head wraps too. Great video!
I am starting my lox journey and I found your channel. Thank you for showing this phase. It means a lot to see it. I have been in my head about how short my hair is and I’m glad to know that I am not the only one who feels this way.
Hey hey! I’m almost a month in and I’ve been making sure my eyebrows are done and my lashes are on so I wouldn’t think about my hair so much. I’ll make sure I wore nice big earrings as well.
I’m in this stage ❤I totally understand. I’ve been wearing braids and weaves for years and I have heat damage as well! I got my starter locs put in a little over a month ago and I’m struggling to feel pretty. I do however have a new outlook on my hair and the texture- I think it’s beautiful and I love the curl pattern. But my hair is short, kind of thin on the edges and people aren’t use to seeing me with very short hair.. so its hard on my self image and self esteem. Keep going my sista this stage won’t be forever and you’ll grow to appreciate your hair more and more as your locs mature. This is a journey and you are not alone ❤
I understand where you are and I’m going through it!!! I thought about loc extensions also but decided against it. I’m 8 months into my journey and I’m loving it!!
You are absolutely beautiful. Healthy hair, skin, and lovely personality. We all have to start somewhere. I was a loose natural for about 8 years before getting locs. It was so frustrating and I literally alternated betwen a bun and braids. Getting locs was the best decision for me. You have to do what works for you. I looooove you in the headwrap ❤❤❤❤. Enjoy the journey.
Stumbled across this video while looking up loc videos. I'm getting my starter locs this Friday. (4 days from now) I struggle with my self-image and this has legit been a concern of mine. Thank you for being open and honest with your journey. I'm tuning in a year later, but this speaks to me. 💖
You're not alone sis. To not fixate on my locs not being long enough yet, when I go out wear headwraps and like to have my nails did during this time while my locs are super short😊
I’m so glad I found your page! I restarted my starter locs this week and I am really trying hard to be kind to myself right now. I too started wearing more makeup and I need to get a new pair of hoop earrings. Your head wrap is gorgeous, I need to get a few. I just keep telling myself it will be worth it in the end, and make sure to talk myself out of wigs, extensions or anything else that could stunt my growth! Thank you for sharing ❤
This is perfect. Thanks for sharing love. Just got here by searching for protective styles for starter locs cos I’m looking terrible after just a month in. I started with braids and I look like I’m lost😂. Unfortunately I’m not a makeup fan but definitely trying the glasses and scarfs. ❤❤
I never felt like I had an ugly stage. I actually love my hair more and more everyday. Just 4 months in. I do ware my hates tho, they really help between retwist. Love the content and your energy! Hang in there before you know it your locs will compliment you and your style.
I feel you on the ugly stage, but from watching different videos on starter locs we just have to go through the stages and let our hair do what it’s going to do. I’m almost 4 months into my Loc Journey and I wear head bands and scarfs and just roll with it. It will get better as your locs mature. Hang in there❤️
Thank you for this! I haven’t started my loc journey yet and I’m looking to, this made me really think about why I would dislike the way my locs might look (most of it coming from fearing looking too masculine with short hair ) and how I could combat it, this really makes me feel like I’m not alone 😌❤️
I felt the same way before I came across your page ...I am one month in and was going to yarn twist over my locs...but then I looked at my hair and I actually like the fullness and them being all over my head however the may fallb...and I thought to myself this is me and I am embracing this journey...I wear wraps to and have hats...but yes been doing my eyebrows to take away from those thoughts...you got this I got this ...new subscriber also...beautiful we are accepting ourselves throughout this journey!! Peace Queen...
Love this! I’m currently 9 weeks into my journey and it has been quite the struggle for me. To fuzziness, unraveling, and just feeling so unattractive. But I’ve noticed the more I take care of myself, the longer my hair gets. So, definitely continue to drink lots of water, take biotin supplements, and do not do extensions. I’ve come to appreciate the process and not be so hyper focused on appealing to anyone but myself. 💕
Yes started mines in January and I too contemplated on cheating lol with the loc extensions. I opted out because I want to fall in love with my hair and face. I was a bundle girl for 15 years straight 😳. I have good days and bad days since I did a huge chop very low and once it could twist got them loc. Thanks for this video. I do the same wear accessories cause I be waking up looking like a stud 🤣. Great video! I subscribed
thank you for sharing this video because I just started this journey and I thought today why? but after listening to you I believe that I’ll journey on and see where the end takes me…again thank you.
First, thank you for posting a video of your journey. Most people on social media only post their older locs or a fresh retwist. Cutting the relaxed portion of my hair, plus my shrinkage has got me going crazy with my hair length. I just started my journey and I'm trying to stick with it but it's hard when you see instagram reels of people combing their locs out. My face is chubby and I'm so tempted to go back to box braids. I feel so insecure at this stage 😢
You look beautiful!I just stated mine, three days ago I can relate to your wave of emotions and feelings.I am going to use your tips, all and all let’s embrace the journey it’ll be well worth it!
I so needed this😘😘😘it's even harder when you need to pull off that classy look for functions🤦♀️I sometimes throw on a head scarf but we are going to stick it out🥰🥰🥰
I am 5 weeks into my journey. I was straightening my hair prior as well. However, I didn’t let my loctition cut the straight parts so I could pull my hair back into a ponytail. Watching your videos have inspired me to go ahead and cut it off.
5th month and the struggle is real. Covid weight and crazy hair days, ugh! I have a faux hawk and lots of shrinkage. Can't seem to find a style I like. Hats and scarfs are OK but hot! I remain committed though 💯 😌
I just started October 9th I’m about 6 weeks in I believe I’m also in that stage of my journey many say it looks good but you know we can be our own worst critic ! Thank you for this encouragement I’m going to keep going 😊
Hey hun I love your hair ..and there’s so such thing as the ugly stage ...us queens can have no hair and still look gorgeous..I’m on this journey with you .were about the same length and same amount of time loc’d ..you’re not a lone 😘😘
Thanks for the video I’m starting my own locs too but I’m just gonna wear my hair no hats I’m good! But I love your style of hats it’s my natural hair I’m learning too love this! Short hair and try too be confident with the look! My hair is also short! But I’m ok with it it’s me!
I just started my Loc journey about 5 days ago and I already can tell I’m gonna need accessories so I have a scarf I just need to learn how to wrap it like yours, I have a headband which I love, and hoop earrings, so I’m set for when I can’t take it any more.
I just wear wigs, half up and down sewing and times I put in braids or long locs...alot of ppl don't even remember I am growing locs until I post my length check!
I’m 3 months loc’d today and I’m going though this awkward phase! I wouldn’t call them ugly but they’re definitely rough lol!😂 I’m like the head wrap queen now.
I just started mine two weeks ago with “Insta locs” and I sweat so and some in the back and around the side have unraveled. I too will wear wraps as well because going to the gym I sweat. After 6 weeks I’ll retwist.
I Combed out my waist length locs from 6-7 years ago last year, & I'm 3 months in punching the damn air. I hate the long process 😭 but I know they'll drop when I least expect it. Keep going ladies ! ❤
I’m 1 week loc’d & I’m ready to quit, sis 😭 I am SO uncomfortable. Going from long/full hair during my 10+ years of being a loose natural to these shrunken baby coils is killing meeee! I’m gonna try to trust the process though. Got some head wraps, head bands, hats, etc. I’m just gonna do my makeup, put on some cute earrings or glasses, & keep it pushing💪🏾
I'm in the awkward stage as well. And, just like you, I'm uncomfortable with my hair shorter than usual and not complementing my look. I've been wearing a scarf to work and playing up the skincare and accessories more than I did prior to starting my locs. In addition to this, I'm struggling with hard water residue in my locs. In fact, I have some acv and plan to soak my hair to get rid of it and start washing my hair with distilled water. Even with all of this, I don't regret my decision and I'm looking forward to the next stage. 🧘🏽♀️🤗🥰
I am in the baby stage but I come to focus on the health of my scalp rather than aesthetically pleasing locs. Notice one who focuses on aesthetics ends up with ratchet locs. I tie them up with head wraps, scarves, and as you mentioned, accessories! Your locs look nice and healthy❤
This was a really good video! Im in the ugly stage right now, but I don't have a wide variety of scarfs so it's getting more tedious to style/hide my starter locs. I don't even like to call them starter locs because they just look like messy plaits right now 😒
Come on Moesha!!!! Yaaasssss!!! My hair is the length of your locs in this video with some breakage at the nape. I needed to come across you! Following your journey and subscribed!
Girl, I feel you. I’m 4 months in and prior to the locs I was a baldie that used to get a hair cut twice a month so on many days I get myself trying to message my barber because the ugly stage don’t play but I’m trying my best to embrace this journey. My hair is even a bit shorter than yours 🤣. Let’s continue in this journey 💪🏾
Thank you for the tips sis. I just started my locs yesterday and I needed this advice on the jewelry hats and scarves 🙏🏽 ❤ I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I love the Moesha song in the intro too.
I recommend this channel to everyone. But some inspiration with dealing with the "ugly stage" is Ingrid Hart. I'm like her cheerleader. Her hair is beautiful, you may not agree with her technique but she is a great example of how short hair tho it may seem funky. Stick with it and it'll end up beautiful
You're right, I love her! I chose her method. It's a very free way of going about locs that don't require much effort. But no matter how we start or how we chose to handle our locs. We all at some point will feel ugly. I'm going through it right now, which is why I'm here.
I'm in my 3 months on my journey and it seems like my locs just not growing at all so I been wearing wigs lol this is definitely my ugly stage but I'm going to try n go threw this process
This is my 2nd set of locs (started in Oct 2020). I was previously loc’d for 9 yrs. My first set came without the ugly phase because I started with extensions (I just couldn’t see myself going into the office with not only short hair (my relaxer was cut out, so my hair was super short), but also kinky hair (2009). Fast fwd to 2020, I restarted without extensions, but still real short. While I’m comfortable with the shortness, I still don’t like the short fuzziness aka “the ugly” phase, ESPECIALLY since I’ve gained some weight this past year. I really don’t like that my hair no longer frames my face. Sooo, I’ve bought MANY different scarves/headwraps, and I love them.
I’m one week into my loc journey. I was only 5 months post relaxer flans growing out a pixie cut. When I tell you the coils humbled me so quick. I’ve been wearing a wig since I got it done. 😔
Omg ty I’m going through the same thing just started my loc journey and I had to cut a lot of my hair from the damage perm and now my hairs short I feel bald headed with my locs so I wear scarfs and make up to try to cover it .I told my husband I might get a wig to put on but he’s like no smh I don’t know what to do
I love your style especially with the golden headwrap and glasses! you and your locs are beautiful!! you have such a beautiful face and radiant skin. I don't have locs myself, I actually just went natural during quarantine (last relaxer was march 2020) and my biggest issue with my natural hair is that it's short and doesn't frame my face yet like my long relaxed hair did. i feel more confident with my short natural hair now after seeing this video though. if i look even half as beautiful as you do then i'm good!
Girllllllllllll yes, I’m in the ugly stage. 8 weeks in and my hair is budding a little bit and it’s like my hair has shrunken and some of it looks like locs and some of it looks like a bush 😞
I just started my lock journey almost 5 months ago and I’m feeling the same way. My hair is starting to bud and lock but my ends are still an issue with me. I have blond ends and my stylist didn’t want to cut my hair. Some days I’m loving other days I’m like who the heck am I. It’s definitely a challenge for me as I would always change my hairstyles, short cut, color, and I was using relaxers. All around this is a really difficult journey. I will say it is teaching me patience and appreciation for being natural. I can finally get 2 ponytails but can’t do that all the time as it hurts. I am glad that I started my local journey and looking forward when I arrive at that stage where it is fully locked
I understand literally 4 going on 5 months in and I just was telling my husband and mom I’m going to cut my locs off 😂 but every woman getting locs goes through it from the frizz to the feeling of looking unpolished but I’m learning to just go with the flow and love my hair in ALL stages. Also patience and Affirmations help too ❤️maybe getting some cute loc jewelry! Speaking love and life into your hair each time you oil your scalp! So proud of you for starting your journey! I understand because currently going through this and trying to accept myself and know that my hair is BEAUTIFUL!
I’m about to get locs in a week due to having 2 kids under 2 plus I’m tired of getting braids or styles that I’m not satisfied with . I’m scared of the ugly stage that I’m about to go through but all the same I’m tired of the attachment I have with my hair . You look gorgeous by the way
I started mine a month ago and I feel like I went through the ugly phase six times . I put Loc extensions in for a week , took them out(without cutting ),screamed for a little then I got over it all in a month 😂😂
I’m here ! I’m 6 months in and I feel like it’s got thicker but not longer . Some days I like it some days I don’t it’s a balance lol I’m trusting the process and I’m so proud of myself for sticking with it !
I started Sisterlocs and I’m almost 6 months into my journey! Started with fine thin hair! I must admit the first few months were ‘WTH was I thinking”??? However, I decided to trust the process and I love the changes I am seeing! At first, it was no problem wearing Grace Eleyae satin caps because they are very stylish.... wearing caps and scarfs got old! Recently, I freed myself and started going out without covering my locs! Thank God I’m working from home during this stage! BTW, I love your locs! I can’t wait until my SL’s mature! Thanks for sharing your journey!!!
You look beautiful, I just started locs last week. My hair is only two inches and my face is fat I definitely need to lose weight. I can't wait until my hair get the part where I can pin them up.
Meeee! I got it done during my period, and my hormones were raging!! Then, I stopped crying, and decided I’m beautiful…eff this!! It’s a journey, but I keep thinking about where it will be…patience Chile.. I don’t have it either lol
Loved this video. I started my locs about 4 weeks ago and have not had a retwist yet. Definitely started looking for ways to combat the ugly stage, headwraps and scarfs. Need to get more earrings and may even consider getting some cute frames to wear with my contacts.
YOUR HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL AND YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL😁 LOCS ARE NATURAL FOR US, THEY RELEASE US FROM HEAT DAMAGE, TIGHT BRAIDING, CHEMICALS, AND WEAVE WEARING AND WIGS. SO WEAR YOUR LOCS PROUD. I AM ABOUT TO START MINE, CAUSE I AM SO DONE😀
I'm 3 months in and I'm struggling... fighting depression because I'm so used to wearing wigs, getting perms, and having length around my face...I'm so happy I found this
Stick with it girl, I felt exactly how you do when I started my locs!
love the moesha vibes in the beginning 😂😂😂
Thank you!
Me too
Right! 👑
Lol!!!!
That alone made me subscribe immediately
You hit every point in this video about the awkward stage. I feel like my face is so fat so the short style doesn’t complement my face. Some days are better than others. I’m trying to embrace the journey.
I started 2 months ago and my hair looks like tumble weed.

I'm trying my best to stay patient but it's hard! lol Luckily I'm mostly at home due to covid so it's making this process easier.
@@JasmineTyon you got this!!!! I feel you I was so tempted to just slap on a wig n go to work the other day lol
This is how I’m feeling. I just started my journey today and your correct I told myself the same thing have to keep my eyebrows and lashes done
You’re locs are beautiful trust me the journey isn’t for everyone but yours are gorgeous TRUST THE PROCESS SIS you will not regret it
Thank you!
Trust the process. I turned one year yesterday. This process helped me define who I am and what’s important to me. I embraced the “ugly” .
I’m in this stage ❤I totally understand. I’ve been wearing braids and weaves for years and I have heat damage as well! Don't do the extension you'll appreciate it way more one you get full length locs

Ugly? Mmm.. nope! Rock EVERY stage! Who told you short is "ugly"?
You have THE perfect face for that stage!

I love the scarf look on black women, it’s just something about it I love.
This just helped tremendously ❤❤With it being the hot season I haven't thought of wearing my head wraps.
I just started my Loc journey about 5 days ago and I already can tell I’m gonna need accessories so I have a scarf I just need to learn how to wrap it like yours, I have a headband which I love, and hoop earrings, so I’m set for when I can’t take it any more.
I understand you! Don't give up! It is a process. You are beautiful! Just do it.
I just wear wigs, half up and down sewing and times I put in braids or long locs...alot of ppl don't even remember I am growing locs until I post my length check!
Love your thickem look of your locs go girl♥️ gurl the wrap is everything a tutorial is needed and thank you
Thank you so much 🤗
I appreciate your honesty. You and your locs are beautiful
I think your hair is so cute and compliments your face! Can we get this fresh face/ everyday makeup tutorial? I love your brows. 😍
Love the fashion options for the locs... great job!!!
I Combed out my waist length locs from 6-7 years ago last year, & I'm 3 months in punching the damn air. I hate the long process 😭 but I know they'll drop when I least expect it. Keep going ladies ! ❤
May I ask why did you cut the 6-7 year locs. Were they too heavy
@@shirleyvanburen4087 Only whenever I washed them they were heavy. But I cut them with the feeling of wanting to just start over honestly!
Just started my journey and I must say hats are my new friend!
Thanks for sharing you journey!
Just got my loc’s today...yesterday it’s past midnight now.. luv these first 3 video’s of yours, gonna follow your journey as I go on mine.
Got my first locs yesterday! Let’s do this!
I appreciate your very concise, straight to the point, well constructed video. I am
In the same stage and you've helped tremendously. Thanks!
Girl you are Gorgeous, and the "ugly " Stage will fly by so quickly just enjoy it trust me 2 years in and loving every bit 😊❤
Hi! New subbie here! Please show us more about the head wraps. This stage is a struggle lol
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check her out!
Same. I’m 2 months and 2 weeks loc’d and it’s as short as yours too😭 we are really brave
Nice touch with the hats and glasses. You are on the right track.
Great advice! Teach us how to wrap our head with the wrap.
Omg ty I’m going through the same thing just started my loc journey and I had to cut a lot of my hair from the damage perm and now my hairs short I feel bald headed with my locs so I wear scarfs and make up to try to cover it .I told my husband I might get a wig to put on but he’s like no smh I don’t know what to do
I just started my loc journey and I'm Also going through the ugly stage , it's rough but we'll get through it
i don't feel pretty right now i'm trying to stay the course it's hard tho. reading these comments does help
Yes .. me as well ..
Yeppppp
Great video and you’re looking good with accessories. I’m almost 3 weeks into my starter locks. Thx for info.
Between 6-9 months is when the growth is seen….in my opinion. I’m 8 months in and finally wearing my locs out😂
I just started my lock journey almost 5 months ago and I’m feeling the same way.
It's good to know I wasn't the only one feeling like this you gotta trust the process
It looks so much nicer now than when you started… not even debatable
I understand literally 4 going on 5 months in and I just was telling my husband and mom I’m going to cut my locs off 😂 but every woman getting locs goes through it from the frizz to the feeling of looking unpolished but I’m learning to just go with the flow and love my hair in ALL stages. Also patience and Affirmations help too ❤️maybe getting some cute loc jewelry! Speaking love and life into your hair each time you oil your scalp! So proud of you for starting your journey! I understand because currently going through this and trying to accept myself and know that my hair is BEAUTIFUL!
Lawd I see how cute you got everybody else in their ugly stage. Nobody seen my starter locs yet and I’m going on 2 months 😩 Le struggle
I’m about to get locs in a week due to having 2 kids under 2 plus I’m tired of getting braids or styles that I’m not satisfied with . I’m scared of the ugly stage that I’m about to go through but all the same I’m tired of the attachment I have with my hair . You look gorgeous by the way
See..I love what u did there! Intro was 🔥
Yeahhh glasses and jewelry makes it looks 10x better ❤
make-up and slaying edges hunty💚
This is what im going through right now the ugly stage. It's been over a month I don't even see growth is this normal.
You are gorgeous 😍.. Even the "ugly" stage looks amazing on you
Ok so please teach a sister how you wrapped that wrap b3cause I'm currently going through this stage and mine are a bit shorter so yeah, HELP ME 😫😫
I started mine a month ago and I feel like I went through the ugly phase six times .
I love keeping up with your journey alongside my own🥺❤️
You look beautiful, I just started locs last week. My hair is only two inches and my face is fat I definitely need to lose weight. I can't wait until my hair get the part where I can pin them up.
New subscriber!!! I started my journey on March 1st 2021. Thanks for these tips, queen.❤💛💚
Yes Queen!
Started mine on February 24th 2021, we're practically around the same time!
Would you like to be loc friends? ^-^
You editeddddd this video hunnaaaayy!!! Well done
Thank you!!
