    I have owned them both, and if you work in the trades, drive a truck or do a lot of outdoors stuff, go with the Surge. If like he said, you want it to open Amazon packages, work on your bicycle or tinker around the house, you might want the Wave. Also if you are a female with smaller hands you might find the Wave easier to manipulate. I use the Surge as my EDC at work and gave the Wave to the wife.

    A huge advantage I sent for the surge is that you can remove the file to sharpen the blades.
    One question though, what’s the difference between the black oxide and regular stainless in terms of ‘surgical’ hygiene, in case it’s needed to manage first aid applications right after being being used to gut a fish or something? Is the stainless likely to be easier to clean for any reason?
    What are the pros/cons of each finish?

    • @HammerIIHammer
      @HammerIIHammer  2 года назад +13

      Hi yes the removable file is a huge benefit because as you said, you can sharpen the blade with the file within the multi tool which is great for many reasons. The stainless is would be easier to clean in that circumstance as the black oxide coating is classified as a "semi porous" material making it a little more difficult to sterilize if needed/and clean after. The black oxide adds a very minimal amount of thickness to the handles and blades etc so I know some people have had a issue with tools being "tough or sticky" to open as compared with stainless however it seems that improves as the coating wears off at the pivot points. Benefits would be: less reflective/noticable, also the black oxide adds a little bit of grip texture as compared to the plain when it is wet. (but the black oxide does come off and can get on your hands/clothes as well). Pros and cons of both but I prefer the non black oxide myself. Thanks for watching.

    • @jayroland9481

      Fear not, I've read several Amazon reviews where buyers have complained the black oxide finish comes off so easily.

    The main drawback, is the Charge, (and any locking knife /multi tool), is illegal to carry in public, here in the UK,, !!! So, I can only use it around the house, or garden,,, and hence my recent switch to SAK's,,,, which fall within our "stupid" laws, for carrying most places,,, 👍,,

    Surge wins hands down as a work edc, but don't be fooled the T-shank isn't quite the tool it's marketed as, my boss broke a jigsaw blade - no worries I whipped out the surge and tool the blade out - its thicker than a standard t=shank blade which also means a standard t-shank blade is a little loose in the surge.

      @@johnnyringo2185 never seen a man who works with his hands say "I wish I didn't have a bottle opener" at the end of the shift. Scissors are safer than using a blade to cut cord/belt etc. Fine glasses screwdriver in the bit kit is extremely handy, frustrating that there is no holder on the surge for it though!
      TBH, I have the Surge and it's too big for medium sized hands. The design failure is in the tall blades and simply scaling up the Wave design; the handles are too far apart as soon as you grab anything thick with the pliers. If the blades were scaled back a few mm in height then the few degrees the handles would close further would make it a better tool.
      Adam Savage mentions this when he explains why he carries a Wave, and in hindsight I have to agree with him.

      @@scod3908 I keep a bottle opener stuck on the front of my fridge with a magnet…..bc that’s where the beer is. If you’re not mature enough to cut rope or cord with a knife blade go back to kindergarten. As for the micro driver, yea it’s occasionally useful but it deletes tools that would be far more useful in daily use. As for the size that’s objective and personal preference. I wear medium size gloves and have never had trouble using the surge. I favor the rebar for daily carry but if I want a larger toolset surge is a better option. As for Adam I’ve been a fan of his for years but that doesn’t mean just because he carries a wave means it’s the best option

    • @scod3908
      @scod3908 12 дней назад

      @@johnnyringo2185 strangely enough, I use the correct tool for the job when I'm in a set location or workstation. The multitool is for when you're not by the fridge. When someone hands you a beer in the field you'll be emasculated quickly asking for an opener to have them flip the cap off for you with a random item like a lighter.
      You'd be surprised how often people cut themselves using a blade where scissors would have been a much safer choice. It's also difficult to cut an accurate length of something without a suitable cutting surface, especially if you can't bend the thing you're cutting at an acute angle over the blade.
      I'm a medium or large glove, average sized male hands. My ideal grip on the handles is when the pliers are basically closed. On a wave it's much more ergonomic. It's just a fact that they scaled up the wave and didn't correct/adjust this ergonomically. Look at the Free and the ARC - they corrected the handle angle issue on those models
