  • Isafjordur is an extreme airport as its located in a fjord which requires the pilot to fly his aircraft very close to the surrounding terrain then making a full 180 degree turn on final approach just before landing. AIR ICELAND is the only airline allowed to service this airport and pilots require special training to be allowed to fly into Isafjordur Airport.
    The complete Flightdeck film is nearly 5 hours long and includes 10 flights within Iceland as well as to Greenland.

    I have been a fan of this airport for many years. Since 2009 :-). Even made a FSX landing video from 2009. In 2012 I actually went by car to Isafjodur. Stopped at a cafe in the harbor and told the locals that i was there for seeing a landing. The guy at the bar even called the airport to check if we could see a live landing. And he was also a pilot student and told me about the left turn with max flaps with continuous descent was critical. The locals loved I went there just for that. Great video. Thanks

    This is a special "bespoke" airport in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. That means it was enhanced over the default airports, probably by Gaya Studios. The surrounding mountains make it very scenic. And the landing is a toughie. Lot's of cruise ships stop here.

    BEFORE Isafjordur had a land-based runway. The following is a quote cited from page 47 of my book, History of the Radar Sites of Iceland. It describes how US Air Force personnel were transported from 1956 to 1959 from Reykjavik to their radar site named H-4 located on the top of Mt Straumnes. They flew in a Flugfelag Airlines converted WW2, PBY-5A Catalina.
    “Those on board were told that Isafjordur had no runway and they would have to land on the water in the narrow, mile-wide, fjord adjacent to the fishing village. To make matters worse, the fjord was lined with 1,500 foot high cliffs on either side. Although the PBY-5A Catalina is a durable aircraft, it was very difficult to fly. The pilot had to constantly trim the aircraft especially when passengers moved about. The engine controls were large, requiring firm, strong hands by the captain. More important, since the plane had a low profile, landing the PBY had at least one built-in hazard. When nearing touchdown on water, the plane needed to be almost perfectly level. If not, one of the floats attached to the end of the wing would “catch the water.” When that happened, the aircraft could crash. This rarely occurred when landing on calm water, but the prevailing winds near Isafjordur were often strong. The weather at Isafjordur was usually overcast and covered with fog. On many flights the pilot would have to fly around watching for a hole in the clouds. Once located, he would dive the craft through the opening to make the approach to the sea landing. This made for a very exciting descent! In choppy seas, the PBY struck the water with a force that could jar the insides of the passengers and crew alike. The flying boat sat so low in the water that a first-time traveler would honestly believe that the plane was sinking. When the plane taxied to a stop, it was met by a motorized 25-foot Icelandic life boat which bobbed up and down next to the aircraft. John Broughton, 1959-60, related, “We were told to ‘Yump’ into the little boat. When I hesitated, the order was repeated, so I ‘Yumped.’” Once docked, they checked into a small hotel and prepared for the next day’s adventure. This first of the four stages of the journey to H-4 was actually the least adventurous. The next stage tested the nerves and stomach…”

      With the Dash8 Q400 it is really really difficult. (In this video they use the Q100 when I'm not wrong).

      I don't think the airport is equipped with ILS transmitter, and I think the mountains around wouldn't make this feasible either. You can fly by NDB up to the point where they turn into the fjord but at that point must fly visual approach. This means in low clouds landings must be aborted. I'm not 100% on this.

    • @cun7us
      @cun7us 4 года назад

      @@justplanes I agree that it may be the only viable location in the area as it looks quite mountainous, however I don't believe it was done to give pilots a workout (unless that was meant in jest 😁). One of the main factors of aviation is to make it as safe as possible. No matter how good a pilot is, doing a 180 degree turn close to the ground and a mountain raises the risk factor considerably, especially during bad weather.

      @ionut8256 4 года назад

      @@johnnycharisma162 It's physically the same runway, but when you use the other end of it, it would be called runway 26. Runways are numbered according to their direction/heading (how many degrees a compass would show if you pointed it straight across the runway). For example, in Isafjordur the runway is 8/26, which means that, if you land the same way as in the video, the plane needs to head towards 80 degrees (pretty much to the east), while landing from the other end means the plane needs to head towards 260 degrees (pretty much to the west). This naming convention is used all around the world. :)
