Standing Out and Fitting In

In this video I go over Georg Simmel’s theory that “standing out” is a form of “fitting in.” This is just important to keep in mind any time you think that one of your aesthetic choices is particularly unique. So in the surfing context, if you’re picking an old school longboard because you don’t want to be like peole who are obsessed with shortboarding, just know that there are zillions of people thinking just like you, and you all form a group of like-minded people who fit in with one another. Humans are social animals and we always find ways to establish some sort of social identity.
