I don't know if he still does but he's said in past videos that he picks them up at thrift shops. People overestimate how much an alteration shop charges for hemming and taking in seams. You can get a decent suit fitted to you for far less than new if you shop right and get over the middle school second hand shop embarrassment some of us have.
I see another problem with the first backpack (the Citadel?), as having "Ultra-Pro" tagged on your backpack pretty much screams "steal me, I have valuable cards inside".
That ammonite looks PERFECT for me. Seems like it’ll make me feel more comfortable walking to and from the places I play at. That power back compartment is also an amazing touch! It’s also good to see other people use the power bank one of my coworkers recommended me! Might pick up this bag when I have the money.
Y'know. That kind of actually makes sense. From a logistics stand point, there is no real reason to make a flap detachable like that. It increases production costs and overall makes no sense to do. It does seem to be a slightly different material, and it is almost perfectly rectangular. Not a bad idea if that was the intent, just bad execution and it's incredibly niche. Would be hard to pull off in a truly successful manner, but it would be cool to see other iterations of this.
The ultimate guard one is a really good backpack. Pick pocketing at large events is a thing, and you’ll be sorry when a 1000-2000 $ deck that you took years to put together is gone. Personally i always walk keeping my backpack by the handle, and always keep it between my legs when i play or look at cards at a stand. But yes a dedicated anti-theft backpack would be a good investment!
After doing my research, I picked up a GOgroove Full-Size DSLR Camera Backpack Case on Amazon and would highly recommend it. The backpack looks high-end and the material has a quality feel, the interior can be fully customized for all sizes of deck boxes (which are easily accessible), there is a hidden compartment that fits a trade binder, the top compartment can hold a full box plus any dice or other accessories, the front flap perfectly fits a digital life total pad, and the sidecar pocket/easy-clip strap is ideal for holding a play mat. The best part is that it’s only $60. Prof-would love to hear your review!
I have been using Ultimate Guard exclusively for awhile, and I was waiting for this for months. This was the icing on the cake, and once my case of transparent Katana sleeves comes in, my gear collection will be complete. I don't play Magic very much, mostly Cardfight! Vanguard, but this bag is amazing for what I have. Currently I carry nine decks (mix of MTG, CFV, BF, and FOW), a 4 column binder (standing in front of deck boxes), a playmat (sadly no place for a case if you use all 6 deck spots like I do, so mine is folded in three in the small pocket), my reusable Evernote notebook (also in small pocket), and my laptop (in big pocket). By far the most functional bag I've ever used, as I can carry my laptop, notebook, and binder and still be able to take nine decks with me in only one bag. And the extra features like the hidden pockets and the power bank slot are actually quite functional since I can put my phone on the charge without leaving it at an outlet somewhere. Granted, this wasn't 100% necessary when it comes to the anti-theft features, as I know everyone at our shop and they've never had issues with theft, but I absolutely love Ultimate Guard and wanted to upgrade my gear haul.
@@Silversigla I have the QuadRow from UG, and yes it can fit that standing up in front of the deck boxes, but not in the pocket, and it's a near perfect fit, so if you have a different one, compare the size to the UG QuadRow Zipfolio to see if it will fit. If the width is any greater than a 5mm difference, I don't think it'll work. EDIT: I checked for you. UG quad is 350 tall and 330 wide. If I had to guess I would say you could get anything that's less than 370 tall and 335 to MAYBE 340 wide to fit, but 340 would be a tight fit and I wouldn't recommend it.
Man I use to play MTG back in college and I miss it. A group of us all played and we only built fun legacy decks to play in a group (up to 5 to 10 players at once) and it was amazing. That feeling of going to our playing table and unzipping our bags, rolling out our new custom playing mat we got over christmas, rolling out our dice and opening that new deck with fresh card sleaves was the best feeling. Now I stick to playing MTG Arena because the cost of playing MTG is so high to do tournaments. In our friend group we played all cards, the only rule was that we couldnt build an overpowered deck to wipe out everyone.
I think one of the main issues I see with the Ammonite is that if you load up a lot of larger boxes into the deck box area it is in the opposite configuration of how you actually want to load a backpack, with heavier objects close to your body, and around your mid-back. I would be concerned with having this loaded up and walking around with it for a significant amount of time since there is no consideration to lumbar support. If it has only a deck box or two, then I wouldn't see an issue, but you can get Anti-Theft camera bags in this style for 1/3rd the price with similar if not better material.
I love u prof and thank you for running this channel....I love MTG but not really wizards so I've made a 10 deck modern proxy cube and have fun each Friday Sometimes I open some packs to support wotc
This is actually a pretty big one for me. Since I can't drive due to health reasons I rely heavily on ride share and public transportation. Having a backpack that can handle what I need to bring into the office and my gaming supplies is a must!
@@GSLegend I'm leaning toward the ultra pro one. It is on the pricey side, but it seems like their will be more than enough room for a couple of deck boxes and my work laptop. Though, I might wait to see if they have any of these (or other gaming backpacks) at PAX east before I make my final decision.
@@Jonasansu really? Even after it gets a C? I pre-ordered the ammonite last month for 120 and I am excited to see it get an A. Wouldn't the tote be better for you if you are looking for board games?
@@GSLegend Opps sorry, I meant the Ultimate Guard. It has been a long day and I had ultra pro on the mind after buying some eclipse sleeves haha. Yeah, the ultra pro is way too small for what I need anyway.
Side note: The Inked pack looks like it would be a good fit for your average (obsessed) D&D players, as that game tends to require more than a few hardbound books of similar size to a TCG folder. Add in the miniatures that many players adopt for PC's or just cool looking mini's for your DM to borrow and that space gets filled rapidly.
Nothing to do with backpacks but I just got my first order from card kingdom for an hazoret edh deck I'm building. Thank you for recommending them. Quality of the order is outstanding!
My bag of choice is a behemoth meant for outdoor hiking/backpacking. Holds 19 fatpacks in the main compartment plus has outer compartments that can hold things like playmats and dice. I can carry all my commander decks and my entire trade collection in that thing. Stupid thing weighs 40 pounds fully loaded and cost $180, but it fit my desires.
So i recently won the the Ammonite backpack from the FacetoFace games Tour weekend this weekend. I remember how good this backpack is from the review that was over 3 years ago. I'm super excited to start using it. It's going to be nice to not have to drop stuff in them and ruin my back and potentially risk damaging my laptop that i often bring along.
I use an Oakley tactical field gear standard issue. I have 8 Commander decks in satin towers, Playmat in the plastic case, a spindown box, and a dice satchel with over 100 D20 with plenty of room for more and more and it holds up to the weight of all that as well. Expensive but perfect
I think there could be an addendum to the Citadel that if you frequent fnm and game groups, that ability to do both things, even if only averagly, becomes a bonus.
I'm way late on this, but I just thought that maybe the flap on the UltraPro was intended to be a playmat of it's own that stores itself on the bag. The positioning of the logo might be another hint of that.
So... How long before I can buy my Ammonite? My LGSs won't say, I see no online sales postings anywhere, and the ones that do show up are for distributors only.
Thank you so much for this vid. Been looking for something to store more board games on the go and that bag got my interest. Second best to that would be the smart and final tote bag. Reusable bag, strong folded plastic, sturdy and can hold about 3-5 board games depending on sizes. Currently for me have dice throne s1 and the s2 collectors taking up most of the space, on small gap have deadwood and recently from Kickstarter called fire in the library. Then sitting on top of the docs throne boxes is my star realms storage box and star realms frontiers.
I put an arkhive into a drawstring backpack. It holds 4 or 5 decks, 2 playmats, a miniature trade binder, some cliff bars, and my lucky Garruk plushie.
I like the Inked Gaming Crate! I was looking for something like this to hold 4x KMC 1000 card boxes + supplies for EDH games with my friends. Definitely going to buy this soon :D
Thank you for the review. I think I'll get that Amz Basic pack (though the Ammonite looks amazing, way too expensive for me at this time, heh). Subscribed.
I'd say the other con to the Ultimate Guard is it looks like it could only really hold one binder. What kind of backpack would be good to hold 4 binders and still have room for deck boxes that isn't ridiculously HUGE like the Ultra Pro or the Tote.
Can we get an addendum? You did not load up the Ammonite back pack. I would love to know how it stores 3 and 4 pocket binders and how it looks fully loaded with deck boxes top and bottom.
May I request that in the future when reviewing storage and transport solutions that you explicitly show REP steel boxes as examples? You say it fits here, but it's hard to tell if it was being used off-handedly as an example of 'any' deckbox or something you had the chance to test. I trust you, but that specific deckbox rarely fits in anything and when it does it's typically awkward.
Similarly, it was shown inside the Garage, but it seemed to extend past the lip and looked like it might not fit with the lid on and definitely wouldn't fit close to the sides.
Thing is, if I were a thief I'd just grab the whole backpack. Makes you a target more than anything because you just know there has to be good shit inside if someone spends so much on a backpack.
This is like watching your uncle trying to blend in with your high school friends.
