What's up guys! My training and nutrition goals are off to a great start in the New Year! Feels great to be in a solid groove with both. I had a nice few requests to do this "grocery shopping" style video after my upload with Bro Jeff, so I was wondering -- is there any other type of video you'd like to see from me or any specific topic you'd like to see me cover? Always looking for ideas. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Free range eggs are only marginally better than caged eggs. To have “free range” on the label, all they need is access to an outdoor area, which is usually a small door that leads to a concrete yard. Eggs labeled “pasture raised” are the most ethical, chickens get 104sq ft of space to roam, and because they are foraging for bugs in the pasture, the eggs are much more nutrient dense

    • @samedmondson5001
      @samedmondson5001 4 года назад +253

Although I'd argue there are ethical issues with all animal products, to call an egg free range in America the farmer only has to let the chickens have access to the outside for any period time at all during the day (could be just one hour). I would suggest finding a local farm where you know the chickens are kept in a good environment. (Or just cutting out animal products all together ;))
I think it's great that you're thinking ethically about your choices Jeff.

Eggs in order of freedom of land available to chickens:
-conventional (never go outside and virtually no space)
-cage free (a little more space, still don’t go outside)
-free range (have outdoor “access” but may still never go outside; check your brand)
-pasture raised (best for you and chicken, typically have at least 108 sq ft. per chicken of real open grass and sunshine)
Pasture raised quality compared to conventional or even cage free is like night and day!! Compare side by side for yourself and you’ll never go back to conventional... worth the extra few bucks per carton for health and ethical reasons imo

"Free range" eggs has definitely become a marketing ploy these days. Companies just play on semantics to circumvent what it implies. Its a bit of a ploy, but at the very least unless the company is doing something illegal the hens will be allowed to socialise/dust bathe and have more stimulation and therefore exhibit more natural behaviours. My best friend works at an organic free range farm and there is a lot of cruelty with the chickens especially during transport such as toes commonly being chops off by the plastic crates and mass suffocation during transport occurs a few times a year needlessly. There are too many unavoidable deaths, however the majority of their lives are being shuffled around the barns and free range area and their quality of life is leaps and bounds above those in cages and barns who, especially the ones that live in cages, suffer their entire lives instead of hours of their lives.

  • @davidchung2953

I’m a small farmer so I can answer your question at 8:02ish: Free range eggs are healthier for you and much more ethical IF they’re truly laid by pastured poultry, or better yet from a local farmer who literally lets their chickens free range (like myself). A way to tell is if the yolks are really bright gold or orange color that’s a good thing. It means a lot of their diet is coming from natural sources outside that they’re seeking out themselves (by free ranging). If the yolks are pale yellow then they’re probably just kept on a crowded dry lot or “cage free”. Which is still better then the huge factory farms with the poor featherless chickens in tiny cages who never see the light of day. But true free range is the best both ethically and for health and taste!

I rejoiced when you admitted you don't track carbs and fat too rigorously. I used to work out and track all macros as close as possible to exact. I was 5'5" and around 13-15% bf at 135 with about a year of experience. I stopped working out and tracking macros for years, and now I'm 215 and about 35% bf. I intended just to work out, but then i started tracking total calories, and have been tracking calories and minimum protein for about two weeks. Your video saying not to look at foods black and white as good or bad has made my eating much easier to maintain (and helped my wallet). I also noted what one of your guests said though that for the thermal effect of food, it is best to focus on single ingredient foods that arent super palatable. I don't like vegetables or really fruit, but i find that a smoothie with one serving fruit, 2 cups spinach, kale , or chards, and 1-2 scoops of protein powder is very easy depending on the fruit. I don't have money for your hypertrophy essentials program right now but every day i try to learn as much from your videos as i can, and will buy it when i can afford to. do you have a video on whether there is a significant difference in gains and lean mass retention based on the protein sources? for example 100% whey isolate vs a blend with whey, casein, and egg protein. is hydrolized whey not worth the extra cash? and is whey concentrate really inferior if your macros can afford the extra fat and carbs and there's not significantly more added sugar. also do you have a video on sugar alternatives and how they do or don't affect your health or metabolism in moderation? or is there a mass research study relevant? edit: gonna watch steph's video on sweeteners

"free range" only means the chickens are outside part of the day - technically (and realistically,) they can still be confined to cramped cages; but as long as those cages are outside at some point, they become "free range." This advice about varying colors of fruits and vegetables is actually in the book of the national strength and conditioning association, in the chapter about basic nutrition. To quote the book:
"a variety of food should be consumed within each groups [fruits, grain, vegetables, protein rich food and dairy]. For example, eating an orange, an apple and a pear provides a broader array of essential nutrients than is provided by three apples. A diet providing a variety of foods from each group is more likely to meet a person's macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). "
I saw this book in some of Jeff's videos on his desk. I'm currently reading it and it's a great read for basic principles on training and nutrition. And the bibliography is solid so yeah science!

I'm sure you are aware that flax only provides ALA, which needs to be converted to EPA/DHA to be usable. This process competes with the conversion of omega6, so for most people an animal source of omega3 (like fatty fish) is better.
As for ethical arguments for 'leaving hens alone', I am going to do what is best for my own/ my family's health and that means eating the best quality eggs. "organic". To me I just have always said "dude, its a plant. It is all organic". it means nothing. Legally the labeling means something to do with it, but every country and region defines it in a different way. Suffice to say though, the science on it says that organic doesn't mean anything for nutrients of the food, and muddy in terms of environmental impact, with some foods grown in "organic" ways being potentially more environmentally damaging. So since it is impossible to know and matters little, just buy the normal stuff. I only ever buy the organic version if it looks like a better batch of veggies and I can justify spending the extra money for it.
Pro tip, either go full hardcore vegan if you want to be ethical, or just do whatever is best for your personal health needs, and remember the same eating protocol is not the best for each person. Anything in between imo, is just a waste of your mental capacity.

Personally, I went fully vegan about 7 months ago which was tough cause eggs and turkey was such a big part of my routine, but with some time and finding good recipes, it became second nature to avoid those foods. I think the real trick here is to not be too too hard on yourself, and try your best to just replace 1 staple meal with one new staple meal that is plant-based, and go from there. For instance, I replaced ground turkey and rice with veggie tofu stir-fry. Very dense in nutrients and protein, but no caged animals involved. Getting into the curry game is also a game-changer, so damn delicious and versatile.
Anyway, that's just me. Thanks for bringing it up.

Hey Jeff! With regards to your question about the free range eggs, that usually just means that there is no cage involved. They’ll usually try and fit as many chickens as possible in a small area; the conditions are still pretty dismal, with the animals essentially living in their own feces and the carcasses of other dead chickens.
It’s really awesome that you’re trying to learn more about the ethical side of animal agriculture. Keep up the good work, I love your fitness content!

I'll also make around 5 or 6 cups (dry) of rice a week that i'll just keep in the fridge and ready to go. I've been putting down alot of apples and mangos recently. I love the summer months because mangos are in season and theyre amazing! I'm not sure how nutritiously dense they are but they are definitely my favorite fruit so i dont care too much.

Free Range Eggs means that they have "access" to the outside. They are kept in sheds, with a door, and possibly windows. But they are still cramped together. The carton should say Organic, Pasture Raised. One trend that is happening in Australia, is stating hens/acre on the carton. Or a better option would be to get them from a local farm, where you know they're pasture raised.
Also, for ethical reasons... Beef is better than chicken or turkey. An individual cow will provide more calories/nutrition than any other animal, which means less die. 1.5-2 cows provide enough food for an adult for an entire year. If you were mainly choosing poultry, over a hundred individual animals would need to be killed.
Obviously pasture raised 100% grass fed/finished is best. You could get a half cow delivered to you in cryo-vac bags, and it would last 6 months in the freezer.

Looking at anything in isolation isn’t a true view of what actually happens. Less animals being slaughtered doesn’t correlate to a better system. Those two cows require more water and resources than those 100 chickens, and take longer to grow to slaughter weight as well. There’s a reason chicken costs less per pound.
I raise my cattle with my chickens. The cows keep the grass that would otherwise go to waste trimmed down. The chickens follow behind the cows, cleaning up any insects they disturb, eat the fly larvae that are in the manure, and scratch the manure into the soil. The two animals complement each other’s foraging patterns well.

Jeff, free range is generally a marketting ploy. But it depends entirely on the supplier. The vast majority of 'free range eggs' are just hens that have been given more space. However they're ususally crammed into a large barn. Which results in the hens growing deformaties and in most cases, dying. Either source your eggs from a farmer you trust and know the hens are being looked after. Or find a supermarket chain that has legitimate free range stances.
The Co-op in the UK is good for legit free range products. but many of the other supermarkets are doing it purely as a ploy to make people feel good about their choice, where in reality, it's not better.
*Source: I have rescued many battery hens when particular farms were closing down and have seen the condition they're in and where they supposedly live. It takes months for the hen to recover. But they will never recover completely.

    Good info Jeff!
Free range is just a marketing ploy. All labels on eggs and meat are to make the consumer feel better. For example- cage free means literally “no cage” so the chickens are instead crammed into a shed and trample over each other. Free range I think means they are allowed a tiny little concrete platform outside. I think it needs to be 2 feet deep. Which is arguably worse because the chickens will fight to get out there. 10s of thousands of chicken offered 2’ of outdoor space. Inevitably it’s going to mess with things like their pecking order.
I’ve been lifting on a strict vegan diet and it has been very effective for me. I love that you are considering the ethics of your food choices. Good to see you are considering the animals who are in these terrible situations. ❤️

Just to answer the question about whether "free range" is just a scam or if it actually is ethically better: the law on what is considered "free range" is super generic and there are so many loop holes that egg/chicken companies take. Most of the time when you see something "Free range" it really just means that in the really large chicken coop there is one tiny door that is open for only a few hours a day. The coops are still massively over packed and the majority of the chickens don't even make it outside during the few hours that the door is actually open. Many of the chickens still die due to many health issues, some chickens are also unable to walk because their legs are so weak and/or broken ): The better alternative is to buy "pasture raised" instead (: I'm so happy more and more people are starting to make these choices!
