Bro. I found your channel trying to learn to maintain my first diesel truck. In Dec of 2023, I bought a 2022 Cummins, its first major service was coming up, and the dealer ship was too lazy/greedy to take care of it. Great video, my first time changing it myself on a 2021 RAM 2500. Thank you for taking the time to help us out. I do need to find some better ways to keep the diesel from spilling. I don’t like the mess it creates in my driveway. My only suggestion was on the rear filter replacement…push the new filter in place first (it will stay there) and then put the cap on and twist. It’s much harder to put both in at the same time as the filter needs to sit in there properly. Worked great for me 😎
Awesome happy to be able to help out. And yes you’re correct on the filter I guess it a what worked best for you. Some reason I’ve tried that couldn’t get the thing to thread to save my life
I just bought a 2022 6.7 megacab. This is my second 2500 6.7, and I paid to have them done everytime before. Almost $400 everytime. I plan on doing my own this weekend thanks to your video. I think I’m going to try and get some clear flexible tube to attach to the rear petcock to help with draining it around the drive shaft.
Liked and subscribed just because you put the tool list in the description so I could see what size I need right away 😂😂 That’s all I needed to know. Thanks 🙏🏼
You have no idea how much this helped me. I couldn’t tell from the video what you were doing with the upper filter as well as I could the lower filter. I took my new 2021 ram 2500 to the dealership in which I purchased a $6200 service/extended warranty on it yet when I brought it in for my first service at 7500 miles they wanted to charge me $420 plus tax I assume just to change the fuel filter. I am mediately pitched a fit and had them cancel the service policy where they were going to maintain my truck for seven years or 84 months. They knowingly miss lead or said they forgot to tell me that the fuel filter wasn’t covered so it would’ve been 420+ tax every service in addition to the $6200 plan that I had purchased and I thought that was crappy of them to do with me that way. Thanks for the video and the tips
Ya I’m sure they “forgot” to mention that to you. It’s definitely way over priced for them to do a 15 min service with $160 ish in filters Happy you found the video to benefit you. It’s an easy process do it with your oil change each time you’ll be good to go, I do recommend only to buy oem filters. Online or something dealer wants to much for them. No aftermarket filter comes close to the quality of the mopar filters
I used a 5/8” hose on front filter to easily direct fuel to spill into catch can. You will see the opening from underneath, above front axle if you have a 4X4. You can also use a big funnel for rear filter to direct spilled diesel into a container.
I stopped by my dealer yesterday to see what they would charge for a fuel filter and oil change. They quoted me $450 for the filter change and $200 for the oil change. Total ripoff! I'll be doing all this work myself. Thanks for the informative video!
@@kay_sanchez you don’t “have to” however they typically need changed around the same time. By the time my oil gets to 10-15% my fuel filters will be maybe 30% If I’m already under the truck I’ll just change the filters too.
Wow that worked like a charm. Fix it in about 2 mins. What kills menus that the truck was at the dealership because the electronic transfer case wouldn’t come out of neutral…they fixed that but didn’t address the gear shifter.
My 2019 Ram 2500 is my first diesel and I had no idea how to change these or where they were at. Thanks for the video, your video helped me get mine changed.
Very helpful video. I have a 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins, same config. under the hood as your 3500. It's a great truck, I might add. I'll be changing my fuel filters out myself for now on. The dealer wants $650.00 to change out. They explained to me that it is very hazardous work,,and should be left to pros. only, haha!! That's why the price is what it is.. Thanks for posting!
hmm....who would've thought that would be that easy. m dealership charged me, no kidding, $611 to do that work. with your video i think I'm going to save a LOT of money.
Thanks for this. Just finished changing mine. I'm old and initially planned to have a local shop do this. They wanted $974.00 to replace the 2 filters. I was, at one time, their best customer, according to the owner. No more.
That was perfect …thank you sir. I have a 5500. It took me 30 min lol. Loving it I was quoted with oil change from dealer. $750.00. Lol ..these filters only cost me $171.00. Lol all the way to the bank baby. Thanks again.
thanks man - so easy to do this. I didn't use a hose, just a clean glass jar right under the port. after loosening the canister cap I drained couple more times before removing rear filter cap. first time maybe 90 min with set up and clean up, watching video etc
@@mattd8411 I’ve gone to mopar websites And a few buddy’s have gotten filters from docs diesel too, they’ve been great. And keeps away from fake “mopar” filters from eBay and Amazon which I’ve been seeing quite a bit
good video, I was wondering about the priming, I have an old 98 cummins and I have to fill up the water separator to not loose prime, these new ram filter systems look like they are not as sensitive as the older ones.
Ram makes a good oil filter and bad oil filters .the best oil filter is an lf16035 stratapore oil filter for Cummins. Fleetguard is a subsidiary of Cummins. I have used this oil filter on 1989 12 valve, 2003 24 valve and my 2021 6.7 24 valve with no problem. Here in Santa Rosa CA they cost 20 dollars but it is the best oil filter. 😊
Started to buy the CAT oil filters for all the trucks it’s convenient and they don’t cost to much and a much better filter far as I know over mopar and fleet guards filters
My husband and I just bought a 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel. We are at the point where it is time for us to take it in for an oil change, and what people are quoting us for the 2 filter changes is ridiculous! Some people even state that they are charging us for 2 men for labor. Your video was very informative and so worth the watch and education. Question: Will the filter part numbers you supplied in your video description also work for our Diesel?
Happy you found the video! To answer you question, yes your truck will Use the same part numbers. Big time it’s an over charge from the dealer to be changing these filters. To easy not to do it yourself
Thanks for the video. Just about to change mine on my 22 ram 3500. First time diesel owner and not used to changing fuel filters for appreciate the bid. God bless! D God
If you will crack that drain again. As soon as you see a drop of diesel come out around the housing. That will drain the rest of the fuel. It will not drain it all the first round. As it catch get a breath of air. That will let it finish. Also a drain hose on the drain nipple keeps the fuel from making a mess also.
I shove a clear hose in the housing of the rear fuel filter and drain what I can before removing the housing cover.. Makes it somewhat cleaner so ya don't have diesel fuel splashing all over the drive shaft
Good video. Im glad they updates the rear filter from the 2016 models, but there’s still got to be a better way to design a drain in that rear housing. And the front filter is a pain and I always feel like I’m going to round off that top cover. Engineers never sit down with mechanics!
Good video, first time change for me. My last Ram only had one filter and it wasn't plastic like these. I broke the valve 8mm nut off trying to get it to open and drain. Had about 3/8 of a turn so it was a slow drip. Ordered extra online. No on within 2 hours of Charlotte NC had the valve. Went to Gastonia Dodge they had the whole cap with the valve in it, $79.85. So, with the spare cap and the soon to arrive bleeder valves I should be okay. As soon as I saw the first video and how the whole canister flexed and twisted, and the effort put in to make it turn, I figured the I'd be replacing the whole thing. Wonder why Fiat went with plastic??!! Love the truck but that is NFG! Good luck to the rest of y'all......
Had a 16 that i did fuel filters on … picked up a 22 last year, glad to see not much difference …. Dealer wanted 700$ for a oil/fuel filter change … had them do the oil change for 150$ … do the fuel myself for 80$ in parts.
I subscribed for your equipment videos and hauling but knew I'd be watching this video as soon as I reached 7500 miles on my 2020 ram3500. Well 9500 and I finally have a day "off" so it's maintenance time. Thank you
Great video.. Just a note, get some dielectric grease and coat your O-rings, they will go in smooth and you will get a better "feel" for the torque.. The fuel makes the O-rings make that awful noise and cause them to shudder as you tighten, the grease will stop that... Also if you unplug any electrical plugs, put some of that grease in there too, it will prevent them from corroding and make them easier to unplug as well.. Nice truck BTW....
I think dielectric grease will give you problems in your electrical components, it acts as an insulator, not a conductor. You could restrict the current if you're putting it in your plugs.
@@gregcoughlin4615 No Sir, Used it on electrical components to protect them from salt water in the Navy for 20 years. It lubricates the connection and also prevents corrosion. There is a reason the Navy ships have lasted since WW1
Ha, I almost didn't give you a like thumbs up but when you me ntioned at the end to check for diesel leaks I knew you were good on what you are doing. Great refresher video for me....thanks...
front oil filter you can buy a screw in t handle for the filter unscrew it let it drop down a little and use the other hand to thread it on pull it out the fender insert hole same with putting it back on fill filter with fresh oil screw on the t handle insert it inside remove t handle and screw filter back on not one drop of oil spilled
You never said what you used the tube for as well as I didn't see you use the tube for anything in the video ! I have a 2022 2500 and I am getting ready to do my first oil change so I am trying to learn the process as I have have always owned gasoline trucks and done my own oil changes and tune-ups so the whole Cummins diesel engine is all new to me !
Ya you’re right lol, my tube was the wrong size so just made the mess. Not to big of a deal to wipe it all down lol. Welcome to the diesel world my man! Treat her right hope she does the same for you
I wish I would've watched this before I got the text that my truck was ready and my total for oil change and filters was over $700. Live and learn I guess.
Thanks. I use to drive a tractor trailer (Cat, Cummins, & Mack Thermodyne motors) and I did all my oil & filter changes. This is my first Dodge Ram Cummins (I'm older now) and when they told me how much it was to change the oil & fuel filters, I immediately thought it must be a lot more difficult than when I was younger. Well, your video cleared that up for me. They want $229.95 to change the fuel filters $184.95 for oil & filter change! WTH? I can do all of this for a lot less! Thanks for confirming! Good video!
Great detail, but you skipped over one thing that I'm hoping to learn. When I did this last, the front filter was on very tight, and was so hard for me to break loose. I couldn't use an extension because of the other components directly above the filter. How did you get an extension on there? What length and any angled/swivel adapters?
So the first time around those are hard to break loose. Least mine was a bit too. I changed out my front filter cap to an aluminum one genos has it. Made it much easier to loosen and tread back on. I have learned a stubby socket with no extension also works with a 1/2 ratchet.
Changed mine yesterday. Wasn’t difficult to do, but after priming the fuel filters 4x as recommended, the truck started then stalled after 5 seconds. Repeated this process three more times with the same result. Have no idea what the problem is, but I’m fucked if I can’t get it started tomorrow for work.
Did you buy oem filters? I’ve heard some people getting fake oem filters having this issue I would check your rear filter housing first then go back to the front. Long as you hear your pump working. Slight chance of a bad filter,
Thanks! I used to always service mine. I just bought my 2022 RAM 3500 Limited HO, replacing my 2012. I am 70 now, so have to have it serviced now… but I do like to know what I am in for… LOL. My ‘12 RAM only had the fuel filter under the hood. Thanks! John, Greenville, OH
Very nice upgrade! Heck being at 70, nice new truck, kick back let them young folk maintain your rig! You just go out and enjoy it, of course after double checking their work cause I have trust issues hahaha
Thanks for posting. How many miles do you have on your 2020? The 2020 has proven to be a good year. I ended up trading my 22 Cummins. Now I’m in a Duramax. It’s a good platform. But nothing beats the Cummins torque and exhaust brake.
I do have a question for you. I was reading that when tightening, you should use a torque wrench and stop at 25lbs. I notice you didn't. can you give some info on this? I just swapped mine out today and tightened until the cup stopped turning. I didn't force it further, just stopped. so, thoughts?
I know it’s 30.5 NM to torque it down. You can do either or, if you’re scared to over tighten or if you think you won’t make it tight enough yes I definitely recommend using a torque wrench, I forgot to give any details in the video about that.
My friend has a Duramax with 500k miles and all he has done is an oil cooler and normal wear parts, filters etc. I expect my cummins to do as good if not better with normal preventative maintenance.
I change oil (and oil filter) every 5K miles and 15K on the fuel filters. The secondary filter (under the hood) is always clean. What are your thoughts on only changing the secondary filter at 30K ? I'm on my 4th diesel pickup and have always changed the oil at 5K and fuel filters when suggested by Dodge (Ram). Still have my 2004 2500 and 2019 2500. I'm 74 and have never had anyone else service my vehicles. Saved a wheelbarrow full of $ by doing my own. TT
So in my experience and opinion, you’re changing your oil way to soon and it’s probably not necessary. Don’t get me wrong if anything you’re not hurting anything but I’ve sent in an oil sample on a few rigs before at 10k change and they are well with in limits of the oils structure and lubricity. The fuel filters i get it, I changed them out just not to long ago, rear filter was quite dirty no doubt and the front as usual was still clean in my eyes. I feel it probably wouldn’t harm changing the secondary filter every other change but going 30k I’m not so sure. I will in good time change out the rest Filter with an adapter system for cat filters to have first and secondary filters under the bed even with that. If I remember right they recommended to change the front filter every other fuel filter change. And man no doubt on saving a load of money doing your own maintenance. And me personally I’ve always enjoyed this stuff.
Great Video - Where does in O-ring go in the on-engine filter housing? From the video it looked like you pushed it to the bottom of the housing. Thanks!
I appreciate it, and yes what you saw or think is correct. The o-ring goes on the housing itself, took it off the same way I did for the rear filter housing
@@IManOPERATOR honestly was just going to pay then I looked at warranty and diy oil change or fuel filters doesn’t void unless I f**k it up. So easy money 💰
Unrelated but related question. I just bought a 2020 with 31k. Drove it approximately 1000 to 1200 miles since I owned it (only been 3 weeks) and I have already gone thru 1/2 tank of DEF. I'm also only getting 18mpg at 73mpg. (373 gears). Is that normal? (Which is why I'm watching this video I'm wondering if the fuel filters/air filters are dirty)
You’re just fine with the truck. Seems completely typical def usage and fuel mileage you’re doing better than myself. If you tow you do use more def. If you’re really wondering on your filters there’s no harm in getting your rear filter swapped out. You could just open and look at it however don’t let the o ring split if you don’t have a spare one.
Thanks for the video! Is that a Tradesman? Its time to change my filters too. System is saying they are at 40%. I changed the oil a couple days ago and want to keep the intervals the same.
@@IManOPERATOR I think I would be able to do on my own, but why would I even try to brainstorm it if there is a video like yours, so again, thank you. Btw, I drive semi, roll off oversized, I know the pain...
I did the dealer on the first, paid the toll and didn’t smell diesel when I picked it up … think they changed them or did I just get a 400$ reset on the dash ?
There’s no way they did something like that unless you went to a chop shop. If you’re really second guessing it you can take the filters back out and see if Theyer dirty or not
Just had my 2021 done after 2 oil changes at the dealer. When I bought it I had 12 oil changes free. After the first oil change they told me it was recommended I get the fuel filters changed every other oil change, which dealing with larger equipment diesels, seemed sensible. What seemed strange however, was the fact it was not covered under the service maintenance agreement that was purchased at time of purchase.(12 oil changes). So imagine my shock when going to pick the vehicle up, and them telling me the balance was $385, I almost shit myself. I could not imagine what the hell cost that much. They charged $160 for the filters, and $160 Labor, the rest is that good old tax. As I said, I even gave the dealers general manager particular hell for it. Still shaking my head. I change the oil in a 60 series GM, 2 fuel filters, 1 large racor filter, and 2 large oil filters, plus 36 liters of Rotella, does not add up to that amount. I will definitely be changing them myself from now on. I see on Amazon where I can get the filters for around $90 taxes in. I am sure the first time may take an hour, but I expect after that should not be anymore than a half hour.
Ya I can’t understand the cost for such a quick and easy and well known service. It’s on the extortion side of things if you ask me. Definitely odd to to he buying a maintenance plan and then something that is a typical service item not be covered on it. But at least you see how simple and strait forward it is. Take care of it on your own time save a few bucks and keep on trucking
@@IManOPERATOR This all happened yesterday. After receiving a dealer survey in Email, and giving a very bad review, I received a phone call from the dealership, saying I was overcharged, and to drop in to get my $180 refund. She went on to tell me the code they used for the labor was the wrong one, which I highly doubt. The labor alone that was charged, with the tax, would not come to the $180 refund, so I am guessing the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
@@mitchp350 Maybe they actually made a mistake. Somewhere somehow. But on the flip side you wonder how many “mistakes” have been made to others that never spoke up and got screwed out of their service cost
@@IManOPERATOR No doubt there are many that just pay the bill without so much as a thought. I however could not for the life of me figure how it could be that much. I did notice that there was 1.5 hours labor, that was charged in the replacement of the fuel filters. Which to me did not seem reasonable, as I am sure I could do it in 30 mins, the first time. But being technicians that do this almost everyday, I would think they could cut that to 15 mins, if they got their finger out. The general manager(friend) did text me afterwards, and asked if I felt better about the outcome, of course I do think he had a lot more to do with the outcome than is being said.

It’s definitely way over priced for them to do a 15 min service with $160 ish in filters
Happy you found the video to benefit you. It’s an easy process do it with your oil change each time you’ll be good to go, I do recommend only to buy oem filters. Online or something dealer wants to much for them. No aftermarket filter comes close to the quality of the mopar filters
I feel your pain...did same thing to me .....never again
@@IManOPERATOR I found Doc filters are just as comparable. They have done great on my ram 3500
@@volkodavwolfcrusherlv7133 awesome, ya been hearing a lot of good things about those
@@IManOPERATOR yes, they are great, I have used on multiple trucks and pay around $100 for both filters delivered. Dealership is a total rip off!!
I used a 5/8” hose on front filter to easily direct fuel to spill into catch can. You will see the opening from underneath, above front axle if you have a 4X4. You can also use a big funnel for rear filter to direct spilled diesel into a container.
Honestly after the truck sits for a bit I’ve never had the front filter spill anything when changing it. Tube is a life saver
I stopped by my dealer yesterday to see what they would charge for a fuel filter and oil change. They quoted me $450 for the filter change and $200 for the oil change. Total ripoff! I'll be doing all this work myself. Thanks for the informative video!
Ya!! They charge like crazy, definitely not a fun price.

@@IManOPERATORdo the fuel filters and oil need to be changed at same time?
@@kay_sanchez you don’t “have to” however they typically need changed around the same time. By the time my oil gets to 10-15% my fuel filters will be maybe 30%
If I’m already under the truck I’ll just change the filters too.

Awesome. No problem 👌🏼
Ya it’s quite outrageous what they charge for a 15 min job.

Thanks for this. Just finished changing mine. I'm old and initially planned to have a local shop do this. They wanted $974.00 to replace the 2 filters. I was, at one time, their best customer, according to the owner. No more.

Super well done dude. Dealership will charge you $700 for oil and fuel filter change. Easy peasy once you know.
🤘🏼🤘🏼 save that hard earned money!
good video, I was wondering about the priming, I have an old 98 cummins and I have to fill up the water separator to not loose prime, these new ram filter systems look like they are not as sensitive as the older ones.
You got it, these new trucks are pretty advanced, the old ones were more of a bear.
Not sure why I’m just seeing your comment lol
My husband and I just bought a 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel. We are at the point where it is time for us to take it in for an oil change, and what people are quoting us for the 2 filter changes is ridiculous! Some people even state that they are charging us for 2 men for labor. Your video was very informative and so worth the watch and education.
Question: Will the filter part numbers you supplied in your video description also work for our Diesel?
Happy you found the video!
To answer you question, yes your truck will
Use the same part numbers.
Big time it’s an over charge from the dealer to be changing these filters. To easy not to do it yourself
Thanks for the video.

Awesome and welcome to the party, happy you found the video to help!
Just watched you video. Couldn't believe how clean your filters were when you pulled them.
Good fuel make a difference!
Yes! That’s what I do now. Finally have a drain tube that works on that valve now also. The tube I had for this video sadly was to small.
I shove a clear hose in the housing of the rear fuel filter and drain what I can before removing the housing cover.. Makes it somewhat cleaner so ya don't have diesel fuel splashing all over the drive shaft
Ya I know 😂 dam hose I had was to small so I just said screw it
@@IManOPERATOR 👍
Nice to see that I don't have to drain the diesel from the front filter. Heading out to change mine out here this afternoon at 15K miles.

Good video. Im glad they updates the rear filter from the 2016 models, but there’s still got to be a better way to design a drain in that rear housing. And the front filter is a pain and I always feel like I’m going to round off that top cover. Engineers never sit down with mechanics!
I hear you there! I’ll be getting the cat filter housing and replacing this here sooner or later

Oh man that sucks. Got to love plastic. Happy you found someone that had it. Expensive fix but you’re back on the road at least
Had a 16 that i did fuel filters on … picked up a 22 last year, glad to see not much difference …. Dealer wanted 700$ for a oil/fuel filter change … had them do the oil change for 150$ … do the fuel myself for 80$ in parts.
Nice! And ya super simple service that costs way to much

I subscribed for your equipment videos and hauling but knew I'd be watching this video as soon as I reached 7500 miles on my 2020 ram3500. Well 9500 and I finally have a day "off" so it's maintenance time. Thank you
Welcome aboard! and thank you!
Definitely I appreciate that information I never really thought about that. Appreciate it
Can you use silicone lube?
White lithium grease works too.

Your video was exactly what I was looking for.
Awesome! Appreciate the feed back. Happy it was easy for you!

Nice! Ya just keep up with what they need they should do you well, simple things here and there make life easy
I will in good time change out the rest
Filter with an adapter system for cat filters to have first and secondary filters under the bed even with that.
I am assuming there is another drain valve on the front filter that needs to be opened before rmoving the cap?
There is but I never use it
The drain on the front filter is to drain water out of the housing.

What’s the torque spec for those caps ? Or is it needed 🤷♂️
Awesome! No spec as far as I know, just when the cap stops it’s bottoms out and that’s it
Just had my 2021 done after 2 oil changes at the dealer.
@@IManOPERATOR
This all happened yesterday.
@@IManOPERATOR
No doubt there are many that just pay the bill without so much as a thought.
@@mitchp350 I couldn’t agree more, and ya having a buddy will make things happen much quicker for any kind of response to an issue

Try placing the filter in first then the cap, make sure you’re parallel with the filter top to the truck other wise it will not go in. Re watch. The video I show the top part of the filter
On the rear fuel filter you forgot to mention to put the top on first then tighten the 8mm socket when putting it back on to prevent pressure
