I like realistic firearms in games that use historic/real firearms, but unless there's canon saying boltguns have to be closed-bolt systems exactly the same as modern Earth firearms it doesn't bother me like it would in say Hunt Showdown with a semi-auto. The thing could just as easily be open-bolt with safety that drops the magazine slightly and releases the slide for holstering/reloading.
as a note, the bolt guns that unmodified humans use is .50 cal, rather than .75, as the recoil from the .75 astartes boltguns would break arm bones and dislocate shoulders.
It’s still a .75 cal because all bolt weapons use the .75 cal round aka bolt, because just like how in real life we have multiple versions of .50 cal such as the .50 BMG there is the magnum round .50 AE so this is just a small variant of .75 cal which is used in the space marines bolt pistols
@@trystantorres1172 This is something that has been massively in debate in the lore for a long time, the vast majority agree that mortal sized bolters utilize .50 caliber bolts, Which is backed up by the fact that unarmored mortals can fire a .50 caliber bolter with heavy recoil (even in DT, the recoil is reminiscent of firing .50 beowulf) where as the astartes .75 caliber would be like trying to shoulder and fire a 20mm bolt action rifle. Youd get put on your ass, and the only difference between the construction design between mortal and astartes bolter is size. There isnt some magical buffertube hidden in the smaller mortal one that lets it fire .75 as though it were a smaller caliber, no reciprocating barrel, nada. The idea that a human can take a 20mm anti tank rifle cartridge and put it in a smaller, lighter chassis and suddenly have it do 80% less recoil is stupid and wrong. Mortals have smaller caliber bolts than the astartes. Easy proof of this is in the Only War table top, the Boltgun that you have access to as a guardsman deals 1d10+5 damage with a penetration of 4 where as in the deathwatch rulebook, the astartes boltgun is 2d10+5 with a penetration of 5. If that isnt a clear cut case of smaller caliber (especially considering that bolts are rocket propelled, muzzle velocity doesnt matter with bolters.) take that information and do as you wish with it, Understand and change or reject and ignore. I dont care.
First the round isn't redbull can sized it is .75 caliber or 3/4 of an inch the redbull sized can part is the muzzle break not the barrel But don't worry It is even worse for your enemy and better for you, In canon the rocket motor in the bolt round is similar to a scramjet(they use term pulse motor), accelerating the round to 1000+ m/s or about mach 3. If you take into account the mass of the round which other people have done some theoretical estimations based on real world munitions current and past it is estimated the projectile has a mass of 91-100 grams or somewhere between 1/5 and 1/4 of a pound. It would impact with an energy of over 45000 joules, by comparison .50bmg has a muzzle energy of 17000 joules. Then the round explodes...

they could have made a "turning a safety off" like on lasrifles (althou its more of powering on thing?) or slower pull out speed instead of constant bolt racking animations on weapons that fire from closed bolt. Or at the very least releasing the bolt from boltstops. Also racking the pump/bolt on each reload when the bullet is still in the chamber ticks me off somewhat.
Suffice to say a bolter might not work like a conventional weapon, considering it launches exploding shells and such. It's clearly there for balance because the Bolter is a _fucking tool_ but I don't mind being punished for switching to it in close combat, it keeps it risky unless it's already equipped and ready to go.
By sound quality alone the Bolter in darktide sounds very close to the ones used in Dawn of War 1-2 and Retribution, with excellent animations to give you the proper feel of firing such a powerful and iconic weapon outside of the hands of the Adeptus Astartes, who are not only trained to master this marvel of a weapon but also have wargear to enable it to optimally fire in a stream of hot, explosive lead with little cost to accuracy thanks to their armors support systems that reduces recoil from heavy ballistic weapons. Space Marine might have one of the most satisfying feels when it comes to the Bolter, but that is in the perspective of being a Space Marine... I would dare to say that in Darktide, Fatshark perfectly captures the sound and feel of this iconic weapon in the hands of the common men, that thundering oomph with the cumbersome recoil just screams you need to control fire to fully man this monster and I love it, it almost makes me want to either have Veteran as my second or first main just for the Bolter alone, I can just imagine how much fun it will potentially be if the Ogryn can get their meaty paws on a Heavy Bolter.
I loved the boltgun in Space Marine. I loved the boltgun in Dawn of War 2. But, man, oh Great, Grand, Most Holy God-Emperor of Mankind, He Who Sits On The Golden Throne Of Terra, this makes me happiest.
I know this is crackpot theorycrafting, but what if. We have chain weapons, we have bolt weapons, we have a playable class of considerably larger size. What if, very much later down the line, we got a Space Marine subclass?
I note the little things; the sound of the bolter the heaviness of the magazine; the little slide that slides up when you reload then comes down when you stick the magazine back in.

Cool, more interested in how the flamer works though. Wonder how ammo efficiency and damage breakpoints effect the usefulness of bolter and other ranged weapons.
I've found the flamer works more like a support weapon, it suppresses and staggers huge groups while allies clean them up. It's quite hard to use though as you need to iron sight to use as a continuous stream, otherwise you shoot a useless puff or flame that really just staggers a little. The animation to switch to a stream is also really long and you can be interrupted by melee attacks so if your team dont support you it's near impossible to even use.
@@etherialaardvark9780 I've used the flamer a bit and yeah it is great support. I don't find the left click puff useless since enemies seem to stagger more when introduced to flame than a continuous stream, maulers and rages can be stunlocked for free as well as enemies around them by spamming left click. That said the hit registration on the left click is kinda weird and sometimes they don't seem to get hit by the flame when they visually do. Also got the bolter which is straight up OP, it does everything the shotgun does but signifigantly better. Flamer might be good if the team already has lots of long range weapons but otherwise bolter is better pick.
@@pokemongo-py6yq Yeah, I basically gave up on the flamer. Like you say its okay having that stagger but it seems to randomly just go through things and the wind up is way too long on the stream attack to feel useful. Feels like for crowd control you're far better off with a cleaving melee weapon and shoving. I also unlocked the bolter and it basically just deletes elites to the point that having a stagger for them isn't an issue lol
Bangalore was basically an explosive filled pipe used to clear barbed wire fences. I was a combat engineer in the 90s, was taught on them, including the DIY versions of 2x angle iron filled with PE4 strapped together forming a square cross section.
Wonder if the bolter makes the lasgun obsolete. Obviously the ammo pool is somewhat more limited but the dps output seems to easily make it well worth taking. Hopefully hotshot lasguns are available at high levels as a worthwhile alternative.
I think lasguns have a much higher ammo efficiency and are more of an Allrounder than the bolter, for example if you play with randoms, you also have better horde clear with the lasgun, although I don't know how much AoE Damage the Bolter deals
There are untold billions of guardsmen, Empire as mighty as it was, much less the shell it is could never produce bolters and most importantly their ammo in required numbers to be Imperial guard standard issue.
What they really nailed, and what makes a Bolt Gun distinguishable from other sci-fi guns, is how incredibly WIDE that frame is. It eclipses the hand grip, and takes up a noticeably larger chunk of the POV. We’re not even talking about the weapons team version, the baseline. Other media doesn’t account that, sometimes even the GW models. But I will be fair, a lot of times bolters are being held by Astartes, who even without wearing armor outsize every Guard. Hence a bigger grip. Also, I’ve learned that my phone auto-corrects “bolter” to Boalter and booger.
omg, finally a proper W40K game, i just hope this sells well so they update it and make it bigger and bigger, it has so much potencial even if they added PvP etc. The marketing for this game was nonexistent tho, so i just hope it catches on and be profitable so they wont drop it
For those that don't know their have been bolt guns that normal humans can use for a long time in 40k lore. They are typically given to veteran sargents and the body guards of Imperial Gaurd Officers. They are also used by the Sisters of Battle. The difference is they are smaller caliber than the Astartes bolt guns, and typically are semi-auto ONLY.
Space marine bolt rounds and the ones used by standard humans are the same size, the gun itself is just scaled down cause space marine models need to be bigger for ergonomics. both models fire .75 cal. rounds, for comparison a 12 gauge slug is 0.79 cal/ 20mm. A bolter is basically an full auto AA12 with Explosive rounds. a normal human with porper training should be able to handle the recoil. only reason i can see for a normal human hurting themselves from firing a space marine bolter. would be that they can't propely hold the upscaled weapon, thus can't handle the recoil. plus the spacemarine version is probaly heavyer just in the fact its bigger. Space marines can handle the recoil better due to their strength and power armor. which would make them far more accurate at range.
I feel like the needless rack slide was purposefully designed to give pistols a quickswap advantage but it's weird. I'd rather they had created a true "dual wield" mode for melee + pistol if you had that combo of weapons.
Did your PC struggle during the beta? Mine isn't the best and I got a solid 60-120 FPS at all times, though I did notice changing between setting presets had basically no impact.
That’s a human scaled version, it’s not the true Space Marine size. That’s why the sisters of battle use the same type, even with their own power armor.
They really should make a mechanic where if you've racked the weapon already you don't need to rack it again until you empty it fully then reload. It does annoy me when switching to a weapon you've already cocked cocks it again.
It's intentional design to remind people this is not a shooter game, you can pull out melee weapon in split second and it has no animations, same for CQC weapons like shotgun, when in melee you are expected to use melee.
A Bangalor torpedo is not a stick, but a tube filled with plastic explosive. Any number of tube segments can be attached to each other to breach obstetrical such as fencing, and minor obstructions. At one end of the torpedo is a port to accept detonator caps to set the charges off. See the breaching of the barbed wire in the movie the Longest Day for the best example/use.
Chunky design, heavy sound, strong kick but MOST IMPORTANTLY NO CLIMB, makes things explode. I think this is our first lore accurate bolt gun after Firewarrior.
lore wise theres reason not to, ogryns are too stupid for concepts like "conservation of ammo" and "accurate fire" hence why their primary armaments are the ripper shotgun and grenadier gauntlet. bolt gun ammo is fairly labor and time intensive to produce which is why guardsmen use lasguns primarily, and giving a bolter to a 600 pound wall of muscle with the intelligence of a 7 year old isn't exactly the best allocation of resources. why do that when you could give them a heavy stubber instead? (which is in the game apparantly!)
Honestly the best feeling boltguns for me where in Necromunda Hired Gun and Fire Warrior but this looks really good. Nice to see a good one in a good game.
The animations look great and weighty but the devs could do with having someone that knows firearms opperation looking over things. The character shouldnt be pulling the charginng handle every time he brings the weapon out or he would just be wasting ammo every time he did it past the 1st. The shotgun has a similar issue with the character charging the weapon when a round is already chambered.
the reload feels good. the sound is meaty. the fact 1/2 of the victim's body flies into ceiling and all its blood drained clean. imagine csm enters game.

Finally, bolter is BOLTER and not just another glorified assault rifle 👺
as a note, the bolt guns that unmodified humans use is .50 cal, rather than .75, as the recoil from the .75 astartes boltguns would break arm bones and dislocate shoulders.
If that isnt a clear cut case of smaller caliber (especially considering that bolts are rocket propelled, muzzle velocity doesnt matter with bolters.)
take that information and do as you wish with it, Understand and change or reject and ignore. I dont care.

Nearly as unhealthy as the energy drink.
First the round isn't redbull can sized it is .75 caliber or 3/4 of an inch the redbull sized can part is the muzzle break not the barrel
But don't worry It is even worse for your enemy and better for you, In canon the rocket motor in the bolt round is similar to a scramjet(they use term pulse motor), accelerating the round to 1000+ m/s or about mach 3.

For what I've seen, this Bolter wonderfully conveys the power and destruction when used in the arms of a man. Space Marine gave it a wonderful feel for its brutality in the arms of humanity's super soldiers, but this feels amazing in the hands of just some guy
I would not be surprised if the Veteran in the game would be having gleeful smile the first time he uses that heavy thing.

@@artemisp2819 it's super slow to equip, super slow reload, and low ammo. When things get crazy I find myself only using melee when I have this thing cause it doesn't do well in those prolonged intense situations
they could have made a "turning a safety off" like on lasrifles (althou its more of powering on thing?) or slower pull out speed instead of constant bolt racking animations on weapons that fire from closed bolt.
This boltgun is amazing, I'm hoping they add a bolt pistol as well
I'm so excited to crush heretics with this weapon! Can't wait till tomorrow!

Cool, more interested in how the flamer works though. Wonder how ammo efficiency and damage breakpoints effect the usefulness of bolter and other ranged weapons.
The bolter is very much an elite killer, using it on generic grunts is a waste of ammo, that being said, bolter goes brrrrrr

This video sold the game to me. Gotta love punchy Boltguns.
The ultramarines movie perfected the sound of the bolter and the Thunder Hammer in my opinion.
As long as they give the stat bars and icons more info when hovering over them or something, I'm a happy Ogryn.
I am sooo happy to see they fixed the chain weapons, so awesome

That’s a human scaled version, it’s not the true Space Marine size.
That’s why the sisters of battle use the same type, even with their own power armor.
And it's still very impressive, even if it's not the superhuman version.
What a treat to see a literal geyser of gore fly out of someone after catching a bolt shell

Chunky design, heavy sound, strong kick but MOST IMPORTANTLY NO CLIMB, makes things explode. I think this is our first lore accurate bolt gun after Firewarrior.
I imagine the Ogryn will have access to an even bigger bolter down the line
lore wise theres reason not to, ogryns are too stupid for concepts like "conservation of ammo" and "accurate fire" hence why their primary armaments are the ripper shotgun and grenadier gauntlet. bolt gun ammo is fairly labor and time intensive to produce which is why guardsmen use lasguns primarily, and giving a bolter to a 600 pound wall of muscle with the intelligence of a 7 year old isn't exactly the best allocation of resources. why do that when you could give them a heavy stubber instead?
