It's finally October…the best time of the year!! We make lots of props, decorations, and awesome stuff this time of year and our new skeleton gravecrawler halloween prop is the newest thing we've added to our DIY Halloween decor.
These Halloween props are definitely easy to make. You can absolutely follow along at home and make this with some basic materials. If you're looking for a fun weekend project to upgrade your Halloween decorations, this DIY project is perfect.

ALSO, I noticed you were using the spray foam in an enclosed room where your hot water heater was located. A HUGE NO NO! The fumes from the foam could ignite from the hot water heater's pilot light and Ka-Bluey! ALWAYS use proper ventilation and NEVER near a flame or heat source... KA-BLUEY!
Definitely good advice but there’s no water heater in our garage so no open flames. 😃

I think for gluing the dirt on the best thing would have been to water down a bunch of white PVA glue, brush it over the spray foam and then sprinkle the dirt over it.
My suggestion for the dirt to stick. Put 2/3 water with 1/3 white glue and a tiny bit of dishwater soap in a bottle that squirts drops at a time (contact lens solution bottle for instance). The solution is quickly absorbed and all becomes hard when dry. Works great for my train modeling landscape.

For reptile enclosures, you coat the spray foam in silicone after you’ve cut all the shiny parts off of the surface with a razor. Then you can attach the dirt to the silicone. Tedious, but it works really well.
I like to have a spray bottle of cold water, so as I heat the plastic and foam it. I spray it with the cold water to cool the plastic so it sets, speeds up wait time. Love your videos
New sub. When I heat bend, make sure to go all of the way around, not just one side. I usually use a lower heat setting, takes longer but for my tastes, prefer it to heating too quickly and getting burned or "melty"... LOL. Love you guys, love the carefree attitudes and the fact you guys can laugh at yourself, so refreshing versus the 150 edits you see in a lot of videos, keep it up

I really like it... my only suggestion is for it to separate for storage. I made a skeleton in a caldron but I used a rebar and zip ties. You’ve inspired me. Thanks.
Very cool. I think maybe yellowing/greening the skeleton with some dark yellow or off-white and sickly-green with a black wash would make it look a bit more authentic. Maybe some fake moss with something on it to make it look wet. Some tattered clothing aged and mouldered. Also maybe some green LED lights in the skull with a bit of silk handkerchief inside the eye holes to get it a dim green eyeglow would look really cool. Btw you folks should really use safety masks and gloves when dealing with all those chemicals and make sure you've got the garage door opened. That foam is some nasty stuff.

Nice job. You also could've used stain on the skeleton like you did the skulls with the candles on them. I'll definitely be using that little trick.

For mounting stuff like this, especially if I can't get a pilot hole through, I generally use plummer's strap. For making dirt stick, I mix it into a paste with elmer's glue all.

A suggestion from the model railroading hobby:
A mound of dirt like that would be better and less expensive if you used wadded up newspaper covered with plaster cloth (the stuff broken limb casts are made from( any hobby shop will have the woodland Scenics brand)
To hold the dirt spray it with water with a little detergent added. Then diluted white glue 2-3 parts water 1 part glue.
The wet water allows the glue to soak in instead of beading up on surface.
When it is dry the dirt will not be held in place like sand to sandpaper.

I know you all are seasoned vets at this but I highly recommend a shinto rasp be added to yup tool kit. it is an amazing shaping tool. I use mine for everything from bow making (archery) to drywall and foam, even spray foam
Suggested technique: Create foam structure, let fully cure, with a gloved hand and a fairly firm 2-3 inch paint brush cover the foam(in sections) with black silicone and sprinkle/cover wet silicone with "Eco Earth" from a bag (purchased at pet store) patting it down into silicone ... continue until fully covered, let cure over night or longer and shake off excess.
This is a technique used in making backgrounds in terrariums/reptile habitats. Works great!

Try using peat moss instead of dirt. I've used it for several props. When the holiday is over, all you have to do is rake it into the lawn. Great videos by the way. Love them.
Custom terrariums are made of great stuff foam then you cover the cured foam with a layer of clear silicon caulking (very messsy) and then covering the un-cured silicon with Coco Coir. Definitely check it out!
I did this heat gun technique when I made my dead curled up angel. works well but you have to be SUPER careful not to bend too fast and not to hold the heat gun too long.

If you roll out the epoxy putty into "ropes", it's easier to mix. Roll it out, bunch it up, roll it out, etc.

For my flower pots I use coffee grounds mixed with Elmer’s glue and it looks just like dirt, I am sure dirt would stay mixed with a wet glue that will dry with some time Elmer’s works well for small faux dirt pots and used coffee grounds smell good!

One great way to add "dirt" to your projects is to get a plastic bowl and mix up white glue, dirt and small stones (don't make the mixture too runny), then scoop it on your surface with an old spoon and spread around using a cheap paint brush. Once it dries you can then give it a second coat on the areas that need more.
One other tip would be to use pieces of styrofoam to build up the size of the "mound" you want to create first...THEN spray on your spray foam!! Hope these help for other projects.

For the next time a great way to get the dirt to stay is use the spray adhesive first and just pile on your dirt once your satisfied use a mixture of PVA glue ( or modpodge) and water in a spray bottle and wet all the dirt on top. This will hold it all in place, hope this helps keep up the badass decorations.

This is soo awesome! I just couldn't help but think if you'd corpsed the skeleton and maybe even put led lights into the foam like he was coming from hell that it woulda taken it to the next level. Thank you guys soo much for the great idea because you can make it your own. I love your holloween decorations!
Aves putty would have been a better choice. As for the dirt, maybe after the spray glue and the dirt is on, you cover it with a wash of a mixture of white glue and water. It should seep in and bond the dirt to the base. That's what the railroad model people use to keep their soil on their diorama's.

skip the primer and use black silicone caulking to coat foam and then add dirt to wet caulking pressing it in. its how terrarium builders do it.

I had a idea using a halloween skeleton a motor & actuators , a motion sensor and a wood box.
you dig a hole put the motor and actuator leading out of box hooked to the back of a skeleton ( with a grim reaper robe on top to his the mechanics) hide the sensor in front to pick up people walking by and thatll turn the mechanics on to raise and lower the skeleton ( and put some battery powerd Lights in the eyes to make it look like the eyes are glowing
the pose looks amazing. I might suggest some aging of the skeleton with a wash of dark brown spray paint and paper towels to give him a more real, less plastic appearance.

Never doubt the power of watered down Tacky Glue and a $0.50 paint brush for coating things like the dirt, glitter, and fake snow!
I think if you used paint to weather the skeleton and tombstone it would look way better and more realistic

Try the tried and true technique from model railroaders - cover the mound with dirt and the flood the dirt with white glue diluted with water and a drop of dish soap. Works magic.

I know this is an old video buuttt... if you haven't master doing dirt yet I wanted to suggest something I've learned from making custom backgrounds in terrariums. shave off the outer layer of the great stuff then paint it with ge #2 clear silicone and before that dries mash in cocoa fiber (dry it must be dry fiber) this makes it look like dirt. check out some of serpa designs videos or just search for custom frog enclosures. this technique works GREAT.

I know I’m very late but when she was describing the legs of the skeleton popping off like a jack in the box at the beginning of the video, it gave me an idea for them to do a jointed jack in the box decoration.
A liquid adhesive (wood glue, pva, mod podge, elmers, *etcetera) and damp dirt would stay a lot better maybe and then spray adhesive on the skeleton and add dirt to it to really sell that it crawled out are some ideas to play with for those trying this idea out.

A suggestion for anyone watching. If you create a mixture of PVA Glue (Elmer's Glue) and Water, then you could spray that onto the mound and immediately fill in with dirt (and then more than you think you'll need). PVA dries clear and is used all the time in tabletop terrain and miniature bases to achieve an adhesive that stays clear and doesn't change the color of the object it is on top of.

7:15 let the great stuff set up, sculpt it, then smear black silicone all over it then drop on your dirt. This is a frog enclosure technique.

In making a terrarium we use silicone and paint it over, then coat with coco fiber, I would think it would work here too.

a suggestion to finish the skeleton other than painting/staining is a mixture of wet toilet paper and Elmers school glue to give appearance of decaying flesh,easy to shape,when dry paint with flesh/green paint then a spray of clear acrylic, works great

The final base looked great. My only critique/pointer/tip would be that instead of spending LOTS of dollars on the spray foam to form the broken ground, use chicken wire w/ papier-mache' to sculpt the ground and hole. Once you have the desired feel of the broken ground then you can use the foam for the detail. Once dried, then spray paint the base black as your base color. Use a pump-action gardening sprayer w/ diluted white glue mix (50/50 water to white glue) to use to glue the real earth on the base. Then finish as you did. Lastly, for a rotting skeleton the just borrowed out of his coffin then thru 6 feet of damp earth he was rather bright and shiny. Dull him up w/ a stain, shoe polish, tea...
Note: use hot water w/ Dawn detergent to clean the sprayer IMMEDIATELY after using to get all the glue residue out of the spray mechanism, hose, and nozzle. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Terry! GREAT advice here! Great call on building a form for the spray foam ahead of time. In hindsight, had we had a bit more of a plan, that definitely would have saved us some $$$.

Heh heh, once you got to the dirt mound I don't think it qualifies as easy anymore. However, I do have a nice bush I could have it peaking out from under and that would basically eliminate the need to blend it with the ground if all you're really going to see is the head, arms and torso.
I think the wire arm mounts with the epoxy putty could've worked better if you had put a kink in the wire, that would add a little hook so there's more surface for the putty to grip.
