    The thing about PVC cement is this. It is a solvent and basically welds pvc together. It is not a 'glue'. When you use it, you have to make sure all of your fittings are correct and line up AS SOON AS THE PIECES TOUCH. I build props for films and Halloween effects as well and have used PVC for years. It is tricky, but the results are solid and permanent.
    The problem you had is pretty typical when rushing, but it happens to everyone who uses this a medium at some point in time. 😊❤👍

    I am talking with my brother about doing something like this and came up with a few extra ideas. So figured I'd pitch them here to maybe help you further your build. Maybe for the part 2 overly complicated version for veteran makers.
    Lights in the tube, but I'm also thinking uv lights at the top half. If the candy has glow in the dark on the wrapper extra points. Low lyeing fog through the tub as well so that it's pouring candy and fog ( you can get smell oils for fog to make them smell really good). And it would be cool to do a sound card arduino so that as the candy comes down it triggers the lights, and a sound effect. Also think attaching a GoPro to the tube or near it to timelapse all the costumes coming up. To get extra crazy a hopper and a way to despense a standard handful every time with a crank it push of a handle or whatever. My parents have a iron gate in their entryway and I'm thinking pushing the tube through the gate to further keep kids back plus it works as half the mounting system.
    We also 3d print so I think it would be cool to modify a skull model to specifically fit a pvc pipe like a end cap. Would also be cool to have a small table under it where kids should put their bag/bin for proper despensing.
    Anyways here's 5 mins of over complicated brainstorming.

  • @Xeir
    @Xeir 4 года назад +16

    With PVC plumbing, dryfit first Jay! Also, when you do put a black line (when it's all fit) with a sharpie, so when you get the glue on there you know EXACTLY where it needs to end up. :)

    This is a great idea! If you're making things out of PVC, I highly recommend investing in a PVC cutter. They cost less than $20 at big box hardware stores. It's so much easier than using a band saw and doesn't produce a bunch of plastic shavings. For projects that don't need to be water tight I sometimes drill a pilot hole through the pipe and coupling and then drive a screw in to hold it together. Then I can remove the screw and re-use the parts later on to make something else.

I've done quite a bit of PVC building and I too discovered PVC cement can be problematic, so now I fit the pieces together with a rubber mallet to be sure they're tight & then screw a self-tapping screw through each joint. It will be sturdy, but you can take it apart easily if needed & even re-use the pieces. Keep up the good work!

    Used your plans and made our own Loot Chute. Wish I could add pictures. It was a huge hit! The first little boy was around 2 and was in a stroller. His Mom walked up with his bag and caught the candy. He got up out of the stroller and walked right up to the skull and looked up inside it without touching anything. Then he put his hand out under the skull for a piece of candy. Of course we sent it down and he loved it. Biggest smile! Showed his Mom and his Grandmother and was so absolutely pleased with himself. My 11 and 12 year old had a blast handing out candy (they couldnt trick or treat because I am at high risk). Thank you so much for these plans!!! I did lengthen the pipe to 8ft, no biggie. I’m so Syked, and have already been getting my accessories for my circus theme this year.
    Bought clowns at Spirit Halloween last year on sale. I have the 6 foot winter dragon that is going on top
    of the house with fog machine. Light up balloons. Have all kinds of things to put out. We are building a ticket booth but it is going to be the candy booth . I have tickets with clowns on them I got. Someone will give each child a ticket and they give it to the person dressed up as a clown in the ticket/candy booth!!
    and they clown will give them a bag of charms fluffy stuff cotton candy! My neighbors are excited to see what I’m doing this year! I can’t wait!,

    The only thing is that you still have to touch the candy in order to put it down the tube. The way I see it most people won’t wat to sanitize every single piece of candy, let alone buy a huge bag for the two trick or treaters that actually show up

      What she is applying first is the purple primer, and it's fine to let that dry. When he was applying the actual glue he seemed to be doing it appropriately and joining the pieces quickly. It *does* set very fast though so you need to make sure things are aligned. I recommend a combination of the two... with all those small pieces in the base it's more likely to fall apart with no glue at all. Glue some parts for stability (a few at a time) but dry fit others so you can break it down for storage easily.

    • @GojiBaba
      @GojiBaba 4 года назад +2

      Also there is "fast set" pvc glue... make sure you're not using that.

      Surface contamination and airborne particles are two very different contamination vectors. They're saying surface contamination is less of a concern now, and 6' is still the recommended minimum distance for airborne particles (though 10' might be cool too). So... not so bad.
