I ask someone at GameStop if this game was any good, and their response was "it's terrible, I love it"
I actually had a similar response except the GS employee said it was garbage.
I got it for like 3$
I bought it day of release and the guy at Gamestop said, "Are you sure you want to buy this? It's not a survival horror game like you think." I told him "I know, that's exactly why I'm buying it."
That is the proper response

Fun fact: If you try to make Deadly Premonition's Sinner's Sandwich [white bread w/o crust, turkey breast, strawberry jam, breakfast cereal] at home, you'll find out that it is quite disgusting and actually won't atone for your past sins but instead add some new ones on.

XD
I think it actually depends. I can imagine something tasty being made from the sinners sandwich. Strawberry jam, cornflakes, and using turkey but the turkey has to be seasoned itself I've heard of much more bizarre things on a sandwich.
OP is wrong; sinners sandwich is kino
That really depends on how you prepare your turkey and what type of jam your jam is
It would probably be a great sandwich if you used smoked turkey, cranberry preserves or blackberry jam, and corn flakes for crunchy texture.
It's a masterpiece because despite the flaws, you understand the sheer exuberance and passion the dude has for his brand of weird. You're not just looking at a game here. You're seeing his honesty and what he's inspired by. He doesn't try to hide it. It's just honest and innocent.
The story is really amazing I think a remake be great
Except for the part where he swore up and down that he had never even heard of Twin Peaks...
@@PugsWellington Getting pressured by copyright goons does that to you.
The ending was so great man...I never felt this gut punched by a game or a movie this hard
It lifts so heavily from a single source, though. And does it improve on it at all? No. This game is an interesting curiosity and I can see why some love it but its not super original or even that well executed. Theres something super Japanese about taking an artist whose work is as dreamlike and surreal as David Lynch and doing such a direct copy of it rather than try to pay homage in its spirit of unbound creativity
I saw a review for this in a local newspaper, they roasted it saying it was "so bad it's good". Went to GameStop shortly after release in 2010 and bought it new $20 - once I beat it, it was unironically my favourite game of that generation. I still stanby that - it's janky as all hell, but it's heart and wacky, yet intriguing mystery is what makes it so special.
100% the same, the greatest feelings I had from that generation. Still extremely happy to listen to the soundtrack here or there, it's like remembering one of the best trips of your life, and it's with you forever.
It's a janky mess but it's one of the greatest experiences you can have in gaming.
I've just bought it for $3, I'll let you know how it goes. I've read reports that it can be very buggy at times but people still love its Twin Peaks-esque humor and presentation. If you've ever seen that show, you may as well fall in love with this, and vice versa.
Lmao I still remember picking this game up for the 360 at around launch.
The workers at GameStop acted so confused when I asked to the game. They all had absolutely no idea what it was or that they even had it.
From the moment I heard those squirrels make monkey noises in intro cutscene, I loved the game. Replaying it on the switch two years ago was even more fun.
@@favoritemustard3542 lol it would have been around that time for when the meme came out so its possible
theres a reply to this comment and i want to know what it is
Deadly Premonition is the hottest mess ever and yet it's delivered with such fervor that you can't help but enjoy the story and look back on it fondly.
Just like anybody who watched the original Twin Peak when it first aired lol
It reminds me of a quirky heavy rain. Would have been even better with a bigger budget and time. I love the story and it's plot point. Everything stayed consistent
The right narrator can make the worst tale interesting, and the right mediam turns chaos into art. I can imagine that heart can make a hot mess into a masterpiece, in its own way. :)
I absolutely adore it when York is discussing about movies with Zach. It's so wholesome, it really makes York a likeable protagonist. SWERY was 100% right on that decision I love it.
It shows that York is actually just a huge nerd
That was one of the few things I liked about this game, I even watched Ladyhawke because York sold it so well.
Every time we see Matt's face and it's not actually a skelly-man, I find myself surprised
I tend to imagine him as one of the Syndicate in Paradise Killer.
Hey I just wanted to say thanks for the shoutout! (I was wondering why I was getting new comments on my Rainy Woods video this morning!) I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🥰 I enjoyed your video as well, very thorough! I still hope we can see more of Rainy Woods someday.🙂
If Tommy Wiseau adapted the script for Twin Peaks, then a Japanese video game studio and director "polish" and "game-ify" it, you'd get Deadly Premonition.
I'm still surprised how captivated people were for it when it was out, yet again, it's the charm of it and that catchy whistle theme!
When I saw videos with clips from this game, I deadass thought it was just a meme to put the whistle theme into the game and was very surprised to find out that it seems to be... actuallly in the game?
DP is the perfect example of a cult classic and it's worth all of the praise that it gets.

The ONLY fault I have with this game is every single ghost enemy things death noise over and over for the whole game “I don’t want to die”. Everything else was a masterpiece 😂
Yeah, the actual gameplay needed polish.
The gameplay mechanics suck. But it is fun and unique.
And at twice the volume of everything else.
Deadly Premonition is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time.
Same!!
I remember the day I bought this. I was at Gamestop to look for random games in the hopes one would catcg my interest. And there it was, brand new, $19.99 on the shelf. It looked... bad. The screenshots on the back had a PS2 quality to them, and it looked like some exploration based survival horror. And it was then I knew, without a doubt, that game was going home with me that day. And I have had zero regrets since.
An example of The Room level production values and performances that actually comes across as entertaining in spite of itself.

Don’t forget sound track the whistle song and the jetset radio Wille chase song are another highlight.
Except Deadly Premonition's problems only come from gameplay.
The story is possibly one of the best ever done in any videogame. Comparing it to The Room is downright ignorance.

Francis York Morgan is ONE of the most interessting Video Game characters of the Past 20 years.
One of the biggest news outlets here in Sweden called Deadly Premonition "Twin Peaks The Game" and gave it the 'Game of the Year' title which of course made me buy it. After that I just couldn't put it down, it's without a doubt one of the most memorable games ever made, such a masterpiece in its own. Never judge a book by its cover.
The good thing about this game in particular seems to be that its fans understand that it is flawed as all fucking hell and that it's very obvious why many, if not a majority of players, might not like it.
Like, I never played it, but its hilariously farcical tone, bizarreness and all that stuff seems right up my alley, but I'd understand every person that said "Oh god jesus no"
But you judged it by its cover and were right, so indeed judge a book by it's cover
I will defend unironically calling this game a masterpiece with my dying breath.
Same here. Masterwork.
There are probably better things you can use your dying breath to do or say. But you do you!
As you should
@@largelump3613 🤷♂️
The cut scenes are awesome. The music is pretty good also.
I played the PC version of this game and boy let me tell you, it was hell. Besides the mystery in Greenvale, making this thing run on PC was another mystery. I had to uninstall several things, reinstall several other, launch the game from the .exe instead of Steam's launcher, switch several compatibility modes until I find the proper one to run. I even had to downgrade my audio drives because I kept hearing a non stop screeching while driving cars.
The game crashed, stopped loading, I lost progress several times and I felt rage running through my veins. But you know what? Now that I was able to finish that game, all those bugs and troubleshooting I had to go through actually added to the experience, and felt really sad once I saw those credits roll.
A friend of mine got it working but the aiming didn't quite function she had only the X axis. And she powered through, and got all the way to the end of the game... Where it's required you aim down to take out the boss's final weak point.
@@Joe90h Noooooooooooo, tell me you guys were able to figure it out! That ending and achievement proving that you were able to withstand such difficulties is a badge of honor at this point.

he wasn't lying, Tremors IS a masterpiece
The entire series is a masterpiece theater.
the first 2 are legitimately good. the 3rd one is super fun. the 4th and show was... tolerable. the Jamie Kennedy ones are the worst and i love them.
That “Arrested Development”/Tobias clip is incredibly apt for us in the DP fandom.
Literally a masterpiece and I have felt that way for over half a decade.
Holy crap this looks amazing. I love Twin Peaks. I need to play this now.
I think hello neighbor would be a good episode. Everything surrounding that game with how it tried to emulate fnaf was interesting.
Twin Peaks x The Room goes hard
(This reads like a joke but combining the vibes+setting of my favorite TV show ever with the goof in this game makes for an unmatched vibe I'll be chasing in games forever)
When these games get released I kind of want to know what happened to the Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Panzer Dragoon VR games. The best way I can describe it is "imagine if the last time you made an update about the game was nearly 2 years ago, talking about a release date that's already passed and there's a rumor that one of the people behind one of your projects is DEAD"
Swery genuinely seems like one of the nicest people in the games industry. I know I'll continue to play and enjoy each new project he releases!
I found Extermination PS2 in an abandoned moldy box inside a warehouse as part of a collection and that game always stood out to me, even though I was not enough of a gamer to deal with the limited ammo angle. Can't believe it's actually somehow connected to Deadly Premonition.
Man, this is so nostalgic. I remember the playthrough from all those years ago...
I rewatch the playthrough almost every year, it's like christmas :)
QUINTTTT
That was one of my favorite let's plays by them. I've been thinking about watching it again, but it would just make me sad
I remember watching a Let's Play of this game while I was working at a small mobile game studio doing insane OT for weeks. I was thankful someone else played it because I remember watching the car run out of gas and thinking that would've driven me crazy (ha). But when the climax of everything happened, I was just in awe. The story, to this day, is one of the most memorable I've ever seen.
Because this game I always whistle the “life is beautiful” song.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. It got me into Twin Peaks which is now one of my favorite shows of all time. I still can't believe this got a sequel!
I fucking love this game. It's terrible and great and memorable and incredibly confusing. You can just totally see someone poured all of their efforts into it and it was complete fascinating chaos.
I love how involved Swery is with the community too- I posted about the final boss on Twitter and he liked it :')
I got into Deadly Premonition thanks to the Giant Bomb (RIP?) dueling longplays. I followed them up to the art museum dungeon, bought the game myself, and finished it before either of them did.
Same - but I watched them play through the whole thing, then watched Twin Peaks and it all changed my life.
I LOVE THIS GAME i wish york was real
I think my favorite way to describe this game is "So bad it's perfect."
I loved this game so much and how frickin dark it is despite the goofy parts
Still one of my favorite games despite all the flaws..
I've seen this game described as a game made by aliens whose only exposure to humanity is Twin Peaks. I've been meaning to check it out ever since but never got around to it.
As someone who finished DP Origins last year. I loved it and it actually got me to watch twin peaks. despite the game’s cut corners and that ceiling crawler mini boss that shows up again and again and again.
These What Happened videos are so good.
A game that perfectly captures the qualities of a B-Movie
I didn't know I needed this more than anything else in the world until right now
One of the few games I've completed 100% twice and I'm still working on the third time. The music was so iconic, I literally got teary eyed, when one of its piece would start playing in the second.
You have been killing it this month matt! Nice!
DP is the only game I’ve watched a “Let’s Play”, and led me to watching everything Twin Peaks.
Deadly Premonition may play rough, but the characters and story make up for it more than enough.
Or, so says Mr. Stewart....
This is actually one of my favourite games. It's so bizarre, so beyond good or bad. Filled with charm, laughs, genuine scares and even a few tears. It's amazing. Swery 65 remains one of the few genuine visionaries in the industry today. I can't wait to see what he does next.
I feel like the absolute mess that was D4's development deserves its own video.
This game will forever be in my heart as a piece of nostalgia for me. A german gaming channel was playing though the entirety of it back then, and said lets play became somewhat of a time capsule for me to get back to the time when i was 23. Funny how the shitty PS1 look and the absolutely repetitive 4 or 5 different songs this entire soundtrack has to have actually helped hammer down this thing into my memory. When i start the whistle theme, all my friends still join in as a collective trauma response xD

Thanks for the video. Until now i've heard only a few about this game but this video really helps. Thanks.
Just leaving some much deserved love Matty, you really make one of the best series on this entire platform and you should be proud!
I think the thing that made me realize "Wait, this is a game I'd freaking love..." where the Giant Bomb features with Swery. Seeing what a earnest and likeable guy Swery was was the "Maybe the game isn't as whacky as people meme it to be.." and the game play was awkward but unique for the time. Life is beautiful still makes me smile and whistle along, as it should for everybody.
I think I was 15 when I bought this. I had just beat Alan Wake and loved it. I walked into GameStop and was browsing and picked up Deadly Premonition right when an employee walked up asking if I needed help finding anything. Asked him about DP and he clearly wasn’t sure what to say, eventually saying in a noncommittal voice “it’s… kinda like an open world Alan Wake” I said I’m sold and he definitely was thinking of stopping me when he saw how excited that idea made me.
Everything about that game confused me, I spent every second thinking “why is this like this” but once a sense of familiarity with Greenvale and it’s residents set in and navigation became less frustrating I fell in love, and it’s a game I still come back to for vibes and lunch with the homies
