It's a shame what happened to Downpour. I thought the game actually had some pretty decent ideas, and I actually did kinda like the story. A lot more than Homecoming at least.

Opinions, opinions. Personally Downpour was a very unfornate game in all aspects, because it had the potential to be one of the best entries of the series, but Konami doesn't like things well made, they want them made quickly.

I loved the concept of someone accidentally getting onto another mortal's Silent Hill. If you get my drift. Since most of the game undergoes our protagonist being in someone else's version of the town

@@sugarveins survive story actually is pretty simple. It was a cut mgo3 dlc (mgo3 was supposed to be supported way longer similary to mgo2) that was made stand alone. It was then delayed for almost a year to add a single player story mode and some new things, while still having a small budget because of the project.
In no ways does survive really hint on the future of the serie and can be judged like a main game (would be like comparing metal gear acid to mgs3 back then) , the game actually had a pretty good supports from the dev (even if some things were never implemented in the game brcause they probably knew the game wasn't going to be popular.)
In the end, survive is just a small spin off and that's it. It's not a main game and didn't "killed the serie".

the scariest thing in this game is occasionally when you go through doors, the camera goes thru Murphy's head and you see the inside of his head model for a split second, unintentional jumpscares arent better than regular jumpscares

Oof, that SH2 quote at the end actually made me cry a bit. As someone that's played all the games released in the west when they were released, it's really heartbreaking that Silent Hill didn't at least die with grace. It died in it's own Silent Hill, never to make it through to it's retribution.

The thing about having a blatant criminal as the protagonist is it takes away a big part of Silent Hill games.
In the first 2 games you play as somebody who initially appears "normal", decent people who, over time, you learn are less than innocent.
Silent Hill shapes itself based on the psychological pain the protagonist lives through and on your second play playthrough you notice what aspects of the psyche and trauma each enemy represents.
Having a guy who is clearly and objectively a bad dude right from the start doesn't allow for that growth and discovery.

Aside from it's several flaws I really liked SH Downpour, much more than Homecoming to be true. Downpour had some brilliant ideas like the side quests and the plot. It could been better? No doubt, but it isn't as bad as people paint it.

I forget if I posted this before, but the Ogre Battle series! It's not the most well known, but it practically created a lot of it's genre's norms, despite being almost unheard of...despite also kinda doing relatively well? Also the director for most of the series, who kinda went through studio ping pong mentioned wanting to do another one, and the last time this happened, they put out some of the best content to value ratio on the PSP. Tactics Ogre on PSP is like 1200+ hours long (though the speedrun record is 3:45ish), before 100%ing it, has more mechanics than people have been able to fully parse in a decade now, solid writing, dozens of endings, and ultimately only has like 3 minor bugs. Even the guy working on the rebalance (www.moddb.com/mods/one-vision1) regularly finds interesting stuff on there, like the rough point where the dev team must have realized that can't make the greatest game ever, and the code just goes from organized to a vomit of random information, to debuffs all having weird side effects that may never have even been mentioned, but make sense (Like a debuff that slows movement reducing dodge...which was usually over-written when a character is trained in dodging better, since they now know how to avoid it).
Anyhow, I could rant about this game forever, but the entire series is like this. I like to joke that it all consisted of Matsuno or whoever was emulating him that day sitting down, snorting down their expresso and coke smoothie, and just throwing out ideas until they passed out. The programmers would have until their coma wore off to make it work. It's the only thing that would explain how these things got made the way they did.

Well, I think that going forward with a divisive opinion from focus testing is a decent way of using it. If you try to maximize enjoyment in focus testing that's often how you end up with a pretty generic game with a compromised vision.

Tomm Hulett's kind of a tragic figure. Matt talked about this somewhat, but basically, he jumped into Silent Hill because he was a massive fan of the first three games, and he stayed because he wanted there to be SOMEBODY on these projects who understood the appeal of the franchise, but it seems his lasting impact was to have the franchise die a slow and lingering death instead of just crashing into the ground like Final Fight or other once-famous IPs that vanished. He was barely able to talk Konami out of having a big DBZ-style energy duel between Alessa Gillespie and Joshua Shepherd in Silent Hill Homecoming, to give an example of how bad it was.
And because he was the self-appointed face of most of the post-Team-Silent games, fans sent all the hatred and harrassment his way, blaming the guy for everything that went wrong in the series. Guy had to quit because it was all too much.

Have you heard of True Fantasy Live Online? Level-5 wanted to make an MMO for the original xbox in the early 2000's. Level-5 and Microsoft were at each-other's throats by the end of it due to differences in business culture between Japan and America and Microsoft being aggressive with their demands. When I saw the trailer, I was set to buy an xbox just for this game and its a shame it got cancelled and severed the relation between the two companies.

Yeah, i enjoyed Downpour a lot more than Homecoming overall. It definitely had some major issues though, like all of the Otherworld chase sequences, should have made more of an effort to personalise it to Murph's situation. Same as the monster designs being lazy. Atleast they didn't just go back to sexy nurses so that's a bonus i think. They missed a trick by not being with sexy demon policewomen instead though haha. Would have been cool though if Downpour's otherworld was more prison like.
I also feel the story had major issues because of the entire branching paths thing, while all Silent Hill games have loads of different endings in general the characters and storyline follow one path and then a few select choices nearer the end decide what ending you get, or depending on what optional side things you did. While in Downpour it felt like they couldn;t tell a proper story or develop a strong lead character because they had to always a account for all of these choices you made.

My pitch for better monster themes:
Bug based, particularly centipedes and ticks (think of the tick-covered snakes in Bloodborne.) Murphy’s son was lost while camping. Bugs are also grabby and invade your personal space, which ties into, yknow (google what exactly happened to Murphy’s son.)
Grabby hands and fingers, self explanatory. Bugs made of hands. Drooling mouths.
Leeches. His son drowned and the man who did it is a parasite.
    Water spewing monsters, self explanatory.
Monsters that cry and scream like children. Again, self explanatory.
Basically focus on the horror of losing one’s child in such a horrible way. That’s way scarier than going to prison. Drop the whole prison thing entirely cause it’s stupid. Send Murphy to Silent Hill just over his guilt and depression over not being able to protect his son. He doesn’t deserve it, cause it’s not his fault, but that doesn’t matter to Silent Hill. All that matters is you think you deserve the punishment.
The boogy man, instead of being someone’s Pyro loadout, should be an ever-changing thing that you never get a good look at. Maybe it has a blurry face. It represents how Murphy views the man who killed his son, who in this version, was never caught. Murphy has no closure on this issue.

    • @CrazyPangolinLady
      @CrazyPangolinLady 5 лет назад +35

The prison theme could work if they made Murphy more of a hardened life-long criminal, and a bit of an asshole. And the story could be completely reworked into how he became that way. As it is in the actual game, Murphy basically chose to go to prison, and was more or less a regular guy before that. Which holds no weight.
For it to work, it’d have to have commentary on how and why people become criminals. Murphy could still be sympathetic this way, but having truly terrible things. Themes could include poverty, abuse, desperation, all things that contribute to a person likely growing up to become a criminal.

He felt so much more deep and emotional then most of the protagonists, except maybe for James. But all it did was make things worse. These brands were already established so fans were then alienated and no one from outside the fanbase really even care about the game. We are left with fans that aren't going to want to play the game because it's different now and trying to go after a market that's not going to play it in the first place.
