I love the effort everyone puts into this. Mike shaved, Andy grew a moustache, Johnny stayed up for 9 days straight...
Mike also downed five straight whiskies. For verisimilitude!
v true, thats not makeup lol
I love that Mike made a point of giving Barnaby's coat away, in a character-appropriate way, to keep the tradition of Barnaby losing a coat in every single adventure
Yeah, this series would feel a little naked without that running gag.
@@mysticmind4563 I don't know if you intended that pun, but I chuckled
@@werdna4577 I honestly wasn't. I didn't even realize that was a pun.
@@mysticmind4563 puns on puns on puns
Luke when Kasimir, Edvard or Zillah do anything: "That sounds great, no need to roll anything"
Luke when Barnaby or Lilith do anything: "I'm about to end this person's entire criminal career"
Well that's because Mike and Ellen don't have a hold on Luke. Johnny is a fellow GM, Andy is the other half of Beeples and Jane is scary.
@@Nazbaque also in all fairness Barnaby failing things is frankly hilarious
I'll remind you that in Oxventure Eggbert had a kidney stolen and Merylwen's pet cat was taxidermied into a hat. Mike makes his characters to be abused a bit. Ellen is just a good sport and reacts in entertaining ways.
For anybody wondering, the reason Jane thinks the gang is called the Hobby Horses is because Elenore called them that in one of her letters. I think its the one they receive at the start of The Gut-Cutter Bargain.
Aaaahhhh, brilliant spot! That does ring a bell now, though while I knew at the time that they hadn't given the gang a name, I'm impressed with Jane for having that faint recollection (and for having paid so much attention to the letter from Eleanor for that to have stuck)!
I am a week behind. I thought it was an esoteric reference to Alfred Jarry and all the bulls**t nonsense of stage performance.
Been rewatching Season 1 and you're quite right, that was the letter and I believe the only mention. And the rocking horse sign was mentioned at the start of "Dead Man's Debt."
🙏
"all of Volisport's wealthy and idle" is a criminally underrated line already. FANTASTIC.
It's also a rather marvelous tautology.

Seeing Johnny stifle a laugh at the mention of Chauncey was priceless.
I was sorta hoping Andy would do the Chauncey impressions lol
Kasimir: is the only member of the gang with a criminal background, specialises in manipulation and pulling the strings behind the scenes
Also Kasimir: gives his real name when asked, walks onto the stage during the performance
God I love Johnny and their character
Not many people in the audience will have recognized him. Imagine being one of them: “That actor looks just like Kasimir.” You ponder it for two acts until a ghost appears, the show ends in chaos and the City Council’s gem disappears. “Oh,” you say to yourself, “that _was_ Kasimir, and he was sending a message.”
Now that was a calling card.

Love that while Zilla fully admits that she has no idea what the sandbags are for, Kasamir also has no idea what the sandbags are for, but just bullshitted so smoothly no one noticed.
(the answer is they were used as counterweights for raising and lowering scenery, and for arial stunts)
Previously used for public hangings.
If Edvard ever does choose that ability where he becomes poisonous, he better buy a bright red or yellow and black outfit like a dangerous frog
yellow and black.... return of the beeples.....
@@Max-ps9mg the beeples is considered classical music in Volesport
Or a black and yellow bee outfit
I feel like Edvard's lighting choices basically kept the whole heist from completely falling apart. Also Andy put into motion one of my favourite parts (the Squiffy limerick).
Do you think the OX supporter's club get the full uncensored limerick?
@@haravikk this would absolutely get me to subscribe.
Also, well pointed out @Dee, I really loved that what was pretty much a supporting role in this heist became such a crucially useful role
1:42:24
Love the vengeful tone in Johnny's voice every time they mention bees.
Mike, you’re playing Barnaby flawlessly, as usual. That is all.
He really gets into it lol.
I love how he decided off the bat that he has to sway Luke to agree to let him sway his opponents
Sway-ception
What if Barnaby's been playing Mike flawlessly all this time?
The line 'i stride out there with the unearned confidence of a very very rich person' is nothing short of genius
I LOVE that Mike was the one having to go out and choose between Chauncey and Shattershield.
Squiffy forever proving himself to be the real MVP.
Waiting for the public release of that limerick.
I am so thrilled we finally got to meet Squiffy. Luke did not disappoint!
@@dallydaydream I'm picturing as an unholy mashup of Oscar Wilde and Jacob-Rees Mogg.
Edvard's improv about Squiffy's Birthday was so brilliant! I'm crying.

I didn't realise just how much I'd missed Oxventure blades in the dark. This was a phenomenal episode, absolutely up there with the best d&d or Bitd episodes they've ever done.
Setting a character up so that they're physically separated from the others is always a tricky tactic, but Andy smashed it out of the park, every contribution was golden. In fact, everyone brought their A-game, looking forward to the next one!
Absolutely, I really loved that what was pretty much a supporting role in this heist became such a crucially useful role, and didn't feel like he was out of the action
Johnny’s face as Luke sets Shattershield’s death into cannon was priceless
It sets up a fun mystery for the DnD Oxventure. Is the opera re-telling a story that actually happened in Geth's past, or is it a fantasy tale that just happens to feature three historical figures?
@@Amaritudine the opera was based on a popular folk tale, which in turn was loosely based on a true story.
In reality, the Lady Fyengeh threw the ruby when participating in one of Dob's favourite pastimes, and Shattershield was fished up immediately after he was accidentally knocked into the river by Egbert.
The story was written under a pseudonym by Dob, who embellished some of the details to cope with his own disastrous wedding. Chauncey wasn't even present but he was the only other paladin Dob could remember the name of.
@@Dramono i really like this idea
@@Dramono that is perfect, I love it so much
@@Dramono not so embellished anymore, lady Fyengeh and Chauncey are actually married in the canon now.
In the BitD guide, there's a list of names for potential NPCs. I suspect that Luke took Emeline Morlan from there, possibly forgetting that Emeline was Lilith's murdered professor's name, and Morlan was the fighter that was fried. Not that it's a big deal; I just like to imagine the two of them in a big coat, masquerading as an opera singer.
Wait, different people can't have the same name?
Today I learned!
They showed that page on _Show of the Weekend._ Luke made extensive use of it. It’s a gold mine if you need to spell the name of an OP:BitD character.
Volisport is a small town in the way that so many big cities can be. I eagerly look forward to Emeline betraying the Hobbyhorse in retribution for what they did to her cutter relative.
I was rewatching The Big Score in preparation for this one and I just realized... there were three casualties, which means one pair of Dimmer sisters died, and one sister lost the other. There's now a lone Dimmer sister out there who likely has a burning desire for revenge on our heroes. I don't know if Luke will remember this, but since the victims went unnamed, he could throw this in if he wants to really catch them off guard. I bet they don't remember this at all!
Didn't they already entangled once before? Seem to remember demonic or bad ghosts consequences having happened once before
@@photoo848 There was a demon in the vault door at the Dimmer sister's mansion; a horrible wrapped in rags thing that didn't like light iirc? Dimmer sisters would be an obvious source for some unfortunate payback… but then maybe Luke won't want to do obvious? Might just be some evil ghost runs by in the street and punts Barnaby in the nards.
@@photoo848 yes, at the end of the balloon race, they gained a wanted level and Kasimir is supposed to have a ghost problem now.
Perhaps the third wheel here was the WMM dying
@@Dwhayworth Oh that's true. Didn't think of that...
Alright you guys, I watched season 1 again in prep for this. I'm ready for some
L O V E L Y C R I M E S
The most validating thing as a Blades GM is when Luke forgot to ask for load.
SNAP!
I’m such a big fan of this series. Every episode has felt like everyone is bringing their A game. They all make such an effort to think about their characters and act appropriately. Special shout out to Mike for consistently picking in character choices, rather than best course of action choices. Extremely wonderful work all around!
Edvard, rolling up his sleeves and taking a swig as Chauncey inexplicably crumples:
It’s *Squiffy time*
Being in a job search at the moment, I was anticipating Luke saying "Edvard, you sent in your papers, you had an interview with someone who was very impressed, and you, in fact, did not get hired."
“It’s like eating a bath bomb..”
Edvard accidentally creates the latest Tik Tok trend..there were no survivors
As someone who's been GMing many sessions of Blades since the last season, let me just say that Luke's GMing here was spectacular, particularly in a lot of subtle instances where his phrasing was beautifully non-partisan, and he made this full-cast episode work so well!
I'm actually just starting to DM Blades if I can get a group together and I'm getting so many pointers from this. He's beautifully managing every player and giving them their own time to shine.
I want them to keep including Squiffy in the story. 😂
Also I would like them to put the opera singer as someone recurring. Maybe as a lover of Barnaby's or a contact for future lovely robberies in those art circles... 🤔
Barnaby did just pick up a special ability to enhance his, um, intimate relationships. So Emiline could definitely come back.
@@Reedstilt Wearing someone else's floofy bridal gown to do a lovely crime is really an underappreciated form of intimacy. Possible 6th love language?
Barnaby's cross dressing has to be one of the most hilarious (in a good way) things which has had to occur on BitD. And not entirely unexpected.
I can't wait for these lovely criminals to return with their shenanigans.
The entire third part of this can be summed up with "What is happening?!?". And I love it.
And somehow they pulled it off.
Many delightful things in this episode! Including Zillah’s sneaky sandbag stacking to look busy, Lilith’s amazing schemes, and the two of them taking over the rolling so Kasimir doesn’t take too much stress.
I cannot express just how much I adore the stories Luke and Johnny are preparing and the whole lot of you are enacting. Better entertainment than any show I know. Thank you so much for all the good times
"When Squiffy laughs he kicks his legs like a little baby."
Me: The tale of Eustace 'Squiffy' Strangetide.
That was a tense, meticulous, yet chaotic heist - masterfully executed by Luke and all the players. The consequences and fallout should be spectacular - it was a bold move to opt for a heist where the whole point is to get noticed and send a message to everyone watching. And speaking as an opera fan, the setting was handled brilliantly and hilariously.
Now that we know the Hobby Horse gang's name and its origin, maybe in time we'll learn out how the Oxventurers Guild chose their in-universe team name?
Johnny trying not to lose their sh*t when Chauncy got mentioned 😂
Ellen: "Do I get the stress for all of those?"
Luke: "Stress is not the problem for you Lilith."
Me: On the contrary. I would say that Lilith is *_quite_* stressed with the situation she finds herself in at the moment.
I made the mistake of eating popcorn while watching this and almost died choking several times when I absolutely lost it laughing. Absolutely brilliant performance!!!
Zilah doing an npc animation loop with sandbags was great
Johnny's expression when they say to make the play about bees is hilarious. I love watching this now and knowing what Johnny does in Legacy of Dragons to account for Chauncey marrying Lady Fyengeh, but seeing their expressions at this info is so good. Everyone is so good in all of these, but especially in this one.
The entire section of trying to lower Lilith to get the gem and it going catastrophically wrong had me wheezing from laughing so hard. Everyone's expressions and reactions are so great.
Could be because my mom has been watching White Christmas a lot since it's 1) her favorite movie of all and 2) Christmas, but Barnaby miming as Emmeline sings reminds me of when Wallace and Davis mime to Judy and Betty's singing when they go on to give the sisters time to escape.
I do also love that we know Shattershield doesn't die going after the ruby, because in Legacy of Dragons Chauncey is also ready married to Lady Fyengeh, so he dies in another way.
A most wonderful episode and now my new favorite (I love them all though).
I can only say one word about this play... PERFECTION. Blades are back with a kick in style. :D
I love watching Johnny/Kasimir and the many eye rolls, face palms and spurts of laughter as things unfold..
Mike plays such an amazing character and acts it perfectly. Makes me want to see Egbert take a serious shift (maybe temporarily) in his atonement arc.
As the saying goes: Its not over until the ghost head spins
Hell yeah! As much as I love the Oxventurers, this is my favorite trpg game from you guys. I just dig the vibes better and I really like the setting.
So glad BitD is back. I love the characters, Edvard and Barnaby are my personal favorites though. Mike and Andy absolutely knock it out of the park with their performances.
Just Mike's levelling spiel was worth hitting like, this is gonna be brill!
Quite possibly my favorite ever line delivery in all of media is the "nO! You can't!" from dear Barnaby. I've missed this so much. So many brilliant moments
Johnny shows his mastery of control, barely flinching when the name of the opera comes up. Willpower: 100
I love watching Johnny's reactions - some of their facial expressions are superbly in character for Kasimir and with others you can see how hard they're working to hide a smile at the Oxventure DnD references.
I absolutely love Elen. She made a joke that made herself crack up, saw no one else even smiled, and stifled her laughter in horror. Then she was "extra" stoic for a couple minutes to make up for it! I've done the same thing so many times!
what a great return for Blades in the dark, was hoping that Paige was going to be Chauncey, can't believe how far they made it though the events before Barnaby lost another coat, though maybe there is a chance he can get this one back.
Regarding Zillah’s attempt to put Barrel Bertie in the recovery position, I personally would think her character actually would have some idea of how to handle an unconscious person, given her prizefighter background. She may not know the why’s, but understand that you lay people in such-and-such way because there was that time so-and-so choked and we don’t want that again.
Also, is Johnny TRYING to traumatize Kasimir?
As an opera buff you cannot believe how much I enjoyed this episode. Absolutely killed it. I can't believe the gang made up a decent opera/chauncey lore on the go (I'd totally watch it),
I always love when the main theme starts playing right when things start to kick off. Really exemplifies the exciting heist feel, and it reminds me of whenever Life Will Change played in Persona 5. Awesome start to the season, looking forward to the rest of it!
Ahh yes, the classic “shit’s about to get real” song.
lol watching johnny trying so hard to remain in character but you can tell hes just holding back laughter and rage
Johnny is amazing and I thoroughly enjoy watching their facial expressions during the whole video.
Damn I love Janes whole look and demeanor this show she just looks ready to punch someone or something
Well she is playing a former prize fighter who can still knock people out if needed like when Miss Picket was nearly alerted last season
Honestly Luke being DM in Geh's future is really funny for metagaming as he can attempt to just talk things into existence 😏
Platform Goliath is laughing.
I'm running the first session of this with some friends tonight since the first season of this looked so fun! Can't wait for S2 😁
i don't know about anyone else but i would 100% watch this opera honestly
For real though, props to Ellen for the "Bee-side" pun, simply for how long the disapproving groans lasted.
@1:00:42 The way Johnny's eye signals sync up with the music, perfection!
Thank you for pointing that out, I couldn't hear the music well enough on my first watch through!
@@alexharrison2743 Pleasure! Yeah it's barely audible on mobile 😅
I love how relaxed and natural Luke is when he is delivering horrifying descriptions. 😆
Absolutely killed it, and me.
The absolute best thing that could of come out on my birthday by sheer chance.
I can't wait for Barnabee's body count to soar in this new season
It's spelled "soar" in this context.
And I am equally excited.
@@weneedaladder8384 fixed, thanks!
Love this episode. One of the best Blades in the Dark. Everyone is so on point. It’s brilliant.
Johnny deciding the funniest thing to do would be to give that worker their actual name, then aplogising while laughing is an S tier moment
True Oxventure chaos, in a noiresque heist setting. Love it!
Love the D&D call back to Chauncy and Captain Shattershield etc.
Also Johnny plays Kasimir so well, love the low gruff but also the parts Johnny breaks character and bursts out laughing
At last we know Squiffy's full name is Algernon "Squiffy" Squiffington. XD
Thank you for keeping the coat running gag going.
I can’t wait for the return of the Wonderful Mechanical Man and Crew!
*wonderful ;)
(post episode comment) Wow, that was... That was wild, amazing work everyone!
Johnny’s Celia joke was so well timed. Bravo sir
I love the clear effort Luke put into the plotline of this opera.
1st time watching this channel's D&D campaign, now I'm hooked. Well played chaps, well played
Every bit of this was amazing! I laugh too much at Barnaby losing a coat every time. He might be able to get this one back, though. Presumably he will be meeting with Emily (or is it Emma Leigh) again.
I think it's Emmaline. But Barnaby calls her Emily. Barny owes her half of whatever the ruby is worth, so I think she'll keep his coat as sort of a deposit.
Just want to say how well done the music was this episode!
This was amazing as always, as was the music. Assuming luke made the music in this episode too, killing it as usual
Shattershield gets such a bad wrap in everything, he’s just doing his job in Geth and somehow he always ends up being the villain XD
Barnaby in a dress got me absolutely feral.
What a phenomenal return to the blades in the dark universe. You all rocked it and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it! I am so happy that barnaby and the gang are back! You all play off of each other so well, the improv is fantastic from all of you
I love Ellen's puns!!
Loving this more exposed Barnaby, can't wait to hear more about his past
Luke looking like the others don't know what they're getting themselves into with that thumbnail
This is one of the best blades in the dark series but also just one of the best actual play series on there.
Kasimir: "I hate the arts ..."
Brilliant xD
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate how lovely everyone is looking ♡
What an amazing season opener, I'm very excited for the rest
I am ecstatic that Blades in the Dark is back, and I loved the D&D characters who cameoed in this. I cannot wait for more lovely crimes! Everyone is on top of their game in the first episode back.
ETA: I cannot stress how brilliant the last 15 minutes were. I laughed my entire ass off. And Barnaby is down another coat!
Barnaby is always an absolute joy to watch.
Absolutely hyped for this coming back!
Both like and Johnny are great story tellers. This and oxventure are gold.
I find Luke’s voice to be very soothing as a narrator
SO pleased this is back! My absolute favorite! Well done all of you!
Squiffy is the mastermind behind everything, isn't he?
That would be a twist if he’s the main overarching villain 😮
That was immensely stressful to watch, and absolutely awesome for a first episode back, I loved every second :)
I think turning elements from the Oxventure into an opera some hundreds of years later was a brilliant idea. :)
This was brilliant! Loved the setting and the different roles each character picked.
Barnaby Gets About was my favorite childhood story
