    I never understand why they always have this belief that westerners won't play weird Japanese games. They practically revived the video game industry after the crash.

      cause most don't do that. the casual gamer crowd(the probably biggest part of our consumerbase) only buys one sports game, one cod and/or battlefield and 2 flavor of the month AAA titles per year.
      they don't buy games that take up a lot of time, they don't buy experimental indies and they sure as hell don't buy games with complex gameplay loops and mechanics.
      they usually avoid weird genres( and genres that are only seen as weird). you usually won't see one of them play an immersive sim or roguelike/lite.
      they are pefectly content with their copy of maddenXX.

    • @Amanojaku8
      @Amanojaku8 3 года назад +44

      Largest selling games are all Western ones (Minecraft sitting pretty on 200 million+ copies sold).
      GTA does north of 100 million per game, COD/EA Sports titles usually sell north of 20 million. God knows how many billions Fornite has made.
      Publishers want all of their franchises to sell that much, no exceptions, and so will load the dice to follow the money every time. Hell, they don't care if you even play the game, as long as you bought it (and the DLC where applicable).

    • @CleverCover05
      @CleverCover05 3 года назад +51

      @@Amanojaku8 With this list it really helps my point. All the best selling games have something to entice people to keep playing once the shooting gets old. Minecraft, GTA, and sports games all let people role-play some fantasy they otherwise wouldn't get to do. If you're marketing a game to westerners, its insane to think the main factor is the gun. So the EA execs saying "Westerners want guns" is completely missing the point of all those successful games.

    • @Videokirby
      @Videokirby 3 года назад +31

      @@CleverCover05 The comment on the fact they're "all western ones" doesn't hold water either. Several Mario games, including the first, are pretty far up there (at least according to Wikipedia), along with the Legend of Zelda, etc.
      I believe, however, it was a pretty different environment in c. 2008-2010. If you look at the "best selling games of 2008-2010" you'll see a glut of either FPS or Third-Person Shooters. In addition, this is before the debut of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Survival Horror where you're not shooting a gun was not in the public imagination.

      There are of course several cases where the voice lines don't match to whom they are saying. That is because according to Steve Blum in an interview, at one point, a Spanish actor was going to voice Garcia as evident in the trailers. The higher ups founds it less interesting and hired Blum so that Garcia has more of an accent. The whole redubbing was done in just one day.
      As far as glitches are concerned, it's because Japan was unfamiliar with using Unreal Engine at that time.
      So yeah... I'm surprised that Matt never mentioned them. Had B Horror visuals, great gunplay, cool enemies, and a quirky sense of humor. Any shortcomings were lost on me while I played it. Without any knowledge that this was the product of a ton of compromise, and unfulfilled artistic vision, I was definitely able to enjoy it for what it was: just a silly, gory good time.

After completing both the first thing that came to mind was that neither one of these games would ever see the day of light in 2021 in their current forms. I'm really glad I've got both in my collection.

    Strangest twist in it all. Feels the usual outcome of these situations is the big company keeps the IP like a piece of dragon loot and just sits on it. In this case, EA just handed/sold it back with out much incident, instead of just saying "We published it, we own it now!" Think it's because it's a Japanese made IP and not one made in the west? And, if you'd have come to ask me then if I would rather play either a survival horror game with a heavy focus on using the dark to fuck with your head, or a 3rd person shooter version of Dante's Inferno (which, itself, wasn't anything special), I would choose the survival horror.

    Quick Travis Strikes Again trivia: Damon Riccitiello
    , main villain of TSA and NMH3, is based on John Riccitiello, the CEO of Unity who was also CEO of EA back when Shadows of the Damned was released.
    He was a part of the team for the game Serious Moonlight
    , that was supposed to be a huge open-world RPG based around darkness, that got stuck in development hell since it basically was main dev's, Dr. Juvenile
    's, dream game, and she kept adding new stuff into it. Damon left the team due to that, however he was too pissed about the fate of that game, so at one point he beat Juvenile
    to her losing her consciousness and stole the Death Ball (game cartridge).
    However, Juvenile
    already revamped that game as a sequel to Shadows of the Damned (yes they're in 90s, no I don't know how it works).
    Anyway, considering his real life counterpart is now a CEO of Unity, that might be one of the main reasons TSA points how it is made on Unreal Engine at every available moment lol.

      @@12ealDealOfficial But the EA monster just keeps on devouring. Why? Because as much as some people complain about the dumbing down of American culture, they continue to use the loudest voice they have in support of countless mega-corporations: their wallets. Why are they making Fast and Furious part 6,723? Because people keep buying tickets to it. Why is there an Applebee's or Fazoli's every quarter mile? Because customers keep lining up to have someone else microwave their food for them. Until Americans (myself included) start demanding more from the products we consume, giant corporations will continue to put little-to-no effort into the lukewarm garbage they vomit on us year after year after year. If people keep buying games with "EA" plastered on the front cover, the cycle will never, ever stop.

    While it seems everyone got the ol’ EA shaft here, I really feel for Massimo in this. By this account he seems like a guy who worked hard, rose through the ranks, and got a great shot from his buddy/peer to make a big break at directing a game. Only to be completely buried under misleading advertising so he never got recognition by 95% of people and handed off something that was a conceptual mess with so many revisions.

    I love how back in the day, you clarified that a game was on, "next gen consoles" as a way of saying, "not on the Wii."

    It may have been meddled and frankensteined to Hell and back, but it was still a Fun game with great humor, an interesting and atmospheric world, Fantastic creature design by Q hayashida the Mangaka behind Dorohedoro and even if it the vision was lost it was still a unique and fascinating experience that still had some of the original vision intact. and besides judging by Travis strikes back even if it was recombobulated into something unrecognizable it was still one of Suda's babies and should be treated as such. Plus it also gave Suda and us gamers the wet dream of punching the Not-EA CEO in the face.

    To be fair, there was a time during the PS3/360 era where it felt like every game had to be the same if they wanted to sell big $$$. I still can't forget that time where games were shades of brown/grey with little vibrant colours. Dark times.
    Even in today's era a game needs to be extra extra perfectly good if it wants to sell us a different genre or experience. Either that or be indie because everyone seems more forgiving if the game is indie and it has new concepts.
