In most Fire Emblem games, once you get to the final chapter, then save your progress, 2 things happen: EIther beat the game, see the credits and that's it. Or, you beat the game THEN save, and see the epilogue which gives you the credits scene. This was how the older games handled the player winning. After the Kaga era, the game would flip between things for the player to do after they beat the main campaign on that very same save file. Ranging from trial maps in Binding Blade and Path of Radiance, to skirmishes and end-game exclusive challenges like Sacred Stones and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, to unlocked story and gameplay features upon a next play through like in Blazing Blade and Three Houses. Today I go through them all and talk about my faves!

Point, but I don't think he needed a reason. Walhart wanted to conquer the world/destroy the 'gods', and Grima, as a 'god', was on that hit list. Grima's existence is common knowledge in Awakening, even in Valm--they had a couple of the Gemstones after all, and Tiki was at the Mila Tree.
He could've had some heirloom knowledge relating to Grima's origin though. That would certainly add an extra layer to his disdain for the 'gods' beyond being an expy for Rudolf and/or Alm (if Celica had properly died).

6:54 Engage's developers thinking the multiplayer's a good replacement for an actual postgame/New Game+ is the biggest tragedy here. The game's SP system and the whole "invest into nations for some bonus drops" mechanic is pretty much tailor-made for it.

As someone who just finally recently beat this game, I am also shocked that there's no NG+ or fleshed out postgame, especially after the inclusion of DLC. Skirmishes are nice and all, but the AI is the same in practically every one; they just bumrush you. And once you beat the story and paralogues, you never have to deal with an enemy emblem user again, which makes sense story-wise but is a huge disappointment gameplay wise when they are ripe for creative combos of skills, abilities, and emblem weapons to challenge the player with. It feels like a lot of untapped potential.
You do unlock 10 more difficulty levels in Tempest Trials which is...nice I suppose.

Fire Emblem games could use more postgame 'arcs' that expands on the universe/lore. In SoV, learning where Grima came from was satisfying, and you got to fight it in a way that made sense. So cool!

Surprised he didn't talk more about how much time you could spend in awakening and fates just perfecting your army. Awakening relied on spotpass a lot for this, yeah, but it was still by far the most extensive postgame in the series, and that's now counting how much the DLC added to it. Usually people wouldn't have paired up all the female characters so you still had new paralogues to play and new characters to unlock, not to mention spotpass chapters did the "let's recruit the unrecruitable characters" the best in the series, as long as we count them as non-canon, as they included a narrative with all those recruitments. Fates was also really cool with the reclassing system and the child units were the same as awakening so it also added a lot.

So I didn't get all the child units in one go through cause I didn't care about supports and I was used to playing the game more linear. So I was able to get maybe 5 child units, but never bothered to go get the rest.

My favorite post game was Path of Radiance's Trial Maps. These are the only Trial Maps you can play in English on official hardware, and they're amazing! They provided us with an answer to item hording: no matter how many times you play these maps, your weapon durability will revert back to what it was when you cleared the game after the map ends. This means you can finally go full ham with all the legendary weapons (that are available to you) plus the pseudo-Legendary Forged weapons you create yourself with no consequences whatsoever! To make this even better, you get more legendary equipment from the unlockable characters! For example, Shiharem has an extra Full Guard (nullifies effective damage), Bryce has the S-Rank Wishblade (basically this game's Gradivus), and Ashnard, hoo boy, Ashnard. HE HAS COMPLETE INVINCIBILITY, AND HIS OWN PERSONAL 1-2 RANGE SWORD, AND HIGHER THAN AVERAGE MOVEMENT, AND HIS FINAL BOSS THEME!!! You have to put in an unreal amount of work to get him, but it's sooooo satisfying to mow down entire maps as the Final Boss himself!

now that dlc is a thing i highly doubt we will get something like echoes again hack that was even crazy to get when it came out most games just put post game in dlc instead sadly like i would be happy if we got something like 3h or maybe even unlock some non playable or boss characters for post game that would probably be enough to satisfy me but obviously getting something like echoes and fe8 would be the best of the best but i don't think will ever happen again

@@laith7266 That's because the game resets once you've beaten the final map to right before the chapter. The game also doesn't really recognize them as Story relevant as the characters don't have any supports with characters outside of Robin. Story wise, it also doesn't make any sense for them to happen after the Big Bad has already been dealt with because of what happens to Robin in the final level and the fact that all of them are dead in the story(outside of Priam).

I loved new game plus, the most common use of it for me was just buying the class mastery skills. Theres a certain unique fun challenge in setting up a situation where a unit can survive tons of attacks and go through many rounds of combat for the mastery XP to get it really quickly, but... sometimes i dont wanna hit pass turn for 67 turns. new game plus does make it easier, so i try to not use things that wouldnt normally be available to me. like i dont buy death blow instantly lol. but also mostly for recruiting people to have different teams, even though that usually makes chapter 13 a nightmare lmao

The lack of of a New Game+ in Engage is what instantly killed the experience for me. The lack of a support log being saved through playthroughs made replaying the game feel pointless as any progress you work for in one playthrough become irrelevant in the next (I usually 100% support logs in FE games, so this was a particular blow to me). I wanted to replay the game over and over until all the supports were seen / wake up conversations / pact ring scenes were seen, but after seeing that the game doesn't keep a log, I played it only 3 times and dropped. They really prioritized the gameplay to be fun while dumping everything else.

And even then the gameplay isn't even close to being as good as it's cracked up to be.
If there was SOMETHING extra to do after beating a playthrough and the game had an actually good soundtrack, I MIGHT have not returned it. Though it would still just be a worse version of Fates in almost every way.
No, altered level-ups barely change anything, and it it was up to me, I would just make all future FEs have fixed growths on different files, the only small exception being what class you're in.

It'd be awesome to see NG+, post-game maps expecting you to max your units, and post-game lore all in a single game. I'm excited for a new remake next that hopefully has some fun post-game stuff with bonus lore, but a new game can hopefully take more liberties with how it's set up and won't need to follow the traditional formula they always try to.

Something I would love: replayable maps.
Similar to how Engage scales skirmish battles to your highest level units, chapter maps could scale up.
For example: CQ 10. Who doesn’t love it? Imagine taking your end game team vs scaled up enemies there. Master Ninjas, Spear Masters, Falcon Knights, Oni Chieftains, and Snipers.
I think it would so much fun.
Or Reunion at Dawn with end game teams?
I think that would really allow for fun builds and good investing, especially for games like Awakening, Fates, and TH

At first I thought, "There are replayable maps, why do you think they are skirmishes?"
But yeah, having the same win conditions instead of just "Rout the enemy" would be a good way to go. Luckily Fates DLC got it right with the Elincia's Gambit map, by making it a defense map with a turn limit or rout the boss condition.

The one thing I'm always bother with FE is that I wanted a customisable or Free Mode liked new game+ where I can pick any units and their classes if I already have unlock/promote the characters, select any chapters / levels to play on, pick the difficulties of each level before entering and etc. The problem I have with FE is that once you beat the game you go back to the start of the game.
This is a issue for me since FE can be a time consuming game with chores and a lot of thinking, what if I wanted to play a certain level or paralogues again without going through the same thing I already done with different units and classes of the same units I take in battle?

Also, while Fire Emblem may not be intentionally designed for it, the games are still very friendly to challenge runs or doing weird crap like 'oops! all generics' or '+30% enemy growths, baby' or even 'Homeless Dragon -- No Somniel, No Babyrealms, no fun' runs thanks to the understandable math underlying the franchise. The franchise just doesn't really need New Game Plus the way, say, Shining Force or Der Langrisser does.
Like, to this very day, people are still doing Ironmans and 0% growths of Fates and Thracia and Blazing Blade. Or doing experiments like 'what if Lyn was in the Binding Blade'.

Honestly I think I've only ever touched the trial maps once in PoR. Sure like it's conceptually neat to get characters for completing extra maps, but if they don't have any story related stuff attached and can only be used in said maps...why should I bother. I think Thabes is my personal favorite post game since it made a character I wasn't interested in far more fascinating and creepy while also ramping up the difficulty.
I could definitely see a midquel during the timeskip Post game for 3H, or time related shenanigans in Engage. I suppose it is logical to focus more on the main game but still.

I don't think I ever did Thabes Labyrinth in Echoes. Might have to give that a shot at some point.
As of now Creature Campaign is definitely my favorite post game content. I'm not sure I'd really classify Three Houses New Game+ as post game content though. Yes it is unlocked by completing the game, but it's just a means to replay the game more easily on a new story route or the same one again. It's not any additional content like Creature Campaign.
I agree that Engage missed an opportunity here. It brought back the world map, but there is nothing new that appears after the main game is finished. Just more skirmishes that will randomly spawn endlessly I guess. I think they might have also intended for the Tempest Trials to be post game content? But I was never particularly interested in those. Would have rather seen a new Tower of Valni/Lagdou Ruins type area.
Trial Maps are the worst. I never both with them. Totally agreed on that point.

I consider the awakening bonus units as post game content coming in later with game updates. With getting emmeryn walhart and co being added as party members.
Echoes while one of my least favorite games. The post game is incredible to see them expand on grima even further as I had a theory when awakening was new that he has divine powers in him and that proved me right.
I never really played the post game or sacred stones. I did a map or two but it just didn't feel fun to me.
3 houses gameplay is meh so the new game plus just makes it more bearable to play the other routes without wasting my time trying to recruit all the house students. Getting them immediately is always good.

And Echoes, where I started exploring the dungeon, died to a dragon encounter after maybe 30-60 minutes, and realised it was a waste of time. I guess it's fine for people who DO want to find reasons to keep playing and building characters, but, these games already have amazing replayability.

This might be a hot take, but I honestly don't care about post game content anymore. I want to play the game and be done with it, not feel like the game is stretching me along for dozens of extra hours just to occupy my time. If I want to play the game more I'll play it again. I want to play a game once through and be happy with it. I fundamentally don't understand why people act like a game not having endless content and ng+ is a death sentence. It's that sort of attitude that's created the live service gaming hellscape of the modern era.

    • @ShermTank7272
      @ShermTank7272 2 месяца назад +6

There's a stark difference between postgame content that is there on the disc from the beginning and live services that drip-feed endgame content over the course of several months or years of updates. I don't need to "log in" to Fire Emblem every week to check what they added and grind it out; the postgame is there from the beginning, I can choose to play it or not, and if I do play it I can take it at my own pace.
I can see the argument that it may bloat the game (especially stuff like unlocking bonus characters; what reasonable person would beat the same game fifteen times in a row?), but offline postgame content and live service endgame content are entirely different beasts.
