Thanks for liking my home town! As a retired archaeologist I wish I could share with you the prehistoric,Anglo Saxon and later Medieval wonders we unearthed. Norwich was the 2 nd city in England, with massive exports of wool and grain to the Continent.. But by say 1776(!), Bristol and Liverpool had eclipsed us as cotton, sugar and slaves replaced the wool trade as the backbone of the economy. Then this accumulated capital kick-started the Industrial Revolution in Yorkshire and Lancashire, where water power and later, coal, ran the cotton mills.
Norwich has become a charming, under appreciated backwater( but regional Centre). I love it.

The best way to see Norwich is on foot, and take your time. The Great Hospital behind the cathedral is worth a visit. Not far from there you'll find Kett Heights which provides a panoramic view of the city. The village of Hethel is the home of Lotus cars. It was also a USAAF base and there is a monument to the fallen airmen in the village churchyard. It serves as a reminder that for far too many young men each flight could have well been their last. An American who set up a business in Norwich provided the best description of the city: "Quaint but busy".

I live in a small village about 15 or so miles east of Norwich and I go there all the time. It's such an eclectic city that's well known for its friendly atmosphere. The Castle (when it's open), Cathedrals (it has 2) and the Market (with its wide range of food stalls) are some of the city's standout features. Fun fact: from the medieval period up until the 18th century, Norwich was the 2nd largest city in England

The variety we have in the UK makes it fun, as you step into a pub in a new town/county/part of the country(ies) you haven't visited before and sample the brews they have behind the bar. In the early 90s I was working on the door of a very rough pub at weekends, it was like roadhouse. I had told my wife how bad it was and how I was late home sometimes because I had to give a witness statement. Then one day she was in the town shopping with her mum and decided to have lunch, they went into said pub and had scampi and chips. It was only as they left they realised that the lovely restaurant full of blue haired old ladies was the same pub that I told them only the very brave or very stupid would venture into, my cause was also somewhat hindered by the gorgeous barmaid that served them! I tried to mount a defence saying that 2.00pm on a Wednesday is a lot different to 10.00pm on a Saturday night she wasn't having it!

Where are you, Ray? I was brought up in Melton Mowbray, just a bit south in Leicestershire, and remember going to The Major Oak a few times as a kid. And often up to Clumber Park. When I moved to Leeds in 1977, I used to ride back down to Melton and Leicester on my small motorbike. On L plates, so I could not use the Motorway. I used to ride up and down the 614 on the journey, and so pass within about a mile and a half of The Major Oak, past Ollerton. Jess and Chris's video of their trip to Oakham a few weeks ago was SO interesting for me. I used to cycle there regularly as a kid - it was only about half an hour if pedalling hard!

Norwich, my nearest City to my home. I don't know how you managed to find such a traffic free day. As you drove along the Dereham Road, as you were mentioning the Cyclists wearing bring clothes, I lived the next road over (Earlham Road) to the right. You drove past the first place I worked at Wilco Motor Spares. The Bowling House, used to be a Cinema, then became a Bingo Hall, then a 10pin Bowling hall/ Venue. Norwich is a lovely city. The "Prince Of Wales Road" the road where you turned left where the right hand lane is "Buses only" is known locally and "Little Beirut", full of night clubs, bars, violence, Police, etc etc, lots of people come to Norwich for a significant night out, Hen Party, Stag Party, Birthday, etc.
You can't do Norwich in a day. Over 1000 years of history. The Castle will be lovely when fully open, not been back yet to see what they've done to the place.
The Pubs you visited, I've been in them all (More than once) were just a sample. Many of the other local will remember, the long gone ones Fruiters Arms, Woolpack, LaRoeun.

Or is that the only problem with Norwich is that some drivers forget that with growing car use and population increases in a medieval city, you can’t keep all road users, cyclists and pedestrians safe unless changes get made. When I was little (over 50 years ago), many of the roads you enjoyed safely walking down were open to through traffic. If still open, this would totally change everyone’s experience of this beautiful place in a very negative way.

That patch of ground on the right hand side at 1:21 used to be the Earl of Leicester pub, it got pulled down years ago, but did not have permission. 2:36, the row of shops on the right used to be Petes Fruit and Veg, The Upper Crust Bakery and The Ideal Plaice Chippy. 6:47 going over Magdalen Street. 8:08 for the people who know....... Thanks for taking us along, as I have not visited Norwich.
Just a note that Chris missed some freely available bonus points by not mowing down the bicycyclist with a yellow backpack!
More seriously for anyone looking to drive on British roads, although Chris performed an excellent and perfectly safe overtaking manoeuvre on the cyclist, look at how the cyclist passed him again shortly after.
If the cyclist is getting a move on, it is rarely worth the bother of overtaking them, as gettiing around on a bike in 20mph city roads is faster than in a car.
So novices to British roads concerned about how they would manage with cyclists here, the answer is that unless you happen to feel like it, you rarely have to bother, just follow the bike!

@@DaydreamersBarn You are an excellent and very safe driver anyway, Chris, so my comment was really for any Americans who thought 'Ye Gods!' when they saw driving on our roads - it is not quite as bad as it looks.
Just a note on the bus lane which jumped out in front of you. I would have done the same as you, and taken rapid evasive action when in an unfamiliar area.
However, Google 'probably' knew what it was doing, if you were outside the rush hour, although I would not have counted on it.
That is because bus lanes have all sorts of variants, to make life more interesting.
So that many are bus only just for the rush hour, say 8-10 and 4-6 during the week, and not at all on the weekends.
And some are bus lanes only for cars with just the driver, and not for cars with a passenger.
Only worth bothering with if you check out roads local to you, where there should be signs showing the restrictions.
Too complicated to worry about when you are away from your local area, unless you happen to spot a sign, so as you did, take evasive action!

@DaydreamersBarn Jess. Did you know that after the war, the U.S. airforce guys that had been stationed around Norwich during the war, collected and donated a library to the people of Norwich?
Then, in the nineties, sadly, it burned down.
So there was more money raised and a new one was built, which is still there. It's in the modern Forum building, next to St Peter Mancroft Church.

Moved to Norfolk back in 1985 when I was posted to RAF Neatishead, now the home of the RAF Radar Museum. I've been living in Norfolk ever since, so I know Norwich very well. This was a nice little tour of the city. I do have one criticism though. It would be much nicer if when you pan the camera around you did it a bit slower, and smoother. The speed you used here was enough to make me feel slightly nauseous. You know like when you turn your head a little too quick.

The fact the castle was closed, maybe did you a favour, you got to see SO MUCH MORE of the city than I did, as I spent too much time in the castle (I was on a one day coach trip). Also. If you get chance, visit York, but not for one day, book at least an overnight stay, better two or three and explore the place. If I was told I could only visit one more town in the UK, I'd have to go back to York!

During the Second World War, there were several airfields, mainly for bombers, in Norfolk and several thousands of young American men gave service to the freedom of the world there. On their days off, Norwich was a favourite place for the American servicemen to relax and enjoy a beer or two. The Bell Hotel, beside the castle was a popular spot for the Americans. The famous "red coats" of the military were from Norwich. The wool was dyed red, from Madder. It required only one dye to get the colour and was not expensive. Norwich was a wool centre back in the day. A fine Historic City. Shame about the Castle still being closed.

Never been to Norwich, even though I was brought up less than a hundred miles away. just so this was really interesting - again! I did not realise it was a bit like a York - and defo needs to go on the "must see" list. SO much better seeing places "normally" and in more depth, rather than whistle-stop money-shot highlights! You two really do your great country proud.
The cathedral spire (you saw it on the way in) is the symbol of Aviva, one of our main insurance companies. It was a merger between various earlier insurers, one of which was Norwich Union based in Norwich - and whose symbol was the cathedral.
Many thanks again, both of you. Another really enjoyable exploring video.

We try to make sure we see and understand the real England and UK. Yes, we do like to see the tourist areas, but we like to see the ones that are not talked about as much. However, they really show how the country is and we have truly enjoyed it. If you have the chance, we would recommend it as there are many different things to do here.
Thanks again for your comment and continued support. Cheers, Chris and family

Norwich city is dead these days, should have seen it 30 years is was hustle and bustle and full of life and characters. Thanks to the city Council and their obsession with cycle lanes and their hatred of cars they have killed off the city and shops and businesses have closed down or moved.
