Something has happened to me since i moved to England from California and wondered if you have the same experience? I have lived here now for 2 years, and my work week has changed from 63 hrs p/w to 39, so i have a lot more free time and am much less stressed, not only that but so is everybody else, i can phone almost anybody to go out for a pint and no'one ever refuses people are never to tired or to stressed or to broke, it is great no'one cares about what you drive or how you live (as long as you get your round of drinks in), one of the people i drink with is a millionaire and i did not even know, i am a butcher and have been drinking with him for months!! No one cares as it is no ones business, being free from the restraints of working long hours and the whole "keeping up with neighbors" in my opinion is REAL FREEDOM, i think maybe true freedom, people are so real here, conversations are more personal, people tend to not speak if they have nothing to say, and nobody shouts, yes i miss my family but the Uk feels like home to me, like visiting grandma's house. Thanks for the video. It was heart warming
Where are you living in the UK? Some of the stuff you mentioned varies according to the area in which you live. But generally, you're correct. People don't usually care about job titles or earnings or material possessions, but they do care if you're interesting and have a good sense of humour. I've had some friends for years and I still don't know what job they do or how rich they are because that type of stuff is on a need-to-know basis
@LMNOP999 Newcastle Upon Tyne, I love it here, i am sure people "take the piss" but I can hardly understand them so it is OK, but no seriously I love the people here, my wife and I drive all over on a weekend and no matter what small country pub we inevitably up in, we always meet some.really interesting people and have never once felt like a foreigner more like a neighbor, people are so warm and generous with there time as no'one ever seems to be in a rush
@@andymac900 Piss-taking means they like your company and feel comfortable around you, strangely enough. Although, there is a fine line between taking the piss and insulting someone, which can be difficult to decifer even for native Brits. Newcastle is a great choice, Geordies are good natured people. Glad to hear that you're enjoying the UK!
@@Holly-lv3fr Yes well you are living in one of the most inventive nations in the world. James Watt steam engine to Penicillin and televisions and the Telephone all invented by Scots. Try googling Scottish inventors and you have literally papers and pages of our nation’s inventiveness. Only problem is that when we are winners we’re always British and Scottish if we lose 😂😂😂. Any I live in England so I am a traitor myself 🤷♂️🤷♂️. In the long run though nationalist thinking will destroy us humans we all live on Earth and it would be a great place if the was just one country called Earth - maybe then we could drop our flag waving and be altruistic about humanity which would give us a better chance of being around a lot longer. Only problem is Scotland is not big enough for everyone to live in the most beautiful place on the planet 🥰🥰😂😂😂😂
On the topic of food, I live in Canada and have the same experience when I travel to Europe in general. My son, who cannot eat wheat or dairy in N. America recently went to Wales for university for a year. He could eat ANYTHING! He felt so much better and actually attained a healthy weight which is tough for him here. I have even had medical professionals acknowledge the food quality in Europe. So yes. It is a thing. Lucky you for providing yourself a much healthier life. ❤
Hi, I am really enjoying sharing in your journey. Thank you for sharing. I would be really interested on your thoughts on the education system now you have had a few terms under your belt.
We feel grateful to be here ❤️ Thank you for sharing your story. We’re glad to hear your son is feeling better. It’s quite remarkable how different the food can be!
I am also from Canada. We travelled to the UK, Scotland, and Ireland last year and I was not bloated. The butter tastes like what real butter should taste like. There is definitely a difference in the food. It is better in the UK, Scotland and Ireland.
@@karenle5 Canadians!! Just say it like it is - you’re most likely a Scot! So many Scot’s moved to Canada since the late 1940’s. Plus there are loads of French speakers in Canada - another thing Country that the Scot’s have always had extremely close ties with, since most of our Scottish Kings took refuge there since the 13/14 centuries. Great place, nearly as good as Scotland but a bit too big and full of polite friendly types. - just like the Scots 👍🥰🥰
As a proud Scotsman and resident of Aberdeen, I can't tell you how happy it makes me to hear how well you have settled in to our wee country. All the best to you ❤
The trope about us all running outside the second the rain stops is so true. I’ve spent whole days on the beach, wrapped in a blanket bloody freezing cause no way I’m wasting that sunshine!
I am glad to hear that you are settled and enjoying Scotland. I spent 17 years abroad, now back in the UK, and couldn't be happier. It was a great adventure. What suits you at one stage in your life is not always what you need, especially as you get older.
Another uplifting viewing, so much positivity 💕 Zach you should be a teacher or life coach, so much strength and kindness in you, the world needs more people like you and Annie, just magic 😊X
The reputation of British food is based on American troops' experiences of wartime rationing. It's like suggesting American food is beans and bacon cooked on a fire beside a covered wagon. Like in all the cowboy movies of the 50s.
@@SimpleScottishLiving I can remember years ago after my first trip to LA, returning to London Heathrow and being desperate for a plain tuna salad, no dressing lol. My indulgent side had loved the food in the USA and the massive portions but my body was crying out for nutrients it was missing. I must have looked like a crazed addict consuming that salad at the airport. What it taught me was to seek out the better restaurants when visiting the US and not go with big value fried breakfasts and dinners. I found you can eat perfectly fine in the USA, but the culture of mainstream eateries is definitely aimed at high fat, sugar and carbs, in a way that is much less acceptable here in the UK.
I love being home in the U.K. after 20+ years with my American husband. We have never had even one trick or treater in either Oxfordshire,Norfolk or now back to my home county of E. Sussex.
Thank you so much! Too much negativity and controversy out there, we just want to spread a bit of normal life happiness from our beautiful corner of the world. Have a great weekend!
There's an Aussie that also moved to the UK and she LOVES the weather, she said "in Australia we have two seasons, summer and FIRE season", I agree with you both, waking up to sunshine instead of clouds is the best feeling in the world, I'm biased but I think this country is the best country in the world, be happy, safe and healthy everyone ✌️
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! We agree. The weather truly hasn’t gotten us down one bit. Maybe it’s because we’re also use to the fire seasons 😔
It's so lovely to hear that you Love the UK, so many people moan about the weather etc, but I personally like you Love the UK, best Countryside in the world, and Some amazing towns and cities. X
One dark cold December morning I commented to an Australian colleague who married a Sotosman, that she must really hate this time of year in Scotland. Surprisingly she said she loved it and found it so cosy. Watching films and reading books growing up she had always wanted a Christmas with cold weather, wearing fluffy jumpers, sipping cocoa in front of a fire and having a Christmas dinner that wasn't a barbecue
I have lived in Thailand since 2021 , however, back in 2007, I visited a town called Hawick and said that one day I would like to live here.. I crave cold weather and will set-up home there next year
I'm happy you are enjoying the NHS , I work for the NHS in London, and it's a little different. We only have prescriptions free for under 16, over 60, and some chronic illnesses. We need to appreciate and keep it . Politicians are trying to sell it off sadly, and no one wants to sell their home to fund an operation😢 Enjoy your Sunday ❤
Having severe asthma, eczema and consequently severe depression I am really looking forward to becoming 60 next year so I finally don’t need to pay for my annual prescription certificate…
Love you two ❤ and your honest remarks re your life in Scotland We left Scotland for Australia 52 years ago and I was delighted to hear you say there is no bad weather just the wrong clothing, I have always said that. Best wishes and I love your videos 🇦🇺
It makes a nice change to hear positive things about living in the UK, I live in England. They say never talk about politics or religion 😉 your right to stay away from it👍 Have enjoyed following your journey so far and look forward to your next vlog. Have a good week ❤ x
Though me and my friends in the Slaughtered Lamb (in North Yorkshire) talk about EVERYTHING - religion, politics, money, sport - and we agree that what is said in the Pub stays in the Pub. No issues at all.
@raymondporter2094 My other half would 100% agree his local is The Crown, I love a face to face debate but having one through the keyboard doesn't usually end well😉
Great update, it's quite common watching a lot of RUclips videos where Americans comment about how much healthier they are with UK and European food, best wishes to you and your family, ❤Finn.
100% agree on the food! I haven’t been to Scotland (yet) but I’ve been to Switzerland and I noticed a big difference in how good my stomach felt. It’s true.
This was so, so interesting. Thank you also for the huge time and effort that you've clearly put into the video making. It's such great quality and so well crafted. xxx
Bet you're extra glad to have gotten out of the states now, I know I am. Christmas here will blow your minds. Like yourselves, I have not had to use the NHS loads, but when I have, my experiences have been great.
@@paulief3817The NHS might be better than USA, but it's shit compared to France, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Germany etc and gets worse results in regards to treatment. It needs a drastic overhaul and the constant defending of the NHS as some sort of sacred cow is nauseating.
@@sandersson2813 they do that by insurance, which on the UK you can do anyway if you want to, we call it private health but it's essentially the same.
You are so right about the food. We have a son and grandson living in Saint Andrews, so we visit quite often and for extended periods of time. I wasn’t eating much meat in the states, but my son encouraged me to take bites of things he had prepared and surprisingly I loved the food. It tasted more like I remember it tasting when I was a child in the 60s. And….less bloating, losing weight! 😊
Absolutely true about the preservatives! I wish we did have more farm stands and farm food availability. I have now started growing my own and it tastes totally different. Plus getting more exercise by getting out and being more active helps. Hugs from Texas!
We left the States in 2004 so that I could do Masters over in the UK. I’m English and my wife Chris is American. At the time we really missed the US and as you said, one country in of its self is not better than the other, just different. After 20 years we have had a second child and settled into living here in the UK. We tend to agree with you on a lot of the things you talked about and at our age now, going back is not an option. Love the channel.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! Yes, we loved parts of our lives in the U.S., so this was an incredibly difficult decision. We couldn’t be happier currently though! Glad you feel the same!
Reply After recent events a lot of us are thinking of joining you. When the uk voted to leave European union NY was filled with the English. I thought it so awful to be driven from their own country... now I'm working to convince my family to leave! We have dual citizenship in ireland. Updating my passport and saving every penny to make it happen.
Hi Zack and Annie, been following your journey for the 6 months, really enjoy it,so much so that i,m looking forward to each Sunday episode like its a regular tv programme, keep it coming!! ( no pressure) 😊
Great to catch up with the pair of you. A lot of Americans living abroad mention the difference in food quality, how much better they feel and the weight they have lost. The election in the UK was over and done in about six weeks. The US system goes on a lot longer and seems exhausting.
Of course you love it here, there's nothing about Scotland to dislike, even the rain just makes everything greener! So happy that you're loving it too ❤
Scottish rain is the softest in the world. When it hits your cheeks it's so light and fresh. Its good for your skin too. How much could I charge if I bottled it ?!! 🤔🤣
Nothing about Scotland to dislike? What utter nonsense. It is cold, wet and windy for much of the time. In spite of the hype, the food is generally bland and tasteless. The people are, for the most part, dour and unfriendly. There's nowhere worth going. As for scenery, go to Switzerland or Austria. Nothing in Scotland comes close.
Sorry, but there's plenty to dislike. The idea it is some sort of utopia is not something you should be cultivating. For a start the roads are shocking, cities are dirty, high streets are dead, taxes are sky high, public services are in decline, class sizes too big, education and health standards in serious decline etc
@@sandersson2813 If you see Scotland is in such dire state, why don't you move somewhere else? Let the rest of us know when you find your utopia. I won't be holding my breath !! I 🏴
Hi, your videos are awesome, love your channel! About the food quality section: I agree with you about this. I’ve visited Scotland from the US several times since 2019 (and going back again next year 😊) and every visit is non eventful food wise with my ulcerative colitis. Completely no symptoms when I’m in the UK. I credit the food 100% + a nod to the best water anywhere 😊 Ya’ll are spot on about romanticizing the country when you visit it….but even so, my heart still longs for it. 🏴💙
We welcome it! We lived in an evacuation zone and had friends lose homes to fires in CA, so living somewhere with rain is actually a relief. Thank you for watching ❤️
@@SimpleScottishLivingYes, you should maybe not overly use UK too much in Scotland as half of us prefer to use the names of the 4 Nations individually. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we do not have a 2 party system. It is only England who have a 2 party system.
@@SimpleScottishLiving actually in the UK general election as a whole it was looking close at one point whether the party that ended up in 2nd place might have come 3rd in the number of seats one. In the end they did slightly better than polls predicted and kept 2nd place but they could so very easily have come 3rd. So it's a media fantasy that it's a 2 party system in the UK. Nothing could be further from the truth.
@@kirsteneasdale5707 They can use whatever they like, both ways would be correct and the UK including Scotland is a free country so they can choose. Not everyone has siloed thinking and focus just on the nation they live in and quite like being part of the UK. Oh by the way, England doesn't just have two parties either
It’s so lovely to see how well you and your family have settled. It certainly makes a huge difference that you have embraced life here with gusto! It is also so refreshing to have such positive things said about living here, sometimes we do forget how lucky we are. 😊xx
Couldn’t help laughing at your comment about politics in both countries, as someone who’s lived in both countries as well I’d say the British aren’t just as gung ho about their politics. It’s like our attitude to religion, a private matter that’s no one else’s business 😊. Good video once again 👍
Thanks so much for watching! I was actually surprised to see how heated the election got here in the UK in some areas. You’re right though - nothing like the States, especially 4 years ago!
@@SimpleScottishLivingU.K. politics has been feral since Brexit. It coincided with Trumpism and the Conservatives really have become a GOP-lite clown car of a party. They’ve adopted policies, slogans etc. But it’s really just them and they’re in opposition now and will probably have to come back to the centre to get re-elected. They’ve just doubled down with their new leader but she will never be PM. They’ve seen the GOP do it and think it will work for them as well but it won’t. Generally it is more staid and polite and hopefully it will return to that when the Tories grow up.
I enjoy your videos so much! My daughter and I visited Scotland a year ago and your videos are a great reminder of the beautiful country and lovely people. I love your positivity and sense of adventure!
Love watching your story evolve. My wife and I are in the process of moving back to Scotland having spent the last 7 years in Copenhagen and I can totally relate to the remoteness of family and friends points you made. However, things sort themselves out and as we have found a once or twice a year face to face meet-up and regular face-time calls really does help.
Hubby and I recently spent 2 months on holiday in the UK (half that time in Scotland) and I can honestly say that your strawberries were the BEST I've ever tasted! I agree that the food quality (especially fresh produce) is right up there. I really enjoy watching your videos about life in Scotland. Keep them coming.
Hi, first time commenting but i have been following your journey from the start. The smiles and the glow you both have basically says it all, you are obviously so happy and relaxed here. Good luck on your job search, i am sure it will all work out on that front soon.
Thank you so much and thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. We are hopeful and optimistic and like we said are still able to pay the bills! 😁
I would never attack you guys! On the contrary, I am soooo happy you finally talked about the difference in the food. I am so fed up with the food in the US. And food is outrageously expensive anyway, but you have to be a millionaire to eat all organic. My entire family has autoimmune diseases and I attribute that to the food. I would move out of here if I could afford to. Thank you for your honesty! Love your videos!
Thank you, lol. Obviously just our own personal experience, and it sounds like you have some very personal examples as well. Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to watch!
You guys are lovely human beings. You , I hope, have shown people in the UK, just how lucky we are in this country. The UK is not perfect but it's slowly but surely getting better. We are slowly learning from past mistakes. The USA will eventually start doing the same.
A Scot from the Highlands here! Halloween is our traditional holiday whereas the US adopted it from us which is why it's more of a "challenge" in regards to jokes and stuff. Right after Halloween on the 5th of November we have Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night which has passed here now so hopefully you got to see it at least, but next holiday will be the 30th November which is St Andrew's Day. People don't really celebrate St Andrew's Day as a Christian holiday but be aware that a lot of banks will be on holiday and the shops will be selling lots of haggis lol You can get vegetarian haggis easily if you're funny about offal but both are absolutely delicious and easy to cook. Christmas is special as we've got Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day so you get the triple holiday there, after that we've got Hogmanay on the 31st which is a HUGE holiday and it will be near impossible to get in to Edinburgh because of it but they air the celebrations on TV all night if anything lol Hogmanay consists of fire parades, marches, fireworks and concerts, but also in the Islands here we do some viking boat burning which is fun to see too. I hope y'all continue to have a great time here (and emphasis on checking out Hogmanay when it comes around! It's entirely unique to Scotland!)
As a kid in Scotland 65 years ago we only did Halloween. Then we moved England and they only did Guy Fawkes. They are the same feast, Samhain, the start of winter with bonfires etc, but it's all got messed up.
I'm a bit jealous and I've only read the first line of your comment! 🤣 Annie is OK with Haggis, not her favourite but she will eat it...the kids will need a bit more convincing! Sadly Annie has seen some of the Hogmanay TV coverage, which is usually a bit weak, but perhaps things have changed. Thanks for the comment and all the info!
Great video guys. As a resident of the Lothians its good to watch something like this to remind yourself not to take this beautiful place for granted. Also, I recently really enjoyed the Mexican food at El Jeffe on South Bridge - near the Chamber Street Museum.
Scotland bound in a few weeks for the holidays. I always gain 10 lbs in Scotland and spend the next 3 months in CA trying to get them off. 😂. Weird thing is that I can’t digest beef in CA but have no problem in Scotland. Tastes different, too. I agree that food quality for price is much higher in Scotland. Have been traveling to Scotland for 23 years (husband is from there) and I find life there to be so very sweet. What a beautiful country. ❤. (Love California, too!)
We also loved CA, but with Zach’s job, we couldn’t guarantee staying in the places we called home if he wanted to continue to promote. It was luck of the draw and hoping as time ticked on. Had we been able to settle, we might not have moved. We’re definitely happy and content with the decision now though ❤️ what part of Scotland is your husband from?
His mom is from Edinburgh and dad from Glasgow. However, his dad was in the RAF, so he was born outside the country. We go back and forth between LA and Perth.
Hey guys It should be noted that NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland but not free for all in England. In England prescriptions are free for anyone in full time education under 18, of retirement age, pregnant or unemployed. It costs £9.90 per prescription otherwise. Although you can prepay for 3, 6 or 12 months of unlimited prescriptions like I do. There's a big difference in food US v UK. Many channels have done a deep dive into this. Everything from gourmet food to fast food differences. For instance mcdonald's fries have 3 ingredients in the UK V 15 in the US. Which is better I can't say.
Thanks for the info on the prescriptions, good to know! Yes, we just did a price comparison video of UK vs US and got a lot of comments about the quality and ingredients differences! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
We are taxed more in Scotland than you are though, nothings free. It’s mostly shadow taxes, for example, I pay more for my company car BIK tax than my English colleagues do.
@@SimpleScottishLiving @richt71 listed _some_ of the free prescriptions groups in England. Also, people who require medicine or insulin to manage diabetes, or have cancer, get free prescriptions. Further, all their prescription items are free, not just meds for their illness. Unlikely to actually matter, but a more complete picture might help. Best Wishes ☮
As a Scot, after 9 years in my 20's living in NYC I married my wife a NJ Dentist and moved to Nashville and had 2 kids. After 4 years we moved back to Scotland 30 years ago, my wife never drilled again. I fully get your first 6 months, but a few key longer term points - our kids went to Glasgow and St Andrews (no fees), they both are married and now have 2 grandkids each (lots of full pay maternity and paternity leave). Scotland offers a great outdoors, but also job opportunities - be patient. Nice thing we have many friends who have come from all job types - they all go on many holidays and have a balanced attitude. In the US the commodity thats in short supply is time, long working weeks, little vacation time and little sick time. Go on enjoy yourself - I can tell you that over 30 years we NEVER thought about returning to the US and maybe even. less now! Cheers
Thank you truly for sharing that, it is inspiring and comforting. We also had many of those longer terms advantages in our mind and are very thankful for them. We have no regrets so far and we really don't foresee any. The kids are still smiling with this chilly weather too! Thank you again and all the best to you and your family.
Fab update, and you both look very happy and relaxed, so Scotland definitely suits you both. Nothing beats the ability to throw the door open and get out walking, regardless of the weather! I'm looking forward to more Q& A. May I add that the difference in you both from the first Q&A is remarkable.
Thank you, we definitely feel Scotland is a perfect fit for us! We learn something doing each one of these videos, so hopefully we're getting a little better at it each time 😁
I love your positivity. I do hope you find worthwhile jobs very soon. I’m a Brit, living in Surrey, who has travelled quite a bit in the US so am enjoying hearing your perspective on this big move you’ve made.
So, 6 months in and no regrets, that's a very good sign. I'm happy for you both that it's all working out for you. Christmas should be very magical for you all in Scotland as it should snow ❄️☃️ which makes it feel special. Have a great week, guys. 👍🏻
Thank you so much, so far so good. Yes, I'm looking forward to showing the kids, and Annie, and good, frosty, cold Christmas and I'll have my fingers crossed for at least a dusting of snow!

Love the 'freedom to roam' in Scotland, small country big landscapes. In September I went cliff walking in the Mull of Galloway and Portpatrick area of SW Scotland, every day was magical and the Ayr-Stranraer train is one of the best scenic routes.
Hi guys. I love watching your vids and listening to your experiences of things Scottish and British, not forgetting all the other cultures we have in OUR country.I hope you partook of the Remembrance Day observance. Maybe even watching the Saturday NightFestival and the Cenotaph on Sunday morning. Annie, just to let you know for nexttime that the poppy is worn on the left usually on the lapel. Probably as it's close to the heart I like to think. I always shed a few tears on Remembrance weekend. Zach, try writing to your MP. About joining The Police Force of Scotland. I cannot believe you've been told to wait 3 years with your experience when our Police Forces are short of officers. Being as you were with the CHP, I'd of thought you'd make a cracking traffic cop. Keep up the good work.
Hi, thank you for the kind words. Yes, we all had our poppies on and the kids got to experience a minute silence during rugby practice Sunday which was very special. Good point on the poppy, I'll take the blame for that one 🫣 I appreciate your comments, as I understand the three years is so they can carry out the relevant background/security check, which is understandable.
I am Scottish my husband is American. We have lived in California, Georgia, Florida ,Ireland, England. So I can relate to your story at the moment we live in Scotland in the summer, the rest of the time in Georgia we would rather live here for all of it, but we have children and that’s what makes it complicated but I’m so happy You’re there with all of your children and wish you both the very best ❤
I really admire the way you get your family outdoors as much as possible to take advantage of the environment around your new home! I love the Scottish 'guising' tradition- so much more to it than just holding out a candy bucket. I wish that was more of a thing down here in England. Re the quality of food debate- I remember reading some testimony from an American who travelled to the UK for 3-4 weeks every year to visit her partner. As it was a vacation for them, they were eating out a lot, and treating themselves - not thinking about healthy eating at all. However, each time she returned home she found she'd lost a noticeable amount of weight. She could only think it was to do with what was in the food here (or not in the food here). I guess portion size would also be a factor. Interesting to hear your non-partisan thoughts on elections in the two countries. I think that maybe the biggest difference is that our election campaigns proper last 6 weeks only, and so they don't dominate so much of the news for so long as they do in the states. The other difference is that here there are strict limits on the amount that can be spent on an election campaign, and so relatively little time is spent on raising funds, and more time addressing the actual issues at stake. Obviously there is fundraising, but it takes place quietly throughout the year, every year, and not a big push in the run up to the election. Glad you have no regrets about your big move, and intend being here for the long haul.
Thank you! We've always loved and encouraged our kids to get outdoors...possibly helps that we've almost always had dogs! Hahah yes I like the idea of kids having to earn their sweets too! Thanks for your insight on the other topics too, we appreciate it when people take the time to leave comments,

I spent 14 years living in the Republic of Ireland in a rural area. I was very pleased to return to the UK on the English Scottish border , again rural but with a much better infrastructure and more accessible health service. Don't get me wrong Ireland was beautiful but the culture really is very different
What a silly rule the 3 year police one is! Wouldn't be so hard to get a report from America and have Zac a 'bobby' here. He's experienced and just what we need! I hope you both find what you are looking for in work. I think you are a lovely couple, full of life and positivity. I'm so happy you are enjoying your move and long may it last! 😊
I thought so too, I even laid out my seven plus year history of law enforcement, but it was a non-starter 😵💫 Thank you for your kind words and for watching!
Not silly at all. I feel so much safer knowing that not any John, Dick and Harry can get in the forces so easily. It’s easy to forge documents and with terrorism and what’s going on in the world, you should be thankful that some safety procedure is in place
@@SimpleScottishLiving - Re. Police Scotland - Residency Criteria - resident in the UK for a minimum of three years immediately prior to application. First time watching the channel and loved the video. I'm based in Stirling having moved up from England seven years ago and even I've had a little bit of a culture shock (in a good way). There is definitely a far more supportive and community feel in most of Scotland to down in southern England. One thing that may come as a bit of a shock to the system is just our dark our winters get. It's quite common for people around now to go through a bumpy patch with their moods, energy, etc. as they adjust to the days darkening. If you do notice anything like that it's absolutely worth picking up an SAD lamp and getting outside as much as possible on sunny days (though it sounds like you've got that nailed on). Looking forward to watching more on the channel and welcome to Scotland!
Thank you so much! Yes, I've prepared Annie as much as I can for the 'dark days' lol. We actually just got a SAD lamp and love it, thanks for the kind comment!
I’m so pleased you are all enjoying your life in Scotland and you don’t have any regrets moving here you are such a lovely couple and l really enjoy your video’s glad the children enjoyed hallowe’en love from bonnie Scotland ❤
Absolutely, Hallowe'en is all about the community you grow up in. In the 90's, living in a village in the Campsie hills, our kids were wee, plenty families lived around us and Hallowe'en was really a big event, guising was prepared full of effort. And of course, Hallowe'en has its origins in Scotland and Ireland, transported to the US by settlers.
Scotland is way better than England for being dog friendly. I have come up to Scotland on many occasions with my dogs and the trespass laws are much freer than in England. Walking your dog in the highlands is so damn perfect. So pleased you are feeling that the move has been right for you both. Our UK weather is so changeable that it makes us appreciate the days we love the most. Great update. XX
Thinking of sending this to my son and daughter in law! They live in California too. I worry so much about their safety, especially the children with the gung ho attitude to guns etc. Now he that shall not be named has been voted in I am worry even more, especially for my granddaughters. So happy you have settled in so well, hope it all continues to go well and that you eventually find the jobs you both want and deserve. Love your videos you have such a happy and positive attitude. ❤ xxx
Safety was a big concern for us, but there are some wonderfully safe and exceptional areas of CA. It is such a personal decision to move, and income is a huge factor as well. I’m sure they’ll do what they feel best for their family, but for us, this was it. We couldn’t be happier!
This was a lovely video, made me smile a lot. I have to confess though that I watch you guys at 1.5 speed. I would never have thought that Zach was in the police!
Hi Im in West coast Lancashire area, UK and just stumbled on your vlogs. Your enthusiasm is lovely and I understand it as Scotland is lovely. I had to smile a bit where you described being more comfortable with your kids and their safety especially moving from California, and your safety in general. We have an ongoing saga with our King's youngest son who has moved to California to live and raise his kids as he says UK isnt safe! I read of many Americans (some very well known actors) who have moved to the UK as they feel safer and more comfortable. Are we talking about the same countries 😂😂.
Thanks so much and glad to hear you’re enjoying! Yes, although there are definitely lovely places to raise children in CA, Scotland is on an entirely different level. We couldn’t be more grateful to raise our family here.
On the food question, just compare Heinz Ketchup ingredients in the US compared to UK, that will tell you all you need to know! Also, the US healthcare system tends to over treat and over prescribe. This is of course due to it being a money making industry. The NHS treats as necessary and is more efficient by being government funded. Waiting lists here have deteriorated under the last government, but hopefully the new one will improve this.
I suspect the unhealthy food is also related to healthcare. In UK the government has a vested interest in keeping people healthy as it reduces strain on the NHS. In USA the opposite is true, illness is good for business.
I’m an English expat living in thailand.. I feel that many of the things you feel, I believe are normal for all expats where ever you live.. having the reset option in your life gives you the chance to leave behind all the negatives and embrace new positives
Love the new intro! Your videos are so enjoyable to watch & I look forward to them every week. Didn't realize the challenge of finding work there after Covid & appreciate your honesty. Same with your honesty about the quality of the food and politics. In Canada, we are worried about the change in leadership & how it will affect our economy. We do feel the same level of safety in our country as you are experiencing now, which makes me very happy for you and your family. Looking forward to your next video and hope you both have a fantastic week!
My son is married and works in Austin TX. He says that food is more processed and more costly. If you want normal type UK type foods in the USA you have to buy organic and that costs even more, also he eats more “world type foods”. The difference in the government election in the uk we have more political parties and independents. The UK has no service terms, our PM could be in power for as long as the country votes for them. UK voting is different in that it’s one person one vote and first past the post wins. To form a UK government a party needs to win a given number of seats - there is no state electoral seat system. If you’re buying a car in the UK I always buy diesel as petrol and diesel prices are reasonable similar, diesel being slightly higher per litre, but diesel cars travel more miles per litre than petrol, maybe a third or double the miles. All petrol stations sell petrol and diesel by default. Electric stations are increasing but electric cars are very expensive in the UK. Buying a house in Scotland has different rules to buying in England. If you offer in Scotland is accepted by the buyer that is locked in. In England you can make and offer and then lose the property to a higher offer - it’s called gazumping
Thank you for all that information! Very interesting to hear from someone with experience in another US state! The Scottish home buying experience was stressful enough, never mind having the added stress of gazumping in England, crazy!
@ you’re welcome. I’m Scottish born and was schooled in Africa. I returned to Scotland in 1974. I left Scotland for England and work. My 2 sons are in their mid thirties. Eldest is in Austin TX and had a PhD in mathematics and an American wife. My youngest still lives in the UK. We live near Sherwood Forest and my youngest is an Organic Chemist who works about 70 miles from my wife and myself. You correct about FaceTime or WhatsApp communication, it’s great to be able to talk but times zones are a pain. I became a Grandfather 2 days ago and all my experience of my first granddaughter has been virtual - not the same as being there. At 68 I am not as fit as I used to be so I’m not sure when I will get to give my granddaughter a good hug. Enjoy Scotland. Education is first class and if you’re still looking for work you should try hitting all the online jobs finder websites. As for your husband going back into law enforcement, he will have no gun and will not have the same USA risks as a USA policeman. Finally Scottish police are government employees not like in the States. Same for being a prison officer you work for the government. At your ages you could be eligible to train as a teacher and there is a shortage. Good luck 🤞 ❤️
@@TSM-908 Sounds like you have some extremely intelligent sons! Also, huge congratulations on the new arrival, I hope that virtual hug turns into a real hug someday soon. I've actually been watching Highland Cops on iPlayer and while that is an extreme example, the way policing is very different. All the best!
@ True both are really smart and as my wife of 46 year constantly reminds me that current genetic thinking attributes newborn intelligence more to the mothers genes than the father’s 😂😂🥰. My eldest son in TX was born in Bangour General Hospital, West Lothian ( now closed I believe). His younger brother was born in Leicester General Hospital. So sibling discussions when younger were somewhat heated at times one declaring he was a pure Scot like his parents were as the younger brother was actually English and might require a passport at sometime to visit his parents homeland. The battle of “ The Auld Enemy”. 😂😂. Keep your great content and positivity flowing on your channel. The moment you start using drones, pyrotechnics explosions and CGI Nessie, is when you might lose me 😂😂🤷♂️
It's understandable you want to be diplomatic about life before and life now. But on balance, given recent events, I am glad you made the choice to return back to Scotland for you and your family.
Just found the podcast and am loving it. You're in one of my 3 top places in the UK, the others being the Lake District and Oxford. I'm watching this from Martinique
What a wonderful family! How on earth I stumbled on this video is down to the machinations of Google. I'm from Hexham, just outside of Newcastle and I was at primary school with lads from Glasgow, Newcastle. Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester and even now can happily translate from Scouse to English and vice versa, but it took me a good few minutes to adjust to Zach's accent, while Annie's was immediately clear!! Hybrid Scottish/Bay area accents are hard to pin down! Wish you all the very best of luck and hope you get sorted with work and/or sponsorships very soon, you are both very likable. Zach, I'm amazed that given the fact you were born in Scotland and have the experience and firearms training AND experience that you must have gained in the US, that the plods have not snapped you up? That three year rule seems like insanity given that you were in the US, not the PRC!! Are the Pongo's not even interested or the RMP at Faslane etc?
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'd like to think that a Scottish/Bay area accent is unique...therefore I'll take it as a compliment 🤣 Yes, the three year rule seems to be a common requirement across a number of fields I've looked at and from what I've read is due to requiring a standard anti-terrorist security/background check.
Hi, really enjoyed your thoughts and comments about Scotland. We have the exact same sentiments. I am so glad that you guys made this video; it just reinforces our thoughts. However, we are much senior to you guys. We moved back in 1996. I have shared your video with my wife who is visiting her family back in DC.
Will you two stop being so happy and pleasant, I’m practicing to be a grumpy moaning old man and you are not helping. I love the pair of you for your attitude. Keep going😂😂😂🥰🥰
What a treat to find your videos! I have dreamed of "retiring" to Scotland for many years. I spent 42 days traveling around the country for my 50th birthday in January 2014. I attended the torch-lit parade in Edinburgh for Hogmanay, Up Helly Aah in Shetland with Burns Nicht and Celtic Connections in between. I stayed 2 weeks at Glenbarr Abbey, the Clan MacAllister Centre on Kintyre. In exchange for my lodging, I organized and hosted a 12th Night Revel in the manor house. FABULOUS!! We attended the Military Tattoo in Aug 2022 for my husband's 60th b-day WE LOVED IT! Though I agree that visiting a place is not the same as living there. So, have you met anyone who made the move from US to Scotland in their 60s? Also, we are a 2-generation house with our youngest daughter who works in a research facility. My skills are in the non-proft, arts sector. We're not afraid to "reinvent" ourselves and fully expect to work as long as we are able. Where could we find a good jobs needs list? A potential sponsor? If this convo is better suited for email, please point me in the right direction. Many thanks, Zach and Annie!
That's quite the travel itinerary and we are do glad you were able to enjoy this beautiful country! We've not met anybody who has made the move in their 60s however I'm sure they are out there. I will reach out to our family member who just moved here on a skilled work visa to see if he has any insight into finding sponsors etc. Please feel free to e-mail us with any questions, our email address is on our RUclips page, in the about us section! Thank you!
We definitely noticed the difference in the quality of food. Even at the corner Tesco, the produce seems fresher than at our major grocery store in NY.
Thanks for the update folks. I am so happy that things are going to plan for you. Your political stance was perfect. You acknowledged its presence without making it partisan. Yes British food gets an unusually bad wrap, but I believe that is because coming out of 2 world wars and the depression the Brits were hit unusually hard and the quality and quantity of foods were not great. It’s interesting about Zack’s not being able to get into policing over there. As a former police officer myself I can say that here in Canada a few years ago we used to send our recruiting people over to the U.K specifically to recruit British police officers as it was almost a straight transition for them with very little training. As a veteran it’s great to see Annie wearing a poppy. I know the poppy is not as big a thing in the U.S. as it is elsewhere, just remember you wear it on the left side over your heart.
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for your service. Yes, I made sure all the kids and Annie had a poppy on this weekend and it was really nice to see everyone taking part in a minute silence today while in the middle of playing mini rugby! When I joined the CHP in the US the only residency requirement was that you were a US citizen.
Having lived during the war the people of this country were really in the war in the front line really I think that's why it's big in this country but it's not nice real hardship loved your journey so far just a wonderful family keep up the good wok ❤😂😂
Your videos for us are research for our lives yet to come. Hopefully not much longer and we will be joining the fun. Thanks for all the information. We love watching your videos.
The whole of northern England is so friendly and people are down to earth. So glad you like the lifestyle here and that you're healthier for it.
The pub is certainly a great equaliser.
After six years, we have no regrets either! We love Scotland!
Love hearing this! ❤️
You are very welcome!
We can include that in next week’s video!
I spent 17 years abroad, now back in the UK, and couldn't be happier.
It was a great adventure. What suits you at one stage in your life is not always what you need, especially as you get older.
Well said! That’s how we felt. The U.S. was exactly what we needed while we were there, but the UK is the better fit for us at this stage of life.
Another uplifting viewing, so much positivity 💕 Zach you should be a teacher or life coach, so much strength and kindness in you, the world needs more people like you and Annie, just magic 😊X
You’re too kind! Thank you for taking the time to comment ❤️❤️
The reputation of British food is based on American troops' experiences of wartime rationing.
It's like suggesting American food is beans and bacon cooked on a fire beside a covered wagon.
Like in all the cowboy movies of the 50s.
Hahaha that's a great comparison, thank you for taking the time to share!
Sussex.

I love oor weather. It’s braw!
I crave cold weather and will set-up home there next year
Yes, Hawick is a wonderful town! Thank you for taking the time to comment and share!
I'm happy you are enjoying the NHS , I work for the NHS in London, and it's a little different. We only have prescriptions free for under 16, over 60, and some chronic illnesses. We need to appreciate and keep it . Politicians are trying to sell it off sadly, and no one wants to sell their home to fund an operation😢
Enjoy your Sunday ❤
Thank you for your comment and for the work you do! As we said, so far the NHS has been great for us 😁
@SimpleScottishLiving thank you 😊 I'm enjoying your videos 📹

It’s a crazy phenomenon!
I have worked in the UK and the US, to me a major difference is the life/work balance. In Scotland (and the UK), the priority is family first.

Christmas in UK is horrid. It's so commercial, so in your face, starts too early, constantly invades every TV advert, radio advert etc.

You are so right about the food. We have a son and grandson living in Saint Andrews, so we visit quite often and for extended periods of time. I wasn’t eating much meat in the states, but my son encouraged me to take bites of things he had prepared and surprisingly I loved the food. Hi Texas! Thanks for the comment and that is awesome you are able to grow your own stuff, well done you!
We left the States in 2004 so that I could do Masters over in the UK. I’m English and my wife Chris is American. At the time we really missed the US and as you said, one country in of its self is not better than the other, just different.

Just to say guys, it’s not a two party system. We have the SNP, Lib Dem’s, Welsh Cyrmu and the Irish. Glad you are loving it ☺️
Thanks for the info and the comment. Yes, we were just referring in general to the UK general election.
Thanks so much for watching! I was actually surprised to see how heated the election got here in the UK in some areas. You’re right though - nothing like the States, especially 4 years ago!
So true, we have no idea what anyone votes anymore, and if it does come up someone quickly changes the subject ❤😂
Thank you so much! Scotland is a truly beautiful country, and we are so happy to be here!
Yes, I think having trips planned or visitors throughout the year makes the distance feel less! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your kind comment. We're so glad you were able to enjoy Scotland!
Welcome to Scotland, I hope you continue to enjoy life here ( I'm not too far away in Glasgow) . Have a great 1st Christmas and New Year.❤
Thank you! You too!
You guys are lovely human beings. You , I hope, have shown people in the UK, just how lucky we are in this country. The UK is not perfect but it's slowly but surely getting better. We are slowly learning from past mistakes. The USA will eventually start doing the same.
Thank you very much. We appreciate your positive outlook and couldn't agree more!
You're knocking it out the park.
Thank you 😊 ❤️
A Scot from the Highlands here!
Glad you feel part of the community ❤
It’s a wonderful feeling! We’re grateful.
Great video guys. As a resident of the Lothians its good to watch something like this to remind yourself not to take this beautiful place for granted. Also, I recently really enjoyed the Mexican food at El Jeffe on South Bridge - near the Chamber Street Museum.
I completely agree. Having grown up in East Lothian and now coming back, I am loving re-appreciating everything it has to offer!
What a wonderful couple! I hope you enjoy your time here!
Thank you so much, we are loving it so far! 😁
Nice to see Annie wearing a poppy as well 👌
So happy you love Scotland and the UK in general. Many areas to visit and explore. Hope you continue to enjoy Scotland 😊
Thank you so much, we love it here!
Hey guys
It should be noted that NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland but not free for all in England.
Prescriptions are free in Wales too. We are very lucky. I'm not sure about Northern Ireland though.
@@TSharon400 Thanks for letting us know!
Thank you so much! Luckily, we both have jobs currently, but it was tricky when Zach was looking at the career change initially.
Honestly just came across you two randomly and you grabbed my affection i smiled all through this . Welcome to the Uk 🇬🇧 im looking forwards to following your journey 💫
Thank you for the warm welcome! So grateful to be here ❤️
I always thought, if i could leave the USA, it would be Scotland. And I have to say, that James Hutton is one of my top 3 heros. Always wanted to follow in his footsteps, the paths he took to earn him the name, Father of Geology.
Thanks for watching and for sharing! How weird…I actually just learned who James Hutton was recently. The internet knows all ha!
@@SimpleScottishLiving Yinz should visit some of the places where he hypothesized about geology. There are some really fascinating formations that the boys would love!!!!
Welcome to Scotland! So happy that you are enjoying it.
Thank you! 😃
Monsanto GMO doesn't own Scotland like they do America. You won't find hormones and ammonia in your meat their either.
So glad you are doing well and getting through the process and adjustments.
We've been very pleasantly surprised by some of the differences in food production here. So grateful to be here!
Love the 'freedom to roam' in Scotland, small country big landscapes. In September I went cliff walking in the Mull of Galloway and Portpatrick area of SW Scotland, every day was magical and the Ayr-Stranraer train is one of the best scenic routes.
It’s absolutely fantastic! We’ve definitely been taking full advantage with Finn and can’t wait to explore more. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your story - that sounds like a pretty cool set up you have!
Thanks for your insight on the other topics too, we appreciate it when people take the time to leave comments,
Aww this is the first video I’ve watch of you guys and can I just say; what a lovely warm hearted pair you are🥰 welcome to Scotland, I hope she gives you all her abundance and blessings going forward🙏🏼✨

First time seeing you both, fella I am loving how your accent is starting to take to the Scottish
Thank you! I think you are one of the few who think it's coming back...I am trying!
@SimpleScottishLiving no problem, enjoyed this tremendously, will look forward to seeing more, hoping to get back up there to live again myself, Ayrshire for me
I spent 14 years living in the Republic of Ireland in a rural area. I was very pleased to return to the UK on the English Scottish border , again rural but with a much better infrastructure and more accessible health service. Don't get me wrong Ireland was beautiful but the culture really is very different
Thank you for sharing your experience!
As you probably know... nearby Edinburgh is the legal capital of Scotland. Employment in a crime related role would surely assist & look good your eventual Police Scotland application; such as Paralegal jobs in a Criminal Law practice, which could involve some investigatory work, taking witness statements, organising court papers & documents, assisting lawyers in the practice, etc. and becoming familiar with Police & Prosecution rules & regulations and those for the defence. On the other side, there may be civilian or paralegal posts available with the Procurator Fiscal Service (the independent public prosecutor that is separate from the police) and/or gain similar relevant experience there too. Hope I am "not telling my granny to suck eggs" hereby - albeit an old adage I have never really understood... Good luck. You have a lovely family & you deserve a break with all the time & effort you have made to so successfully assimilate Scottish life & experience. Sláinte!
It's not easy to forge documents from the source. Sounds like you are suggesting our police force are not capable of such an enquiry?
Apparently the correct saying is "Teaching your granny to suck eggs". Still none the wiser however....
Thank you so much! Love it more every day ❤️🏴
Absolutely, Hallowe'en is all about the community you grow up in. In the 90's, living in a village in the Campsie hills, our kids were wee, plenty families lived around us and Hallowe'en was really a big event, guising was prepared full of effort. And of course, Hallowe'en has its origins in Scotland and Ireland, transported to the US by settlers.
Thanks for sharing that, I'm sure the kids have some great memories!
XX
Thanks so much! We agree and definitely don’t take the beautiful days for granted. So happy to be here ❤️🏴
Thank you for being so honest, just love your videos. Glad you like it here in Scotland, I think so too, countryside is so beautiful. 😘❤
Thanks so much! 😊 it’s been the absolute best decision.

Hi
Im in West coast Lancashire area, UK and just stumbled on your vlogs.
Yes, that was one of the examples I noticed when I moved from Scotland to the US...crazy!
I’m an English expat living in thailand.. I feel that many of the things you feel, I believe are normal for all expats where ever you live.. having the reset option in your life gives you the chance to leave behind all the negatives and embrace new positives
You’re so right! Thanks for sharing and for watching! We’d love to make it to Thailand one day.
How come Annie's hair always looks so smooth 😀

Will do ❤️ Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for watching! We’re glad you’re enjoying them!
We’re definitely happy to be here and so grateful we didn’t have to go through another election cycle in person. Thanks for watching ❤️
@@SimpleScottishLiving Your welcome. Yep, we did the decent thing and got ours ours over with in the UK for another 5 years at least. ☺
Just found the podcast and am loving it. You're in one of my 3 top places in the UK, the others being the Lake District and Oxford. I'm watching this from Martinique
Wonderful, welcome on board and thank you so much!
How long until Ranch dressing is brought up?

We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of produce here!
You're lucky to have a Labour government in the UK. Imperfect for sure! But not extremist. We're in trouble here now in the US.
We do appreciate the change and feeling slightly freed from U.S. politics. Wishing you the best!
Your videos for us are research for our lives yet to come. Hopefully not much longer and we will be joining the fun. Thanks for all the information. We love watching your videos.
Thank you for watching! We wish you the best of luck as you plan your move!
Annie has a poppy :)

Thank you so much. Thank you also for taking the time to leave such a kind comment.
