Therefore, we would choose a name brand product and would do the same with the Tesco opt...

Travel with us to the 170th Games. We caught the train from Waverley Station in Edinburgh to the small town of Pitlochry located in the county of Perthshire, Scotland. Pipe bands led a procession down the High Street and into the grounds, where the games commenced. An...

Why We’re Leaving Sunny CA for a New Life in the UK
Your upbeat presentation is appreciated. One suggestion for Annie: a wee bit less nervous laughter when nothing particularly funny is being said.
Sitting here in NH watching your past videos (that the all-knowing RUclips algorithm served up to me) and see that you met here in NH. I've got to ask ... Of all the camps in all the world how on earth did a girl from Georgia and a boy from Scotland wind up in Piermont, NH?
Hi guys great video, glad you like us. This is for the shopping video, you can get American bacon here, just look for " streaky" bacon, if Tesco's is the closest shop I get it but you could get some things cheaper in other stores, also Costco br aware it is not like the American, version some things are the same and some are not, this from videos I've seen. Christmas should be fun, enjoy the " crackers" and the rest, have a great time, till next time bye.
I just started watching your videos. I love your sense of humor. You appear to get each other's jokes. In my opinion, that's vital for a long term commitment. I have been married for 33 years and the thing that attracted me to my husband (besides his good looks ;) ) was his sense of humor. For the long haul our shared sense of humor has gotten us through a lot of life stuff. !!Keep the videos coming. I love them!
Exactly I once lived in an old tiny trailer and by golly I made that place my little palace. ❤
Exactly I once lived in an old tiny, and by golly I made that place my little palace. ❤
Good video 👍. However, the average US salary is considerably higher than in the UK, so it probably balances out that way. Having said that, on several trips to the US, 10 to 20 years ago, I always felt most things were cheaper than in Britain, so this is surprising.
love Annie’s laugh
Great to see everyone settling in. My wife and I lived in East Lothian, Haddington specifically, while I was attending school 5 years ago. We are in the midst of planning a return move this coming summer hopefully. This time it will be based on a skilled worker visa instead of a student visa, which is a bit more difficult, but fingers crossed we make it back 🤞
There is no debate - it was even proved in court Jaffa cakes are a CAKE not a biscuit. The reason was down to tax (VAT I think) added to chocolate biscuits at one point in the past. McVities the makers of Jaffa cakes sucessfully claimed in court that their product was a cake and thus exempt from the tax at the time. Their proof was that when a biscuit is left out and goes stale they go soft, when a cake is left out and goes stale cake goes hard. Jaffa cakes go hard when stale thus was proven to be a cake.
I just enjoy that you are a nice couple.
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a kind comment. We appreciate you watching. Also, coming in December we have a new house tour in the works since most of the renos are pretty much finished :)
I'm surprised, I always assume US would be cheaper. That's quite a small Tesco as well.
Hope my wife and I can make the move in the next 18 months but we're looking at the Netherlands. There's a huge fascist movement here in the States now, and our democracy is at stake. Half of us Americans hate each other now, and cant wait to get out of here.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I hope you are able to find a wonderful place to call home. All the best!
I think ive worked out where in East Lothian 😜 originally from South Lanarkshire this area is amazing love it ❤ too snobby to go back lol
Hahahaha there are so many wonderful places all over East Lothian! Thanks for the comment.
We have been to Scotland twice - so beautiful! We loved walking all over. And the history and castles so wonderful. We hope to visit again. We found food and eating out less expensive but gas almost twice the price of our area in the US. We also went to thrift stores there and were amazed at the variety. True the rollercoaster prices! Love your videos!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We have loved exploring Scotland too and are very thankful to be here.
Try a roll and fritter if you find yourself around Glasgow. I don’t think they have them on east coast.
Thanks for the suggestion and comment!
Why are so many of those prices so much higher in the US? I know there are much larger distances for commercially grown food to be transported to market, but then there are also the economies of scale. Given the huge size of many states and counties within them, is the local food movement a thing? I was surprised to see things like avocados cheaper in the UK, which we cannot grow locally and have to import then. On the other hand avos are grown in the sunnier states in the US. Surely that would make them cheaper in the US? A US family's weekly food/grocery shop must be crazy prices.
Yes, many of the prices were surprising to us as well. Also, having lived in California, food shopping felt very expensive, and everyone mentioned how expensive everything seemed to be!
I’d put hp on the egg. The pie looked a bit dry. Try them from the butcher. They should be juicy. Love them with canned plum tomatoes with a dash of white pepper and Lea & Perrins.
Ooh thanks for the suggestions, we'll be sure to try those next time! Thanks!
Back in 2016 did a 16 day England and Scotland tour. Loved the Great Lakes region of England, but was overwhelmed with Scotland. Loved Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Isle of Skye, Inverness, Loch Lodmond area and Glasgow. Got welcomed to Scotland in Gretna Green with Bag Pipes player!!
That’s an amazing itinerary for a 16-day trip! You must have gotten in so much!
Also in the UK the price you see is the price you pay at the till. No additional taxes
Yes, also no sales tax on food items in California. There are only 13 US states that tax food items. Thanks for watching!
Just wondering - what considerations led you to choose East Lothian to live in? Is that where Zach was raised? I grew up in North Berwick, although I've lived in Edinburgh for 40 years, and I consider East Lothian one of the finest areas in the country. It has everything you could wish for, including proximity to Edinburgh for things you can't find locally.
Hi! Yes, pretty much for all those reasons you mentioned. I grew up in EL, we prefer the smaller town feel, good schools, more affordable housing, plus there is so much to do outdoors and for kids. The proximity to Edinburgh is fantastic as well.
Stop & Shop in Massachusetts has the scanners but they are always malfunctioning.
Nice to see you seem to get on so well, Some of the differences are because of transport, taxes, some about greed, I assumed grapes in America would be cheaper, as they can be easily grown there, Very surprised about those cheaper in the uk as they usually have higher overheads
Yes, there are many factors whish go into the price differences, all very interesting. We were also surprised by some of the price differences!
You're a lovely couple, and so happy and content all the best settling in🎉❤😊
Thank you so much. Thank you also for taking the time to leave such a kind comment.
interesting I went "hmm strawbs seems high". looked at morrisons and they had a banner saying they've got reduced stock due to 'issues'. aldi .1.69 for 227g...
Very interesting, thanks for sharing that!
Good video comparison, how do UK average wages stack up against US average wages? That may contribute to some of the difference.
Yes, that is certainly a factor as US wages can more than 20% higher than the UK, however the US possibly has more costs, such as healthcare, that play into the wage number. It would be interesting to do a deep dive on wages though, thanks.
A yard is either paved or a working / industrial space - builder's yard, farm yard etc.
Isle of Skye, Kyle of Loch Alsh is my favourite. Also the Western Isles-Stornoway in Isle of Harris and Lewis is very picturesque. Fort William and Oban also beautiful
We have all of those places on our list to explore. Thank you for sharing your favourites!
@@SimpleScottishLiving Its a pleasure. There is places in Scotland I havent been, but i did manage to see quite abit in the 2 years i was there (back in 2006-2008) then been to visit about 3 times since for a few months. I lived in Inverness when i was over there and I loved that city too. All of Scotland is beautiful. I even have a 3ft x 5ft Scottish flag here hanging in my hallway. I feel more Scottish than I do South African. lol
The children will have such a magical life!
We hope so! Thank you for the comment.
I'm sure they could be cheaper, but where is the dollar amount? We don't live on pence/pound here in the US. I'm sure it is closer to the same than what you have stated, but don't know🤷♀️ seems like maybe you don't want people to know the actual price?!
Hi, thanks for the comment. We kept (or converted) all the values to the same currency for ease of comparison. Also, since we are now living in the UK and the majority of our audience is UK based we chose to use the GBP. Thanks for watching! 😁
The bit you don’t calculate in is the difference in wages to find out who really is cheaper.
Yes, can you imagine having a US paycheck coming in & living over there!
Yes, that is certainly a factor as US wages can more than 20% higher than the UK, however the US possibly has more costs, such as healthcare, that play into the wage number. It would be interesting to do a deep dive on wages though, thanks.
Just found your channel. I thought you were in EL when I saw the beach (the mussel shells gave it away) and I’m a little further down the coast where we have some great beaches that the kids love. Look forward to watching more of your travels about Bonnie Scotland.
Yes, good spot! I grew up in EL so it's really nice rediscovering all these places withe Annie and the kids. Thank you for the comment.
Firstly, Annie your hair is looking beautiful 😊 It’s so refreshing to watch people just being honest and humorous. It’s very much appreciated. Does watching the adverts help earn you money? If so more than happy to let them roll. Great sponsored product endorsement! Love the mix and match video styles and glad to see family comes first. 😊
Awe, thank you! We appreciate you watching. RUclips does pay us when people watch the adverts, but please feel no pressure. If I’m being 100% honest, I skip whenever I can as well:) I hear that RUclips has been increasing advert time as well, so that’s a bit of a shame. Anywho, Sunday’s video will be about York. That was a fun one!
Sorry, the choice in the UK is limited. That is what you get when you erect barriers between the source of your food, EU, and your consumers UK. Prices rise and availability is reduced.
We would have loved to do a comparison from a year ago and also pre-brexit, perhaps we'll do a follow up in a year to see how things have changed. Thanks for the comment.
Are you sure that you are Scottish as you sound actually like a Yank. I have been to many parts of Scotland from Gretna Green to Aberdeen including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stranraer, Dundee, Aviemore and the Cairngorms which are my favourite place in Scotland, Motherwell, Loch Ness, Ayr, etc etc. 💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🇮🇪🇮🇪
Hi! Yes, I'm sure 🤣 We try and explain the accent thing in our next video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Genuinely surprised
Many of the prices surprised us as well!
We did Paris theme parks fun and fun last year. Enjoy!
Thanks for letting us know, they are definitely on our list!
We became totally addicted to Tunnock's teacakes on our recent trip to Scotland 😁
Hahhaha that's awesome!
Wow I’m surprised by the big differences, but when we were in New York we were shocked by the high price of everything, including food. I thought in America that the farming lobby would have been more powerful. I have heard that more chemicals are permitted in America and meat/milk/egg production is more intensive. When possible we try to buy products that are free range and organic 👍
Yes, many of the price differences surprised us as well! There seems to be many contributing factors in both countries and something that might be worth a deeper dive. When we were in the US we also would often look for free range or organic, but sometimes that price difference was shocking! Thanks for watching and commenting.
What about mushy peas?
Love them!
Thank you! I've friends in Somerset & always wanted to live in Scotland. I'll be retiring in another year & have been considering how to go about a move! You two are a great resource....
So glad you found it useful. Good luck and please let us know if you have any questions we can help with!
Are the kids automatically granted UK citizenship as a result of having a UK dad?
Yes!
Scotland sounds so much like the Pacific Northwest of the USA in so many ways, at least weather wise. As soon as the sun comes out, everyone is outdoors.
Yes! Annie has family up that way and we would agree with that comparison, certainly for the weather. Thanks for the comment.
Gym looks great. Will you be installing any mirrors?
Thank you! I have been going back and forth with the mirrors. I still think I want to. It will make the space feel bigger I think, just not currently at the top of the priority list spending wise. Fingers crossed though!
Stop and Shop in the Northeast U.S. has hand held scanners. They also have a mobile app that can be used to scan items as you shop.
Thanks for sharing! I wonder if that’s becoming more common.
Undershirt is the t-shirt worn by men underneath a regular shirt.
I think you made the right decision to move to Scotland. I live in NH and love it, but I think I'd rather be in Scotland right now.
Thank you, we certainly hope so. We have a lot of good memories from NH, some could say that is why this whole journey started! 🤣
I work with someone from Scotland who I can't even understand most times. Your accent is very "Americanized" and I can understand completely.
Hahahha! Yes, there are some very strong Scottish accents. I don't think mine ever started that strong so perhaps morphed towards American a little easier. Thanks for sharing your experience.
This is a great video. At my age, I know I will not move to Scotland, but it is my favorite fantasy
Thank you for watching! It's always nice to have those wanderlust fantasies.
Beautiful solitude! You took the roads less traveled, and it was delightful.
Yes, it was wonderful and we already can't wait to go back!
