A saying in the Navy from way back "Take an Englishman, any group of them, pour them into a ship and that ship will work and fight". Admiral Viscount Nelson came from Norfolk farming stock so had a slight advantage. Being an island nation water runs in our blood.

As a kid, when my parents drove me around in their car during summer, the front of the car and windscreen used to get absolutely plastered with dead insects. It is worrying to me, how when as an adult now, driving my own car in the countryside, there are so few insects splattered on the front of my car. We have really killed off a lot of beneficial insects, with our pesticides.

That was a lovely video. We first visited the Broads ten years ago and fell in love with the place, so much so that we have bought a share in a syndicate owned motor cruiser, so we now spend at least four weeks each year cruising the Broads. Our fellow shareholders include an American couple who worked over in the UK some years back and who now return over at least once a year for their Broads boating fix.

Although previously a Londoner I now live amongst the Broads, my wife and I still do the "tourist thing" from time to time. I first visited to Norfolk Broads way back before Man landed on the Moon in 1969. One WEEKS boat hire cost my Father £7 for the week, that is Mom, Dad and SEVEN CHILDREN, so you can imagine it was it big boat. We covered all the rivers that were possible to navigate and really enjoyed it. We must have because we returned every year for a weeks boating until I left home at 16 yrs old to work in a nearby town, too far to travel daily to work. If you and the family enjoy it as much as we did it may become a habbit with yearly returns for some Peace and Quiet relaxing on the water. Tony in Essex

@@DaydreamersBarn Oh YES we kids loved it as it allowed us an extra week off from School, I finally stopped visiting with my family when I joined the Military in 1976, but the family continued for many years. When I left the Military in 1980 I lived abroad for about 10 yrs then returned to England and Mom and Dad were still enjoying Boating Holidays, but this time on the UK Canal systems. In 1990 I went to live in Gibraltar for about nine years before once again returning to England, but after my first English Winter for 10 yrs I found it too cold up North where the family lived and settled in Essex where the Winters are much milder. Last year my youngest Sister bought here own boat on the Norfolk Broads that she now lives in all year round. I still visit Norwich from time to time to Photograph the Falcons that Nest on the Cathedral Spire approx 250 to 300 feet in the air. Once you catch the Boating buf its hard to get rid of it, but some try the Canals just for a change in Scenery. Happy Boating Adventures in the Future, Tony in Essex.

Fantastic for us young UK people we used to hire a boat for a week and a cruiser with our friends - then go into beccles horning lowestoft and norwich and even yarmouth with the bars and nightclubs so much fun - travel on the water for a couple of hours and then tie up have a beer and to eat in a pub go a few more hours rinse and repeat in the english summer such a good thing to do. Great choice and so many memories of wroxham broad and the beautiful village of horning. kind regards from Thailand and more importantly glad you enjoyed it as much as we did over numerous english summers

I'm so pleased you enjoyed your day on the Norfolk Broads. The area is truly beautiful, although in summer it can be very busy on the rivers and moorings can be hard to find.
I first visited the Broads around 1968, when, as a boy, my parents took me on a pleasure boat trip with Broads Tours, from Ranworth staithe, to Wroxham (where you picked your day boat up from). I was hooked then and I've been back many times since. Now I'm trying to get my granddaughters interested in boats and the Broads.
Hope you can visit again, for a week, or more and see the rest of what the Norfolk Broads has to offer. 😊

Hey there you also have to check out the Cambridgeshire Fens and in particular places like Wicken Fen which is being returned back to a typical Fen from medieval times with all the wildlife that entails because there was a massive decline in the traditional fen wildlife. Also places to check out around that area are Houghton Mill one of the only fully working Watermills left in the UK and also has a potential link to President Biden. Its near Huntingdon and St Ives too. Oliver Cromwell actually lived in St Ives for a while also Ely city and the beautiful place dubbed the ship of the Fens or Ely Cathedral. Then of course you mustn't forget the gorgeous city of Cambridge itself with the historical University Backs punt tour
The word "Fen" means it is an ancient Wetland area but these are navigable by boat also the best way to see these areas of you can get the time to do so is by hiring a cabin cruiser boat for a few weeks but they aren't cheap you can drive to each place individually as well though

A really interesting video, very well filmed .
As modern day motorists you probably haven`t ever thought about life before the combustion engine.
The choice of travel by land would have been horse, horse and cart or carriage, or just on foot ,known as `Shank`s pony'.
All of these would be comparatively slow but if you lived near water ,then depending on the weather conditions it could have been a better and faster option for transporting people and more importantly goods.
So as an island ,water travel especially by sea developed faster than other more land locked countries .
Hence Britain`s dominance in previous centuries ,especially the Royal Navy.

A friend of mine, now sadly dead after an accident with a car while cycling, had a large vintage sailing boat on the Norfolk Broads, (similar to the ones at around 31 minutes of the video) and we used to go down and sail around, I would crew for him, generally out of season, October to February, when the wildlife was undisturbed by the sound of internal combustion engines. At that time in late autumn, there were of huge murmurations of starlings in the evening before they roosted for the night, as well as kingfishers and other lovely birds. We often passed through Yarmouth harbour into the Southern broads as far South as Beccles, a lovely town, and sometimes sail up the Wensum into Norwich centre.

It remains to be seen what happens as sea levels rise. A colleague of mine in the late 60's and early 70's, never spent a penny that wasn't necessary but bought a lovely property on the Broads. I wish that that had been me. You have a lovely family but on this occasion, Collette looked stunning. Convert it to black and white and she could have been on a 1930's set. Very pleased to see you finally got to hire a boat at Wroxham and managed to get down as far as Horning. That’s one off the list I mentioned to you. Next..Europe? However, July and August is an expensive and busy time. Wait until beginning of September onwards when the kids go back to school. Normandy and the American cemeteries? Or, as you like history, maybe visit the numerous French Chateaux in the Loire region? Research Chenonceau, Amboise, Saumur and Chambord to name a few. If you want to see the Christmas markets, they start around the beginning of December. Montreux in Switzerland or Annecy in France, not far from Geneva are nice. If too late to organise this year, try next year from Easter onwards, but BEFORE July, when the French go nuts on holiday. Nice video…🫡

Just south of Wroxham is the site of the old RAF Rackheath airfield; the USAAF operated B24s from there in WW2. You would have driven right past it; it's just fields now but there is a long line of trees that marks where the runway was; the control tower still stands, and can be accessed from Rackheath industrial estate.
There were of course dozens of USAAF bases in East Anglia, and Norwich Library houses the 'American Library', which is a permanent exhibition and memorial to the life of US airmen that were based here during those times.

Locals may help me. At about 15.00 there was an old-fashioned looking sailing boat behind them. Was that a 'wherry'? 'Wherries' were the original boats that sailed on the Broads.

That is exactly what everyone's been calling them!! And recommending we take one out for a trip on the Broads. 🤍 Jess x

I see you found th Ice Cream boat, but you failed to mention passing George Formbys' old house which is on the Wroxham Broads (Beach Road) A beautiful 5 bedroom house. I believe it's om the market for just over £1,100,000, or thereabouts.

Glad you enjoyed the broads I spend so much time canoeing there and in the winter time when all the hire boats have gone is so peaceful with all the nature ,my canoe is 54 years old and called “ bloody boat “ because when I was first doing her up the wife would say that bloody boat is in the way again 😅

We did enjoy the broads. That is a great name for a boat. I love hearing how different ones get there names. Bloody Boat is a great one. Cheers, Chris

Hi guys. I have been watching your videos for some time now but this was not one of my favorites. To enjoy the Norfolk Broads at their best you should hire your own boat in one of the quieter areas of the Broads. What I saw today would have been one of my worst nightmares, following on in a convoy of tourist boats. I am glad though that you enjoyed your birthday treat.

We have looked into hiring a boat of our own to stay a night or two in the broads. It would be an experience. Hopefully we have enough time to squeeze that in. Cheers, Chris

😂 I'm so sorry Jess... But i have confession to make... I almost choked on my Coffee when i watched today's video a short time ago... It was when you first spotted the Heron @7:11... And sounds like you accidentally misspoke and said... "There's the Herring"... 😂 With a Herring being a Fish... And a Heron being a Bird... But don't worry though Jess... We've all done it from time to time... Or it's possible that it was your accent that made it sound like you said Herring... Either way it was funny enough to make me almost choke on my Coffee... ☕😂 But it certainly looked like you all had a wonderful Birthday trip out on the Waterways of the Norfolk Broads... I knew that you'd both probably end up falling in love with some of those gorgeous Waterside Properties... They look even better when the sun is shining... It's a shame that the weather was a little overcast on that day.
It looked like you all made some very happy memories with your family guys... Which i'm sure you'll all look back on with fondness at some point in the future... Just as i have with my own family in Norfolk over the years... It's also been bugging me for awhile now... Just who your daughter Colette reminds me of... And then i re-watched the RUclips channel "React" from several months ago... And there's a young lady on there called Vivienne... Who reacts to videos along with several others kids... Both Colette and Vivienne look like they're long lost Sisters... If you want to see just how similar they actually look... I'll put a link to the video in the comments section below... If i can't do that... Simply type into the search bar above... The exact title that you see after the arrow below... 👍 Thanks for taking us with you on your trip out to the Norfolk Broads Chris & Jess... All the very best... Cheers guys. 🍺 ------------> Do American Teens Know Iconic British Rock?!

It was a wonderful day on the water. We all made some lovely memories!
I will look her up, and Colette and I will get to see what you all are talking about. 🤍 Jess x
