I was so disappointed when you visited the Lake District, it was a horrible gloomy day and on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most impressive), I'd say you saw it as barely a 2. You asked us to guess what you call those signs, I'm guessing that you call them titties or boobies!!. 😚😛

I always found it quite a desolate and forbidding, inhospitable landscape, when passing through it in my childhood and teens. I felt temporarily suspended from civilisation, be it Manchester or Sheffield. Lol I,ve felt a kind of wonderment travelling snake pass, but never thought of it as straightforwardly beautiful or pretty, I.e, like a Constable painting or Vaughan Williams' Lark Ascending, Lol I enjoyed the video and seeing it from a different perspective, so to speak.

From comments you both made in earlier video's... it appears Chris's deployment will end quite soon. When you return to the U.S. will you recommend to your friends that they take a driving vacation to our small and humble island? But when you leave... I'll miss your videos. And II hope you will return again once more. LOVE :)

There aren't trees on the tops because at a certain height, trees don't survive. If you look at a mountain, you can see a definitive line where the trees stop, a bit like the snow line. As soon as it snows in the area. the Snake Pass is the first to close to traffic.

Snake pass is my favourite motorbike ride in the whole of England, there are equal rides in Wales and Scotland but nothing else in England beats it... I learnt a few weeks ago that the Country I was born in 53 years ago is roughly the size of Oregon in the US... The UK has a population of 68 million and Oregon's population is 4 million... it blows my mind, and when you see how densely populated the UK is, you find it really hard to believe that the UK is still 90% countryside, the city's and towns/villages only take up about 10% of the land mass. There are society's and UK legislation that protect old and existing footpaths and ancient track ways allowing the population to roam the land freely, and even now they fight to increase our rights to roam in the more restricted areas. So a heartfelt thank you to yourselves and other non UK citizens who come to our beautiful country and remind us of how priveledged we are to actually be able to live where we do, through your videos and reactions on your youtube channel.

Speaking from the ‘other side’, I.e. an English family living the US (I have driven the pass many times; I am a lancashire lad after all) once the elevations level out and the trees disappear, it reminds of the road to Devil’s Tower heading out of South Dakota. From Minnie, that was an awesome road trip…

At around the 8 minute point in your video, marks the location where my friend collided with a sheep which jumped out in front of us whilst descending on our road bikes, he was doing around 45mph, broke his pelvis and the sheep walked away, paramedics and ambulance came out to take him to the hospital, and for some reason the police arrived because of the sheep wandering in the road, not sure what they intended to do about the sheep, arrest it 😂. Nice video, good to see it from someone else’s perspective, living here we simply take it for granted.

My Son was in Uni in Sheffield for 5 years and the Snake Pass was the best way to get their from Liverpool, that aside, it is the only road I've driven that I thought I was going to die, Hit an extremely thick bank of fog at 60mph, hit the brakes and so, very nearly went over the edge. 60 mph was never a speed again. Snake Pass needs to be respected.

Trees are scarce above about 1500 feet in the UK. Above 2,000 feet they only usually grow in very sheltered locations to modest heights. Obviously the further north you go the lower the height that trees thrive at our latitudes. Trees also will struggle because of the poor, waterlogged, acidic peat soil in places like the peak district. Another big reason that trees don't grow are those white, fluffy mowing machines called sheep which eat saplings before they get a chance to grow. Deer also do this where they are common, mostly red deer in upland areas. Unfortunately deer numbers are kept artificially high by the estates in Scotland and elsewhere by feeding them throughout the winter and sometimes all year round. This is to increase their revenue for commercial deer hunting/stalking. Finally, a lot of moorland is burnt in late summer to encourage regeneration of the heather as grouse favour the young heather shoots. This also burns young saplings and destroys a lot of other plants and also kills wildlife. Again, this is done for commercial reasons for the estates' grouse shooting businesses.

That is the first time I've heard the dark peak (the gritstone moorlands this journey took you through) compared to California. And you passed close to the site of USAF B29 which crashed on those hills in the late 1940s and still always has a stars and stripes flying in memory of those who lost their lives that winter morning in 1948.

If you'd been getting eroded and weathered for as long as the old volcanos you were driving around, bits of you would be falling off too. That's probably why it reminds you of Cali, similar geological process formed a lot of there. The nearby Lake district is an ancient super-volcano caldera and Hadrian built his wall along the edge of massive horizontal eruption between crust layers, the top layers got eroded away.
