In this tutorial, we will learn two ways to create depth and add a sense of shape to your portraits. This process is essential if the skin begins to look too flat or dull. In the first part of the lesson, we will use the Lumenzia Photoshop Panel to automatically create Zone Curves using Blend-If, which is going to help us easily take control of different zones of Luminosity. In the second part of the lesson, we will learn how to do all of this manually, without the need for a Photoshop panel. We will use Curves and Blend-If, in general, to make it happen.

I swear by Lumenzia one of if not the best PS panel available absolutely brilliant.

To bring out highlights I use COLOR RANGE to select HIGHLIGHTS and then make a CURVES ADJUSTMENT LAYER with the mask and brighten highlights.
I can use Gaussian Blur to make minor adjustments to the mask and also use Blend If. Since I have all of these adjustments as shortcuts it only takes about 10 to 15 seconds to make this edit. You can copy this curves layer, invert the mask and adjust the shadows. Of course, trying different layer modes is always fun but NORMAL usually works for me.
