Yes. Seen the Dead and JGB many times from 76-88. I have no doubt Jerry would be in awe of this dude. Billy takes everything up a notch, his band mates are masters of their instruments. He owns this song here. Jerry has been my main influence on guitar over 40 years. But this is the best I’ve seen this song done by anyone, even the dead.
The more I hear Billy covering these old Dead songs the more I like him. The mandolin really elevates the whole performance. Looking forward to hearing more.
Yeah to bad he sold out got the 33 tattoo and pyramid.. You normies are morons.. Totally in it for the cash and you should research 33 and the masons..
Billy's on a whole different level then nearly all other artists today. Is there anything he can't do? He can continues to cover great dead tunes and yet makes them his own! Mad props to you Billy!
I think that Billy is on to something that we’ve never seen before. I don’t say that lightly or uninformed. I didn’t think anything would ever catch my attention and intrigue me like the Bands I grew up listening to and the bands I’ve seen over the past thirty years. This band is a real gift to the planet right now. I hope they play many years and continue to blow our minds. RIP Uncle Jerry…
He is a well rounded guitar player, he's been in my daily mix for a minute. He's got some sweet talent. Been the hottest thing I've heard in a minute. #1 in my mind at the moment.
Im a guitarist myself and have been since I was around 10ish. Always had extremely high aspiration and ambition regarding where my goal to end would be skill wise. And I find myself able to relate to him and his music so well as I lost a great many years to opioid/heroin/fentanyl addiction mainly but also along with many many other drugs as well. I'm only ok with responsible use of cannabis and psychedelics anymore. Exactly the same way he is now apparently I learned. I've picked the guitar back up and played ever since the very first second I was gifted a used Ibanez electric from a church friend, as I lost my 08 Gibson Les Paul studio all mahogany no finish and Taylor 314ce to my addiction. I'm 3 years sober this spring. Believe me, I'm DEFINITELY taking notes. I don't just listen to the music but I also have been watching him very intently, learning and absorbing it all as I watch. I loved the rig rundown video of him breaking his setup down and explaining it. He's also has very high attention to detail and consistent/picky with his playing guitar also exactly like myself. It's been very fun and interesting nonetheless.
One of the most exciting players, not only these days. Has got everything down from bluegrass to Hendrix, Garcia, Allman and back to Dylan or Jackson Browne. Blessed with tremendous gift.
The name "Billy Strings" is the perfect fit! He can play anything, with anyone while respecting the original artist, but also transforming these iconic songs into a whole new version of his own! There are not many musicians alive or dead that have been able to do this! 🔥💯❤️☮️
50 Years to the day of my all time favorite Loser performed by the Dead at the Hollywood Palladium. August 6th, 1971! Check it out. Billy Strings is just as incredible. Keep on rocking Billy!!
Billy and his bandmates seem to be turning into the "Grateful Dead" of the Bluegrass world, that's a good thing. Billy and his posse are good representatives of the current crop of young acoustic musicians whom we are blessed to have on the music scene these days. They are carrying on an American music tradition that goes back many generations. Beautiful mando solo.
Billy Strings is the truest musical heir to Jerry I have ever seen. It's a combination of both the playing and, especially, the singing. I enjoy Kadlecik, Mayer, Haynes, and Herring. I think they all are talented and "get it" to a significant extent. But this guy has the "it" factor.
Billy's vocals, guitar, band, and arrangements are all bona fide "Bluegrass." The "it" factor is that he is so talented and expressive in the same way Jerry was. His top-notch bandmates improvise creatively and comp so tightly! I've seen him bring it on electric with Billy and the Kids! I'm so glad Billy is getting this exposure and fame!
Personally I would rather hear Billy do Garcia than any of the others named. And I know Jerry would love this. One of the many classic Hunter/Garcia tunes. Keep them coming Billy!
Had the pleasure of finally catching him live last Fall at their first Philly night. He is the most brilliant entertainer I have ever witnessed. His playing and singing are utterly outstanding, as are his all-around presence, humor, and charisma. I left that show knowing I will be seeing Billy Strings live every chance that I get to for the rest of my days.
a mayers / strings band would be heavenly......... have they ever jammed together? any one know ? john mayer's lead electric guitar is certainly on par w/ strings work..... for pure power n tone... i vote john mayers
I have literally just discovered billy strings yesterday. I have to say this young man is ultra talented. Just loving everything I hear. his voice is one of those very unique and beautiful voices.
Billy Strings won the country music awards best guitarists twice in the last five years. You should check out Molly Tuttle ahe`s a lightning fast picker too and like Billy has won the country music awards best guitarists twice in the last five years
Wow!!! This is really, really good. Used to see Garcia at the Keystone 1974-1976 and this reminds me of that magic. Hope to catch this genius sometime soon!!
I've said it before and again, the absolute perfect voice for the particular song. I d heard Jerry sing it while playing but don't remember. Only sudio but it was all that was needed. Love the song so much, I get teary eyed listening to it, also, Billy hitting every single note, cant get enough of that. Puts me in mind of Keller Williams sometimes.
Yeah, man, keep your fingers dry, you seem to hit every note. Ive always dug this song and Yall perform it beautifully. Im always think about Jerry during the Summer months.
If y'all go to Any Bluegrass Festivals you will see how this develops! It takes time, dedication and a Quest for PERFECTION!! He hasn't stopped playing for 10 solid years!!
From a huge Garcia fan, this is fantastic as Billy and the band pay homage to the great Jerry Garcia and the Dead, thank you Billy!!❤❤❤I love this music, RUclips kept recommending you, last fall(2023) and when I saw Wharf Rat of course I had to click. I’m so glad I did, now I get to see you at the Gorge in Washington.
billys phrasing on the songs melody during his solo is simply phenomenal. billy is a confident player and that makes him an exceptionally great player imo. i have always felt in the short time i have been checking out billy that i constantly finding myself praising billys guitar phrasing. he is great, and wow im not sure who that is on the mandolin but he is pretty awesome and the tight clean tone is good too
Saw him a few weeks ago in Marshfield ma... I could see him a thousand times and still miss something AMAZING like this. Life is short but his music makes it sweet. He even has me picking now 🎸👆
Ok this is a generational talent. MORE DEAD songs PLEASE. His guitar playing is epic and perfect, he's nailing the 1/16 lines right on the nose. epic voice. This kid is MAJOR! God bless him)
rock solid billy strings! you too, billy strings' band, y'all are a fine inspiration to a guy learning his stringed instruments. it's hard to please the old deadheads that have their preferences set for decades now...well played sirs. just the right amount of homage and originality
You might want to replay dead on the rocks from July 13 this year, or maybe Grateful Mahalo if you think us old deadheads are set in our ways. This old deadhead will be at Billy's album release in Buena Vista Colorado in September for 2 nights of Strings and camping. You youngsters better stay home and let us veterans do this right .
His voice and the bands voices behind it is absolutely perfect harmonics lol they are meant to play together I’m absolutely blown away at how well they compliment each other when playing
Thank You so much Billy. I see a small glimpse of just the physical muscle pain as you drop your neck arm as to sling the sting away, just to go straight back on the neck. Thanks for everything you put yourself through to please us.
Yeah, that was pretty good. Love hearing these old Grateful Dead tunes.. covered, by some very talented bands, bringing their own flavors to the music. It's a real treat. Thanks for sharing.

Best thing to happen to music in a long-ass time
This dude has SOUL! Can’t be said of most new bands in “the scene.” You can’t fake that, you either got it or you don’t.
Agreed!
Best I have heard in decades, if the "scene" or better yet the tradition is in his hands, we are blessed.
