Grateful Dead - Loser (Philadelphia, PA 7/7/89) (Official Live Video)

- "When Loser was 'on,' the song was sung with conviction and passion, and the instrumental segment built to a massive crescendo, one of those moments that indicated the band was having a great night. In the late 1980s into the early 1990s, there were several versions of Loser that fit this bill. The Albany rendition from 3/24/90 gets a lot of the mentions, but this one from the previous summer is every bit as great." - David Lemieux
Directed by Len Dell’Amico and co-produced by Len Dell’Amico and GDP.

Thank you! 😀⚡️🙂
Yep, for me, the '89 Riverfront Coliseum "Loser" was the template that Jerry would use throughout that period until reaching a climax at Knickerbocker 3/24/90. Such a powerful tune!
Love it❣️🌹🌞🌺👌Jerry so ‘easy’ he does it.. First time hear this one..2021!! True.. Great❣️
@@GrahamSkardon I was there 3/24/90 absolutely my favorite loser
Indeed Dave!!
"I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines" My favorite line ever!
Same 🌹
Greatest band that ever existed
And the greatest live band!
Hands down
Doesn’t matter they were in bed with the CIA and MK Ultra on the Haight. They can jam tight.
Gratest! But this is subjective and there's some really good competition, like the Stones, Nirvana/Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam. All-time though, GD's probably my best!
So very true!
If I could only listen to two bands for the rest of my life, Grateful Dead would be both of them.
I always felt like Brent was the musician Garcia needed in the GD. Sometimes it looks and sounds as if the two of them are just playing as a duo, and everyone else slides in around them. A great team.
The way they look at each other when they're locked in together says it all. I find myself rewatching any time Jerry makes that little smile from some move Brent made, it's always heartwarming to see and incredible to listen to. What a band.
I was a tour kid. And I kept up even into the post JG work and when I look back on it all, the times with Brent were my personal favorites, because of him being him. Jerry being Jerry, it all just meshed and vibed. Mesmerizing..
Always thought the same thing. I was at this show it was one of Brents' best.
Hornsby was like that with Jerry too, but Brent another level obviously
@@Jason1717171717 definitely!
There’s a reason this is fire. 87 to Spring ‘90 is one of the best eras. Jerry is doing fills left and right. Bobby is right behind with some of his best work. We haven’t even started talking about Brent yet.
FAQ Our equipment improved tremendously during the 80's and 90's. I remember mixing recording and remixing reel to reel tapes from the 1960's and 70's onto cassettes.
If Brent doesn't O.D. then Jerry doesn't start using again, IMO.
Couldn’t agree more!
My favorite version so far. I can say that listening to this and other songs by the Dead help me get through some of the tough times dealing with cancer. Thank you gentlemen
I’m sorry
100%
Stay strong Corey Sine!
Hope you are feeling well
Peace and love
I said it when I heard it and say it today. 7 7 89 is Jerry's greatest solo I've ever EVER heard..
Jerry and Brent together are so awesome I could cry
“Too much of a good thing is just about right”.....
Jerry Garcia
Weir singing "I need a miracle":
I need dynamite to get me up.
too much of everything is just enough.
In too much of everything is never enough
Man I love it when they come back in from Jerry’s solo hard and heavy!!!!
Word F'n up
ITS SO FRICKEN SMNOOTH IVE ALWASY LOVED THE DEAD BUT THE LAST FEW MONTHS I AM REDICOVERING MY COMPLETE LOVE AND AM IN AWW OF ALL THE INTRICASSIES AND LITTLE THINGS THAT ARE TRULY REMARKABLE
i think we can all say thank you
AMEN
i love how clearly you can hear phil during jerry’s solo it’s so nice
Such a great song. This version is easily one of the absolute best examples of the Grateful Dead's awesome music. Beautiful.
This song would probably be average in the hands of anybody else. But Jerry knew how to bring out the soulful elements of it. And Brent was a perfect counterpoint to him.
It was all emotion I feel it every time I play it. Which is almost every day for a year ✌️
Billy strings does a pretty good job with the song 🎵 👌
@@ELECTRIC_WIZARD_ did he play it at red rock recently? Thought I saw that wicked sick
No true I kill this song.
Please check out Billy Strings Loser! Out of this world
There’s something about seeing Jerry smile. It makes me very nostalgic, almost to tears. Touring with the Dead were some of the best days of my life.
All these years later it still allmost brings a tear to my eyes When I think of Brett especially when I hear I will take you home. ( so buitifull , so full of love ) I just don't have the words. Rip Brett and Jerry the dead have brung me so much joy. Nothing but thanks and gratitude. ( please forgive my spelling ).
I feel the same
😢 i listened while crying after my Dad passed.❤
I can't even listen to it 😢 It kills me.
RiIP Jerry and Brent.
As a side note, any time I lose at the casino, this is my “go to” jam.
Catch that inside straight bro
Come to Daddy on that inside str8 😅🥳😎
Absofuckinlutely B 🤑 Money
Ripple B 🤑💰 you been doing this DEALGODOWN!!!!!!
4:03 Jerry gives Brent the “this solo is gonna be fierce” look
The way Brent and Jerry looked at each other. Are all relationship goals.
I love watching Brent's Leslie speaker spin on the other side of the stage.
If I was having trouble hanging on to my sanity , I would just keep my eyes on those speakers spinning and it would recenter me . They were mesmerizing.
Yeah man Leslie's are mesmerizing
Why did he put it on Phil’s side?
Brent could hear himself better thru Phils harmonics
He was a master of the organ
One of my favorite Grateful Dead songs!
It’s technically a Jerry solo song (from his first solo album from 1972). One of my faves too!
I often wonder if I knew how good this show was when I was there bc I’m 59 and it still sounds great
It was...but I was a bit too spaced...🤪
That harmonic he does one of is beautiful such a touch he had. One of my fav losers. And. Bobby is nicely in the mix
One of the greatest rock songs ever written.
This was actually a step down from the Buffalo show days earlier 7/4/89. That was the best show of the whole tour IMHO. Best deal ever!
This song brings tears to my eyes!
Jerry at the top of his form. That guitar solo shines!
I concur. Fire
Likely my favorite including his JGB work..
Top of his form my ass.🙄🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️👎💩
@@spanqueluv9er ...it formed your ass..??! Powerful indeed...
Def at the top of his game in summer 89
I was 16 and that place was crazzzzzzzy.
Tickets were 16

I was at this show. Such a great time.
Until that pothole of SOTM ..
The older I get the more I realize, w their clothes and instruments, Weir and Lesh were so "uncool" they are actually 2 of the coolest M fers to ever stand on a stage.
Love that! Felt the same about my father the older i got.
Was born in 93'. So all I have now are cover bands and videos. Interesting perspective you have. i look at videos of Bobby with his page boy he-man flow from
Phil too! Look at that getup. 😂 But he's a BOSS.
@@chrispyle2942 That’s not how it worked at all. Trust me, Bob’s1989 self was very confident/content with this outfit because it was very common for West Coast “athletic” males circa 1989. I lived those years.
No gimmicks for sure. You know I never thought of that about them but one of 5he reasons why I'm a fan.
chills everytime I watch and listen to this run! Brent and Jerry so damn in tune with one another. Amazing crescendoooooo!
I saw this one. One of my favorites but this version was a showstopper!
I'm finally starting to realize 35 years later this Philly show was one for the ages. I was at the vaulted 7/4/Buffalo show but man they were on at Philly.
Saw them many times in Philly and this was the best one I saw
FUBAR !!! Rip Jerry und Brent ..I am 62 living in Deutschland for 10 jahre..american :) Just smoked a bowl hahaha not even 12 midnite yet ....I saw Jerry 16 times befor he died ..Thank god ..just got a pig pen tattoo in september ..Ciao
Jerry’s like a psychedelic Mozart with that hair. Love ya Jer. Fuckin miss ya man.
what a great show! One of my favorites, Brent and Jerry on fire
These "All the Years" uploads are completing wrecking my world.
It was a great show. Very warm day and a jammin crowd.
I'm proud to say I was there with my best friend...we fondly remember these golden moments...
Just realized I was squeezing my cup so tight it was bending
Makes me sentimental- as a tear drops down my face😢
I was here back in 89. Last show at JFK. This was one of many 😮 moments that night. 99° I think? Nightfall and breeze kicked in.
Wayyyyy way awesome. Superb.
Funny Bumping into you here
If I had 3 wishes. It would be to see Jerry live even once. I was 6 when he passed. 😥 jipped.
I can tell the Queen of Diamonds by the way she shines.
4:00 Solo perfeito!!! Um dos maiores da historia do rock.. Perfect solo!!! One of the greatest in rock history.
Me encanta que hay gente en otros países que aprecian los Muertos. Mejor banda de la historia de estados unidos, con creces.
You guys are so good playing that instrument. Many more people to inspire and keep going in life. God Bless you.
hahaha Jerry looking over at Bobby like "what the fuck is that man?"
Jerry shredding a distorted guitar solo on this song during these few years (late 80’s early 90’s) is something so special. Nothing the man couldn’t play.
What a treat
She's Shinin' Bright! 🌞 🤪 ❤
What a solo on this! I'm not a huge fan of the latter era in live Dead, but I've gotta admit that 89-90 was smoking hot for that era of the Dead. Jerry looked and sounded healthy and this show is real nice.
Jerry was a lot a thing and most of all a nice guy, but he was not a great guitar player.
That was the beauty about the Dead, you could talk about the early seventies 72-73 , of course you got to mention the 77-78, I happen to love early 80s dead, but 89-90, that band was absolutely on fire... every component of this band at this time is just superb.
@@thornil2231 why do you say this?
Phil is driving this thing from beginning to end, his sound at 5:25 is like Justin Chancellor on WfM2
Love this period in the deads history.
It's an obsession but it's pleasing 🤗
Hi
Just happy to be able to listen to it here
Wow a Lesley. I stepped on the bus 1 September 1983 at Park West Utah. Phil bounced Little Red Rooster off the Canyons. I saw Phil in Berkeley at Tower Records. One of the nicest people I have ever met. He recalled that Little Red Rooster. I have seen various shows featuring Jerry and Merle Saunders. Bob Weir catapulted me from the Keystone to Berkeley as Bobby and the Midnights.
Just wow! The soul Jerry had on this day (and most others) was so ever present and just beamed into the souls of everyone in attendance. This version is way up there!!❤️❤️❤️
If you have to struggle that hard to win- you will always lose. But that was quite the struggle session we had, huh? And its not over yet. I bet she starts screaming again within a day or two.
Performed on my wife's 12th birthday... Perhaps this is how I can influence her into liking this song more. 🤔
God I hope so
My favorite greatful dead song
The old man still killing it
Find someone that looks at you the way Jerry and Brent look at each other 😍⚡🔥
Classic Jerry! God rest his sweet soul!
What an absolute blessing this band is to the music world!!!
My first show !
Jerry's looking over at Bobby, giving him the "that's a whole lot of wawa filter you got going there," look.😂
the best time of my life seeing the dead
My favorite performance of loser. Absolutely awesome 🤘🤘🤘jerry solo was so damn perfect
Absolutely 💯% 💘
Sliding in on that A is so iconic. Fantastic tine
Was there!! I love seeing the good ol days before stupid cell phones!
'Hot Damn!" Jerry's on fire.
This was an excellent show, with one of the best "losers", in my years touring!
...Of course, my seat wasn't as perfect as this video.
Great times! ✌
This is what you call a Masterpiece
This sounds like a totally different tune than the 1980 version. Such a beautiful piece ❤ RIP Brent and Jerry ❤
Honestly just can’t say anything other than I love this song
My favorite show of all time. Music in its purest form right here. ⚡️🌹💀
Brent always seems just overjoyed to be there, playing this music with these particular guys. May he (and Pig, and Jerry) rest in peace. I saw this iteration of the band in '80, at the outdoor Lewiston show that seems to have become legendary. Levon opened, and since there's audio of the Dead's show floating around I'm wondering if they recorded Levon's excellent band as well. Gotta take a look.
That show was the last time I did acid, a fitting farewell to that particular vice...
Can just now watch without poofin up tears. Miss those days sooo fucking much.
This is a good song I love it and Jerry’s jam makes me want to play with him
I was there. 8yo starry eyed tie dye kid. If only I knew then what we all know now. One love
N
NJerry’s a Masterpiece!!!!!!
Jerry rippin guitar one of the best losers ever band just perfectly in sync
Such a great tune
Look at Jerry and Brett play and sing , FUCKING UNREAL WHAT A GREAT TIME
I was at this show....this was the show the had JFK condemend......2 nights after this show The Who played 2 nights next door a Vetrens Memorial Stadium.....what a Fucking blood of Fights the was.....The Violence was Glorious!!!!!!
There's something special listening to this particular song live at the Aladdin Theater in Las Vegas NV on spring break.
Jerry, did a great song, when he pick this one song too play & sing... He would not been able to do this song without God!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!
Jerry was only 47 here. He died at 53. I just turned 52 a few days ago. Jesus, he died young. When he died I was only 26. I used to think 53 was old. Fucking A, not no more.
Yes indeed 😑
Yeah but that was a HARD 53 years.
Awesome Show!!! Bqm boop bee boo bop bap!! Total Love!! I quoted this in ma 88' yearbook .... lo,just to officialeyes the Real...Boom. Love ,upppp All Ones!! 😍
That guitar solo- takes me to another planet!! So damn good.. I love this song. So well written.
Jesus. Utterly sublime. To think, until my 30s, esp during high school, I loathed them or was totally indifferent. How much I missed in the process!
The dead make sadness sound so good. True blues.
Beautiful! Love it all. Bobby’s guitar licks are frosting on the cake
4:07, most psyched crazy grin of all time from Jerry.😁😂🥰🥳🌹
Garcia, man. My man was tearing up new ground right to the end. Just listen to that solo. Holy shit
Oh what a glorious day it was !! ;-)
Indeed my friend
Jezzum crow!! I'm late to the party I guess!! I'm blow away.. Jerry is unbelievable!
Who could possibly dislike this video
Goosebumps every time
This show/tour/year was right up there. Thanks for sharing David.
So much conviction in this performance
Beautiful
