"In June 1984, the Grateful Dead performed Dear Mr. Fantasy for the first time, at Red Rocks. A year later, also at Red Rocks, they added Dear Mr. Fantasy by including the Hey Jude coda to the Traffic classic. And then we waited. Finally, in winter 1988, the Dead brought back Hey Jude, again attached to Fantasy, and it would remain this way for a couple of years, until Brent left the building in July 1990." - David Lemieux

They also formed close and trusting bonds over using dope and coca together, writing music and lyrics while getting each others input and wrote and played really music together (and separately. They really bonded and Jerry loved Brent. Especially as a friend and musician. He was crushed when pig pen departed and felt he was irreplaceable which I totally understand. Brent kinda seemed to sweep Jerry off his feet musically and with just kindness only to loose him too . Extremely sad when you think about it as Jerry was the 3rd note in the triad. I’m so glad Phil , Bobby, micky, Billy and the other ones kept o. Going strong almost another 30 years!
That’s dedication both the music to fans!
I definitely understand why people believe in curses ir look to the supernatural to explain events in lived.
Life is truly fragile so please, don’t forget to tell the people you live that you do ❤them vand why!
      Blessings good people!

They were like Star Crossed Blood Brothers. Sometimes a puzzle piece fits perfectly. The loss of Brent was so huge, losing any member of the band let alone the guy and talent that was Brent. Jerry was obviously the biggest loss, not to quantify, but Brent would have to be at least equal to the loss of the others.

Tonight I watched it streaming...yes I am from Massachusetts... I had to work. Couldn't attend the show... But this was the 1st time I've ever watched live... Any show... And It was almost... Better than being there... Because of the filming... Live comments etc...

June, 1984. I always wanted the boys to cover Dear Mr. Fantasy, one of my favorite songs, but figured that was only a dream. I had just survived a bad car accident in April, had my broken jaw unwired a few days before leaving for Morrison, CO. My girlfriend and I camped out in Monument Valley and Rifle Falls, CO. on the way. It was a bucket list trip. On a beautiful Rocky Mountain night the boys were jamming after a liquid Playin' in the Band and I heard a note or two... my ears perked up... another note or two from Jerry... I went "Oh fuck!, I can't , noooo" then another and I start getting crazy others around still hadn't heard it. Then they broke into it and the place went crazy. A night and adventure I will never forget... the first Dear Mr. Fantasy by Jerry and the boys.

This was an incredible show. Sultry hot. Fire hoses for the crowd. I think Los Lobos opened for them. The Dead opened with Playin’ > Crazy Fingers, so…a very good start, and all the band engaged, listening to each other, and having fun. 1989 might very well have been the apex of Garcia’s technical prowess. Listen to how he reaches for everything and attains it flawlessly. He does this consistently throughout 89, both with the Dead and with the JGB. Archive has the complete Healy super matrix of this show. Listen for yourself.

What was wrong with 80-86? Not sure why you’re dismissing Brent’s early years; particularly as that’s when you could catch the band in smaller venues. Hartford, Lake Placid, Syracuse, Cornell, Ithaca, Buffalo, Augusta (Maine). Jerry was fine. Touch of Grey and the explosion into larger venues meant the end of shows where you could go where you wanted. Kind of miss those intimate years more...
