- Some songs we hear alot, for example add jingles, ring tones or background music from a film or television program. However never really pay much attention to the fact that you know it or think about the fact that someone had to sit down for hours to compose it. Here is a collection of multiple news themes from all 5 free to air channels in Australia:Ten, SBS, ABC, seven and Nine. Most of them you should know from either past or prescent but I bet you had never taken the time listen to them as you would with music on the radio or MP3 player.
I hope you enjoy or atleast feel a bit nostalgic. :D

There really isn't much wrong with the 2005 ABC theme, it just had the misfortune to follow one of the best themes. It's a perfectly good uplifting and classical-style news theme.

The 1985 ABC News theme and intro sequence blew my mind when it first aired...it was epic, there was nothing like it at the time.
6:30 That has to be one of the most news-like themes ever, it begins with alerting people we have important news for you, then it moves onto the suspense of what’s happened today, with a hint of interesting news tidbits, & then it finishes off with that’s all for now but we’ll be back with more tomorrow.

The Channel 7 theme has elements of 'Superman and 'Star Wars'. But then, it makes sense as John Williams composed them all.

Agree. I still get a tingle down the spine with the long version on ABC radio news in the morning before AM.

I hope free to broadcast TV channels that provide very *localised* content always remain relevant & appreciated by the viewing public, including the all important news services with their *reassuring dependability,* which I think provides for a degree of *social cohesion.* Also, I think the tendency of some people to not watch the news because they’re just sick of all the misery out there that no one seems to be fixing is a *serious concern* for society, because you need people to *give a damn* to fix it.
I loved it when ABC went back to the old 50's theme in 2005. Such an epic trumpet!

As a kid, I watched Seven News exclusively (It used to be called Southern Cross Tasmania until 2018 where I live) and I hold quite the soft spot for the 2002 theme. It was more exciting and intense as it built up and added a slight drama to the news reports you were about to watch, something thats been lost in the newer news themes

Wait a minute...The 1987 7 News Theme is "The Mission" by John Williams. That was also the NBC news theme in America.
NBC still uses it.
Channel 10 by far the best. They consistently put a lot of effort in having an epic, classy and well produced theme.
Ten Eyewitness News theme in 2015 is one of the greatest themes to ever be on Australian television.
7, 9 and 10 could all be Simcity 4 tracks.

the 2005 ABC theme sounds like the sort of theme you get on the 7:30 report. the 1956 ABC theme rings a bell to me.
I find the 1985 - 2005 ABC theme very catchy. is there anywhere I can download that theme. apart from that I like the 9 news theme
LOL the 2008 version of the Channel 9 theme sounds like something from James Bond! My personal favourite has to be ABC Channel!! Always sounds so majestic.

At least in the 50's the propaganda sounded stylish. I would go off to a war in Europe for a far distant colonizing monarch listening to this and I would dress up in my finest to do it!

I'm trying to find the Radio Australia sports theme from the '80s. I used to hear it on the shortwave. It had fanfare at the beginning like at the racetrack then kind of a chugging sound. I heard it during America's Cup in '87 in Freemante.
The ABC Majestic Fanfare and the 4 Corner's music... Best NON John Williams music out there.

+Cosmik82 Why oh why did they move away from the Majestic Fanfare? Admittedly the 1956 version here is rather pretentious, but it was a great news theme. Still is for radio. Here's hoping they never switch.

They are a syndicated network. Our 7 is your , NBC your CBS is our 10 and your PBS is our SBS. :)

I did have a feeling about 10 and CBS purely because of David Letterman's Late Show.
There would be serious argument over whether the 80s or 50s ABC tune were the best, then some new POS came on, is that the current shitty tune on ABC? How could any think it even remotely compares to either of the older versions?

Does anyone know what the name of the ABC News Radio weather music is or where I can listen to it? It's the music that plays when an ABC News Radio announcer reads the weather forecast for the capital cities.
@Conor McKeough I don't think the *weather* music is the Majestic Fanfare. That's used for the intro to the *news*.

The trumpets in the 1985 seven news them were later added in to the 2016 news theme, although re-worked a little bit.
