I just stock my favorites. I figure if there is a tornado, earthquake or bad ice storm I'm going to want favorites. It's the little things that make me happiest. Grilled cheese and tomato soup, biscuits and gravy, quesadilla jalisco, banana bread, blueberry bread, apple or cinnamon danish, etc. I have all the ingredients in stock. Lol.

Hi Jessica! You are so much more organized than I could ever be! I do my pantry like you do...cans together, etc. My pantry is not all that big, but I don't live in Alaska...lol! All my things are done in dozens...like 10 or 12 of each. I love that you and your Mom go shopping together. I lost my Mom in 2008, and I miss her every day. Give your Mom a big hug from me, just because!!!! You are so fierce and focused!! Big hugs and many blessings, sweet one!

once a month we give to a local churchs food pantry. we have been very blessed so we like to give to them so they can bless others. We send them food for three meals a day for at least a week. i try and get as many fresh items as i can and always add some treats so the children (and the parents too) can have something special.

That's a great idea! I love that. I got some soups that are like princess or kids shapes. Nothing like a sick child that needs to eat. Simone said to make birthday boxes for parents. Like a pan a cake mix birthday candles. I love all the ideas you all come up with. Nothing like thinking of helping a parent brighten a child’s day with a treat. Thank you so much for what you do.

Another way to build a pantry and what's worked best for me is to write things on the shopping list as they're used. Ex: made tuna noodle so I put Mac and cheese, tuna, and can of peas on the list. To build the pantry I'll get 2 or 3 or 4 instead of just 1 to replace it. I know we'll eat it because we already have! A couple things are required for this though 1. Cook (pretty much) from scratch 2. Cook with shelf stable items as much as possible. Just a different spin on things that I don't find talked about

Great idea. We spent few weeks everyday. giving to our grand boys school daily giving box. We had pasta & bread fir supper so We donated pasta , sauce, bread kits. We had soup so we donated soup and crackers, we had rice and beans so we donated rice and beans kits. Made us think meals are important. So we do 4 basic meals a week then 2 more complicated lol . So we remember those basics to donate and buy and how many we need to do those meals and donations. Such a good way to remember your meal supplies.

My husband's been out of work for 9weeks, and I'm unable to work, so having a well stocked canned pantry has been a life savor for our family of 4. Its desperately in need of a restock, but our budget is barley able to keep fresh milk for the kids in the home. And living in California means prices are ridiculously high. Keeping a reserve of even a few months of foods you eat is so important, and not just for major disaster situations, anything can happen to anyone. Thank you for sharing your stock! And a very big thanks to sharing the love and donating to your local food drives. Every can counts!

Sue...just a friendly hint. Before you buy any more rice and beans, round out your long-term storage with pasta, flour, yeast, cornmeal, salt, sugar, instant potatoes, oats, and fats like olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil...and butter if you can store it in your freezer...I'm just thinking aloud. You know what your family will eat and what you already have on hand The goal is, though, is to go beyond rice and beans...and to have seasoning/salt to cook your foods with.
Also...curious...what varieties of beans (and rice) did you buy? You don't want to only have 50 lbs of pinto beans, for example, and do diversify with several varieties, and the same with rice. You want to have a way to "doctor" up your beans so they don't taste the same way every time you eat them. That will get boring REALLY quick!!!

Your thought process is "Spot on"! ! ! Again, I really enjoy seeing your basement stock of foods. What a pantry! I do not really have a pantry anymore, as I am in a rental. So, I have shelf units that my son built me.....one of those is in the sliding door closet, as you come into the house.......then another is in my room, and that one holds my personal tools, empty canning jars, lanterns for emergency use...things of that sort. Then, I have a double door unit, that holds some canned goods. Actually 2 of them, but a smaller one is in the kitchen area., and it is my go-to pantry. Sounds confusing, I know, but, its actually quite organized. I miss the basement, that I had when all my children were younger. I had the freezers down there, and many shelf units. I did can back then, as I had quite a large garden. It is very rewarding to open a jar of pickles, or string beans, knowing that you canned them yourself. I used to go upstate Maine, and buy 100 lbs of potatoes. That was good, for my family of 11. Now, there is just me, and one of my daughters that lives with me. She is 54 and has fibromyalgia quite badly. It seems like we take turns not feeling well. Anyhow......when my children were little, I would bake 6 loaves of bread at a time....that recipe was wonderful! Thanks so much for taking us down in your basement supplies. I really enjoy it so very, very much. PS I have some SPAM in my absolute EMERGENCY pile of thing.....I am not really a fan, but with eggs, I can tolerate it! Have a great week, Bev in Maine

In Arizona, we have Fry's but haven't experienced any shortage of tomatoes. In fact, I have so many I've donated a bunch. The shelves are full at our local Fry's. Only a very few items I can't find. An example is Best Food's Mayo. I like buying the small jars because there are just the 2 of us and we don't use mayo very often. I ended up having to settle for a large jar. But better to have some than none. Love your Costco hauls!!

Stale water fix to “freshen it up.” When it comes out of the faucet, it usually has some air in it. It’s sounds too easy, but if you just take two glasses. Put water in one glass and pour it back and forth between the two glasses, you put some of that air back in it. It makes a difference. It seems silly, too easy and like it wouldn’t make that big of a difference, but it does. 😊

I organize mine by type...so pasta & sauces together, baking together, Mexican ingredients together, Chinese ingredients together. It works better for me and is how I categorize my meal types. I have about 100 ingredients on hand and have lots of them. I just try to streamline it all. I don't make a recipe that has a one off ingredient to keep costs down.

Often times we don't realize the amt of people shopping at your town 60k can mean divided by 5 store sources. Canned tomatoes are often bought in bulk August - Feb peak buying times And shop both times a day as online and even restaurants are buying in the same stores. Often Costco only has 4 types or less. Those like kroger etc have 6 types with one shelving 150 cans a week. You are competing with 60k households. Buy these things every trip, as the sales are 10 for 10 or 10 for $ 20. One person buys 24 or 48 of each. It's not a shortage according to your stores it's a buying peak time and alaska it's snow falls you panic and buy Staples for weeks

Like when I go get milk I should buy just 5 or so cans and stick the item slow but consistently. You gave me something to ponder and an idea to adjust fir sure.
