I appreciate your explanation of long term food storage....on most of the channels no one really talks about using their long term. They give the impression it stays on a shelf until the zombies come. I think that is why people buy stocks that they typically don't eat. Obviously, as you mentioned, you have no choice, but while you have a chance buy what your family eats.
Exactly you get me. It could be that we have come from so little. In my brain I can’t understand why I would have a year of food (I don’t have that yet) but why I would and not be able to eat it or have the freshest coming out. Just because you can eat something that is 30 years old, it’s not like you would want to. I’m on a tangent. But just think you eat whatever you eat today and starting tomorrow due to some event you need to switch snd eat food that’s been stored for 30 years! Ummmm no thank you! Lol
The flat iron is brilliant, I learned the same trick with Mylar bags only we used a clothes iron and a flat piece of wood on the edge of the bucket. Same principle only yours is much easier. Learning new tricks every video you post
I like those red buckets for the pinto beans, it reminds me of being a little girl at girl scout day camp everyone brought their own bucket like that to sit on and store things inside or sometime you just bring the lid and leave the rest at the campsite during something like sitting on the ground to listen to a speaker
There is a recipe for bacon cheese potato soup it's yum. With bacon so high one pack does two makings. I use my blinding wand. Have bread but I want left overs but nope the grandkids want more and everyone. We love bean and bacon and a large can I add a teaspoon of chili powder and kids load it with Ritz crackers. Haven't learned how to make them. But I do enjoy how your family home is coming along.
I stumbled upon your channel last night and now have watched all your videos. I love everything about it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I hope to see more in the future. Ps. I really do have a life, just sick so was able to watch them all. Lol. Have a fabulous day
From other Alaskans, I notice that they put up bars or use bungee cords across the shelves , especially for the glass jars , to help keep earthquake damage to a minimum. Just saying!
You are so right! In the new basement pantry update. I said that we are ordering like a bungee net to go across all the shelves. And we secured them to the wall also. But you are so right we must protect our stuff
Oh my goodness you made my day! Are you from or still in the Caribbean? What part? My husband is such a rancher guy it took years but I got him to go to the Bahamas. And He loved it. We dream of one day having a shared place like with family there. And we want togo for Christmas.

We have the same canning system. LOL I love your basement and wish I had one, but we've converted a bedroom into a storage room for now. I pretty much do the same thing as you by sealing my beans and rice in smaller amounts that are more manageable. It just makes more sense. You're coming right along! It's a big project to start over again! God bless and Happy Easter!
Hi Jessica my name is Hasina from Newark ca just a tip when you store sugar put couple calves soo ants don’t get in I buy different type of flour n rice I put bags in white trash bags
Hi Jess... I personally consider for myself as long term being 3-5 years. I never buy anything with the intention of putting the it away for many years and in case of emergency. Although I do buy 12 mylar pack box of milk from LDS. I like having various shelf stable dairy options on hand always. I use to only store for the winter as my grandparents did. Working all summer caning, vetc to store through winter into Spring. After the shut down 2 yrs ago I stretched that to a full year of ALL food and supplies for 1+ year... Now the past few months have upped that to 2+ years, LoL. I never store anything I typically don't eat... As the rule goes.... Only store what you eat and eat what you store.
I agree wholly!!! I slowly and building beyond what we have. I remind myself we made this big nice to be able to produce and become more up close and personal with our food. You know growing, hunting fishing raising. So on. So building up a stock is so important.
I love your short term vs long term storing systems! Wondering if you made the short and long term labels? Love them. They would make a great product to sell online.
U got a good set up won't have to worry about your family.. Nice basement, don't see them too often.Secret to keeping pure cane sugar (white) in buckets house 1 lb bags of rice with prick holes in the bag. This does not harm the rice and keeps the sugar from hardening. I use Three to four bags per bucket in layers between the sugar. Not tried to bucket brown sugar, keep those in the plastic bags they come in. I have a jar that keeps the brown sugar soft and have heard you can use cut up apple to soften brown sugar.
You really motivated me to get my stores organized. I bought 2 shelving units, then had to add 3 more. Now we know where everything is and how much we have. It has made harvest and canning season so much easier. Thank you 😊.
Just joined your page I live in the north east of England and I don't really have a long term stock of food but if you don't mind I find it interesting watching how you do it x
I have taken to using my long term storage as a back up to my regular food in the kitchen- it's the only way i can keep up with the expiration dates - when i open a long term =i get another one to replace in long term. Now that it's only me, certain things i got tired of eating so i stopped stocking what i no longer eat. Certain things i have on subscription with amazon ,that are delivered monthly, every 3 months, etc.
Nice video, very helpful! WE stockpiled those canned meats..ground beef, shredded meat. Oh my we cannot stand the flavor or texture. I do not know what to do with them. The ground beef with a lot of taco seasoning tastes like taco bell, but we don't like it. Each can at the time cost 7.99. I wish I would have not panicked and only added 1 to my grocery list to trial.
