This was exactly my style. I grew up being a state champion here in California, but I had the worst technique because my dad never critiqued me. My elbows were always down which gave me the worst arm pump. I could do one hot lap, but then my arms would be so pumped that I could barely hold on the remainder of the race. Arm pump was the biggest factor of me giving up trying to go pro (along with tired of getting hurt). 20 years later I am now getting back into all the sports are used to play, and I’m learning how much better I could’ve been at every sport if I had the proper technique. Excellent video. I wish I had content like this when I was 16. All I had was a VHS Gary Simics video lol
Same here dude! Sucks to understand this after all these years, then find out what you did wrong all along . But hey we are never too old to learn and as long as your body is good then you should ride and try to learn new things. After 14 years i started riding mx again, but damn i found out my body position is not the best either! Arms fell off after one fast lap or 2 normal laps. I found out my upper body is way to far back which causes the bike to get away from me, leading to pulling my arms = arm pump. I’ll try some new things this weekend 💪🏻
So it was your father's fault? How can anyone become a champion if their father doesn't tell his kids that his riding style is wrong? I'd probably call CPS for that.

I don't agree with that, and Ryan as an instructor should not agree with that either. The only thing I know of where feeling, (emotions) can come out of us with no thinking behind it, is music, (not lyrics, just the music), and people who live their lives by feeling instead of reason, lead messed up and irrational lives.
@@EarthSurferUSA I disagree with your statement about music. There’s a lot of thinking in it. There also seems to be a miscommunication about what I’m calling “feelings”. I’m a drummer. You are so right, I found out years ago it''s much easier to bend the hips and try to keep the knees in the same position. You also have to learn to use your bikes suspension. Only when the impact is to hard you have to bend.
Yo yo! I’m just a weekend warrior if I’m lucky sometimes only once a month as of right now..Watched your last video about bending at the hips first I was so used to just manhandling the bike around the track…so these past two weeks that I have got to ride I have made it a point to practice that the whole time on the track it has made it so much funner feel a lot more flow around the whole track huge difference! Always fun and motivating to see improvements!
One thing that has worked for me is keeping my body in the neutral zone before executing a move. Standing straight up vertically or laying down horizontally changes the moment of inertia.
Great advice. Thanks Ryan. Wishing you the best from Utah. If your primary hinge is the knees, then your heavy, center mass is moving all over the place and hard to control. Easy to get knocked off balance when your 100 pound sack of flour known as your abdomen is leveraging back and forth without the hips. Pivoting at the hips keeps your mass centered and balanced and the knees and ankles are there to keep everything lined up and ready for the next bump or divot.

Hey Ryan man: What do you think of the boots today for a safety issue? I am not talking about their protection, but the lack of feel to the shifter and brake. I went to a more "adventure" boot, (really like a top MX boot of the 80's), so I can feel the controls. I am riding again after 20 years off, and there is a lot of stuff today I have to change, (like lowering the bike), because I don't like the new directions. Very informative thank you for this, a few weeks ago I broke both ankles casing the main step up at LACRMX out here in SoCal. You say not to ride flat footed and I was working on that but it ended badly for me . I was riding on the balls of my feet with proper positioning of my body and this still happened to me? What do you think caused this?
Human bones can only withstand so much force. Casing it off a big jump is a lot of force. No matter how perfect your form, if the G's are more than your joints can handle they'll break.
There are many way this could happen - did you gas it when landing? Was it a bit uphill? Were your hips tucked or back rounded? Is your suspension too soft? There could be a few issues. Also you land hard enough and there is nothing you can do from the force of the impact. We do a very dangerous sport as I have been hurt from small crashes or not crashing at all. Exactly 👌 The elbows up or down is great to test with push-up, with elbows out or elbows near your body. Most people will find elbows up way more easy, and therefore figure out they have more power with less effort when hitting whoops and bumps 👌

@@Andy-co6pn That doesn’t make a lot of sense. Safety equipment isn’t just for injuries caused by the rider. In fact, many of the most serious injuries are caused by other riders. Proper technique and safety equipment are two separate categories. Not for Ryno I know. I take safety gear advice from others. Everyone gets a choice of what to suit up with.
@Erik Bredt yeah I get that if you have a shot knee or a buggered wrist then it's, no brace /no ride. That isn't what he talks about though. He's talking about improper technique ( that may/may not be caused by bracing ) being more likely to result in injury
Ryan, I think I figured out how guys like Lechien and JMB got so fluid and fast, but are known for not training off the bike, (they just rode, "sometimes" if Ronnie felt like it later in his career). Can it be this simple of a concept, (but easier said than done)? When they got tired, they figured they were doing something wrong and fixed it.

I know myself, when I am riding very very well, (Ya know, when you get that feeling that you are part of the bike and can push it as hard as you want.), I am not getting tired.
⚡This was the MOST UNHELPFUL self proclaiming garbage I've seen to date on MX tips. Left you hanging that Ryan knows something you don't...
Dressing like a homeless guy isn't helping your words Ryan. IT MATTERS.⚡🙄👎👎👎👎
Well, I just watched it and did a few laps on the track in the back yard, and knocked off a average of .114 seconds off my lap times.
That is the difference between 10th and 1st in a SX race today. :)
Stay positive. #chargelife
Get on a bike and show how its done? Would like to see some riding from the rhino
You got it!
@@RyanHughesMX cant wait! 👍

Is that a russian flag on your arm? I hope it isn't
The arrogance in the way this dude speaks 😂 like he’s never almost been paralyzed from his own tech multiple times …
Only positive vibes! #chargelife #iamryno
