The Macro mode on this camera is handy. And 28 mm is wonderful for everyday photos. The only thing that I miss from other cameras is the weather seal. Hopefully one day there will be a waterproof GR.
Macro mode is something I haven't used very often! Kinda forgot about it! However, I did pick up an 21mm ultrawide converter! Have a Love/Hate relationship with that right now 😅
@@JasonVong I rarely pick up my bigger cameras after having my GR3. It's not the fastest lens, and I often wish it could zoom like rx100 vii. Sorry if I bother you, but since you are a professional, I wanted to ask you which is the best camera between: sony 6400, sony 6300, sony zv-e10, canon r50 and canon RP? Thank you.
The one you have with you. It doesn’t matter as long as the body does what you want it to do and you like the output. In part, that is why there are so many different cameras. Clients don’t care what camera body you use if the results you deliver are pleasing. Photographers can be such snobs. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Nice video! Yes,I would like to see more Ricoh GR iii videos. I have it and it goes with me everywhere. To have an APSC sensor and IBIS in a camera smaller than my phone, that’s remarkable! The only thing I wish it had is weather sealing. That’s it! Thanks!
I am convinced! I am about to pick up a used one in mint condition. Hope there is no issues. I am long time hoping to get a X100V and even X100F but the price went really up for weird hype reason. Your Jpegs really look great and of course the composition as well. Thanks for the video!
I bought GR3 street. I’m on the fence on the compact camera. Probably need to use it more and understand it better. I feel the screen doesn’t display the quality of the photos well. But once I load the file into my computer they look a lot better. I enjoyed changing color to blk/wht. This camera has pretty good latitude ti bring out the tones. BTW, are your sample photos processed or straight from the camera. They looked good to me. 👍
GR cameras will get dust on the sensor. It is inevitable. Costs about $200 to have sensor cleaned. That said, it's the best camera I have ever used, just wish it was weather sealed.
I'm still struggling whether to get a GR III or IIIx. i like to shoot well, street photos of course but i also carry my EDC items (like knuckle, pouch, patches, knife etc) out and shoot as well. I'm still thinking 28mm might fit me more. Or i should wait for GR IV releasing next year? 😅
I just ordered the 28mm, because with the sensor at 24MP you can easily crop in to 40mm and not notice a difference. So rather have the information, and crop, than feel you cannot get further back was my idea ;)
The GR3 has the image quality I had always looked for in a pocket camera of a similar size. The only thing I would like is a screen that can be flipped 180° so that it can also be used to take selfies.
I bought it last year to replace my iPhone "camera" so I don't run out of space and I love to edit and my fuji is just too big sometimes for my daily use with my toddler and the reason I barely use it was because I could not get it to focus!! omg pretty much everything you said here was my reason for not using it as much as I intended to. I started using it again this year because it saved up for it and I feel bad not using it 🤣 then I actually love it when I got clear shots!
Jason (or anyone else!). Do you have any info on when the next model will come? I really love this camera and strongly consider of getting one at some point...
Could you do a tutorial with this camera on how to do those highlight weighted metering where the photos are really black/white in the shadows and light?
I would like Ricoh to bring the built in flash back, it’s handy for urban exploring to capture graffiti in shaded areas or the textures in a pedestrian tunnel. I keep the old Ricoh GXR A12 for that very reason. The lenses on the Ricoh/Pentax compacts are super too they just don’t get the credit for their optics that they deserve. I’m not a total fanboy though the macro AF in particular sucks but I rarely use that
For me I still prefer the smaller form of my RX100, its more reliable AF and of course that pop up eVF. When I want better Bokeh and low light I just bring out my RX1R.
The right tool for the right job. Cost is important. Image quality is important. Flexibility and weight may or may not be for you. The choice is yours. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Hi Jason, I am travelling solo and would like to kind of replace the iPhone selfies with self-portraits with some bokeh (that still kind of gives away say that I am in front of Eifell). I am already planning to buy the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 lense, and this will be my only prime. I will be using Sony A6100 APSC camera. Which prime lense will you recommend?
I have had this camera a month so let add a few things -Dust on the lens every second time -Didn't work on a mountain despite being a travel cam -No weather sealed -Hugely expensive and fragile -No a point and shoot, the basic settings are fucking horrible and you always need to go through an intense process to take one shot but by the time you go through that process the shot is gone -Firmware updates like Windows 98 -No good auto mode, P mode is trash -Can't shoot clouds unless you underexpose then edit to right exposure HATE this camera, willfully leaving it without a case and chucked in my bag atm as I have 0 respect for the camera. If ti did break it'd just be another special Ricoh thing. I wish I got the RXMK7 Time and labor intensive as well.
Yes, we know in advance of purchasing this body that the battery life leaves much to be desired. Easy solution. Buy a couple of extra generic batteries or three. They are cheap. They are lite. I do this for bigger batteries that last longer than the GR. Without a battery with stored energy you are carrying around a brick. Just like running out of memory on a card. Same solution. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
"Be one with the 28 mm!" hahaha I agree. This is a great and fair review. Great job! This camera reminds me of my Minolta AE, which I use for street film photography because of the same reason you listed. Its not as bulky as my x700, so its nice to carry around JUST in case a moment arises. I believe that your comment about the display being off is what sparked this comment in the first place. That's because in film photography, what digital display??? So that's why this camera is some-what of a "film photographer's" digital wishlist. The creature comforts that are just enough help with capturing the photo quicker, but not taking away from the joy of "wanting to get the shot right the first time" vs taking a billion photos to delete later in the sort through Lightroom.
It really comes down to the TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY YOU WANT TO DO AND HOW YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL WANT TO EXPRESS YOUR PERSPECTIVE TO THE WORLD. sOOOOOOOooo many photographers want to criticize what you should photograph with. I own many cameras for SPECIFIC NEEDS. I learned that I like using my Sony cameras when it comes to Surreal, portraits, or marketing value. Griii/ x or Fujifilm is like my daily dairy camera, where I want to share my life. I also use film cameras, mainly when I want to detach from the world and just focus on my surroundings. Photographers who have to convince another photographer what they should shoot with, isn’t really a photographer. They are just tech heads rather of the principle of why a Photographer, is a Photographer . JEEEEZZZZZUUUUZZZZ!!!! Other than that, I just want the next GR model to be weather and dust sealed. For that price, I need it fully protected .
I feel like the gr have a lot of potential . The small and compact body can be the perfect replacement for a phone . I hope for the gr mk4 they up the video specs , and also have mic inputs . This would make the gr a perfect everyday video/ short form content device . And I hope they bring the manual focus wheel from the og gr1 .
The battery required would be too big to support video features. They should just keep it as a stills camera. It was and always should be, for this form factor. There's enough "content creation" cameras everywhere and it's going to be hard to beat the Fuji XS-20 no matter what they come up with. I rather they try their best to shove a full frame sensor into the body.
Snap focus takes some adjustment. The autofocus works. It is slower and less confident than brands like Sony. Good enough though. For me anyway. Besides the snap focus I also use the touchscreen for focus and then automatically take the picture. Two focus systems are better than one? Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Criticisms acknowledged and true. The Ricoh GRiii is a KISS camera. Can’t live with the choices the engineers made for you? Don’t buy this light collection machine. You are right about the dedicated market. Street and EDC. Who else would put up with the shortcomings of this camera? Not in the dedicated market? Don’t buy it. There are lots of other cameras that you can choose. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
No weather sealing, terrible autofocus. Kinda terrible when you consider that a) this is supposed to be a everyday carry point and shoot camera, b) how much these things are going for and c) that there is no manual focus ring to compensate for the shite autofocus (unless you reprogramme the one control wheel, which makes it a pain to shoot in priority modes).
I use my iPhone 14 Pro with the Dazz Cam app. It's a solid app with many camera emulations (photo and video) I easily achieve a low-fi film quality with the Dazz Cam camera and lens emulators. Tho I've been itching to snatch something like this GRIII or a Fuji
If you're in the RICOH GR ultimate group on Facebook, a user on there posted their recipe which I used heavily in this video! Chrizz Ocampo, look him up!!
I thought it was grest too until i saw the iphone vs richoh comparison. In bright light its almost impossible to tell the difference especially if you just posting oj insta which most are doing.
I was hoping, given the fact that the Fujifilm Cameras (especially the X100V but also the X-T) are very popular at the moment, that other camera manufacturers will try to make something similar. Nikon kind of did but they did not go all in. OM System is also a contender but I don't know whether we will see a new Pen Camera of any kind. Sony had something similar with the RX1 but it is in a different price range and long discontinued.
@@thomasa.243 A full frame Z-F would be a huge hit for Nikon. They seem to be waiting till gen3 of the Z6/7 are out but I wonder if the hype would have died down by then. They could simply chuck a full frame sensor into the ZFc and sell it next quarter if they wanted to. Not sure if OM system still has any life in them. As a Olympus SLR owner, I kinda wish they would revive some old vintage designs.
@@professionalpotato4764 well, maybe not the next quarter 😅. There is a bit more than just changing the sensor but yeah... The Zfc feels like they dipped their toes to see how it goes and when successful, they will move to the next step. So, I hope for the next step 🙈. OM System, I mean, a Pen E-P 8 or whatever it might be called, paired with a 14mm might be a hit, especially in Europe and Japan. They were never as popular in the US as in Europe and Japan unfortunately. Plus, you have the option to change lenses as you progress.
I don't expect Jason Vong audience to understand the GR. They're the same people who would say "My Sony can do more than a Leica". They won't get it until they do.
Is that really true? Sounds like hyperbola. I know that I don’t care what brand other shooters are using. I select my gear based upon what I want it to do and the cost. For example, I don’t hate the people using bodies with a red dot. I don’t hate the red dot bodies or glass. It just isn’t right for me. If you purchase gear you should love it. Just don’t make me buy what you love. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
The GR3 is such an amazing camera. Amazing image quality out of a tiny body. It has a lot of drawbacks, but the only one that really bothered me enough to lead to me selling it, is the handling and ergonomics 😇 It’s really not bad for a pocketable camera, but I personally need a more tactile, manual shooting experience to inspire me and keep me motivated… for that I think the best compact camera on the market is still the LX100II/D-Lux7, but those aren’t really GR-level pocketable either 🤔
Completely agree with you. I love the images and portability but miss the tactile feel. I have three other cameras and always have this split feeling about Ricoh. I keep wanting to sell it but then I take it with me and love all the positives. Never a perfect world. Great comment, you summed up well.
Sorry you didn’t enjoy your GR. No camera is perfect. No camera is for everyone. For some people a 1” sensor will break the deal. As Jason said, this camera isn’t for everyone. Enjoy your camera. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I'm super into a light setup with a fast 28mm and the magic it works for spontaneous snaps - but I'd prefer to have a bit more flexibility in the body's features and use something like my A7C. One of my favorite combos when I was shooting M43 was the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 on a body with crazy in-body stabilization like the EPL7 or OMD EM5ii. Unfortunately the FE 28/2 is uninspiring; I might pick up the Sigma 28/2 C, but I hope we eventually get a FE 28/1.8 G for great weather-sealing and autofocus or a 28/2 II pancake revision, but it might be that Sony already considers that niche filled by the 24-40-50 primes.
My GR never overheats. I turn the camera when not in use. As a result, the battery lasts longer. This camera has a quick turn on. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Nice video! Yes,I would like to see more Ricoh GR iii videos. I have it and it goes with me everywhere. To have an APSC sensor and IBIS in a camera smaller than my phone, that’s remarkable! The only thing I wish it had is weather sealing. That’s it! Thanks!
haha @ 2:37 "I don't have to think about oh how havy the camera is weighing me down" 😁
I am convinced!
straight out of camera with custom recipes!
GR cameras will get dust on the sensor. It is inevitable. Costs about $200 to have sensor cleaned. That said, it's the best camera I have ever used, just wish it was weather sealed.
I am using the nisi adapter and nisi filter for that, bought from Amazon. I love it.
Does snap photo mean zone focus?
Damn, didn't know this camera had hate! I'm still on my GRii and I love it to bits!
This is by far the greatest travel camera ever made.
I’m not a total fanboy though the macro AF in particular sucks but I rarely use that
Out of the topic here, which light-stand are you using behind you?
Manfrotto Carbon Fiber Nanopole!
For me I still prefer the smaller form of my RX100, its more reliable AF and of course that pop up eVF.
When I want better Bokeh and low light I just bring out my RX1R.
Can you share the recipe you use?
Which is better?
Sony fe 600mm f4 gm oss
Sony fe 200-600mm f5, 6-6.3 g oss
Or that the only difference is the lens aperture
The right tool for the right job. Cost is important. Image quality is important. Flexibility and weight may or may not be for you. The choice is yours.

I have had this camera a month so let add a few things
-Dust on the lens every second time
-Didn't work on a mountain despite being a travel cam
-No weather sealed
-Hugely expensive and fragile
-No a point and shoot, the basic settings are fucking horrible and you always need to go through an intense process to take one shot but by the time you go through that process the shot is gone
-Firmware updates like Windows 98
-No good auto mode, P mode is trash
-Can't shoot clouds unless you underexpose then edit to right exposure
HATE this camera, willfully leaving it without a case and chucked in my bag atm as I have 0 respect for the camera. If ti did break it'd just be another special Ricoh thing. I wish I got the RXMK7
Time and labor intensive as well.
Where do you all find recipes for the GR series?
Finally!! Someone that doesn't cry about the battery size/capacity. Thanks for your review.

I had the GR2. Focusing and the screen were hopeless especially on bright sunny days. Even to upload images took forever.
I need a small camera like that in case I get robbed
This might fit your style!
Any decent camera store in Tokyo that you go to?
Are you going to drop the film simulation/recipe :)
I haven’t really heard anyone say they hate it… sure it has it quirks, but what camera doesn’t?
Couldn't agree more Jason *from Canon, Fuji, Olympus and Ricoh user
Sir please tell me pros and cons if I use full frame lens on aps-c camera ?
Brother please kindly review Xperia 1 m5 camera I can't wait to see it🙏❤
It really comes down to the TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY YOU WANT TO DO AND HOW YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL WANT TO EXPRESS YOUR PERSPECTIVE TO THE WORLD. sOOOOOOOooo many photographers want to criticize what you should photograph with.
Zero chance they will put serious video features in it… completely defeats the purpose and the battery form factor is too small anyway.
i struggle with the snap focus ;(
Snap focus takes some adjustment. The autofocus works. It is slower and less confident than brands like Sony. Good enough though. For me anyway. Besides the snap focus I also use the touchscreen for focus and then automatically take the picture. Two focus systems are better than one?
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
It's pricey and not for everyone for sure. No zoom, takes it out of the hands, along with price, from all but a dedicated market.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
have owned a GR IIIx for a while, other than battery life, all are not consider as compaint, BUT, battle life is the reason that I let it go.
For the way I shoot it’s the best camera I’ve used … so much I have the original GRD, gr3, gr3x and gr1v
I'd love to have one if it wasn't that much over-priced and comes with a visor.
Which film recipe is your favorite for sunny days??
If you're in the RICOH GR ultimate group on Facebook, a user on there posted their recipe which I used heavily in this video! Chrizz Ocampo, look him up!!
The coimments I have read concerning the dust problem puts me off
I thought it was grest too until i saw the iphone vs richoh comparison. In bright light its almost impossible to tell the difference especially if you just posting oj insta which most are doing.
A Sony version of this camera would be great.
I'm bothering them for an RX1R III...
@@JasonVong Good luck with that. A cheaper Leica Q or more expensive Fuji X100.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I don't expect Jason Vong audience to understand the GR. They're the same people who would say "My Sony can do more than a Leica". They won't get it until they do.
Nobody hates the GR. They hate that people love it so much.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
very honest
For battery, just bring a USB-C mobile battery charger and you'll be fine.
Returning my GR III... I had a 1" 20mp point and shoot and it's enough for me!
Sorry you didn’t enjoy your GR. No camera is perfect. No camera is for everyone. For some people a 1” sensor will break the deal. As Jason said, this camera isn’t for everyone. Enjoy your camera.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
yes
People just want to pay xx amount of money and expect xxxx amount of performance.
I know I do. It is called a bargain.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I can say the only reason i hate this is because i can't buy one.
im sorry
Did they really ran out of stock? I was just referring to my lack of budget. 😂
@@alwayne01 Amazon looks like they have some stock. But Adorama and B&H are out!
The 28mm F/2 is def due for an update!!
" Why Do Some People HATE It " Because they bought a Fuji x100 and are now jealous because it's way too big and doesn't fit in their pocket.😉
I don't want more GR videos. I'm not trying to buy one!!!😅
Love the images I get from this camera but don't call it a pocket camera. Put it in your pocket and you'll end up with dust on your sensor in no time.
yes it sucks, ridiculously overprized
I agree. The little sucker is almost the price of some full frame cameras plus kit lens.
@@riverwalker2173At a 1000$?😅
What about Fujifilm X100VI?😂
coz this camera overheat ,,thats why i hate this
My GR never overheats. I turn the camera when not in use. As a result, the battery lasts longer. This camera has a quick turn on.

We need an update with the HDF now haha
only reason to hate it as the sensor sucking dusts
Ricoh will broke after a half of a year of using. It's normal for this camera. Don't listen bloggers about "cool small street camera"
Going strong 1 year in. Many others have used it since release, no issues. If you throw cameras around, you deserve to have them broken. I don't even throw "rugged" cameras around.
Haha, I have a better cam for 25€😂 … used
What cam exactly?
