I’ve been using the GRX3 for a year in rotation with my Q2 and a Fuji 100X 6. Beautiful camera with lovely color science Interested in this camera, and the Luminar filter. thanks for the great vid 👍🏼
Thanks for the thoughtful review. For me the big sticking point is that I already have black mist filters while the HDF build replaces the GR3x’s built-in ND. Yes, it stops being easily portable with the filter mount attached, but it’s more versatile overall.
Hey Reggie, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this camera! I got the GR III HDF two months ago and I'm absolutely in love with it. Your two negative film recipes have been a game changer for me, making the experience complete. 🤩
I just bought a ricoh gr III. I did the choose not to take the HDF because I found the effect was very annoying and not aesthetic in my sense with direct lights. It kinda smooth the photograph which is great but imo it really too bad with light sources. Also, i prefer a nd filter over it because I like to do ICM with my camera. ^^ Anyway, Im going to put GA-1 adapter + filter to protect my ricoh from dust, even if it is a big larger and not pocketable anymore (still very little imo), it look like the best way to prevent it from dust ^^' And then I could put any filter I want on it :)) good videos, as usual !
Great informative video, I own the GR3 and love it, I use both of your recipes on the Gr, I’m so glad that Luminar is now available on the IPAD! Love the fact that it’s not subscription based.
Thank you Reggie, been following you and using GR3 with your recipe for a while and wanted to change to GR3X, i really like the cinebloom effect and this model of GR3X HDF is perfect for me because i wanted to keep the size compact as possible
Filter wise, I find Cinebloom a tad too aggressive. For Black Pro Mist I find 1/8th the best or try a Glimmer Glass 1, anymore strength than these and its globally interfering too much. I think the GRIII HDF is doing a good job of keeping in line with that philosophy. You might also like the Tiffen Soft FX filters, they do more to reduce sharpness if that is what you're looking for. The thing I love the most about the HDF filter is the toggling of it on and off, so much better than taking filters off and on, and also that there is no ghosting from the filter as it exists behind the lens not in front. Honestly I think this is a very cool innovation from Ricoh here, I hope they keep with it. Be nice if they can work out a way to not lose the ND filter because of its existence tho...
Agree that you can put on a filter for the times that it's needed (via Nisi) is what I meant, the ND is super handy if you want to shoot during the day
The digital look / excessive sharpness is because the default 0 sharpness is misleadingly actually the 50% sharpness setting. -1 is the absolute highest usable setting, and -4 is no sharpening
Amazing! I’m looking to buy the HDF version but why exactly would you use an ND in this camera? For video? Or do you need in some ocasions to use the ND in very bright conditions? If you would like to use it wide open all the time, and a shutter of 250 is there any need for the ND? Thank you in advance
here is my take .. So..... here are Positive Aspects: Image Quality: Many users appreciate the quality of images, especially in black and white modes. The HDF filter is praised for its unique effect, particularly for those who enjoy a soft, dreamy look in their photographs. Portability: The camera is noted for being compact and pocketable, making it a great everyday carry (EDC) camera. Innovation: The ability to toggle the HDF filter on and off without the need to physically remove a filter is highlighted as a significant convenience and an innovative feature. and here are my .. Criticisms: Excessive Sharpness: Some users have mentioned that the default sharpness setting might be too high, which could affect the desired aesthetic. HDF Effect: A few users find the HDF effect too strong or kitschy, particularly in bright light conditions. There's also a preference among some for a built-in ND filter over the HDF feature. Autofocus: One comment mentions that the autofocus on Ricoh cameras, in general, might not be the best, which could be a concern for some users. The big Wrap up .. Conclusion: The Ricoh GR IIIx HDF is generally considered a great camera, particularly for those who value portability, image quality, and innovative features like the built-in HDF filter. However, it may not be ideal for everyone, especially if the strong HDF effect or potential autofocus issues are concerns. For those who already own the original GR III or other similar cameras, the decision to upgrade might depend on how much they value the new features like the HDF filter.
The ricoh is auch a pocketable camera. It looks like a perfect edc. Also ive been looking for something like Luminar Neo. I remember seeing it years ago but forgot the name. Anything that makes editing more seamless and easy is a win
Great video. Just having repurchased a GR3 with the screw on to mitigate dust ingress largely, I'm not in the market for a 2nd GR, but will be purchasing the cineblooms! 😊
The photos in this video are absolutely breathtaking! I gifted myself a Ricoh GR IIIx as a Christmas present in 2021, and I still haven't fully figured out all the settings. I've been photographing for quite a few years, but all my photos are just lucky shots with well-chosen compositions. I manage to take beautiful photos intuitively, but I'd love to delve more into the theory and understand how to apply the camera settings depending on the shot and my desires. I think that if I mastered working with my camera 100%, it would give me an incredible result in my creative approach to photos. Could you recommend an easy course or video for beginners?
Useful advice. I don't have any Ricoh GR series and have been on the fence about it (one of them) vs the X100VI, which is, of course, a waitlist situation as of summer 2024 (like, 5 months wait!). Still not sure. I have had earlier X100 models so I am more familiar with it and its output. I don't see that the HDF filter is entirely perfected because in one of your examples it looks like the camera plus Cinebloom is sharper (away from the bloomed areas) comparitively.
I have the camera and the effect is kitschy, over the top. They should have gone with half the intensity. I would have much preferred it if they had implemented a 1/8 or even 1/4 black mist type of filter. I'm experimenting with it to find the right balance in images that can benefit from the effect.
@@Reggiebphoto my x100f broke three weeks before a trip and needed a quick compact replacement, I was able to quickly order and receive the GR3 in time through the Ricoh website. For me the hdf was just a “oh cool I’ll mess with it”, and wasn’t a selling point really. I didn’t think I’d love the gr3 coming from a much different camera but I reallllly love the portability and speed of the camera from off to on, and of course the snap distance feature.
Thanks for the deep dive on this. I’ve been curious mist filters lately since they are all the rage. Nice to see Ricoh adding it in camera. Also glad to see about the luminar app. Removing dust from my photos is such a time suck.
I sort of want to sell my X100V for this build of Ricoh specifically. I already own an XT5 and that camera alone surpasses my needs from the X100V . I just want something that’s compact and less noticeable to the public. Any suggestion anyone ?
@Stop-All-War I don’t have one. I share my recommendations at the end: one must decide on the rendering that they prefer and the form factor they prefer.
@Reggiebphoto I appreciate that you can understand this cameras strengths and weaknesses not like other youtubers who boycotting the companies! Don't get me wrong Ricoh gr cameras have a lot of positive things but autofocus isn't one of them.
@glpro2696 yup, I’ve been very transparent about this, and the people will tell me snap focus is remedies this - but only if one can gauge the distance well and is not relying on indooor low light scenarios (because snap focus is not great in low light as the depth range isn’t as forgiving as f8 outdoors)
What's the purple strap? Couldnt find it at Clever Supply.

yup it's all about the tradeoffs. for me i wanted the smaller size. i still do have the CineBloom and adapter if i really needed that specific look.

I only have one negative film sim recipe right now haha. So perhaps they’re confusing the other one as being mine as well

Agree. The ND is more valuable than the hdf in the majority of cases, if you need it the nisi or adding in post is the go
agree with who?
Agree that you can put on a filter for the times that it's needed (via Nisi) is what I meant, the ND is super handy if you want to shoot during the day
Got it. For me, I’m not that into nds, I’d rather stop down.
Just wanted this camera to avoid post processing. Though those possible dust spots scare me off. Is it that widespread?
The digital look / excessive sharpness is because the default 0 sharpness is misleadingly actually the 50% sharpness setting. -1 is the absolute highest usable setting, and -4 is no sharpening
