- On April 30th 2020, service was halted from Gloucester MA to Rockport MA due to the failure of the Gloucester drawbridge which traverses the Annisquam River. Emergency shuttle busses were deployed, and it was unknown just how long the line would be closed. Since then, the track on this portion of the line has rusted, rusted and rusted. The ties rotted. And, people began getting used to a neighborhood without the constant whirr of a locomotive. But, as the years went by, the MBTA made significant progress on the bridge, and finally on May 9th 2022, a train crossed over the bridge for the first time in 2 years. The line opened for good on May 23rd 2022, and now, trains rumble into the the towns of Gloucester and Rockport once again!
Keep an eye out for an assortment of videos detailing the history of Rockport and the metro area. There sure are alot of interesting things to look at
Enjoy! - BBR
ZOINKS
Whoever said that you filmed the Readville switcher too much? Nonsense!
WAIT A COMET CAB CAR with an e-bell?!
Is that a 1600s ctc with a E-Bell?😂 lol
I seen videos of when the Boston & Maine run steam trains here then they would loop around the loop to have the steam locomotive in front when the line became running with BL -2 RS - 3 then the GP - 7’s until the RDC cars took over When the RDC cars took over the line the loop was only used for MofW equipment the Rockport freight house would store sand and MofW supplies when the MBTA stated getting new engines and passenger cars the storage tracks was fill with F - 40 engines with the Pullman coaches the FP - 10’s were stored there with the lease GO commuter rail cars sometime you would get a train set with a GP - 9 ( X - BN ) with RDC cars and X - Penn Central commuter rail cars that came from the south side then Rockport had a mix of F - 40’s with a mix of Pullman and rebuilt RDC cars
So cool!!
8:07 I agree with the statement. The 3Cs HEP drown out the 645 rev up sound
Facts
I cannot WAIT for the series on the Rockport Station series! I always loved it there! I love stations where trains are also stored, with multiple tracks, etc
Im glad your excited! The full series should be up late november/december, and a preview video this month
ayo what typa bell is on 1635 😳
Ikr, e-bell
Sweet vid! Cant wait for the series! I’m a huge rail-historian so I’m very interested in the history! :D
Glad you enjoyed! And thank you, im excited to make it!
Definitely not abandoned. Out of service
Yes I know, I forgot to change the name back from the actual title (the one you saw was me just messing around with names)
The Rockport branch is absolutely gorgeous!
Agreed!
I would be interested in the history of the old crane that the Rockport terminal. I once saw it being used decades ago when I was about five years old. The sidings to the crane were removed years ago.
That freight building was used by the local lumber yard to store bulk goods not that long ago. You might contact Jay Smith to get more info.
Well youll be happy to hear that on december ill release my rockport history series, called the relics of rockport!
Do you know why In the north station sets of cars why there are only one double decker per set ? Compared to sets from south station with more than one double deckers
That is because:
1: less ridership on the northside, double deckers prioritized for south side
2: all the south side double’s have automatic doors and all the northside ones have non automatic doors which are only compatible with northside locos, meaning less double deckers
@@BostonByRails thank you
Great video! That curve you like to shoot from got brand new composite ties, the first in the system, for testing to see if they are worth installing elsewhere.
Oh i know! Im doing a whole video on them soon! Keep an eye out!
I live next to the Rockport And Newburyport Line!
me too
nice
Great stuff thanks for sharing! How much freight is shipped to Rockport on the branch? Panam or Mass Coastal?
Abandoned is a bad word… maybe try suspended or deactived?
Yup, i forgot to fix the title to the real one i had, the one u saw was me just messing with ideas
@@BostonByRails they riped the railway and replaced the wooden ties with concreack ties

nice video its nice to see that the rockport line now gets trains
Yea!
Have you seen any graffiti of the bluejay and racoon cartoon Mordecai and Rigby? On the tracks near Blackburn circle in Gloucester
At 3:10 , you misspelled Nugent stretch as Newgent stretch.
Dang it!! I ALWAYS do that haha
Have you guys seen any graffiti of Mordecai and Rigby ANYWHERE in Gloucester near the tracks?
That was always my favorite line. Rockport is such a jewel.
what day will you railfan here
Awesome video!
What was the nature of the drawbridge failure? And how many trains got trapped on the north side of this bridge?
Heres the way it happened: on a weekday an inbound passed over the bridge while surveyors were inspecting it. When the locomotive on the inbound went over the bridge, the support beams sunk 6 full inches into the mud, and they shut the bridge down immediatly. Luckally, this train was an inbound so zero trains were trapped on the north side of the bridge
@@BostonByRails Good thing they didn't have any remaining in the layover yard in Rockport.
Yea, that wouldve been a problem
That was an amazing video and awesome narration too I enjoy watching your videos
Love the emd f40
