We actually run the readville switcher over the GJ at least one round trip a day. Weekends aren’t as frequent but trips on Saturdays and Sundays do happen.
My chat question from last night if it was not clear: a North Station cross platform transfer from Downeaster’s last stop to west/southbound Amtrak (via GJ to Framingham Worcester Springfield Hartford New Haven…Washington) was floated by a rail advocacy group last year. I wondered about your reaction. Great presentation last night for BSRA; thanks.
Im glad you enjoyed the presentation! And, that would be so cool, i see what you mean now. That would make so much sense, and I hope they would actually do that. Thanks for the info!
I’m from England and I recently visited Boston on a little holiday, I was fascinated by the MBTA network as it is so different to what we have in Britain. Just stumbled upon this channel whilst looking for MBTA videos, really like this channel and just subscribed. Keep up the good work! 👍
Great video! I work for the Northside Commuter Rail as a Train Dispatcher, always cool to see how our work looks like in the world. Sent you a note to the Gmail with a couple of details you might find interesting!
10:53 he’s not counting down the number of cars until he clears the switch, he’s counting down the number of cars until his train is at the home signal of CP 3. Since it’s a shove move, the conductor has to give radio instructions to the engineer to ensure they stop before the signal if the signal isn’t permissive for them.
Okay, so I always wondered about these off-the-grid rail lines used by T commuter trains. But two questions... when you say moving trains between North and South... do you mean between T commuter lines that run out of South Station vs North Station? And also, why is it called the 'Readville' switcher when it doesn't appear to spend much time in Readville... unless that's where it sleeps???
For question 1: yes, it transfers equiptment between the south station and north station side 2: it doesnt go to readville station, rather it sleeps at the the MBTA’s readville yard which is just off the fairmount line in readville (you can find it on maps)
what do you know Reedville station - there was Pan Am fright through there now that CSX took over Pan Am there's no more fright ? - and why are the T trains so dirty
The primary reason we don't do it is because the T doesn't pay for the working facilities to do it. They have way bigger money concerns then paying to keep the wash running.
Basically: Instead of using the grand junction the switcher goes all the way to worcester station and goes down CSX’s worcester branch line, it then comes out onto the fitchburg line through ayer hill yard, from there it heads to BET via the firchburg line
Nathan is going to be explaining the switcher operations on his death bed
Umm girl what about me
Its a way of life

Each Readville switcher is different and it's so hard for the non-bostonian railfan to catch that I don't mind the multiple videos

Keolis is a French for-profit with shareholders, they don't want to spend the money to clean the engines and cars

What route do they use when the Readville Switcher route needs maintenance?

Friday Saturday & Today MBTA use 1119 to substitute Cape flyer
Iconic !
Awesome!
Looking at those rusting beams on the highways, doesn’t look very safe.
Agreed, they need to fix it up
All those dumb passengers thought it was their train.
Exactly, I mean, what are they to know haha
