The Readville switcher is what’s known in the Boston area as “The Readville Switcher”. The Readville Switcher also has various nicknames such as The Readville Switcher, The Readville Switcher, and The Readville Switcher.
Just had my first encounter of the Readville Switcher zooming by Lansdowne to the shock of bemused out-of-towers! It instantly reminded me of this video and I had to explain to them that it was the old shunter!
Interesting that Canadian Units have full cowl bodies but American ones don't. Never really understood the logic since cowl bodies can't see anything during backup moves. Does give you more space inside to move around but what is the advantage of full cowl bodies?
Unfortunately, it runs eandomly and is unperdictable. It runs on the back of in service downeaster trains and usually crossed the grand junction from 9-11pm, but in this video it was a different circumstance that is less common
@@BostonByRails thanks I was just wondering because I live right next to the DownEaster so I wish I could know if it came on a certain schedule so I could see it more often because the last time I got a video of it I was being a foammer and you could here me
When I was at MIT in the late '70's , I don't think I ever actually saw a train on the Grand Junction. That was before Amtrak started the Maine service out of North Station and needed to move trains between North and South Stations. The Readville Switcher must have run late at night, if it ran at all then. Before going to college I lived near the Roslindale commuter rail station, which was not very busy at all. In the forward to the book "The Great Railway Bazaar" Paul Theroux (who grew up in Medford IIRC) wrote something to the effect that he never heard a train horn without wishing he was on it, and I felt the same way. Thanks for the fun videos.
Do u know northeast railfan first name he did something special for me on his channel I just wanted to thank him by his first name if u do know him thank u if u don't know him no worries message me when u have a chance
Haha, good question. Im pretty sure its just because keeping them open vs closed on an extra doesnt really matter. Sometimes they leave doors closed too, I think it just depends on whatever state they were in at the yard
Thanks for teaching me about the Grand Junction line.

@@rosarioyeen1371 hey cool!! Its always such a fun train to see
did the BU bridge ever have two tracks?
Yea, it once had two tracks but one was taken out a while back (i have no clue when probably late 1900’s)
Only place in the US where a road bridge crosses a rail bridge that crosses a river.
A few days ago my mom caught 1 F40, 4 cars, and the Readville switcher heading past lansdowne
Wow! Thats cool!
I have two questions. 1. What camera do you you use? 2. What radio frequency were you listening too?

2:10 - What gives? Weren't the lights flashing?
Yep! They were flashing and the train was clearly blowing its horn. Ppl these days 😒
For the Amtrak crossing grand Junction which time does it usually come by and what days Usually if you know

Any idea why when the MBTA moves coaches they always leave all the doors open?

@@BostonByRails okay, I'm surprised they don't keep them closed in the yard to keep animals (including trespassers) and weather out
@@TBTboston Don't tell Maura Healy about the free sleeping quarters.
Do the GP40MC still got 645E3 or do they have a 645F because it sounds kinda like a 645F or 710.
Is that a type of engine?
@@BostonByRails yep it’s a type of prime mover/engine
