The fact you got permission to view the inside of 1001 is amazing it’s a testament and example of respect and a lesson that shows rail workers are just like us and we both are one in the community loving trains if your kind courteous one may meet that one individual that’ll let you see the inside of the locomotive or show you the ins and outs
Great video. It was so much fun meeting you Nate. Once again it was so much fun railfanning the Dinner Train. Great video. As you would say see you on the rails.
Incredible video! This is undoubtedly one of the greatest rail conferences I've ever seen since it not only brings in higher ups from several commuter rail agencies, but it also called for the gathering of rare equipment, such as the great dome (which I now know can fit under the wires).
I am surprised that Amtrak let that great dome car run under the overhead wire territory. I remember when the old B&O railroad had dome cars on their long distance trains and made people stay out of the dome car when the train was under wire in the Washington DC terminal area. Otherwise it was just a clearance problem with tunnels that restricted dome trains in the northeast part of the country.
❤ to the person that was doing the commentary did an outstanding job please keep up the good work and I look forward to looking at the videos a job well done😊
Can't help but notice that the 1001 is more or less brought up to VIA Rail spec, other than the Tier 4 generator and the ditch lights being Amtrak style on the front. It's weird seeing those ditch lights paired with the signature F40PH-2D HEP generator "Blister" on the rear, as well as lack of rear platform...
Lol. Boston trams are weird af to me - but still a worthwhile experience. I think that Boston has challenges some other cities don't have, because they've kept the more narrow streets and other features that make it pleasantly quaint. It's also smaller in size for at least the downtown area, which means you can't compare it to huge cities. As hardy as I thought I was in Chicago, I froze in Boston. But I think it's pretty, and I love the snow.
Yeah the Garfield’s have struggled they have finally become more reliable. Also only 1055,1027,1034,1059, and 1071/1072 are still in rebuild then all the F40s are here
If only the cape flyer had a dome... wait... maybe Mass Coastal can get some rights to do this more often... Great video as always and thanks for sharing!
As you saw in the video it would be hard to schedule anything like this in the future. With all the MBTA and Amtrak regular service that train would be held at many points going and coming to Boston.
Thanks for the great educational video, Boston by rail I thought your information that you were talking about the F40 1001 rolling stock engine I really thought that was really interesting to hear about that engines past history and now that it’s back on the rails of the MBTA again. And I think it’s awesome that Mass coastal and the MBTA have such a close connection and that they’re able to make such a historical summit. Come to life. Hopefully they’ll do it again soon. I would love to Chase this train if they do it again. But thank you for this educational video. I literally learned so much from this video that I did not know.
I was helping service one of the Regionals (specifically the one on the right at 28:00) when I saw the Dinner Train pull in. I had no idea what I was looking at at first until I asked a group of railfans what this was and they filled me in, it was quite the sight. One of them even suggested I take a closer look being an employee, if I had known how rare this was I would've!
its so cool that this ran to south station. i saw this heading to the cape at bridgewater, then saw it in middleborough yard the day after the train ran. also great video!
The 1129 has the colors (minus the gray) of Boston & Maine’s diesels from late in WWII until 1956. The decade of dieselization. Coincidence? I’d like to think not. The B&M 1129 was one of two EMD SW-1 switchers that worked within the Salem, Ma. yard limit from their acquisition in 1953 until at least 1973. They featured roof mounted number boards, side rails, and charming three-note horns. Still in original paint, in decrepit condition. Anyone know the back story on the paint and 1-in-a-thousand choice of number?
It would have been cool if the FL9 was geared with all modern safety devices, that way it could be the one to lead the Dinner Train. Still very cool, just wish the FL9 at least blasted her steam whistle
If it was working Metro North until 2009, then it probably had ACSES equipment at the time, whether it still has that is another story. They might also just not trust that old locomotive to make the trip up from New York on its own.
The passenger cars appear former R&N. If they are, I wonder whether they were sold or leased to CCC. (The silver roofs are reminiscent of Ohio Central.
Another banger! Now we just need to wait for a steam locomotive to come into Boston. Btw, how did you learn so much about technical things like the 480 cable?
I already know the engineers are gonna be complaining about those desktop controls being put in the F40. Should’ve put something as ergonomic as its original control stand in.
"That's a roger" is incorrect. "Roger" means " received and understood your last transmission". "Affirmative" means "yes". This hold for pilots, mariners and military personnel. Sorry for being so picayune, but an air-traffic controller might get cross with me, a pilot, for mixing the two.
the dome car is not a real empire builder. it was painted to look this way. it was from the Iowa pacific auction. the sister dome car to this one is at ACWR in North Carolina.
That may have been the last owner but it was the Milwaukee Road that had the most super dome cars originally. I do believe that the Great Northern Railroad had them on the Empire Builder consist but I do not know if they had them built or bought them used in latter days of operation.
@@johnchambers8528 The car on the train was the Prairie View . That car was built in 1955 for Great Northern and ran on the Empire Builder until 1970 when Amtrak took over. I do know of the car's history after 1970 since I am a Great Northern fan who could not care less about Amtrak.
Awesome video as always but I do have maybe a weird question for whoever can answer it. Why is it that the south coast rail locomotive was used to put perfectly running/operational T locomotives on each end of the train when they could have just moved themselves? Is it a procedural thing or lack of crews or...?
That's actually crazy. I saw the gray paint on a F40 on the Fairport NY railcam getting transported I think was getting rebuilt or repainted. Does 1129 run on the south side mainly?
Wow I dnn't know how you guys do this but if you need help I'm avaiable wed and thursdays if you need extra footage or help. I do like how south station is very well it and protected on the platforms since they are building the South Station Tower

Awesome ❤❤❤That FL9 looks amazing 🥲
The last one was built in 1960.
Great video. It was so much fun meeting you Nate. Once again it was so much fun railfanning the Dinner Train. Great video. As you would say see you on the rails.
Likewise! Glad you enjoyed Sam

Awesome video! Although i must say, whoever was operating the 2008, was running it pretty rough, especially on those coupling moves.
For me personally one of the most impressive passenger rail car is the Super Dome!

Nice paint job on the locomotive looking fresh

Wow! I did not realize that Rail Spike was talking about a big event than I thought! Great Video! 20/10!!
The production quality and thoroughness is insane. Keep putting out more bangers like this!!
11:49 I feel that struggle to get the coupler open (I had that same struggle at the Southeastern Railway Museum this past weekend)
The T engines usually don’t like to play nice when coupling up
MCCX 2008 should have a little name plaque named "Spirit Of Middleborough" because it pretty much lives there 🤣
It's good to see old engines and can be used as antiques. Maybe even repaint them.
Glad to see more F40’s going to MBTA. The Garfields have been nothing but trouble.

Wow, I love the paint on locomotive 1129. that deep red and gray and black looks sharp.
I'd say that what you see as red, I see as purple, or a violet. What do observers say?
@@549BR Well it's distinctly different from the rest of the MBTA units which are clearly purple/pink.

Nice collaboration.
Love the old and new !
I saw that train too on the same day!!! Didn't see u tho :(
Can't wait to see new F40 4C In Service
Metra looking at these F40s like 🤑

Nice I saw the test train when I was entering Boston!
I know I operated that locomotive up to wassaic and it's sister 2012 in ny central colors I retired in 2022
22:28 full power F40 audio in 2024? Yes plz
AJ Rod saves the day AGAIN
AJ GIVE ME DIRECTIONS TO BRAINTREE NOW OR IM NEVER CHASING TRAINS WITH YOU AGAIN
Great catches!
Great video!!!!!
13:55 - When a push/pull regional commuter train is being pushed, is there anyone watching things, riding in the locomotive?
The passenger cars appear former R&N. If they are, I wonder whether they were sold or leased to CCC. (The silver roofs are reminiscent of Ohio Central.
The T really needs to do some McGinnis New Haven and B&M heritage units
Woahhhhh no way!? That's awesome!!!
What a video Nathan! I think middleborough/lakeville I hear is supposedly gonna be a seasonal stop when the capeflyer runs happen.
The current platform is a new station is being built north of the old one
@@damiancooper3063 I am more than well aware of that
Looks cool! I’m wondering, when will 1030, 1036, 1071 and 1072 appear? I hope they will be in a heritage livery.
Crazy that they can’t squeeze better emissions equipment in a full carbody locomotive

Radio transmissions
1001 looks like via rails rebuilt f40ph-2D locomotives
Here in San Francisco CA Caltrain sold there Double Deck cars and there F -40’s to Lima South America for there start of commuter rail service
20:34 - I was wondering if this is really a railroad grade crossing?
. . . I hear no horn, so apparently no.

20:08 how did the PTC train get turned around??
wait... i didn't even notice that until I read this
Good question! They ran the way they were in the first clip most of the time, but later tested the wye at cotley junction which spun the consist

@ Thanks for giving the origin of that great dome car. I thought that those type of cars did run on the Empire Builder.
@28:57 it also serves as a crumbling, festering deathtrap that has quite literally claimed the life of multiple people and threatens to take more

Who gave that grey f40 a BBL 😭
Yooo that intro 0:31 is so fire🔥🔥

Why didn’t 1001 come into the station under its own power?
possible lacking PTC
@ thanks
Why did the train need 3 locomotives? Or was only one of them powering the train and the others along for the ride?
The FL-9 was just there for show, it lacks the proper signaling equipment to operate on Keolis territory, so the train needed 2 MBTA engines on each end.
@@matthewfoster1307. The FL-9 was not for show, it supplied the 480 volt HEP, as you can hear the Cummins engine running, in the video, listen carefully. Those 40’s were not equipped with HEP.
@ yea I remembered that after I commented
Were representatives from NJT in attendance?
How do you find rare trains? Is there a group that knows when they’re coming?
Cape Cod Rails FB group
Why didn't they just let 1129 run under its own power?
My guess is that a PTC capable locomotive has to lead.
Sorry to pop ur bubble lol but There was one passing like a year ago in’s the Boston area
Yep, they ran one into Braintree this past February. This is the first time it has gone into boston proper, let alone south station.
23:40 WHY DID HE BLOW THE HORN
He was doing a hornshow for the person watching the train
Hey Boston by Rails! I was just wondering if 1001 or the dinner train is still running? If so, where can I see it?
I think this was a one time thing.
Deep Seas Electronics; are they expecting a flood?
too bad 2026 couldnt come
I like the colors on the 1129. I think its time for the T to repaint all the other power units.
Why did it need not just one, but two MBTA locomotives, in addition to the FL9?
Those MBTA 40’s were not equipped with HEP. As you can hear, FL-9 2011 supplied the 480 volt Head End Power.
