I've watched dozens of videos about the Civic Type R, but this is the FIRST one that convinces me to go and test drive one at the dealer. Your sense of detail (the way you explain the shifter, the engine specs, the body), your subjective inputs ("This car makes my heart happy") just says it all and more. Thank you!

Honestly I blame the enthusiasts for this one. I've been watching Type R reviews for years because I want to get one someday. The number one complaint I've seen in dozens of reviews was the sound or lack thereof. It was obviously consistently bad enough PR that they tried adding this feature.

Needs a sound generator delete
On the 2020 Type R, it's behind the glove box. Some removal of parts to access it. Then you just unplug it
You just have to unplug the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) module. I have a 2018 Accord that has the same fake engine sounds. I disconnected the ANC because I added a subwoofer and some upgraded speakers, and the ANC will have a hissyfit with an aftermarket sub. Fringe bonus: no more fake engine sounds. And the cabin doesn't seem any noisier to me without the ANC than it was with it.
No, it needs selectable sounds. Like a mosquito noise, or an elephant stampede, or a tea kettle.

I know a couple ppl that have these and everyone deletes the fake noise also coming fron the ST community we all delete the sound symposer as well
My husband and I each have one. We drove them at VIR, Road Atlanta, Summit Point, etc. we did go to 265 wheels. Handles great and pulls out of a turn like nobody’s business. Nice review. Thanks. ❣️
Sarah, I'm so glad you finally got to review one of these cars. I totally agree with you, that hot hatches are super fun to drive. As the owner of a 2018 Focus RS, I've been waiting to see what you thought of the Type R, as the RS is one of its main competitors. One of my neighbors has a Type R and put an aftermarket exhaust on it and it sounds a ton better. Great review, as always. Keep 'em coming.
I really like that Honda made their Type R to be all manual transmission; the only disadvantage is the electronic parking brake. Bring back that lever !

Man. Grew up on JDM, had a civic in high school... but Ive been on the euro cars for many years now. Now at 32.. man I REALLLLLY want a Type R. Have been eyeing the Golf R hard.. but these Type R reviews.. makes a guy want one ya know

Finally!!! Regarding smaller wheels in the real world, little to no torque steer with 18/19" wheels. We've been tracking them for a couple years with no issues. Also, the HPD developed TC CTR also runs on 18" wheels.

@@superblackbirdrider Doug DeMuro has a video whose title explicitly states the opposite. Sounds like they drive pretty differently, which makes sense given the turbo and the weight difference.

...this was asked of the auto manufacturers before and the BRZ/FRS/GT86 was the result. critics used to rant and rave about it. now all anyone can do is complain about the lack of power. out comes cars like the MOPAR Demon and STI S209... people complained about the price for "just a Challenger/ WRX". the market needs a universal chassis that is fully customizable from the ground up and tailored per customer, for instance, if they want a performance build or eco build. kind of like a build-a-bear. hahaha

As I understand it, that gap at the back door panel is intentional. If it had a piece on the door, the air would follow the contour, as it is, the air that hits it is sent up over the wing creating more downforce in the rear.
I enjoy the look of anticipation before every braking test....
And facial expressions during the test :)

The problem with that Road&Track article is that they went with a 18" wheel that had a much more aggressive offset. Offset affects your scrub radius, not so much the diameter of the wheel. Their wheel width and tire width were both wider than the stock setup as well.
What would be the best Wheel Tire Combo ?

I got an SI... just because I couldn't afford the Type-R... but with the full PRL upgraded turbo kit, intercooler amongst other mods... I'm not AS sad anymore about having a Type-R... lol
There was a company at SEMA in 2019 that made a rear electric drive that made it even quicker and to act like an AWD car.
Fastest way to go out of business is sticking great engineering under an ugly body
@@mikeb3172 if that were true, Subaru would have been out of business ages ago. Instead, they are thriving (2014 Outback owner) because we've grown to love the ugly/weirdness because of what's under it.

I've been enjoying my Type R since 2018. It reliably took me through Europe on many occasions.
The 20" wheels are a little too much, but are really food in the summer.
The 2020 Type R Sport Line has 245/35 19" wheels, which in my opinion are the better choice. But the small spoiler doesn't fit the car at all.
$40k isn't that bad of a deal, considering, that at the end of the 90's, you would pay just as much for a Porsche GT3 with about the same power but way less practicality.
And it's a Honda, so you know it is reliable for many years to come.

I like Forester Gump because you built the Forester that Subaru should have built. Since Subaru has become mainstream and has kept shattering sales records they've become very risk averse.
Why not put a fake sound generator in a Tesla or something, why did they put it on a Type R smh.
The BMW i8 does exactly that, including a speaker on the outside.
So the sound coming out of the exhaust is not real?

Put some bolt ons into the civic si and it will go faster than a type r. The civic si can go faster with after market parts and a tune, but guess what, so can a type r!

The Sound Generator turned me off from buying an SI. Such a stupid addition. I didn’t even look at the R, because of the price. Great review, and funny.

Nice cars. But the engines overheat in hot weather - probably why Sara wasn’t loaned a car during summer - and there’re multiple owner-sourced complaints of gearbox problems.

Big fan of the Mons Venus.
One thing I can't stand about Honda is the cars come riced straight out the factory. All the useless styling that adds drag to the car, the fake carbon fiber, fake vents that act as parachutes to the aerodynamic, etc... I just can't get into that. It's like they're designing the cars to appeal to high schoolers.

Honda is having trouble with their 1.5 L engine. They had to extend the warranty due to fuel getting in with the oil and causing premature wear.

40k on my Civic sport with 1.5T zero issues. But I change my oil every 3-5 K unlike what Honda recommends. It's freaking BLACK at 5k like come on...

The thing that makes me question people sometimes is when they buy an engineered car like an R and then think they know better than HONDA engineers and then proceed to drop it , put bigger tires on it etc. You just ruined the entire reason for this car in the first place. When you start messing with all that crap you consequently lose the magic you purchased the car for in the first place. !!!
Well said. When I was young, modding was a way to make the car your own. My friends and I couldn't afford fast cars so we did anything we could to make the car faster or unique. As I get older, and can afford fast cars, I find that I want to customize them a lot less. The engineers know what they are doing and they do it well at Honda. Modding also tends to make vehicles unreliable. The best car is the one that runs ALL the time.
You can change the tires to Michelin Sport 4S and thats it and go 18´´ for better traction and handling.
Wider tires only made my Type R handle 1000X better and have alot more grip on the road and track, looks better too... I don't have torque steer issues either. My wheels are +50 so only 10mm less than the stock offset.
Great car but should placed in garage for future generations .Tesla and now Volkswagen are all in on EV's ,RIP ICE vehicles 🔥
