Man I swear Minisforum is on fire right now with all these innovative designs. They're definitely making some of the most interesting devices imo.

The V3 is just out of this world! We've had the Surface Pro for ages now, more than a decade (!), made by a trillion dollar company, revised over and over again. And here comes that upstart Cinese manufacturer and says "let's just do it right, for once." Amazing. That's what giving a sh*t on big corporation deals gets you.
indeed, in my case though it’s unfortunate the WiFi is integrated, i really wanted a portable router and server which this thing would be just perfect for if it had it. for a cluster workload though these are amazing
MS01 is also a great "server" solution
I've been complaining about the USB-C nightmare for ages, and I felt like I was the only one. Glad to see someone else is driven partially insane by it as well.

Hi Wendell! I'm thinking digital signage makes a lot of sense for this. There the PoE makes a lot of sense as a way to remotely power cycle a unit when a TT comes in, and low power would be fine. It would probably replace a 12 year old multicast box that was running the video stream before.
Bought the MS-01 13900H... Amazing lab computer. Their UEFI leaves much to desire, but impressed with the value and utility Minisforum is able to deliver.

USB-C can be directional specific also. they might put the pull up or pull down resistor directly in the cable to tell which side is the client is why I think it might be able to have directional specific cables as well.
For a while I used a similar mini-PC (a MeLE Quieter4C) with a PoE PD splitter and was quite happy with it (it eventually got repurposed as part of a cyberdeck, though). Considering this doesn't need an extra splitter, it is actually pretty reasonably priced for what you get. Which is surprising since they seem to be marketing it more towards business use.
The disposable-ness irks me. Once the SSD dies, it's trash, and that's when, not if. Also weird limitation for the PoE, considering PoE-in switches can guzzle up way more power without issue.
Buried at the back of a TV, would this be good enough to run a media server? Home automation machine? Over kill?

Ordered one about a half-hour before I stumbled across this video. Will add a 24" UltraSharp monitor and backlit wireless keyboard. This is to replace an old HP 18.3" laptop.
Awesome! Technically you could make a DIY laptop with this by adding a Power bank.
If I didn't already have a Shield TV or an immediate need for a new box, then I'd probably jump on this right away.
N100 seems to fit the media center PC niche really well from what I've seen, PoE also just makes it super convenient since I'd hardwire it anyways and have a PoE switch.
My gut is that it likely wouldn't have too many issues with the performance when streaming but I might be worried about emulator performance.
The fact that it's POE capable is a game changer. Would much much rather sell these to clients over really poorly equipped AIOs or similar, just strap this to the back of a monitor and it'd be great for basic word processor clients

To be honest I'm tempted to get one just as a thin client for connecting to my work VM (since I'm forced to use one). My regular work/gaming desktop consumes 70W while displaying the VM.

This could be a great solution for an SBC for a phone system deployment. Especially get if it allows on power state from power loss on POE.
I wonder how cooling would change if an AirJet by Frore replaced the fan + heatsink. On the surface, this device looks like a suitable application for the "solid-state chip for active device cooling"
usb type-c is basically usb type any, you gotta check the time at runtime or just segfault.
I tried to get one as soon as I got an email notification but no delivery to my country... Sad

What about a POE+ splitter? One side is POE and the other is Ethernet with a USB C?
Haha, I have that same PinePhone USB-C type dock. It was a good deal, you paid 50$ for it, but you get a nice(aluminum frame!) dock and an extra gigabyte of RAM for the PinePhone. Comes in handy, and of course, with the dock and a monitor the PinePhone is basically just a small, slow, low-power computer.
You should have done some temperature testing between POE and USB-C, I suspect it might be a heat issue. There have been similar industrial devices tested by STH with big passive heatsinks and he did not report a similar performance loss (or maybe a marginal one I do not remember exactly). Theoretically with 802.3bt we could see way faster mobile chips in devices like these.

Wait, did you run the benchmarks while using the PoE to power both the PC and the portable screen? That would definitely generate much more heat, while also not being a very typical use case.
I feel like if you wanted to run a small CCTV NVR, this could be perfect. You'd already have a PoE switch for the cameras, so just add a USB Coral for the entity detection and you're off to the races, with everything powered off your switch.
Any suggestion on a cheap way to get 4k120 hdr on a mini pc like theese? seem all of them cap at 4k60 or have no hdr support, I have an amazing 4k120 hdr setup with moonlight, but there is just no clients out there that support them
Android TVs can't do 4k120 hdr, Apple Tv does not support 120 hz, Linux clients do not support HDR , my solution so far has been to use macbooks to push 4k120 hdr + ethernet but it's overkill and have no good console like ui
Why did they stop at 8GB of RAM, WHY!? I would really like to have one or two to run a small power Kubernetes cluster and use the 2.5Gbit connection for speedy connection to my NAS.
Screw the raspi cluster this would be a good use case for a home k8s cluster

Wish it had a 16 GB RAM option. Then it would have been a perfect candidate for my homelab cluster :(

because if you got Thunderbolt, you know you got all:
- power transfer
- video transfer
- data transfer of level of which Thunderbolt version it uses...
I really would love to see all Intel based devices like this to actually use at least a single thunderbolt port.
I like how Intel already said that it will force Thunderbolt port on all Z800 series boards

The problem is USB C is a standard for the shape of a connector. USB 1, 2, 3 etc. are communications, power delivery and assorted other protocols related to the cables. USB 3 cables are fairly expensive and USB 4 very expensive so a lot of companies slap USB C connectors on USB 3.0 or even USB 2 cables and deliver them when that will be good enough. If you really need USB 4 then specifically buy USB 4 cables and specifically verify your devices have ports that support that.
Given the low wattage I feel like this could be used in a car for something nifty

That's really disappointing with the PoE heat issue. Very likely also would affect longevity. Was really looking forward to this thing.
CPU-Z of 382 on USB-C down to 245 on PoE. That's pretty brutal.
I wonder if I can use it for Moonlight streaming.

Um. You didn't do your CPU stress tests with that USB-C monitor attached, did you? That's really abusing the PoE interface.

I'll have to find someone who does a full teardown to see if the WiFi can be pulled out. This is the perfect solution for me, except that it can't have WiFi. Hopefully it's located on the PCB such that it can be desoldered easily.
You neglected to mention the storage is UFS 2.1, not NVMe as implied by the “additional m.2 slot” comments.
Actually it is 3.1. the spec sheet of minisforum is wrong. If you boot the device you see it is actually a KLUEG8UHDC-B0E1 chip which is UFS 3.1. which is very annoying as pretty much any linux distro will not run on it. Fedora does install but has no root file system when booting and all other sorts of issue.I will be returning the device because i can not use it how i want to.

I love the connector but damn USBC is a crap show. I went through a heck of a time with my quest 2.. the cable they bundle with it is only usb2 but it needs usb3 to use with your PC. FFS
When these n100 boxes hit $150 I'll replace the TV RPis.

This is why I hate the USB-C standard. and the USB-C port feels all floppy after awhile...
Heck the Pixel 8 does not even include a charging cable in the box that can fully saturate the maximum charging capacity if the phone... yet Google doesn't tell you and most users wouldn't be able to check unless they have a cable tester.

They died pretty fast because of the bloatation of windows with each forced update.. Now even loading a 720p youtube video will struggle and drop frames :-( .. Or loading windows 10 64bit already..

Mini PCs need more storage. Either bigger and cheaper ssds, or a compartment for a sata disk. First, not going to happen any time soon, and there are only a few with sata.
All that blah blah blah about how it is "throttling" and "hot" and not a single peep about if it's attaining/maintaining the advertised boost and base clock specs.

You said it was 85C, according to a, presumably infrared gun 85C.
The spec for the lowest-grade caps is 85C. They go up to 105C.
The specification for an electrical component is the temperature at which it can safely run for its duty cycle without an expectation of shortened lifespan.
The same applies to CPUs. A CPU running at 105C with a junction temperature of 105C is not "too hot". It's running within spec.
Intel's 13th and 14th CPUS are experiencing instability and degradation because of too much *power* not because "too hot".
