Home Alone (SNES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of THQ's 1991 Super Nintendo license-based platformer, Home Alone.
The Super Nintendo version of Home Alone was one of the first games for the 16-bit console, releasing just in time for the 1991 holiday season.
You play as Kevin, a precocious brat whose family accidentally leaves him behind when they leave for their Christmas vacation in Paris. The Wet Bandits, a couple of small-time crooks, have set their sights on riches of the McCallister house, and it's up to Kevin to defend his home.
The game is split across levels, each set in one of four "wings" of the house. Kevin has to collect a certain number of items to deposit in the laundry chute to prevent the robbers from stealing them, and then he has to go to the basement to face off against some creature conjured up by his overactive imagination.
It's a simple search-and-collect style game, and though it doesn't do anything revolutionary, it works well enough. Imagineering's SNES effort fared far better than Bethesda's pathetic attempt on the NES ( • Home Alone (NES) Playt... ), that's for sure! The controls are reliable, the soundtrack is festive, and the graphics are colorful. I've certainly had some fun with it over the years.
(Does the basement remind anyone else of Maniac Mansion?)
The real selling point seemed to be the digitized stills from the film. Screenshots were regularly shown off in magazines, and they were super impressive by 1991 standards. The sampled scream that plays when Kevin gets caught is also pretty fun.
When all is said and done, it wasn't bad and it wasn't great, but Home Alone for the SNES got the job done. It made for a good weekend rental if you found yourself hankering for something to get you into the Christmas spirit, and it was by far the best game THQ had released to this point.
Merry Christmas, yuh filthy animals! :)

This version of Home Alone was soooooo much better than the dumpster fire that was the NES game. I actually had fun with this one!

What's interesting about this version of Home Alone is that it is actually more of a true sequel to the first movie, and the music was done by Bitmasters who would be VERY prominent during the Gameboy and Gameboy Color era where they did the music for MANY Infogrames games on those systems.

To me, this is the very definition of a guilty pleasure. I still have fond nostalgia for this, even though it's not that good. Probably my favorite game from Imagineering, too.

Hoo boy, this one's...a little more like it. Sure doesn't hold a candle to the Genesis one though. Here Kevin has to...send all the stuff and all the...many pets we had no idea the McCallister's owned down to the basement's giant vault to lock 'em away from Harry, Marv and...their...evil minions? Ok, but Kevin's digitized scream when you get Game Over is easily the best thing here.

I actually owned this one. It wasn't close to my favorite SNES title, but it was fun to play. The basement area with the grey bricks and the music always reminded me of Goro's Lair from Mortal Kombat for some reason.

2:28 - Did the McCallisters buy their house from Dr. Fred Edison? Because that dungeon background looks an awful lot like the one from Maniac Mansion.

The scream whenever you get caught is still funny to hear and see even 😆 and at least the final boss wasn't a freaking furnace *apparently in the game boy version, even to the point where it have a face*

4:46, least they're kind enough to give the key to the room next to the door after collecting all of the requirements.
    8:05, DAD. How sweet.
8:55, this song sounds like it belongs in Back to the Future.
29:00, also...why this image of Kevin shirtless for the game over screen?!
