- A complete playthrough of Beetlejuice on the Game Boy. This was developed by Rare and released in 1992 on the infamous LJN label. It's a completely different game to Rare's other Beetlejuice title for the NES. There are six stages that are all quite varied, gameplay includes platforming, shooting, puzzles, memory games, mine carting, more platforming and of course a final boss.
In typical 8-bit Rare style this game is extremely hard, especially towards the end. It goes out of it's way to screw you over and there are no continues at all. You can get extra lives but most of them require you to beat the mini games, which aren't always easy. I never really got the hang of doing the attic level well and that bouncy snake stage before the boss can be a real pain to get right. I do lose a few lives in this run down to silly mistakes but to be honest this is the only time I've finished this game and I was kinda glad to be done with it.
The Game Boy version of Beetlejuice is based on the likenesses from the animated TV series, and because of the limitations of the Game Boy's hardware, scales the action down to large and exaggarated sprites that cramp down the screen.
At least this looks more fun than the NES version.
I agree but too it's not in color because I like color games.
@@tolbertjason An SNES and Super Gameboy fixes that issue, giving the game some color to it. I bet you hate old black and white movies too huh.
If the game is fun, it doesn't matter what it is on.
Beetlejuice: HAHAHAHAHAHA! IT'S SHOWTIME!
BEETLEJUICE!
For The Nintendo Game Boy!
From LJN!
oh no... LjN.... still love the game
Beetlejuice: It’s Showtime
Mine used to bug after sliding down the roof :( That's why i watched till the end :)
I'm playing through this now and this game is absolutely ridiculous. It starts off fun but...level 4 onwards is a joke. You're thrown into trial and error areas with the minecart/bs spikes and then the snake level, the difficulty curve is insane. There's no continues either so you play through the entire game each time to have like 3 or so tries at it.
This entire game is slowly edging forward each time, the game throws in a mechanic with zero explanation and you die because of it. Very frustrating. It's funny cos it looks like a cute little game from a glance but that minecart level onwards is a bit of a joke.
That's Rare for you.
Just watched your review! XD
Had to look up this game in full after watching it.
@@SuperTeeter64 haha. Yeah I thought the game looked like a fun little time. I had no idea it would be so ridiculously difficult by the end. I could've just used savestates but it wouldn't have captured the full experience.

I don’t know HOW you did it. But damn. I would’ve used save states a long, long time ago. I applaud your dedication. lol I looked up prices for the game too since I was curious and… yeah… dumb expensive.
Sounds like David Wise wasn't completely original with his intro to Donkey Kong Land. This sounds like he made this, then realized it wasn't the best, and redid it for DKL with enough changes to make it a different song.
childhood game
Awesome music on level battletoads
A mix between Contra and Mario Party and a typical platformer.
Good game, but it is very hard
Sometimes with like Tim Burton
This is a good game but once you have beat it you wouldn't want to play it again cause of its difficulty
Agreed, once was enough for me, it's one of the hardest Rare games and that's saying something.
True and I just beat it on my Gameboy but I got lucky with the last part of that snake stage before the final boss
Well done, that's the hardest part.
Thanks and well done to you too for beating the game.
@matt In some ways yes, it's much easier to get extra lives in Battletoads.
From Warner Bros
Haha i had this game i think its my Dads Garage 😅
At least it wasn’t made by LJN...
Nevermind.
It wasn't, only published. Rare made it.
Any idea if this can be played online anywhere? I don’t have a working gameboy anymore. Mine got destroyed by battery corrosion.
@@paulsextras6586 Rare developed a lot of LJN published NES games. Clearly, the developers were skilled when given time to develop. I bet all their movie tie-in games were developed in a ridiculously short amount of time plus the fact that all developers were honing in on their 8-bit programming craft. Heck, Atlus developed Friday the 13th for LJN. One thing is for sure, David Wise composed some really good music for all the 'bad' games.
@bmshaven Pretty much, also Rare were knocking out ports and a few original titles as well as the licensed stuff. They were busy.
@DJPonychangames No idea sorry, can you not just use an emulator?
Ghost part is too difficult... badly
What the hell is up with his face? Creepy!
Yeah He kinda looks like The Crow starring Brandon Lee!
Meh, turned off by the LJN logo.
Who else visited this video after watching "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice"?
Nope, I played this game on 'release' and only once made it past the mine cart level to be killed immediately on the snake level... wanted to see the part after the mine cart level after 30 years.
Still have the cartridge and gameboy from then and trying to get my oldest kid to play on it. Tetris works so far, but I'm not going to let her play this. I fear the gameboy won't be able to handle the mood...
