- A playthrough of Acclaim's 1991 license-based action game for the NES, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants.
Developed by Imagineering for Acclaim, Bart vs. the Space Mutants’ carries the same quirky sense of offbeat humor as A Boy and His Blob, Ghoul School, and even Barbie.
Late one night, Bart spies a massive UFO hovering over a clearing in Springfield. He creeps nearer to eavesdrop on the invaders’ conversation and learns that they have plans to enslave humanity. Conveniently enough, Bart just so happens to be wearing his handy X-Ray glasses, meaning that he is the only one who can see through the invaders’ convincing human disguises. Surmising that he is humanity's best shot at survival, Bart decides to save the world.
The aliens seem to have arrived unprepared for their hostile takeover, so they program their doomsday machine to accept purple objects as the main components from which they will fashion their weapon of mass destruction. The first stage, taking place on the streets of Springfield, tasks Bart with destroying or covering up as many purple objects as possible in order to thwart the aliens' attempt.
This unique (and ludicrous) setup provides an interesting mixture of puzzle and platforming action. Avoiding contact with the roving aliens, Bart must find cans of spray paint in the hopes of hiding anything purple from view. For things that cannot be simply painted, a bit of creative thinking will usually reveal another solution: using a wrench on a fire-hydrant will douse the tool shop’s purple door awning, making it appear red, while launching a cherry bomb at the window of a pet shop will send the purple bird fleeing in terror.
As he's vandalizing everything in reach, Bart can also use his glasses to see if anyone he comes across is an alien. If you see tentacles, you can jump on them to steal their orb thingies, and if you collect enough of them to spell out the name of the family member whose picture sits in the bottom-left corner, they'll help you out during that stage's boss fight.
Once Bart has taken care of the streets of Springfield, he'll move on to the Springfield Mall to find hats, the fairgrounds to find balloons, and the Museum of Natural History for exit signs. Finally, the last stage has him searching the maze-like interior of the Springfield Power Plant for fuel rods, which need to be collected and placed in the cooling pool in the basement.
The series’ trademark humor shines brightly in the first stage through constant references to events in the show: Moe’s Tavern can be prank called, the Jebediah Springfield statue gives advice, and the whistle can summon Grandpa Simpson to his window at the retirement home. Unfortunately, though the streets of Springfield are loaded with sight-gags and subtle allusions, the first stage seems to have received the lion's share of the team's creative juices, and the fun fair stage got what was left. The other three stages feel uneven and uninspired in comparison. They aren't bad, but they feel much more rote in their design, as if the developers didn’t have the resources to complete the game as they’d originally intended.
I really enjoyed the puzzles in the first and third stages - they remind me of the type of thing you'd see in PC graphic adventures. They took me quite a long time as a kid to figure them out, but I remember having a blast experimenting with everything until it all clicked into place.
The gameplay itself is fairly janky and takes some getting used to thanks to the awkward control layout. Since an item is usually assigned to the B button, running is done by holding the jump button, and a running jump requires pressing both buttons at the same time (hopefully not wasting ammo in the process). It's not broken - it works quite reliably - but it is far more awkward and clumsy than it should be.
The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is far from being the perfect game, but it keeps itself respectable with its unconventional challenges, clever humor, and its refusal to rehash every other platformers' mechanics. While it doesn’t succeed at everything it tries to do, I do feel that Bart vs. the Space Mutants is a fun, original, and personable game. I've always enjoyed it, warts and all, and I know I can't be the only one!

So you are telling me that someone actually finished the first level of this game?
I've played it through on the Amiga 500. And it was hard as f...
Ive made it to the museum a few times, but never past that.
first level is easy. It's the second level that's almost impossible. . .
I think I did on the Sega Genesis
I'm just as surprised as you are 😳
This has the feel of a Friday night. Home work is done pizza is ordered and we just rented this game. That’s why I like this game. Has the feel of nostalgia
Sounds like a childhood well enjoyed mate 👍
You gotta down broski... it was usually little ceasar pizza for me or us at home lol
@@michaelreyes1337 My older sister used to manage a Little Caesar's and brought home the leftovers pretty much every night. Sure that took a few years off my life. But as a kid seeing free pizza....
@@issacharezechias2209 you just made because you couldn’t beat the game
The simple times as a kid I loved this game! Very happy I got to be a kid in the 90s
Nostalgia ends when he gets to level 2.
Lol
Yep
Facts
Only for those who never played the game through. 😎
😂
All the things he does in the first 5 minutes took me months to discover. Great memories!
All this years and still remember clearly I never made it past the first level.
Facts. I was totally confused. I think in was too young to understand. I knew I just like the Simpsons. I thought I had gotten the one we played at arcades and we got this.😂
omg Ikr XD I still remember playing this game, sonic, earthworm jim, ristar, Ren And Stimpy and the other one Taz in Escape from Mars those are the only ones I remember by heart the other one I seem to not remember the name of was like some gargoyle thingy not too sure about it though XD
I eventually did thanx to internet help, bit then got slaughtered on The Second Level.
Same!! Far too hard for a kid to figure out with no internet videos to guide u. There are no instructions in the game that tells u to do all these tasks. Lol.
same, I never had the idea to paint with the spraypaint ^_^
I don't care how much the internet seems to hate Bart vs. The Space Mutants. I've always really enjoyed playing it.
same here, couldnt get far but would always rent it
If the whole game had been like stage 1 I'd agree. But the fact that most of it is just a collect-a-thon platformer is so disappointing. I was so hype for the environmental puzzles as a kid, and super excited when I finally got to stage two, only to be disappointed at it turning into a platformer. My lack of skill and enthusiasm prevented me going further. Shame, I might have been more excited if I knew the fair had puzzles again.
I love this game bro...
@@HiddenInTheTruth I think the closest is stage 3, the fair. But yeah...would've been funner if it was more like the first stage.
I actually think Bart vs the space mutants is a good game .
Goes to show just how random, bizarre, and absolutely damn difficult these NES games were compared to modern games.
Este jogo émuito difícil, mas é muito divertido
this game 🎮 🕹️ is very difficult but very fun
@@RodrigoLonguinhothis game sucks bro stop the cap and nostalgia lying. I would rather watch all the episodes in one of the newer Simpsons seasons than play through this
As a kid I could never pass the first level, yet I played this one like crazy and was really proud to have it in my NES collection. I liked the colorful cover too lol. 😂
Man I thought I was the only one lol
The old Simpsons games always had great cover art. They really captured the spirit of the show.
I could beat the first level every now and again as a kid but never made it past the mall
Same. I rented it several times as a kid and never made it passed the first level. I could never get passed the barricade at the end of the skateboard part.
SAME! I never beat level 1 until I was 17!
I sure wish we had RUclips walk throughs back then. I wandered around aimlessly trying to figure it out.
Me too, as a kid i never did figure it out, it became known by me and my buddies as the game nobody knew how to play lol.
First level is a masterpiece, so many things to do and fan service, this game is a pure gem
Was difficult to play on my black and white TV 😵
I had never made it past the shopping mall stage and I don’t personally know anyone else who did, so watching the game play out like this is pretty incredible!
wait there is a shopping mall stage? hahaha first level for me till this day
I *LOVED* discovering the candy bar trick in the mall, letting you skip that utterly miserable platforming experience. Heck, it's crazy just how many secrets are crammed into this game...a few of them I'm seeing for the very first time right now!
I was terrible at this game, but boy is it nostalgic.
yeah
Good use of color palette, scrolling speed and no flickering. Smooth in general. Difficult as hell, though
This game was very difficult but pure nostalgia loved being a kid in the 90s!
Watching this now I'm shocked that I made it to the museum as a kid, definitely never got to the power plant. This game was bananas.
That museum level drove me nuts as a kid!
Man the carnival level was SO much fun as a kid. I never got past it but having those side games to play was REALLY cool.
I could never pass the shopping stage LOL
Good childhood memories :)
The furthest I ever got was the very start of the museum this was very satisfying to watch the end finally.
Yall remember the Dominoes Pizza "Noid" game? The older kids had it and I only got a chance to play a few times.
I had Yo! Noid, lol; the boss fights were pizza contests, and some levels were more fun than others.
This might be one of my favorite game play videos yet. This game is HARD! I have barely made it into the second level just ONE TIME! I never thought I would see the rest of this madness! Good job and thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Edit: After watching all of this, I am even more impressed! Very well done and SUB'ED!!!!
What a nostalgic feeling.. I used to play with it when I was a kid.. so difficult game. Sometimes I reached the circus..
You know what I think this game needs ? A fan remake. While the puzzle aspects could be kept , they can be polished up a bit to make them more fun, and most importantly, the controls could be reworked.
Yeah, you can't tell from this video just how bad the controls in this game are.
VERY late reply, but I must agree with you here. A remake will help this game A LOT, not just on the controls (I´ve played this game in the distant past, and those controls were a veritable struggle) but also some bizarre and rather outdated (even for the time) design choices (maps for the more labyrinth-esque levels, improved graphics, some way to at least defend yourself, more streamlined levels, etc.)
Have the puzzle be easier to decipher too
couldn't agree more
This was a super weird hidden gem. The learning curve was high enough that most people never got past the first few levels but each level had a ton of depth and things to find. A lot of stuff going on for an 8bit game. I only played the Master System version. It was a love hate relationship. Took a lot of practice and patience for young me to finish this back then but it felt very rewarding once I finally won. That last level broke me a few times haha. Looks like the NES version has a few extra things in each level? My memory is too bad to know for sure.
The stage 1 must be one of the most original stages in history of videogames... Only passed it as a kid because I read how to in a magazine. Thanks for this upload!
The game is a Parody to the one time movie: They Live, starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.
They also used some of the spund effects from the first Ghostbusters 2 game.
Someone on the writing team must have been a Piper fan, I remember in one episode Willie is shown on tv as Rowdy Roddy Peeper. 😂😂😂
Used to play this game on a black and white TV at my grandparents' house, a total challenge! looking back in time it brought me so many great memories, thanks for sharing.
Almost thirty years later... I discover you can pick up those top hats from the ground.
Never owned this, but rented the hell out of it. Never could beat it. Think the farthest I made it as a kid was the museum. It wasn't until I got into emulators I beat it with saved states.
The museum's where I got stuck too. Those disappearing block jumps were the bane of my existence for quite some time.
The controls in this game were not great and the hit detection was spotty.
Those jumping platform challenges in the museum were just MEAN.
I loved this game so much as a kid. Still watching it and love it. Thank you for the memories.
It was the first Simpsons game, so kids were required to like it at the time, since we had nothing to compare it to. A good friend of mine growing up had this (and later Bart vs. the World), and I remember playing this a lot at his house. But after the Simpsons arcade game came out, I couldn't really go back to this.
@yusakug I Got this game on release day as a kid and it is the *_ONLY_* Simpsons game that I absolutely refuse to go back to. I was a huge Simpsons fan at the time and it really tore me up inside just how bad the gameplay and the controls were. The boxart, graphics, and 8-bit rendition of the theme song were fine, but everything else... bleh!
I pity your childhood with this game. :(
I have just completed this after all these years thanks to you. Cheers ever so
Of all memories i have with gaming dating back to 3 years old around 1992, some of my fondest memories is of the games i couldn't beat.
Back then beating the same game 5 times was enough to put it down cuz you got tired of it.
Since a child i loved very difficult games and would never stop coming back till i beat em, the wonder thats left to the imagination of whats still there gave incentive. Losing cables, new tvs that needed additional plugs, is the reason i moved on from nes and snes without beating Dick Tracy, Bart Vs The World, The Ninja Turtles( wit the underwater level) Jurassic Park, Adventures Of Bayou Billy, Batman..mind you i was 3, 4 and 5 playin these with limited time and brain power lol.
Alright! Someone in MY age group!👊
I didn’t have the home consoles when I was little because my mom thought I’d be hooked (for some reason she trusted my four year old self with a Game Gear)
I do have fond memories with The Simpsons Arcade Game as well as Barts Nightmare(my dad’s college buddy’s son had it).
Even if the Simpsons Games weren’t technical marvels they were still charming and worth playing
Glad to read the comments and learn I was not the only one who never made it passed the 1st level, one of the worst game designs, but boy there's a lot of nostalgia.
ikr
Had this game as a child, never even got close to beating the second level. Didn't even know about all of the secrets in the first level. Thanks, great video. You've earned a thumbs up and a subscriber.
now here's someone who knows how to play this game like a true professional. i need a few tips on how to find the secret passages and shortcuts to beat bart vs the space mutants.
We rented this. It was a big deal that you could hear Bart Simpson saying 'Eat My Shorts' in the game as you never heard the characters speak in a NES game.
As a kid the dinosaur always gave me palpitations.
That jump.........
Took me years to complete this.
The jumping feels so bs at times in this game.
Wow, you did it!
This game was so frustrating for me, back then. Thank you!
The fact that The Simpsons has an NES game should tell you exACTly how old this show really is...
Always thought it was weird that it got a NES game since Simpsons came out at the perfect time to develop the game for SNES. Though there are even some first party Nintendo games that came out on NES long after the SNES so who knows
@wonderguardstalker People weren't as accepting of "next gen systems" yet so, NES had a longer lifespan.
I'm glad that you uploaded this video Alex. Hope you do the other Simpsons games like Bart Vs. The World, Bartman Meets Radioactive Man and Krusty's Fun House.
I've actually done most of those already. I've updated the description with links to them.
@@NintendoComplete Okay Alex.
I had this game when I was a kid. Played it primarily between ages 5 and probably 8 or 10. Could get as far as late museum - if memory serves, I'd get past the tar pits, but that T-Rex mini boss I think was always just a skeleton. Didn't attack and I couldn't get past it.
My game design professor always told me you can learn a lot more about game design from playing bad games than playing good ones.
This game has all the classic hallmarks of a game from this era in terms of cutting corners on design. The first level seems like it got all the attention, while the second and forth levels look like Bart is on drugs. There is SO much inconsistency in terms of what you can and can't jump on, they love these secrets where you just jump on something random and something random happens, and theres just so many situations where it is completely unclear what you are supposed to do, and the solution is completely unintuitive, something the player NEVER would have guessed on their own. Also, they keep rewarding you with coins long after they have any use, since you only seem to be able to spend them in the first level. And not at the mall....which would actually make sense. Every single boss is a dude who throws something at you, with pretty much no variation except I guess Sideshow Bob. The final level, instead of being a proper puzzle, crutches on how cumbersome they made getting between the floors as the main obstacle rather than something more clever.
I had this game as a kid. I could never get past the first level. But I always felt smart when I figured out one of the weird solutions to some of the problems, like using the payphone to call Moe's. I remember asking my mom about all the different joke names and she wouldn't explain them, so it took years before I finally got it, ha ha.
I can agree with your professor in this case. I *_really_* hate this game. The graphics, cover art, and 8-bit theme song are fine. But the monotonous gameplay, the droning original music, and that horrid control just make for another game cartridge to destroy.
I can agree there. Pretty much everything wrong with the game can be traced back to the lack of a consistent design and a concrete ruleset. And yeah, those ledges in the tar pit exhibit were merciless. The coins do serve another purpose, though. You get extra lives for collecting them. I think it awards one per 14 or 15 coins? I can't remember the exact number.
@@NintendoComplete Acclaim hyped this game like Crazy because they had secured a Licensing deal with Fox when Simpsons was barely a year old. In ‘90, it was a NEW IP. I remember seeing and reading about all about its hype and anticipation from Summer CES 1990, and then finally renting it brand new during the Holiday season and then being completely letdown and frustrated as hell.
This was the hardest game to actually win. It took me months just to finish the 1st level.
Thank for the share. I remember playing this game as a kid and could never get past the 1st level.
I didnt know that I finished the game until I watched this video, thanks!
I never knew about the Abe Simpson secret, using the key to access other parts of the town, the kid in the theater, or the locations of most of the hidden items...

The aliens would never think to look under those towels
Memories of my childhood, this game was tough I beat it but it took me some time.
Wow...I used to play it like a mad when I was a child but Ive never found out how to ' kill the dinosaur '...so now I ve seen the end of this hard game! Thanks for uploading!
my brother and I got to the 3rd stage fairly often. Was a slog though.
It's impossible to get through the museum without losing a life because the timer is so short on your first life.
Until now i never realized that Gary Kitchen and David Crane made this game. It's strange but somehow this obscure game makes more sense to me now. The game mechanics, music and sound effects are so similar to A Boy And His Blob. They even have Bart standing on crocodile heads in a nod to Pitfall which I have to believe was deliberate.
I just realized something. In the first level you have to get rid of everything purple, and yet Bart's shorts are, for some reason, purple! Does that mean that Bart was forced to eat his own shorts?
Underrated game
"Eat my shorts!" Only Simpsons games i ve played, was arcade beat emm up, and Krusty Fun House on Amiga, im familiar with Bart vs ... thanks to AVGN :)
part of my life is complete now that ive seen this finished lol
The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants is the second video game based on the animated television series The Simpsons, and includes the theme music from the show.
Nope. It’s the First Simpsons licensed video game. The VERY first one.
Man, that background at the forest sure is impressive as hell, specially for a NES game! Great use of colouring.
I love this game, even though it's one of the few I could never finish.
Its nice to see someone beat what i couldn't lol. This game was a nightmare.
I was 8-10 years old I definitely didn’t have the comprehension to make it past the first level after looking at how it’s done lmao
Take a moment and think about the fact that The Simpsons have been on through FIVE different decades (late 80's through now, even though it's actually been on the air for 31 years) and that the first game was for the NES. Kind of mind blowing.
I'm counting 4...
@@markassnigga 80's, 90's, 2000's, 2010's, 2020's. First debuted in '89.
@@Dorelaxen fuck
Yeah. When I started watching it I was Lisa's age. Now I'm Homer's...
The X ray glasses that Bart has is a reference to the movie " they live"
I remember being a kid and liking the game but getting so confused with it that I would only try it every once in awhile only to get confused again lol.
The Simpsons were huge, and Bart was icon, so naturally, they decided to make a video game. That "The Simpsons" arcade game is a classic. Bart Vs. The Space Mutants, on the other hand, is mostly know for being incredibly tough on account of the fact its controls are a mess, terrible or good. Sometimes a game is tough is tough on purpose. Sometimes it's tough because it's a fiasco. This is a latter.
I enjoyed it as a kid and still play it today.
After all these years I thought I was no good at the game for not finishing the first level but after reading the comments, I don't feel so bad😮
This has brought back memories , nice share 👍
It took for me more than 10 years to find it, I remember playing it on my pc using NES emulator.
I got this game for a Christmas gift in 1991 so I've always had a soft spot for it. The puzzle solving stuff is the best part of the game and it's a real shame it's bogged down by lousy platforming.
I'm the same way. I rented it a few times and then I asked for it for my 9th birthday in 1991. I thought it was great :) It was no Mario or Contra, but it was fun.
The puzzles are one of the worst aspects about this game. It's just boring.
1990.
Proudest moment was beating this game before my dad.
We had a load of NES games like this, Rad Racer etc, he would beat them all and I used to suck but one game he never beat was this
One of the best NES games thks for the walkthrough
The aliens peeking from behind the
T.V. tho.
Bet that use to scare kids back in the
Day.
OMG. I'd never passed first part of level 1. 😂
You're awesome.
I remember being excited bringing it home from Blockbuster. Man that was a frustrating weekend.
Bart wearing X-ray glasses, kinda like the movie They Live.
After reading comments I’m glad I was not the only who could not get past the first level
I would always die at the museum haha. Never could get past that level.
I remember playing this. this game was fun
My dear dad gave me this game as a christmas present in the 90's. I have fond memories of it but looking back now it sure had some repetitive music.
this game scared me as a child
Indeed, Bart looks cursed here
I love watching videos like this and I see things that I remember from my childhood but couldnt remember where I saw it from. I mustve used a game genie because idk how younger me couldve gotten through this game.
Picture playing this at night for the aliens to just show up from behind the
T.V. set?😰
Why did the sega version make the aliens look so different? I actually preferred this version as some elements looked waaaay better. than the others. One of the few games I could play from start to finish, good times.
Why was that ending so worth it? Beautiful
The critics need to eat Bart's shorts nowadays.
AVGN did technically eat his own shorts. So...
I cant wait to show my dad, he loved this gane more than me but could never beat it
Jogo este game desde 1997 e até hoje não consegui zerar, graças à este vídeo acho que vou conseguir! Abraços! 🇧🇷
I’m playing it literally right now and it’s one of nes hardest games
Um dos jogos mais injustos kkkkkk joguei o de Master System, não sei se conseguiu, mas boa sorte
oh my god i remember playing this SOOOO much..
and yes i spend many a nights just trying to beat the first level... had no idea the game was so much bigger :)
I remember when I first played this game. Doing well, got game over, told game to eat my shorts, banged console and cartridge ejected. The console must’ve felt threatened.
I remember that we rented this game on a friday in february back in 1992 and we didn’t know how to get past the first level, but then in 1997 someone told me that i have to turn everything what was purple into color red and after hours and day’s of puzzeling i finally succeeded beating the first level, but then came level. 2 & 3 and so forth and man those levels were real hard ,those jumping controls are akward and B is used for both run and jump and and 2 hits and you die BUT i eventually managed i finally beated this game at the summer of 1998,looking at it back i still cannot believe i beated it also those graphics and voices did blow my mind,it’s amezing how they accomplished this on the nes.
Once I past the first level and got to the shopping mall level, that was a wrap for me.
I asked my dad for Simpsons when I was a kid after seeing the arcade game. Little did I know this was nothing like it.
Serious Day of the Tentacle vibe. This game is great because it is unique.
We never got to the end of the museum. We died collecting keys. Lol. Thanks for showing the end of the game.
Mental finding out all these years later that everybody had the same experience not getting past level 1 🤣🤣
These were the good games!! Good times!
Beings back so many memories.
