In case you didn't know, I've been animating a full shot live on Twitch for the past week or so! I'm currently trying a new workflow, currently in blocking- so go follow me on Twitch if you want to hang out and ask questions :) I also showed off this Link rig a few weeks back! Any Twitch viewers here?? :D
Hey! Congrats for your channel! Is very helpful for all animators I was wondering, can you think of making a video about "snapping animation"? I ve seen is very popular nowdays and seems quite easy and fast. Thank you!
Having worked as a lighter on features and and on game Cinematics, using lighting will definitely help you sell your shot in sweat box or rounds. Also you can preview as an animator how the geo is likely to look rendered in the final shot. If you see anything funky in the deformation, especially when you push a pose, remember that this funkiness is likely to get pushed down the pipeline. It may get charged back for you to fix, or some TD is going to be cranky (at you) that they have to fix it. You will be golden as an animator by taking the time to check every frame of your animation before you publish your approved shot.
OMG I didn't know about the light editor at all.. it makes it so much easier. I will definetely use this on my animations from now on! Thanks a lot! you are the best!
I tried it... and really you made my day... I have been suffering in a scene I am working with a lit of dark and blacked parts of the character.. thanks a lot
This is amazing I had no idea about the Light Editor you just saved me so much headache and for sure will be using it in my next shot thanks so much what I usually do to make the character not so dark would be to turn up the ambient light on the geo I don't know if that was the way to go but that worked for me. And I soooo can't wait for the David and Dana rig review
I've been using the "Flat Lighting" setting for years but recently found an environment I like that does not work well with the default flat lights. This video was SUPER helpful for refreshing my memory on how to light an object using Maya's lights. Thank you, Sir! Followed you on Twitch as well! Looking forward to catching a stream soon!
Link rig is by Christoph Schoch, a freelance 3D artist and all around awesome dude! Check out his gumroad for more cool rigs: gumroad.com/thestoff Check out his Artstation for more of his work! www.artstation.com/thestoff
Thanks man, I have to translate from XSi to Maya now (mainly focusing on animation) and it's a pain, I hate to change between softwares that do the same thing just because one is less popular...
Extraordinary as always! thank you!! But what about the shadows? Shadows are very important when lighting. As far as I know there is no way of playblast and control smooth fading shadows in characters. Or is it? They normally look very sharp edges. Hopefully you can talk about this one day more deeply. All the best
I would love to be an animatior, but I don't know what to do where to start. I'm 15 and I'm looking forward to learn more and to get more advices. I would appreciate every advice that can help me
You can start by understanding the fundamentals. Things like the 12 principles of animation, how physics works (bouncing ball etc). There's plenty of tutorials online! :) After that, start practicing by putting your knowledge to the test. Also, start exposing yourself to other animator's work (be it student or professional), anything that inspires you to animate and innovate. Happy animating :)
Hey there! I find your videos very useful, thaks for sharing. Also I was wondering if you've tried the cached playblack in maya 2019, it would be nice to have your opinion and thoughts :)
@@SirWade FYI Maya doesn't make the geometry go to black around the edges. The object's material ambience is set to black by default. It gives you more control when lighting, but looks dark in the viewport. Look at the whites of Dana & Davids eyes, the ambience is set to white, so no matter how you light it, the eyeballs always look flat and too bright.

thank you so much for this!
This was very helpful 🙏🏾
really helpful tutorial!
But it gets even better : By using Object-Centric Lighting (Light Linking), you can also let lights affect only specific objects.
thx for the quick tutorial ;D
I love this but can you make an in dept tutorial on Maya interface
I think this might be helpful.... I'll give it a try
Thank you👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤

I have a question so why don’t you use 3D max instead of Maya?
I would personally just render in OCtane or another render engine alike

i worry about lighting from the very *sketch* stage: without light, we see nothing
Bro that game loks like the legend of zelda
I thought this video was going to be about animating, but it actually talks about lighting instead.
It's about presentation :)
