  • Rolling Stone caught up with Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham of the Southern California metal band the Deftones backstage at their show at Manhattan's Best Buy Theater this weekend. In this conversation, the guys opened up about how they pushed through dark times to make their new album, Diamond Eyes, and reflected on their long career in rock. "I notice that there's a new generation of fans," Moreno says. "I'll notice when we're playing stuff from our Diamond Eyes record that a lot of time the younger crowd will react to that and then we'll play the older stuff that always right away gets their attention, and it's like new to them."

im 23 and discovered Deftones prolly only 2 years ago when i was 21. I knew the popular songs like Change but thats it. Then I went deeper. I can play all their albums back to back over and over. They are the best band ive ever heard. Every song is magical. I wish I would have discovered them earlier

I heard their first single in late 1995. I had to import Adrenaline to Australia and it cost a lot. About $50 from memory which was my share of the weekly rent in inner city Sydney at the time. As soon as I heard 7 Words I knew I’d found something very special. Almost 30 years later, they still sound amazing. They still make me feel like they did that day in 1995.

I've only been listening to them for 6 Years. I remember hearing Change on the radio in 2010, and it instantly caught my attention. They've been my favourite band for the majority of that time, and I'm so excited to hear GORE.

I've picked few songs here and there from their albums two months after when Gore was released and I'm more than happy to listening to them! They're so inspiring and filling! Gore is definitely a heavy record of their work!

I only knew Change and Moana, until the end of the last year, that I decided to explore the band. Since then, I became addicted to their sound, and I'm amazed that they never cease to impress (Koi No Yokan was the first album of them that I could follow the release and it was marvelous). Hope they keep playing for a long time. Deftones for life!

the Labels arent gonna let the artists they sign produce work theyve deemed as "risky". And they monitor every element, track-by-track. To get White Pony to the point of release, these guys (Chino) mustve been mad-vocal the whole way thru. And, more importantly truly believed in the project.
and i loves me some white pony.

Deftones has been one of my absolute favorite bands since their debut album Adrenaline back in 95. I can't express how much they've inspired me over the years. Although I feel like Koi No Yokan was one of the greatest hallmarks of their career (second only to White Pony, in my eyes), Gore is a freaking masterpiece, no matter what any naysayers might believe.

100% agree...a buddy of mine turned me on to them when i was 18. I'm 27 now and they've been a part of my life ever since. You can definitely see what Chinos talking about if you've been to one of their shows. The younger crowd loves the last two albums, but then you see the older dudes/chicks in the crowd go nuts when we hear the first riff of Root.

Wow! i been listening to deftones since i was like thirteen in 1997. In my opinion, they really hit their stride on their self-titled album. But I think they're thing is to make a "safe" album, then follow it up with an experimental one.

@tsyrlb It's rare tho, the way the music continues to appeal to me even after i would have listened to it hundreds of times; there is still a connection that holds on strong. It's scary sometimes; makes me question things and change my outlook on life entirely. I'm sure it does the same for other people; for example i introduced a friend to deftones and she's not into rock, but she really connected deeply with the music and still listens to it.

Hopefully Koi can do the same, or better.

Deftones do care allot for Chi, they just need to do more. All the profits from the Sacto show went to Chi.
