I love your comment at the end about reading books. Too many book snobs that look down on an adult reading YA or MG. If I can get someone who never reads, to turn off the TV, put down their phone and pick up a book….any book…than I am happy. We should never discourage or make fun of people for what they read.👻
Yes agreed. I tend to incline to adult fantasy, but since discovering middle grades, I always pick them and they are such warm cozy hugs, and some surprise me, to the extent I have placed some of them higher than some "big" fantasies I have read. Agreed about Frankenstein, it's not as much as horror, as it is commentary on so many things, if I were to sit and list would be pretty long. I felt it is the earliest science fiction ever written and it keeps blowing my mind when it was published
Fun fact: all the way up until you started mentioning this book in your TBRs, I thought Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell was about a man and his cat. I fully believed Mr Norrell was a cat. For YEARS. I have no idea where I got that information from, but I was shocked to find out the truth 😂😂
you made me love middle grade books when before i was scared of even walking in the “children” section at book stores but now that’s my favourite place so thank you!!
I love Frankenstein and Dracula. They both start a little slow but once you are in they are fabulous. Agatha Christie is a favorite author. Murder on the Orient Express is my favorite. Enjoy. 👻
👻 So happy to hear that you loved Orient Express! I think that the plot twist of that story is something which only Christie could pull off! Other Christies I'd recommend are Then There Were None, Mousetrap, and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Also, I'd recommend Junji Ito's graphic novel adaptation of Frankenstien - he stays true to the original story, and really makes it come alive through his beautiful illustrations.
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson was my favorite book last month. If anyone has been intimidated to start reading Sanderson, I would recommend starting with the standalone - it's great!
I read Frankenstein in highschool and the way the teacher broke it down and went through all the literary elements, it was amazing. I throughly enjoyed it. Not what I expected, but amazing.
I am just so in love with your background 👻 The library of my dreams! I read 12 books this September. Thanks to finding booktube and your channel in August I got out of my very long reading slump ❤
One of my five-star reads this past month was A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, but another one that I read and loved was Ace of Spades, I would recommend getting to that one soon!
I read 0 books in September. I have several of the books you loved this month so I am looking forward to diving into them! I'm currently reading The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould. :)
Seems like a great reading month! I also truly appreciate your last comment about how all reading formats are valid ❤️ I’ve been loving graphic novels and children’s literature recently, but it’s a bit intimidating sometimes to see everyone’s wrap ups being having such large books. Thanks for that 💛 And last September there was an adorable comic book called Cat’s Cafe by Matt Tarpley that I adored! Definitely would recommend to anyone who wants a cute uplifting read ☺️👻
I just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell too. Stephen and Childermass were my favorite characters. I didn't think the ending was a cliffhanger so much as it showed the results of the changes wrought by the events in the book. Hubby and I are watching the mini-series now. And I think Mr. Norrell would get any ones nerves. LOL
My September fav was Temple Alley Summer (Japanese translated middle grade) by Kashiwaba Sachiko, the author whose work inspired Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away😻💕
Hi Lexi, I LOVE your videos! I always get so excited when a new one is uploaded 💃🏻. The best books that I read in September are Mexican Gothic and Nevermoor. You have really influenced me to read more Middle Grade books - and I’m loving them so far ❤️👻
I read Frankenstein last fall for a class. I liked it better than I expected, but it's definitely not spooky. It's more about morality and what makes someone irredeemable etc etc. It's a good book for a rainy day, but it wasn't really what I hoped for, so I see your point.
Currently reading Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield. It's taking me a while to get through because I've been busy with midterms, but I'm really enjoying it! Cozy, mystery vibes with a touch of fantasy, and very character-driven!
👻 I swear I spend way too much time getting book recs and not enough time reading but man if your voice was audiobooks I could listen non stop! Love your accent 😇
LOVE your channel!! Did you know The Strangers is the first in a series?! There's three books total so far with the third book coming out in February!!
👻👻the only thing I read in september was Way of Kings....... But it was a 5 star!! Right now I'm reading six crimson cranes and I did not expect for most of the book to take place in winter! I'm really enjoying that aspect. Lexi, I bought when you trap a tiger based on ur recommendation and I can't wait to read it!☺ I'm thinking sometime in november..👻👻
I’m currently reading Frankenstein as well! The language took me a moment to get used to but I’m liking it. However, I knew the book was completely different than what we know of as Frankenstein. The only thing I’m struggling with, is that for it to be a classic gothic, it’s really missing the gothic feel for me. I’m about 40% through and am still struggling to really consider it as a truly gothic tale. It technically has some of the themes, but they just don’t come off as that style. Can’t wait to hear more of your thoughts on it. I don’t know if you’ve read Dracula before but I love that one. It’s still a slow burn but has a lot more of an eerie/mysterious feeling to it in my opinion. I hope you do a vlog on the analysis and comparison of them!
I am reading Dracula now, and it sure is a slow burn. But I am loving it and the eerie feeling it has. My plan is to finish it in mid October and then start reading Frankenstein, and also read some lighter spooky books in between. Really curious to see how it will be to go from reading Dracula to Frankenstein! Would also love Alexandra to do a comparison :)
You totally made me join book of the month! I also grabbed the Ex Hex this month and cannot wait to read it. (They should definitely keep you as a spokesperson. It worked, lol).
Haha right?! She did the same for me months ago haha. And I still have it so that’s a good sign! I just love that you can skip if you want, I’ve definitely taken advantage of that. Plus, it’s only $15 a month after the first and that’s not a bad price whatsoever for a new adult hardcover!
@@ColleenDelaney Exactly!! I also especially love that the add ones are $10 cause like you said, that’s honestly the cheapest version out there. Currently listening on Libby to Dracula ( I never read this and am enjoying listening to it) I am reading The Girl in Cabin 13 and enjoying it also. Last month I read The Unhoneymooners which was so cute and I didn't think I would really be into it. I try to read 1 a week and listen to 1 a week but lately I have been in a slump and haven't done much. My October TBR is pretty full though. We will see how many I get to.
One of my BOTM picks for this month was Practical Magic from Alice Hoffman. I never saw the movie but wanted something Halloween-ish 😂 LOVED IT! I’m going to need to one you mentioned!
I only read one book in September and it was Manfield Park. Yesterday I finished Rebecca and really enjoyed it. :) I'll actually be starting Frankenstein tonight :)
👻Piranesi is a favorite of the year for me! 🥰I am excited to try Strange and Norell, but I hope the ending is satisfying enough. The Book of Magic is BRILLIANT and everyone should read it.
Finally read A Darker Shade of Magic last month and even though it’s not a favorite, I still really enjoyed it ✨
I have just finished the «All souls» trilogy, and I loved it. I was a bit nervous, because I like the TV series «A discovery of witches» so much. The books were even better😊.
What was the name of the critical text you ordered? I would be interested in checking it out.
Does Book of the Month have middle grade selections?
The last mrs Parrish by Liv constantine!
