- This video will focus on Pistol & Handgun Aiming & Sight Picture techniques. We will be covering two important sight pictures today. The first is a basic one eye open aimed shooting technique using the dominant eye only, with a hard focus on the front sight. The second will be something commonly referred to as “point shooting”. It's performed with both eyes open and a hard focus on the target.

I'm a retired swat commander. We taught and used point shooting exactly as you describe, as it allows you to see secondary threats.
One interesting thing, once you practice this technique long enough, the ghost image from your weak eye will somehow disappear. I'm not sure about the mechanics of that, but all of our officers reported the phenomenon.
My eye does this naturally no training. My doctor said its my brain ignoring my left eye because the other one is better. My left eye is s h e t
It probbably dissapears because your brain learns to ignore that "ghost image" and makes it just, dissapear as it's useless.it's what I think

I've been practicing keeping both eyes open for months. All of a sudden I think my brain just clicked and I got it. It was weird but just keep practicing. You'll get it.

As a beginner, I was struggling massively with shooting with both eyes open. The gun would kinda split into two and I didn't really know what to look at. The tip to focus on only one of the "two guns" helped me tremendously. I now understand how to confidently shoot with both eyes open. Thank you!

I was as well. Everywhere I went and everyone I talked to kept saying "focus on the first sight" and "keep both eyes open". I was just like ... Ok, now which rear sight goes with which target? I actually learned the method described in this video from a RUclips comment of all places. Some friendly fellow replied to my frustrated remarks on another video where they gave the same terrible, contradictory advice everyone else had.

It wouldn't make sense to look at the side of your handgun. You obviously need to look trough the sights.

I’ve been shooting with both eyes open while undergoing firearms training right now in corrections academy. I was told it is better suited to always be aware of secondary threats. The mistake I was making that you pointed out was that I was still focusing on the front sight which was causing multiple targets in my sight picture throwing my aiming off. Definitely going to work on this today
Heard that as well with all the agencies I have worked for. This video is excellent. It explains the both eyes technique very well. I always getting double vision focus on front sight. Knowing it’s the exact opposite of one eye, keeping eye on target should help me.

I “see” what you did.
As an archer I see a lot of newbies shoot with one eye closed and/or focusing on the sight pin. It's so important to focus on the target, because you need to see where you're shooting properly, and keeping both eyes open both clears up the sight picture, and allows you to look down the range if someone decides to walk onto the range. I wish everyone in shooting sports would focus on their target and keep both eyes open, because it's just much safer.

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a couple of months now. There’s a lot of difficulty and misinformation out there. I’d been trying to keep both eyes open and focus on the front sight, not the target, and wondering how anyone can do that and know what they’re hitting. This makes much more sense.
Same thing for me. When I started shooting I just naturally went with both eyes open and focused on the target. I kept hearing and reading about focusing on the front sight, but every time I tried it I could hardly tell where the target was.
Same here. Such a blurry, double visioned mess downrange when focusing on sights with both eyes open. I was beginning to wonder if my eyes just worked differently that others, because of all the videos and articles that promote that with no mention of how bad the target looks.
The focusing on the targets bit really made all the difference.

It can feel a bit weird since weight is innacurate if existent at all. Also, if your dpi isnt perfect ant your headset isnt put on exactly correct, it wont have the same effect since guns will be projected different

@@fork2309 In vr you dont feel any weight at all expect your vr headset.Also in vr shooters if you use a rifle without a vr gun stock it's extremely unstable and using sniper rifles is horrible,alteast for me.
I've learned to shoot with both eyes open by playing Pavlov on VR and it also helped in real life
I am left handed, but shoot right handed and shoot with my left eye open (which I have found to be my dominant eye). Keeping both eyes open is still a huge struggle for me as I struggled with the double image and no one could help me with understanding this double image before, so eventually I avoided keeping both eyes open, but this explanation just made everything so much better, I am going to practice keeping both eyes open from now on! Thanks!
How would it feel like to shoot right handed with the firearm offset to your left eye?

It doesn't really feel weird, as I grew with right handed parents, so their teachings were always right handed,so it is kind of normal for me to do a lot if things right handed.
Typically people will shoot with their dominant eye regardless of handed-ness, though I'm lucky enough to be left handed and left eye dominant. You may try shooting right handed or even practice bringing a handgun up under your dominant eye left handed. I've seen videos on room clearing where the instructors switch from eye to eye without switching which hand they're shooting with.
@@screentimer I shot for years with my right eye being right handed before learning I was left eye dominant. I found that they only way I could get comfortable using my dominant left eye was to shoot with both eyes open. It took a while to retrain myself to do this, first learning to ignore the right side picture and instinctively to go to the left eye. The other thing was to train my aiming to press out to position my gun to my left eye, this took a while as well. It’s not as dramatic as one might think, my hands and gun are only maybe an inch or so to the side of where they used to be, but it was important for that muscle memory to naturally go to this new position so I wasn’t ‘searching’ for the correct dominant eye image. Time and practice has given me more accuracy and now it’s normal.
I was hit in my left eye with scissors when I was 12 and now I can't see out of it so I always shoot with both eyes open lol. Thanks for showing me what it would look like if I could see out of both eyes.
Very sorry to hear about that terrible accident... glad you are keeping up on your shooting skills. I've been an instructor for nearly a decade and had quite a few folks with vision impairments. All were very capable shooters. IMO, bad technique screws people up way more than physical impairments do.
I had a boss who had had an eye accident back in the 70's. He lost the use of his left eye. He claimed he was a better shot because he did not have to close one eye when he was shooting a rifle.

This is encouraging because I lost 80% of my vision in my right eye after a botched retina surgery. I’m now learning to shoot and it’s good to hear that it still can be done if I practice enough.

Once you have determined what your dominant eye is it's not hard when you play baseball you don't close one eye when you're trying to catch the ball or hit it to you the same is true for shooting the real trick is bringing the sites to your dominant eye every time

This is absolutely great. You covered SAFETY first and good practice while learning about a specific firearm type. I have seen many people with strong dislike towards weapons because they simply did not take a brief moment to understand its beautiful mechanics and overall situational awareness. +1 point for discouraging cat violence haha.
I once figured out this technique on my own when I opened my left eye while aiming. My dominant eye is left, but I'm right handed. This technique is a lot more comfortable for me than the regular one eye technique.

This is great! Many videos simply reiterate "just focus on the front sight" but neglect to mention the "two target" problem that occurs with both eyes open and focusing on the front sight. Once I heard that it finally clicked for me!
This was a great video. I just bought the P365 SAS yesterday, and I've been a one-eye shooter for years. With the tritium sights on the SAS, I found the properly aligned sight picture took a bit of time to find. After watching this video and dry-firing with both eyes open, the sight picture was instantaneous. Looking forward to range day tomorrow. Thanks for a well-done lesson.

I learned both eyes open reading articles by Cooper and Ayoob as a teen and never looked back. Doesn't matter if it's a scope, dot or irons it's always both eyes open. :)

In the UK military we use the term, 'Equal height, equal light'. referring of course to alignment of front and rear sight, and the 'equal light' either side of the front sight post. It works for me.

When i was in boot camp there was something called "dime and washer" training.
It was a dry fire exercise where a rod was placed in the rifle and a dime or washer was placed in the rod.
The goal was dry fire and keep the dime on the rod.
i do the same thing with my mnp balance dime on the front sight it helped me immensely with trigger pull discipline !!!!

I've always shot with my dominant eye open and I never had much luck as a newer shooter with having both of my eyes open. I'm trying to train myself to learn this skill but needed a refresher on the basics of aiming while point shooting. Thanks!
I've always been confused about the whole one eye vs two eyes debate, I seem to remember hearing before that shooting with one eye is actually less accurate. Great video and thanks for clearing up misconceptions!
Both eyes open, hard focus on front sight is great for longer range shots where the front sight would completely cover the target.

true of pistols or rifles. rifles tend to have smaller more precise iron sights, but then again, they're intended for longer ranges so there's the same issue either way.

This video is clear, concise and to the point. Hits all impt. points without just talking too much. If you can do this, without the bullets or the bang you will be a good shooter.
Make sure your gun is ok for dry fire and practice. After 26 years with NYPD I still practice, without bullets. As you see I read what I can because good in not enough when actually shooting at someone. When you pull that trigger you better know what’s behind or around your target. I see how many shots are fired without hitting what you are shooting at.
I have so many imaginary holes in my tv you would not believe it. If I missed my target and hit a child, there is no ‘sorry’.
I’m very new to shooting handguns and for the longest time I thought you aimed the far (center) sight OVER the object you were aiming at. Not slightly below it so you could actually see it. It makes since because I’ve always wondered how the heck people could see what they were aiming at if it’s covered up by the sight
This depends 0n you to sight your gun in to hit that way by the height of your rear sight
I've been shooting both eyes open for most of my life. I first learned to do it when shooting trap and skeet. Having a target come from the left when shooting with only one eye, you end up behind the target a lot due to how late the target enters your field of vision. So I started learning to shoot with both eyes open so I could track the target earlier. After a while it became natural, then shooting handgun, it was an easy transition for me.
If you're practicing with a .22lr handgun be sure to use snap caps instead of dry firing as .22lr is rimfire and dry firing it can damage the firing pin unlike a centerfire. #4 drywall anchors make perfect snap caps and fit into the chamber and get extracted as if they were made for this very purpose, cheaper than buying actual snap caps too.

Okay, so I was only focusing on the front sight and would get a double picture with a fuzzy one on the left. If I closed my left eye it went away and I had perfect sight alignment. Then
I changed to only focusing on the target and the front sight would come in clear without the second fuzzy picture on the left and it would align perfectly. That's cool. Thanks!!
Really well explained technique! I’ve been struggling with fatigue due to squinting and forcing one eye closed to aim, leading to pulled shots. I am now much more confident and comfortable shooting and more accurate as well.
Definitions of 'Controlled' vs 'non-controlled' environments: Controlled- Stationary to slow moving targets. Non-Controlled - Rapid moving or targets that endanger ( by shooting back ) you. Examples - An elephant that's 100 yards distant drinking at a stream versus one that is charging you from 50 yards. As for scenarios involving homo sapiens, most are of the non-controlled variety.

Thanks! I shot my first gun a couple weeks ago. It was relatively easy and I was very accurate when I closed one eye. When keeping them both open, I started seeing blurry. I couldn’t focus on either the target or the front sight. Hurt my eyes and my head after a while.

This video is BEAUTIFUL!!! My wife needed help in using the sights of her SW Shield EZ pistol. I was looking for a RUclips video and this one popped-up FIRST THING!!! I watched it and said to myself, "THIS is the video she needs to see!" This video has REALLY helped a lady, new to pistols, understand how to aim the pistol! I have an issue with being cross eye dominant. Yet my left dominant eye developed astigmatism. It was so bad I had to train to swap my eye dominance to my right. I have effectively retrained myself to shoot with my right eye, but was baffled as to how to train with 2 eyes as i was sure my eyes would fight. If i do the triangle hand test... i get mixed results as to which eye is dominant. So when trying to shoot with both eyes open it was a struggle. Training says to focus on the front sight, but the seeing double with both eyes was considerably worse as I also have a lazy eye which crosses independently. This really messed with my ability to know which front sight was correct. For me as a right handed shooter, with both eyes open... the image on the right... " left weak eye image " would actually drift all around based on which eye was being "lazy" and crossing. I just gave up trying to shoot with both open.

I'm a former prison guard and armed security officer, if you're just learning how to use guns in general, I implore you to try it using an airsoft gun first. There are some really good models that mimic almost everything about the real thing except if you miss or something catastrophic happens, the worst that'll happen is you give your neighbor or whoever at the range a little thump instead of a hole and a trip to the hospital.. When my grandpa taught me how to shoot, I was taught using a pellet rifle and an airsoft pistol with a few cans and beer bottles for targets and after my aim was pretty good, then I was given my first 9mm and a .308 hunting rifle that I still have to this day. There is no shame in learning the very basics on how to shoot from a less than lethal gun.
I wish someone would have taught me "both eyes open" from the start ... It's hard to make changes after years and years of shooting.
I'll be using this to teach new shooters, they'll understand quicker with these visuals, over just with a verbal explanation. Thanks!

Thank you for this video, I have been shooting the both eyes open target focused point shooting as long as i've been shooting naturally (no one has ever "taught" me to shoot) was handed guns from family members as a kid and just grew up shooting as I do. Lately I have been shooting with others in outdoor and indoor ranges and everyone has been trying to force me to learn the right eye only front sight focus shooting, saying i'm an idiot for the target focus way i shoot, and I simply cant get it down (front sight focus style). This video is the first time I've seen the way I normally shoot being explained (target focused). I am by no means a "Great" shooter but I can keep an 8" or less target pattern at 35 yards, and at least a 3" pattern at 15 yards and in my teenage years use to win shotgun skeet shooting matches against the local ranch hands i grew up around, though I will continue to practice ...im glad to know i'm not and idiot (at least in shooting technique lol)
I like that method. I've heard people knock it because it screws up sight alignment, but I think that can be fixed without closing the other eye or focusing on the front sight.

Absolutely... try this technique at 3:57 for a while and keep both eyes open. Force yourself to use the eye on the same side as your strong hand. It is odd at first, but after a while, your brain will get used to it. Best of luck!

I am cross eye dominant and to master both eyes open I cheek weld my right cheek to my right shoulder(slightly) then my left eye lines up because I have hundreds of thousands of presentations. This is what I teach my students.....With both eyes open present your pistol and concentrate on your target(Threat)...because in a real deadly force confrontation THAT IS WHAT YOU WILL DO..believe me I KNOW!. While concentrating on the threat you will see two out of focus sight pictures....it does not matter which one you use. IF YOU HAVE A SLIGHTLY OUT OF FOCUS SIGHT PICTURE SUPERIMPOSED ON YOUR THREAT(TARGET) PRESS THE TRIGGER AND YOU WILL HIT YOUR THREAT(TARGET). IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH SIGHT PICTURE OF THE TWO THAT, YOU USE...IF IT IS SUPERIMPOSED ON YOUR TARGET YOU WILL HIT YOUR TARGET!! Go to the range and try this technique...it works!!

Thanks for the educational clip. I do face difficulties in weapon sighting. I didn't experience this problem in rifle sighting when I was in the army. However, in my current job I need to pass the annual firearm test. Due to my weakening eyesight due to ageing, I need to relearn weapon sighting techniques all over again. Thanks once again.
This is exactly the way I shoot and I do it inherently. There are teaching methods out there that force you to focus on the front focus. That does. Work for me
I never had any problem with both eyes open until I started dealing with corrective lenses. Anyway, past that, as an experienced shooter training from CQB distances, the breathing aspect of the fundamentals are not much of an issue - with a rifle shooting at distance, a very big consideration. Overall, great video.

I recently had laser eye surgery. The procedure is called Blended Lasik where basically my left eye is a reading eye and my right eye is my distance eye. It took months for my brain to adapt and I went from blurred double vision to having pretty good all round eyesight. I should still be right eye dominant like I was before, but this has it up a little for me. I feel I should retrain because the ghosting is different now...

I learned the thumbnails content when I was 10. Tried it at 28 , worked like magic. Now 37 and its time to get back on the OG hobby
One thing that may help people learning to aim/shoot with both eyes open:
Start with both eyes open. If you’re not focused, wink until you are focused and then open your non-dominant eye again. Repeat as necessary and eventually you will never need to close your non-dominant eye when aiming/shooting.
DISCLAIMER: This is just a tip and it might not work for everyone. I’m not a keyboard commando or spec-ops recon paraseal sfwicc operations operator. Just trying to help.
Very good advice for those who are training with both eyes open. I used the same method withhout anybody telling me. Now using both eyes is second nature
82 Luft Thank you. I was raised and taught to aim with one eye open. Once I entered the worlds of competition, self-defense and combat shooting, I quickly realized that this was not practical. Like you, I taught myself and don’t regret it.

Interesting. I was doing this before I started my military service and later law enforcement career. When an observant firearms instructor saw me shooting with both eyes open he asked why. I could only say that I kept both eyes open when shooting close, one eye open when shooting far or at something small. He said "Well, son... keep doing what your doing. It seems to work!"

I've got Strabismus, basically I really only see out of one eye and the other just sees peripheral. Had no issues with point shooting for my CCH class :)

I have always advocated for the two eye point shooting. Your dominant eye will take over. I find this technique also works well with photography. As an amateur wildlife photographer I find the two eye method allows me to acquire my target/subject almost instantly especially with fast moving subjects like a bird in flight.

This is a hugely important topic for shooting, and other things like proprioception affected by vision issues. As a kid in the 70s, I had a patch over one eye (the strong one) to strengthen the other eye. I ended up learning to switch the dominant eye, shoot lefty, shoot with one or both eyes, etc at a very young age with guns, bows and crossbows. It also came into sports like skateboarding and snowboarding, as I noticed a huge effect in left vs right stance and how vision affected both. The ideal in my opinion was to train both to really get to know both eyes.
I accidentally found the both eyes open technique in my own lol. Been shooting that way for forever.

Hi There! We have actually had a few students over the years with very poor vision in both eyes [legally blind]. We found that they had more success using just one eye open on the side of their dominant hand along with a bright and large-MOA red dot on the pistol. We had them train on black steel IPSC-type targets in front of a large piece of light-colored cardboard for maximum contrast. That way, they can see the dark silhouette of the target even if they can't see well. Both eyes open seemed to make things more blurry and confusing for blind shooters. But with one eye open and a bright red dot, they were scoring 100% hits by the end of the day. Hope this helps you!

Yeah. Never give a gun to a blind person for starters. All blind people can do is try to make sure the barrel is pointed the right direction and then try to shoot everything that moves randomly hoping they don't hit the neighbors pussy. 🐈
@George Robartes the problem is that blind people can't get permits and in terms of defending the home a person that can see is the best person to have the gun strategically speaking. Blind people shouldn't have guns.

i play a lot of vr games that include guns and i always thought the way i aimed guns was weird, i didn't know that it was the correct tactical way to do it. Nice video.
Must say that this is a great description of shooting with two eyes open. I am a right handed shooter but have a left eye dominance. This changes the sight picture completely and forces me to present slight cross body. It's not a problem as i have thousands of rounds down range in muscle memory, but its noteworthy if somebody is trying to figure this out. Figure out which eye is dominant and THAT along with your right/left hand shooting will determine where you should springboard for brain training.
