Hey everyone, thank you so much for watching! Please consider subscribing to the channel. Thank you so much for the support! Always love hearing your feedback :) What is your favorite John Carpenter film? What is your favorite Kurt Russell film?
I can't pick on Carpenter movie how about 3 / Halloween, The Thing and Escape From New York..... Same with Russell / The Thing, Escape From New York and Tombstone. Interesting 2 of the 3 are Carpenter/Russell.
Too many good Carpenter flicks. "The Thing", "Halloween", "Assault on Precinct 13", "Ghost of Mars", and "Escape from New York" are my favorites. A lot of Kurt Russell films too. "The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Death Proof", "The Hateful Eight", "Breakdown", "Escape from New York", and "Backdraft," are my favorites.
Thanks, Jesse! 🌃 Since you noticed the wonderful Adrienne Barbeau, check her out in John Carpenter's THE FOG (1980), George A. Romero's CREEPSHOW (1982) - all five segments were written by Stephen King... and she's in one episode of AMERICAN HORROR STORIES (2022) - Episode 3 of Season 1, entitled "Drive In". 🔸 I love her most from the controversial-for-its-time situational comedy MAUDE (1972 through 1978)... because I'm that ancient. 😆
Nice! I liked her "All In" attitude and she's someone I definitely want by my side if things go sideways! I'll be checking out pretty much all of those films :) You're nowhere near ancient yet lol! ;)
Hey, Jesse, "Cabbie" also stars in that one movie I recommended to you, "The Black Hole". His name is Ernest Borgnine. A great character actor. Okay, since it was actually cut from the movie, I'll tell you why everyone thought Pliskin was dead: He and someone else tried to rob the federal reserve, his partner was killed during a shootout with police. Pliskin was injured, and captured. However, upon hearing that his partner was killed, it was assumed that Pliskin was as well, since no real report came out about his capture. 35:15 - THAT, is a professional wrestler. He performed as "Ox Baker", and that pretty much was how he looked in the wrestling ring.
Thank you so much Iggy! It was kind of cool how they kept it a mystery, but at the same time I was just dying to know what the hell happened to make everyone think he was dead. Looks like "Ox Baker" was just a little bit before my time. I grew up watching guys like The Rock, Sone Cold Steve Austin, The Big Show. Ah good times, and you better believe I was screaming during those wrestling matches because I thought it was 100% real lol!
"We'd make one hell of a team, Snake!" "The name's Plissken!" Fun Fact: Every character that says "I heard you were dead" to Snake (Kurt Russell) dies. Casting Notes Fact: The opening narration, and the computer's voice in the first prison scene, were provided by an uncredited Jamie Lee Curtis. Location Location Fact: The night street scenes were filmed in East St. Louis, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. East St. Louis is filled with old, run-down buildings, and entire neighborhoods burned out during a massive fire in 1976. Practical Over CGI Fact: The wire-frame computer graphics on the display screens in the glider were not computer-generated. Computers capable of 3-D wire-frame imaging were too expensive at the time. Special effects designers built a model of the city, painted it black, attached bright white tape to the model buildings in an orderly grid, and moved a camera through the model city.
I swear, I think I'm gonna start telling people "The names [last name]" whenever someone calls my by my first name going forward lol! And of course I'm going to pause before saying it and look in their direction dramatically 😂 I can't believe that was Jaime Lee Curtis, and that I didn't catch it at first. It's so great that Carpenter seems to work with the same actor's on a regular basis
Oh hell yeah! So my next Carpenter film will probably be Big Trouble in Little China, but so many people are bring up The Fog so I'm gonna have to check that one out right after. :)
The commentary track that Carpenter & Russell did for this is one of the best. Very entertaining and informative about how things were done, made and all that. 20:23 That was Kurt's real life wife.
Ah, so glad you got to this - I was one of the people who recommended it, and now you know why: this is a quintessential and obvious cult classic, and Carpenter has delivered quite a few I always have to talk up Carpenter, and his genius here is the minimalism - particularly with the dialogue which is often repeated! "get them both back, Plissken!" and "Yeah, I've heard of you!" Carpenter is a visual guy too, so after putting Snake in a cool leather jacket, he abandons it! I'm not sure how many people would recommend it (it is an odd film and not as good as this one) but get to Escape from LA when you can - it features a harder Snake with great new gear (and MASSIVE guns) as well as a whole new theme. But even before that, watch Big Trouble in Little China: one of the BEST films ever made (you soon see why). A few things: - 'Maggie' was married to Carpenter in real life (at the time) - the 'girl in chock full o' nuts' was married to Russell in real life (at the time) - The voice over of 'you now have the option to self terminate' is Jamie Lee Curtis - The punk-hairstyle guy who is the Duke's No.2 has the character name Romero, and is played by Frank Doubleday (who is sadly no longer with us, and he came close to stealing the film if not for how amazing Russell was). A few of the characters have the names of famous directors (there is a Cronenberg). If you see Assault on Precinct 13, you'll see a younger Doubeleday, and he is even less likable. - if you search youtube for Escape from New York deleted... it won't be hard to find the clip of what happened to Snake right before this film. Escape from LA explores his past a bit too
Thanks so much for recommending it! :) You're 100% right, each time Snake interacted with a new person I knew the lines were coming and they still hit so good lol! I kind of love that though, it's as if he thought "Here, throw this one for a minute so you can look even more badass. Okay take it off and just go sleeveless now" haha! I wouldn't be surprised. And on the topic of jackets and Carpenter. So in Christine, Arnie starts wearing that red jacket and has it one for a good majority of the film. However, in the final showdown he's not wearing it. I wonder why that is..... And I just gotta check out Escape From LA to get some more Snake Plissken! I've been warned it's not as great, but perhaps I'll give it a try
@@jessebatres6895 it’s not as good, no. But it’s watchable :} Hollywood has a bit of a history of putting leading men in leather jackets to make them stand out (the original Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise is a great example). Having said that - think of Macready in The Thing - everyone else in the film wears parkers, sweaters, denim or puffer jackets. What does Kurt Russell wear?
In case no one mentioned it yet: the Duke is played by iconic singer Issac Hayes, the creator (among many accomplishments) of the Shaft movie theme song. Also, someone mentioned below Adrienne Barbeau's work. She's also John Carpenter's ex-wife. And Cabbie was played by Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine, who's been in a lot of classics. One in particular you should check out, if you haven't already, is The Poseidon Adventure (1972), one of the best disaster films out there. And Donald Pleasance also has a great body of work. His other iconic role other than Dr. Loomis, is his role as James Bond's archvillain Blofeld in You Only Live Twice (1976). You should check out Carpenter' second flick, Assault on Precinct 13 (1976); really good one.
Nice!! Thanks for the awesome insight! It makes since that the Duke was a singer. I had a feeling there was more to that voice, and I liked what he brought to this character. Ah John Carpenter, that lucky SOB lol! And yeah I gotta check out a lot more Donald Pleasance films. I've seen that image of him as a bond villain and it looks sick! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!

Yesssss!!! Isn’t it an awesome Bad Ass flick? So glad you’re checking out his catalogue. Definitely check out The Fog. Lots of his regular actors and a really cool atmospheric ghost flick with an amazing score. Some cool bits of trivia for you - some of the scenic and matte painting as well as the digital wireframe images of the city buildings when Snake was flying the glider were done by a 26 year old James Cameron…a few years before he directed The Terminator and became famous in his own right. Also, the voice over of the narrator and the voice over of the announcement system in the prison centre at the beginning was an uncredited Jamie Lee Curtis. 😊 So cool. For a 6 mil budget, Carpenter pulled off a pretty sick and slick looking film!! So glad you enjoyed it mate!
It's SO DAMN GOOD!!!! He's blowing my mind with the variety of themes he seems to knock out of the park! I'm putting The Fog high up n my list. So many are recommending it so I'm pumped to check that one out :) OH DUDE!!! Seriously! Man, James Cameron seemed to have his fingerprints on some pretty badass stuff, separate from his own films. I found out recently that he helped write Rambo 2, which blew my damn mind. I feel like sometimes someone's "name" just causes people to overpraise the stuff they do. But here I saw those images of the city when Snake was in the glider and just thought it looked so good and beautiful, and now I find out it was something that Cameron did. Yeah guys like that are just pretty damn good at what they do. Mind blown man!
A lot of this movie was shot in my hometown of St. Louis. I was a kid, but I remember when they shot it. I was on that bridge just a couple of months ago. Also, the Duke is Isaac Hayes, 70s soul singer and the voice of Chef from Southpark. And the big dude Snake fought in the ring is Ox Baker, a pro wrestler of that era. Great reaction, Jesse. You should grow your hair out and get an eyepatch.
That's badass!! It's kind of clicking now since I went to St. Louis once for a work event, and we want downtown. So cool! Oh shit, he was CHEF!! I knew that awesome voice of his sounded familiar, and yeah a voice like that is majestic and perfect for singing. I might have to consider rocking Snake's look for Halloween one year. I'd have to go with the sleeveless shirt as well 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!
Since you enjoyed the 'gauntlet of challenges in an urban wasteland' sub-genre, give The Warriors (1979) a shot. Preferably the original cut. Look for a familiar face from The Thing 😉 Then try Streets of Fire (with a young Diane Lane 😍) and Doomsday (with Rhona Mitra 😍)
I've heard great things about The Warriors! If I don't get to work it in during this month or December, than I'm definitely checking it out in January. Yeah there's something about that "wasteland" style that I enjoy and really get into. Sure polished and sleek is great as well, but I like the lived in and gritty look too
1. Snake is in trouble throughout the entire movie. 2. A British President? 3. Manhattan is very expensive real estate for a prison.🙄 4. The girl in the Chock Full O'Nuts is Season Hubley. She was Russell's squeeze at the time. Before Goldie. 5. Everyone who says, "I heard/thought you were dead" dies. 6. The eye patch is Russell's idea.😎 7. I loved, loved, loved Harry Dean Stanton😇 8. Favorite character: Romero. 9. This was filmed entirely at night in an area of St Louis before it was refurbished. 10. The only reason to watch "Escape from LA" is to say you have. Besides doing this for a living.
Haha! Yeah that's hilarious how someone with such an iconic voice "British accent" like Donald Pleasance would be the President. Like I said, those speeches would be so epic lol! I wonder if the eye patch started screwing with Russell's vision, I just feel like it would give me a headache if I had to wear it for hours on end. BUT it was a damn good choice and looks so badass!!!!
Haha! It's like a requirement they had to follow back in the day 😂 Jason Statham would've stood a chance back in the 80's Looking forward to Big Trouble in Little China! :)
Let me throw a curveball your way: "Wings of Desire" (Wim Wenders, 1987). Go into it cold, and let it work its magic. It's mainly considered a love story, but...honestly, I think it's more about how good it is to be alive.
@@jessebatres6895 There's another movie she was in, The Swamp Thing (1982) directed by Wes Craven. Fun movie for sure (horror sci-fi film) love the cover of this movie. Worth a watch.
If you're on a John Carpenter kick don't forget "They Live" with the late great pro wrestler, Rowdy Roddy Piper. "I came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all outta bubblegum...' LOL. If you ever saw the "cripple fight" scene from South Park, that was taken pretty much blow for blow from the Roddy Piper/Kieth David fight scene from They Live.
John Carpenter is amazing so is Kurt Russell / this combo made a great movie. Two of my favorite performances for Kurt is "Snake" Plissken and Wyatt Earp.
Dude I swear, at least once in my life I'm going to respond to someone with "The name's [last name]", when someone calls me Jesse. And stare right at them all dramatically lol! Just one damn time in my life for sure 😂
Awesome! I like what she did with this character. I thought she'd be one-dimensional at first but was cool to see the multiple layers she brought and I completely bought how she just wanted to not go on anymore without Brain.
Yes dude. Knew you'd love it mate. One of my favourites, I know you love Halloween too..listen back to the ladies voice doing the voice over at the beginning, a certain Jamie Lee Curtis. A few of the actors in here make an appearance in The Fog too, another Carpenter classic. Snake Plisken returns in a 90's Carpenter film ...Escape from LA which is basically the same film but in LA, not as good but still worth a watch.
Thanks for recommending it Gavin! It was such a pleasant surprise, and man John Carpenter is starting to make a fan boy out of me lol! The dude does so many things incredibly well! Are you kidding me with Jaime Lee Curtis!!! I can't believe I didn't recognize the voice! And she has a pretty distinct voice as well. So awesome!!! I think I'll be checking out The Fog soon as well as Big Trouble in Little China.
@jessebatres6895 both great films dude, I'm glad you're watching films that sound interesting to you, rather than films that gets lots of views. A great way to go about things in my opinion dude.
When you are ready for more John Carpenter horror, continue the thematic trilogy of The Thing with Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness. Then maybe Cigarette Burns, a lesser known Carpenter with similar themes. Carpenter himself also hosts the horror anthology Body Bags, and is pretty funny.
I'll have to add some of these to my list! I've had Tombstone on there and will be checking that one out soon. Some folks mentioned that Michael Biehn is in it and is great in his role! If you've seen some of my other reactions you'll see that I really like his characters and it blows my mind how that guy didn't become a major star

5. Everyone who says, "I heard/thought you were dead" dies.
6. The eye patch is Russell's idea.😎
7. I loved, loved, loved Harry Dean Stanton😇
It’s not a Jesse reaction without an acute observation of the hairline! 😂 Can’t wait for Big Trouble - it’s an absolute blast!
Haha! It's like a requirement they had to follow back in the day 😂 Jason Statham would've stood a chance back in the 80's
Looking forward to Big Trouble in Little China! :)
Let me throw a curveball your way: "Wings of Desire" (Wim Wenders, 1987). Go into it cold, and let it work its magic. It's mainly considered a love story, but...honestly, I think it's more about how good it is to be alive.
Adrienne Barbeau was something else for sure
If I walked by her, I'd have to do that "double take" and lift my jaw off the ground haha!
Maggie is Adrienne Barbeau. She was in "Swamp Thing" and "The Fog"
Awesome! I like what she did with this character. I thought she'd be one-dimensional at first but was cool to see the multiple layers she brought and I completely bought how she just wanted to not go on anymore without Brain.
@jessebatres6895 she was really popular in the late 70s and through the 80s. She's even done a photo shoot for an adult magazine!😉😉
Cabbie is Ernest Borgnine…famous actor from old Hollywood. Try The Poseidon Adventure.
Adrienne Barbeau was married to John Carpenter.
Lucky bastard! lol!
Nice!! Man I love the variety in Carpenter's films. I was ready for just horror, but there's so much more that he brings and does so well!
Kurt Russell…so many good ones…my favorites:
Tombstone
Breakdown
Captain Ron
Miracle
Deepwater Horizon
I'll have to add some of these to my list! I've had Tombstone on there and will be checking that one out soon. Some folks mentioned that Michael Biehn is in it and is great in his role! If you've seen some of my other reactions you'll see that I really like his characters and it blows my mind how that guy didn't become a major star
You can try to watch Escape from L.A the sequel, but it wasn't great. Snake is in it though
I think I just have to check it out to get a little more SNAKE PLISSKEN!! :)
watch Soldier with Kurt Russel
